TRUTH

Maharash

spoken by Nisargadatta Volume 2

My self and your self are one. I know it, but you don't. That is all the difference - and it cannot last !!! What you see is nothing but your self. Call it what you like, it does not change the fact. Through the film of destiny, your own light depicts pictures on the screen. You are the viewer, the light, the picture and the screen. Even the film of destiny (prarabdha) is self-selected and self-imposed. Everybody wants to be active, but where do his actions originate? There is no central point: each action begets another, meaninglessly and painfully, in endless succession. The alternation of work and pause is not there. First find the immutable centre where all movement takes birth. Just like a wheel turns round an axle, so must you be always in the centre and not whirling at the periphery. Do not rush into activity. Neither learning nor action can really help. Your mind is steeped in the habits of evaluation and acquisition, and will not admit that the incomparable and unobtainable are waiting timelessly within your own heart for recognition. All you have to do is to abandon all memories and expectations. Just keep yourself ready in utter nakedness and nothingness By itself nothing has existence. Everything needs its own absence. To be is to be distinguishable, to be here and not there, to be now and not then, to be thus and not otherwise. Like water is shaped by the container, so is everything determined by conditions (gunas). Realize that whatever you think yourself to be is just a stream of events; that while all happens, comes and goes, you alone are, the changeless among the changeful, the self-evident among the inferred. Separate the observed from the observer and abandon false identifications.

How can there be two selves in one body? The "I am" is one. There is no "higher I-am" and "lower I-am". All kinds of states of consciousness are presented to awareness and there is self-identification with them. The objects of observation are not what they appear to be, and the attitudes they are met with are not what they need to be. If you think that Buddha, Christ, or Krishnamurti speak to the person, you are mistaken. They know well that the vyakti, the outer self, is but a shadow of the vyakta, the inner self, and they address and admonish the vyakta only. They tell him to give attention to the outer self, to guide it and help it, to feel responsible for it; in short, to be fully aware of it. Awareness comes from the Supreme and pervades the inner self; the so-called outer self is only that part of one's being of which one is not aware. One may be conscious, for every being is conscious, but one is not aware. What is included in awareness becomes the inner and partakes of the inner. Pain is physical, suffering is mental. Beyond the mind there is no suffering. Pain is essential for the survival of the body, but none compels you to suffer. Suffering is due entirely to clinging or resisting; it is a sign of our unwillingness to move on, to flow with life. As a sane life is free of pain, so is a saintly life free from suffering. A saint does not want things to be different from what they are; he knows that, considering all factors, they are unavoidable. He is friendly with the inevitable and, therefore, does not suffer. Pain he may know, but it does not shatter him. If he can, he does the needful to restore the lost balance, or he lets things take their course. It is the absolute in you that takes you to the absolute beyond you absolute truth, love, selflessness are the decissive factors in selfrealization. With earnestness these can be reached. The world has only as much power over you as you give it. Rebel. Go beyond duality. My world is free from opposites, of mutually destructive discrepancies; harmony pervades; its peace is rocklike; this peace and silence are my body. All will come through, not a single soul (jiva) shall be lost. The world is but a show, glittering and empty. It is, and yet it is not. It is there as long as I want to see it and take part in it. When I cease caring, it dissolves. It has no cause and serves no purpose. It just happens when we are absent-minded. It appears exactly as it looks, but there is no depth in it, nor meaning. Only the onlooker is real, call

him Self or Atma. To the Self, the world is but a colourful show, which he enjoys as long as it lasts and forgets when it is over. Whatever happens on the stage makes him shudder in terror or roll with laughter, yet all the time he is aware that it is but a show. Without desire or fear, he enjoys it, as it happens. Where there is a universe, there will also be its counterpart, which is God. But I am beyond both. You see yourself in the world, while I see the world in myself. To you, you get born and die, while to me the world appears and disappears. Our world is real, but your view of it is not. There is no wall between us, except the one built by you. There is nothing wrong with the senses, it is your imagination that misleads you. It covers up the world as it is with what you imagine it to be - something existing independently of you and yet closely following your inherited or acquired patterns. Your loss is your gain. When the shadow is seen to be a shadow only, you stop following it. You turn round and discover the sun which was there all the time - behind your back! [One reaches the Supreme state] by renouncing all lesser desires. As long as you are pleased with the lesser, you cannot have the highest. Whatever pleases you keeps you back. Until you realize the unsatisfactoriness of everything, its transiency and limitation, and collect your energies in one great longing, ever the first step is not made. On the other hand, the integrity of the desire for the Supreme is by itself a call from the Supreme. Nothing, physical or mental, can give you freedom. You are free once you understand that your bondage is of your own making and cease forging the chains that bind you. Consciousness is always of movement, of change. There can be no such thing a changeless consciousness. Changelessness wipes out consciousness immediately. A man deprived of outer or inner sensations blanks out, or goes into the birthless and deathless state. Only when spirit and matter come together, consciousness is born. Whatever happens, happens to you, by you, through you; you are the creator, enjoyer and destroyer of all you perceive. All you have to do is to understand that you love the self and the self loves you, and that the sense "I am" is the link between you both, a token of identity in spite of apparent diversity. Look at the "I am" as a sign of love between the inner and the outer, the real and the appearance. Just like in a dream all is different, except the sense of "I",

