TECH STANDARD 8: Information Literacy Skills: The competent teacher will develop information literacy skills to be able to access

, evaluate, and use information to improve teaching and learning.

1. Fully state the standard in bold text. Then write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of that standard—put the standard into your own words. I think this standard wants me to understand the importance of developing and using skills to access and evaluate information in order to improve my own teaching as well as the learning of my students. Teaching is unique in that once you receive a degree, your learning does not end. As a teacher, you commit to being a lifelong learner. It is especially important to be aware of new ways to access information and to be constantly improving skills to evaluate that information to use for teaching and learning.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard. The artifact I chose for this standard is an assignment from one of my Special Education classes: SPED 405. This assignment entailed focusing on a specific student I have worked with and then coming up with ways to help this student improve in some of his/her problem areas. The student I chose was struggling with certain aspects of math. I chose two strategies: graphic organizer and mnemonics based on information I had read about in our textbook. I used the information I read to choose two strategies that I thought would work best for this particular student, which is the evaluating of the information. I then provided online resources for each strategy that I accessed and evaluated as quality sources. I also

developed an activity using each strategy addressing state standards and gave a rationale for why I chose that activity. This entailed me accessing information online and in textbooks to develop the activities, and then evaluate the information I accessed to ensure I included only quality and appropriate activities.

3B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment This artifact was written as a class assignment, but saved for practical use in a future classroom of mine. In any grade, I could use this information for math lessons. I provided valuable resources and also activities that could be adapted for whatever grade level is desired. I could even use the strategies to accomplish goals in other subjects as well. This assignment truly showed me how important it is to be able to access and evaluate information literacy for the sake of my teaching as well as the learning of the my students and myself.

Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn

in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard. I believe that being familiar with easy and effective ways of accessing and evaluating information and actively incorporating it into the classroom will help me as a teacher further understand and cater to the diversity within my classroom. All students are different. They will all be at various stages of development and come into my classroom with different perspectives on life and learning as well as different backgrounds and ideas for their future. I want to be able to connect my teaching with all of my students, so that each and every one of them will benefit from their time spent in my classroom. I believe the ability to access

information will help me develop ways to differentiate my instruction and not only acknowledge the diversity in my classroom, but embrace it. Books, the internet, and other sources offer a great variety of resources I can use in my classroom, which this assignment has shown me. I am more aware of the information available to me, how to access it, as well as ways to evaluate it and am now better equipped to implement these skills into my classroom and teach my students to be able to do this as well.
