“The Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in
which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community and
in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity.”
- Preamble to the Liberal Democrat Constitution
The Liberal Democrats have been the majority group in North Norfolk since 2003. North
Norfolk is one of the very safest Districts in the country and, at a rating of 88%,
satisfaction with the area is high among the residents of our District. These are some of
the many things which we have done in the last four years.
• We have kept council tax among the lowest in the country. This year there will
be no rise at all.
• We have worked to build almost 250 affordable homes for local families.
• We are very effective at dealing with fly tipping. From 2009 until 2011 we held
the title of cleanest District in Britain.
• At 46% our household waste recycling rate is among the highest in England and
the great majority of our residents are satisfied with our waste collection service.
• For the sixth year in a row we have kept our Green Flag at Holt Country
Park, a woodland owned by the people of North Norfolk and free to all.
• We will work with our neighbouring councils to provide you with better and more
economical services whenever we can;
• We will keep up our contributions to local voluntary groups including the North
Norfolk Community Foundation, the Citizens Advice Bureaux and community
transport associations;
• We will do our best to see that North Norfolk remains one of the very safest
Districts in the country;
• We will continue the fight for social justice for the people of our coastal
communities and will explore the possibility of holding a referendum to give
North Norfolk people the chance to decide on whether to establish a community
solidarity fund to manage our coastline and help to protect coastal communities;
• We will do our best to raise recycling rates for household and trade waste beyond
55%.
North Norfolk District Council‘s share of your council tax bill is roughly 9 pence in
every pound. We are responsible for elections, for housing, for economic development,
for environmental health, for waste and recycling, for building control and for most
planning decisions. We administer housing and council tax benefits on behalf of the
people of North Norfolk and, finally, we collect business rates and the council tax on
behalf of central government and local bodies such as the Police and the County Council.