These are all metaphors of course. and remain firm in your understanding. Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God. All experience is illusory. You need not hanker. I do nothing. the reality is beyond description. easy to dispel by questioning its reality. You can know it only by being it. though it may lead to a new dimension of experiences. the womb of all existence. so does the sense of "I am" enables you to say "I am my real Self again. there is only a mental condition. Yet the new experiences. Say "there is consciousness". there is no body. in which everything appears and disappears." In reality you were never born and never shall die. Keep quiet. Just remember what you are. It is the discovery of the timeless . Our minds are just waves on the ocean of consciousness. But this is true only from the relative point of view. there can be no deceit in the search for truth. a dream-like state. limited and temporal. Definitely realization is not a new experience. for ultimately the return to balance and harmony is inevitable. he counts his risks and chances. or have. and it does not matter much what happens. are not more real than the old. undisturbed. Wait in silence of the heart and mind. As waves they come and go. and the wisdom and the power will come on their own. Expect nothing from experience. The heart of things is at peace. while the gnani remains aloof. nor a world to contain it. I appear to depend on everything. however interesting. but willingness is rare.which enables you to say "I dreamt". Don't say "everybody is conscious". But now you imagine that you are. Just puzzling over my words and trying to grasp their full meaning is a sadhana quite efficient for breaking down the wall. nor is anything done to me. As ocean they are infinite and eternal. To find reality you must be real in the smallest daily action. It is very easy to be quiet. sure that all will happen as it must. Realization by itself is not an experience. I am what I am and nothing can affect me. Within the limits of illusion the answer is: desire born from memory attracts you to a body and makes you think as one with it. the essence and the surface of all there is. but in fact all depends on me. Understand that you are both. Know yourselves as the ocean of being. The ordinary man is personally concerned. In fact. a body and you ask what has brought about this state.

As all waves are in the ocean. but there is no actor. yet it is not an experience. not the content of it. Hence awareness itself is all. realization comes imperceptibly. know yourself. including the idea of being a doer. You cannot control what you do not know. Step back from action to consciousness. and vapour dissolves in air and disappears. you must go beyond the mind. The witness is that which says "I know". The window is the absence of the wall. The stars affect us deeply and we affect the stars. but they do not notice it. It is immaterial what is the mind that you leave behind. There are numberless persons small and big and very big. They have changed. because there is nobody who does. It is awareness. imagine themselves as acting. Self-realization definitely comes first. On the other hand. so are all things physical and mental in awareness. In practice it is very simple.important. Just like ice turns to water. Be aware.factor in every experience. Just like in all the colours light is the colourless factor. The person says "I do". A weak mind cannot control its own projections. then into pure being (paramakash). and it gives air and light because it is empty. What is going on is a projection of your mind. To be what you are. all happens by itself. The mind cannot go beyond itself by itself. it is their . All change affects the mind only. To control yourself. provided you leave it behind for good. it is merely limited. of your mind and its projections. and water to vapour. who. of all imagination and effort. This again is not possible without self-realization. to say "I know" is not untrue. but somehow they need convincing. Now. but it does not change the fact that the world of action (mahadakash) is one single whole in which all depends on. therefore. leave action to the body and the mind. through identification. Such nonspectacular cases are often the most reliable. which is beyond all existence and non-existence. Be empty of al mental content. into your own being. The explosive power comes from the real. so does the body dissolve into pure awareness (chidakash). which makes experience possible. It must explode. knowledge gives power. and the very absence of obstacles will cause reality to rush in. But you are well advised to have your mind ready for it. With some. But to say "I do" is altogether false. and affects all. The universe is full of action. so in every experience awareness is present.

God is the universal light and love. In peace and silence. separate from the stream of life. having a will of its own. in the silence of desire and thought the truth is found. I see the witness. As long as you take yourself to be a person. Hence desires and fear and overwhelming activity in order to escape. Go beyond your concepts and ideas. pursuing its own aims. and the pure Being fundamental. the universal witness: I am beyond the universal even.domain. the skin of the "I" dissolves and the inner and the outer become one. fearless disciples very few. The impersonal is real. "I am this" is the person. When I look through the mind. till even witnessing dissolves in the Supreme. the personal appears and disappears. pursuing its own aims. When I look beyond the mind. All are mere words. Remain as pure witness. and whatever you do will be short-lived and of little value. a body and a mind. mere straw to feed the flames of vanity. Beyond the witness there is the infinite intensity of emptiness and silence. mere straw to feed the flames of vanity. of what use are they to you? You are entangled in the web of verbal definitions and formulations. a body and a mind. having a will of its own. you are living merely on the surface. and whatever you do will be short-lived and of little value. "I am" is the impersonal Being. pursuing its own aims. separate from the stream of life. mere straw to feed the flames of vanity. I see numberless people. having a will of its own. separate from the stream of life. You do not know what you are and therefore you imagine yourself to be what you are not. you are living merely on the surface. As long as you take yourself to be a person. and whatever you do will be short-lived and of little value. . a body and a mind. you are living merely on the surface. Teachers there may be many. The person is relative. I cannot say that I am in God or I am God. To identify oneself with the particular is all the sin there is. As long as you take yourself to be a person.

Was there ever a world without troubles? Your being as a person depends on violence to others. Your very body is a battlefield. all is in me and by me. The very idea of "else" is a disaster and a calamity. I appear to depend on everything. Look at the "I am" as a sign of love between the inner and the outer. use your power of alert aloofness.Truly. unapproachable. you look at it from the outside. Once you realize that there is nothing in this world which you can call your own. you will be afraid no longer. I do nothing. so does the sense of "I am" enables you to say "I am my real Self again. but in fact all depends on me. as you look at a play on the stage. invulnerable. admiring and enjoying. your only problem is the eager selfidentification with whatever you perceive. remember that you are not what you perceive. There is nothing else. and that the sense "I am" is the link between you both. After all. except the sense of "I". I am what I am and nothing can affect me. All you have to do is to understand that you love the self and the self loves you. otherwise all-pervading and all. See yourself in all that lives and your behaviour will express your vision. for you are not the mind. your personality is due to your self-identification with the body." Just see the person you imagine yourself to be as a part of the world you perceive within your mind. that you live in an imaginary world of your own creation is the dawn of wisdom. In peace and silence you grow. naturally you will be anxious to survive and increase. nor is anything done to me. The knower of reality is not compelled.containing. shortlived and vulnerable. unassailable. actually existing in time and space. a token of identity in spite of apparent diversity. in contact with them only at the point of here and now. Your being a person is due to the illusion of space and time. But when you know yourself as beyond space and time. a thing among things. full of the dead and dying. Circumstances and conditions rule the ignorant. and look at the mind from the outside. There is little of non- . To know that you are a prisoner of your mind. Give up this habit. As long as you imagine yourself to be something tangible and solid. but really unmoved. The only law he obeys is that of love. the real and the appearance. which enables you to say "I dreamt". or a picture on the screen. Existence implies violence. Silence is the main factor. Just like in a dream all is different. you imagine yourself to be at a certain point occupying a certain volume.

undifferenciated. Mahadakash is nature. All experience is in the mind. perception and cognition. you must go beyond the mind. But you can look at the dream as a dream. beyond God. but what is true. You cannot help it. and beyond both. my life flows. When you happen to walk in a . I express it by saying that I am both. Since at any point of time and space I can be both the subject and the object of experience. Just turn away. You know the real by being the real. love. and they are good. by shifting the focus of attention. It has nothing to do with effort. Let the dream unroll itself to its very end. Wisdom says "I am nothing". destiny. you can only learn what you are not. I call this capacity of entering other focal points of consciousness. Awareness is the point at which the mind reaches out beyond itself into reality. Consciousness and life . and neither. yet beyond both. and experience the kind of consciousness it has. the origin and the end of all manifestation. in self-awareness you learn about yourself. all comes to an end.violence in nature. There is no such thing as the experience of the real. the prime cause in every chain of causation. I become the inner witness of the thing. the ocean of existence. you may give it any name you like. the compulsion to sin again. Of course. I become the very thing I look at. ceases.being. Chidakash is the expanse of awareness. When ignorance. the root of time and space. the mental space of time. refuse it the stamp of reality. the infinite potentiality. With ignorance coming to an end. Paramakash is the timeless and spaceless reality. but you are beyond both. The real is beyond experience. perceiving the perceiver. the substance and the essence. but can be experienced as ever witnessing the witness. beyond being and not. With self-awareness] you grow more intelligent. both matter and consciousness. It cannot be perceived. dissolves.both you may call God. mindless. Between the two. the physical space with all that can be contacted through the senses. In awareness you learn. Do you realize that. rather than at the thoughts. the source and origin. look between the thoughts. you must be violent? I find that somehow. To know what you are. In awareness you seek not what pleases. as long as you have a self to defend. the mother of sin. Love says "I am everything". Things are then seen as they are.

The observed. The legitimate function of the mind is to tell you what is not. you must go beyond the mind. The self alone is. hear or think of. Having seen that you are a bundle of memories held together by attachment. There is in you the core of being which is beyond analysis. about yourself you can only say: "I am. the sense of frustration . the Supreme Reality. but not the observer. Remember to remember that the perceived cannot be the perceiver. step out and look from the outside. There is nothing to be done. but you are not the field and its contents. You are your self . You are what you are. The self is known as being. Too much analysis leads you nowhere. But when you do not resist. you are he to whom it happens. You yourself are God. You may perceive for the first time something which is not memory. You know you are the ultimate observer by direct insight. I like it". you meet no resistance. But if you want possitive knowledge. you invite a fight. the desire. Neither learning nor action can really help. There are no conditions to fulfil.crowd.the motive. you just find your way between. beyond the mind. You cease to be Mr-soand-so. Just look and remember.you are not what happens. You realize that nothing was ever wrong with the world. the not-self is known as transient. You are at last at peace. It is your idea that you have to do things that entangle you in the results of your efforts . busy about his own affairs. When you fight. you are out of it. Never again will you be caught in the meshes of desire born of ignorance. the failure to achieve. Is knowing separate from being? Whatever you can know with your mind is of the mind. not you. nothing to be given up. Simply look at whatever happens and know that you are beyond it. When you refuse to play the game. You can know it in action only. Whatever you see. remember .you cannot be anything but what you are. observation and observer are mental constructs. but you know what you are not. nor yours. whatever you perceive is not you. Do not rush into activity. you do not fight every man you meet.all this holds you back. not even the knower of the field. But in reality all is in the mind. you alone were wrong and now it is all over. not by a logical process based on observation. You can observe the observation. . I am aware. It is there in the field of consciousness.

abandon all self-identification. Turn your mind inside out. The pure mind sees things as they are . He knows that if the disciples do not learn from his words. Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God. Assertions are usually wrong. In reality. Abandon any desire. inexpressible. As pure witness. Victory is always his.The Guru is basically without desire. material or spiritual. stop thinking of achievement of any kind. the disciple is not different from the Guru. To question and deny is necessary. and remain firm in your understanding. gross or subtle. in the end. including his disciples with their petty plans. or. you need absolutely nothing. It is the essence of revolt and without revolt there can be no freedom. Inwardly he remains quiet and silent. and denials right. the essence and the surface of all there is. this or that. Just remember what you are. You were never born nor will you ever die. Abandon all self-concern.without having real being. Abandon the wrong ideas. which comes to the same. for they are wrong and obstruct your vision of yourself. worry not about your welfare. He sees what happens. so-and-so. The entire universe is his own. Each bubble is a body and all these bodies are mine. but feels no urge to interfere. Assertion is bondage. There is no such thing as mind. Understand that you are both. There are ideas and some of them are wrong. These bubbles are appearing. Your mistake lies in your belief that you were born. the entire universe affects him in equal measure. First of all. stop thinking of yourself as such-and-such.bubbles in consciousness. He is the same dimensionless centre of perception and love in action. Only by denying can one live. . Nothing in particular affects him. He makes no choices. changeless reality. he watches what is going on and remains unaffected. they will learn from their own mistakes. takes no decisions. He has no sense of being a separate person. but solid like a rock. you remain its slave. You are complete here and now. This is the heart of the matter: As long as you believe that only the outer world is real. disappearing and reappearing . Overlook the movable and you will find yourself to be the ever-present.

you are not conscious of. until you realize the two as one. To know it as it is. Consciousness is pure in the beginning and pure in the end. the essence and the surface of all there is.It is only your mind that prevents self-knowledge. or three. in between it gets contaminated by imagination which is at the root of creation. Any two of them presuppose the third which unites the two. all will come to you most naturally and effortlessly. then the Supreme State will come to you uninvited and unexpected. there can be no witness without the universe. The person cannot be said to exist on its own rights. nor the karma-bound individuality (vyakta). Deepen and broaden your awareness of yourself and all the blessings will flow. and remain firm in your understanding.image. and two become one. On investigation. It is the taking yourself to be what you are not that binds you. right and wrong: these are relative . All you need doing is doing nothing. seek nothing. when you want nothing. It is what remains when all self-identification is given up as false . You need not seek anything. At all times consciousness remains the same. nor of God. There can be no universe without the witness. What is really your own. In sadhana. The self (vyakta) is the victim of this imagination. three become two. Take the simile of face mirror . Pain and pleasure. or two. But identity is neither the transient personality (vyakti). expect nothing. it is the self that believes there is a person and is conscious of being it Just remember what you are. you see the three as two.pure consciousness. good and bad. the sense of being all there is. Understand that you are both. The Self is near and the way to it is easy. is realization and timeless peace. The personality (vyakti) is but a product of imagination. Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God. The state of identity is inherent in reality and never fades. They [matter and spirit] are one. When you demand nothing of the world. or could be.

If you persevere. You just keep on trying until you succeed. but in a different state of being altogether. without any self. just trying. This steady resistance against the unnecessary is the secret of success. The all-important word is "try". it cannot be explained. Like a bird on its wings. until your mind becomes the question itself and cannot think of anything else. only to be. But in your dream itself I am not interested. But it can surely be done. or happy. because there is no person. Try to be. On waking up you find you are love itself. the ideas of "me" and "mine" must go. . invariably binds. I leave no footprints. My intention to wake you up is the link [between our respective dreams]. embracing all. and in fact I am doing it all the time. It is pure awareness of being. you must really have had surfeit of being the person you are.identification with anything in particular or in general. Don't ask how. Stop imagining. When you see your dream as dream. Nothing was divided and there is nothing to unite. They will go if you let them. Personal love. See the contradictions. neither the "me" nor the "mine". the falsehood and the sorrow of the human state. not even the idea of nothing. however intense and genuine. love in freedom is love of all. without being this or that. the need to go beyond. Allow enough time daily for sitting quietly and trying. only a mental picture given a false reality by conviction. There is only light. Give all your attention to the question: "What is it that makes me conscious?". in which you are neither the body nor the mind. My heart wants you awake. there can be no failure. now see the urgent need of being free of this unnecessary self-identification with a bundle of memories and habits. you wake up. They are limited and temporary. earnestness. all you need is to realize that you are dreaming. Enough for me to know that you must wake up. Even to talk of re-uniting the person with the self is not right. to go beyond the personality with its addictions and obsessions. stop believing. Then your normal natural state reappears. the incongruities. What matters supremely is sincerity. or beautiful. or make it noble. What is added to memory cannot be erased easily. You need not bring your dream to a definite conclusion. For reality to be. In dream you love some and not others.terms and must not be taken absolutely. In that pure light of consciousness there is nothing. I see you suffer in your dream and I know that you must wake up to end your woes.

the reality is beyond description. It is because the "I am" is false that it wants to continue. But there is happiness. you will not abandon it.Don't say "everybody is conscious". It is disinterestedness that liberates. Freedom from one means freedom from the both.knowing itself indestructible. Truly. As long as you are interested in your present way of living. Being remains. Know yourselves as the ocean of being. With self-awareness] you grow more intelligent. the womb of all existence. but not self. Our minds are just waves on the ocean of consciousness. Of course. we do all sorts of things . The very idea of "else" is a disaster and a calamity. To know what you are. in self-awareness you learn about yourself. These are all metaphors of course. It is only when you realize fully the immense sorrow of your life and revolt against it that a way out can be found. Become aware of the unconscious. Reality need not continue . As ocean they are infinite and eternal. Discovery cannot come as long as you cling to the familiar. You need not stop thinking. it is indifferent of forms and expressions. There is nothing else. If you do not care for pleasure. The conscious ones are very few. and the only radical solution is to dissolve the separative sense of "I am such and such person" once and for good. As waves they come and go. Desire and fear are the obscuring and distorting factors. all is in me and by me. You are unaware of the fact because to you only the conscious ones count. When mind is free of them the unconscious becomes accessible. .all in vain. that is all. in which everything appears and disappears. you will not be afraid of pain. which is neither. There is no such thing as peace of mind. Say "there is consciousness". for the "I am" is being rebuilt from moment to moment. Most of your experiences are unconscious.being. Mind means disturbance. Pain and pleasure go always together. It is unceasing work. Awareness is the point at which the mind reaches out beyond itself into reality. You can know it only by being it. which is completely beyond. you must go beyond the mind. Just cease being interested. In awareness you seek not what pleases. you can only learn what you are not. but what is true. Don't hold on. To strengthen and stabilize the "I am". In awareness you learn.

You just keep on trying until you succeed. Try to be. All experience is illusory. I live in the sky. limited and temporal. Allow enough time daily for sitting quietly and trying. there can be no failure. Of what use is experience to me? In peace and silence.restlessness itself is mind. in a way. The all-important word is "try". which seeks not to improve on itself. but without the experiencer they are as nothing. just trying. Definitely realization is not a new experience. Expect nothing from experience. Yet the new experiences. Just like in all the colours light is the colourless factor. which makes experience possible. they have no price. This steady resistance against the unnecessary is the secret of success. not in the clouds. so in every experience awareness is present. which are so many words held together. only to be. What matters supremely is sincerity. There can be no experience of the Absolute as it is beyond all experience. On the other hand. are not more real than the old. It is awareness. The Absolute contains everything experienceable. . yet it is not an experience. and then realize that immense ocean of pure awareness. Don't ask how. What is religion? A cloud in the sky. First we must know ourselves as witnesses only. That which makes it actual is the Self. now see the urgent need of being free of this unnecessary self-identification with a bundle of memories and habits. but if there is nobody to buy them. the skin of the "I" dissolves and the inner and the outer become one. though it may lead to a new dimension of experiences. Realization by itself is not an experience. That which makes the experience possible is the Absolute. If you persevere. which is both mind and matter and beyond both. earnestness. An event becomes an experience only when I am emotionally interested. dimensionless and timeless centres of observation. validates the multiplicity of experiences. you must really have had surfeit of being the person you are. the Self is the experiencing factor in every experience and thus. to go beyond the personality with its addictions and obsessions. however interesting. it cannot be explained. The world may be full of things of great value. Remove the verbiage and what remains? Truth remains. I am in a state which is complete. It is the discovery of the timeless factor in every experience.

are his tools of work. What time has brought about. Centuries roll on. nor even your consciousness is yourself. Like a bird on its wings. not to the source of the "I am". Suffering and death. All that happens. Neither your body nor your mind. happens in and to the mind. but the human problem does not change . and will be the same ten thousand years hence. The world of illusion is left behind. or goes into the birthless and deathless state. It was the same ten thousand years ago. you will not abandon it. You rotate into a new dimension. Consciousness is always of movement. to the point of destroying the obtuse or perverted personality. Changelessness wipes out consciousness immediately. It happens suddenly and is irrevocably. As long as you are interested in your present way of living. You separate the painter from the picture and look for him. I leave no footprints. There is nothing gradual about it. to realize independence. time will take away. A man deprived of outer or inner sensations blanks out. One step at a time is easy. All perceivables are stains. Just like on sunrise you see things as they are. This is the end of yoga. It is only when you realize fully the immense sorrow of your life and revolt against it that a way out can be found.the problem of suffering and the ending of suffering. He can be quite violent at times. You can do nothing. so on self-realization you see everything as it is. Energy flows from earnestness. . the idea of a sole cause is an illusion. of change. and in fact I am doing it all the time. consciousness is born. There are no steps to self-realization. Only when spirit and matter come together. seen from which the previous ones are mere abstractions. Don't separate and don't put false questions. The inner guru is not committed to non-violence. The entire universe is a stain. All that happens is the cause of all that happens. Discovery cannot come as long as you cling to the familiar. It is only in duality that non-violence becomes the unifying law. But it can surely be done. There can be no such thing a changeless consciousness. as life and happiness. What is added to memory cannot be erased easily.Try. The painter is in the picture. Causes are numberless.

Unless you make tremendous efforts. It cannot be done. A saint does not want things to be different from what they are. but if there is nobody to buy them. you discover your self as the watcher. Pain is essential for the survival of the body. it is a sign of our unwillingness to move on. but it does not shatter him. he does the needful to restore the lost balance. The sum total of these defines the person. Nothing.I cannot say that I am in God or I am God. Keep in mind your goal of freedom. physical or mental. or. God is the universal light and love. of unfulfilled desires. but perennially one's own.

you will find that you are also beyond the object. only you do not know it. You are unaware of the fact because to you only the conscious ones count. If you trust me. then go within. Desire and fear are the obscuring and distorting factors. you will find yourself beyond the subject. and the understanding acts. it is faith in oneself. that both the subject and the object exist in you. or focus your mind on "I am". If you do not believe me. and you look at everything as from a distance. When you have found yourself. then go within. Most of your experiences are unconscious. Realize this and live accordingly. but the timeless reality of pure being is not in movement.birthplace of perceiving. you know that you had never lost that independent being. believe when I tell you that you are the pure awareness that illumines consciousness and its infinite content. which is pure and simple being. You are in no way different from me. To act from desire and fear is bondage. The succession of transient moments creates the illusion of time. If you trust me. The very idea of "else" is a disaster and a calamity. If you do not believe me. but you are neither. You need nothing more. You understand that you are the witness only. There is nothing else. . The conscious ones are very few. The witness attitude is also faith. Become aware of the unconscious. nor will be estranged from reality. There is no effort in witnessing. all is in me and by me. Realize this and live accordingly. It makes perception possible. once having turned within. Once you have found it in yourself. When mind is free of them the unconscious becomes accessible. that you are the fullness of perfection here and now and that nothing can deprive you of your heritage. nor are. the answer comes at once. to act from love is freedom. of what you are. You believe that you are not what you experience. believe when I tell you that you are the pure awareness that illumines consciousness and its infinite content. Truly. I can see with the utmost clarity that you have never been. enquiring "What am I ?". for all movement requires a motionless background. just remember that you are the witness only. If in the state of witnessing you ask yourself 'Who am I?'. It is itself the background. though it is wordless and silent. Cease to be the object and become the subject of all that happens.

However great and complete is your world. a dream-like state. it becomes an abode of joy and beauty. In fact. Love all. easy to dispel by questioning its reality. I am talking of immovability. which is pure and simple being. you will find the urge and the energy to go beyond. or none of it. Why go anywhere? Just realize that you are dreaming a dream you call the world. or have. To realize the immovable means to become immovable. The continuous cannot be experienced. In reality you were never born and never shall die. but one can know what it is not. It may or may not imply intense outward activity. there is no body. There is no need of a way out [of the dream]! Don't you see that a way out is also a part of the dream? All you have to do is see the dream as dream. If you do not want to suffer. You can be happy in the world only when you are free of it.enquiring "What am I?". The very idea of going beyond the dream is illusory. you have done all that needs be done. Pleasure puts you to sleep and pain wakes you up. change following change. The world does not yield to changing. Your problem is that you like one part of your dream and not another. without knowing. It is definitely not the entire content of consciousness which is always on the move. Discontinuity is the law when you deal with the concrete. but the mind remains deep and quiet. there is only a mental condition. nor a world to contain it. when one thing or state comes to an end and another begins. Once you have grasped the truth that the world is full of suffering. not of immobility. that which has no borderline cannot be experienced in the common meaning of the word. You cannot know yourself through . But this is true only from the relative point of view. and stop complaining. Consciousness implies alterations. You become immovable in righteousness. and stop looking for ways out. that to be born is a calamity. or focus your mind on "I am". You become a power which gets all things right. Within the limits of illusion the answer is: desire born from memory attracts you to a body and makes you think as one with it. for it has no borders. See it as it is and divest yourself of all desire and fear. When you have seen the dream as a dream. a body and you ask what has brought about this state. One can only be it. it is self-contradictory and transitory and altogether illusory. But now you imagine that you are. When the world does not hold and bind you. don't go to sleep. The problem is not the dream. By its very nature it is painful and transient.

broaden and deepen the field of awareness. you need not try to be. The mind must come to know the true self and respect it and cease covering it up. A ray of awareness illumines a part of our mind and that part becomes our dream or waking consciousness. The waking state differs from deep sleep in the presence of the witness. while awareness appears as the witness. You must face the opposite. Don't fight with what you take to be obstacles on your way. The state of witnessing is full of power.good or bad. Just realize that nothing observable. there is nothing passive about it. Sadhana connsists in the witness turning back first on his conscious. Who is to see what? You can only be the real. enquire. Once you know yourself as pure being. watch them. Self-awareness is Yoga. The Supreme is the easiest to reach. which does not change. In reality nothing happens. There is little difference between the conscious and the unconscious they are essentially the same. but you are not aware of yourself as being conscious. observe. You are aware anyhow. Be aware deliberately and consciously. The problem is not mental. then upon himself in his own awareness. The mind must learn that beyond the moving mind there is the background of awareness. First realize your own being. Just be interested in them. The witness usually knows only consciousness.bliss alone. anyhow. There is no need of true ideas. apart from the known. for it is your very being. Take no notice of what is not yourself. that is all. Let anything happen . There is no such state as seeing the real. Develop the witness attitude and you will find in your own experience that detachment brings control. or binds you. It is enough to stop thinking and desiring anything but the Supreme. to find enlightenment. . What you need is to be aware of being aware. what you are not. Abandon false ideas. for bliss is your very nature. Then meet yourself as the knower. or experienceable is you. You are always conscious of the mind. But don't let yourself be submerged by what happens. There aren't any. there is no past nor future. This is easy because the sense "I am" is always with you. the ecstasy of freedom is your own. like the moon which obscures the sun during solar eclipse. which you are. all appears and nothing is.

A man deprived of outer or inner sensations blanks out. You must work relentlessly for your salvation from sin and sorrow. but you are not subject to them. In reality all is here and now and all is one. and whose pale reflection is our sense of "I". of change. Changes are inevitable in the changeful. Consciousness is always of movement. What you call the universe. against which changes are perceived. this is the secret of happiness. As long as you identify yourself with them [body and mind]. Your own self is your ultimate teacher (sadguru). the unreal never lived. unshakable.I remain what I am: the "I am" immovable. is my spontaneous creativity. There can be no such thing a changeless consciousness. To believe that you depend on . and by helping yourself you help everybody else. Find what is it that never sleeps and never wakes. What was born must die. The real does not die. You are the changeless background. Only the unborn is deathless. for it is the goal. But such is my nature that all ends in joy. but earnestness alone does not liberate. Don't hold on. There must be understanding which comes with alert perceptivity.each will remain gold. Changelessness wipes out consciousness immediately. You need not stop thinking. It is disinterestedness that liberates. Only when spirit and matter come together. you are bound to suffer. nature. happens. It is only your inner teacher that will walk with you to the goal. eager enquiry and deep investigation. you can make many ornaments .

The self (vyakta) is the victim of this imagination. It is you who are in movement and not time. We dream that we are awake. we are not a process. Treating everything as a dream liberates. then continuous and intense. We are only dreaming. so see all as a dream and stay out of it. The world has only as much power over you as you give it. All you can say is "I don't remember". or you on them? Reality is neither subjective nor objective. Once you accept time and space as real. The disease is simple and the remedy equally simple. provided the effort is sustained. to see the false as false and abandon the false brings reality into being. Just as an unborn child cannot know life after birth. memory. Stop searching. nor is it desirable. absolutely paradoxical. Just turn away from all that occupies the mind. delusions and attachments end. Begin by disassociating yourself from your mind. until the day when all bonds are broken. You know how unreliable is memory. But reality is all and nothing. of inner ease and freedom indescribable.

The only happiness worth the name is the natural happiness of conscious being. A man who knows that he is neither body nor mind cannot be selfish. Don't separate and don't put false questions. once it is established. and remain firm in your understanding. the world is myself" becomes quite natural. acquire. everybody's welfare is his own. it will set itself right. you identify yourself for a moment with some particular ripple and call it "my thought". the essence and the surface of all there is. there is just no way of being selfish. All you are conscious of is your mind. anybody. you call it consciousness. You separate the painter from the picture and look for him. flowing ceaselessly in the bed of the body. Or you may say he is equally "selfish" on behalf of everybody he meets. like fire that continues by burning. that you are not a person bound in space and time. Think of the difference it would make! The mind produces thoughts ceaselessly. I neither act nor cause others to act. Use every incident of the day to remind you that without you as the witness there would be neither animal nor God. Nothing can make you happier than you are. in endless succession. and that is called doing. even when you do not look at them. for he has nothing to be selfish for. action. It is not so. I am timelessly aware of what is going on. from perception to perception. The mind and the body move and change and cause other minds and bodies to move and change. The mind is like a river. Somebody. The feeling "I am the world. When you know what is going on in your mind. All search for happiness is misery and leads to more misery. from idea to idea. awareness is the cognizance of consciousness as a whole. accumulate on behalf of the part against the whole. Understand that you are both. Accept it as a possibility and investigate earnestly. the totality of the mind. You may discover that it is not so. You need not set it right. You imagine being and doing as identical. not a body-mind. . the direct insight into the whole of consciousness. I see that it is in the nature of action to create further action.well with you. To be selfish means to covet. This is your waking state . as soon as you give up all concern with the past and the future and live entirely in the now.your consciousness shifts from sensation to sensation. Then comes awareness. Just remember what you are. The painter is in the picture. will tell you that you are pure consciousness.

because there is no person. you destroy it. But the desire for bliss creates pain. You cannot be conscious of what does not change. but where do his actions originate? There is no central point: each action begets another. Thus bliss becomes the seed of pain. You may be celibate or married. Universe upon universe are built on it. . the "I am this body. Just like a wheel turns round an axle.does it not necessitate a changeless background? Everybody wants to be active. this bundle of desires and fears" disappears. only a mental picture given a false reality by conviction. will you find respite from the mixture of fear and craving inseparable from the "I-am-the-body" idea. a monk or a family man. this chain of memories. The alternation of work and pause is not there. All consciousness is consciousness of change. it will be invariably based on imagination. You create it. that is not the point. Your personal universe does not exist by itself. My experience is that everything is bliss. which just don't exist. meaninglessly and painfully. No doubt imagination is richly creative. The entire universe of pain is born of desire. on assumptions parading as facts. past and future. The person. Even to talk of re-uniting the person with the self is not right. but something you may call identity remains. Are you a slave of your imagination. this mind. The world has no existence apart from you. As long as there is the body and the sense of identity with the body. This is the mystery of imagination. It has absorbed you so completely that you just cannot grasp how far from reality you have wandered. Give up the desire for pleasure and you will not even know what is pain. It is merely a limited and distorted view of the real. in endless succession. It enables me to become a person when required. Nothing was divided and there is nothing to unite. Yet they are all in space and time. so must you be always in the centre and not whirling at the periphery. that it seems to be so real. or are you not? Whatever decision you take. There is only imagination. Only when you know yourself as entirely alien to and different from the body. At every moment it is but a reflection of yourself. But the very perception of change . whatever work you do. First find the immutable centre where all movement takes birth. frustration is inevitable.

My world is free from opposites. [With self-awareness] you grow more intelligent. Having realized that I am with. unexpectedly. On mine there is no trouble at all. On your side there is so much trouble. As he [the gnani] gets older. I did not reason out that I should be free. without delay and friction. The mist of bodily existence is lifting . Awareness is the point at which the mind reaches out beyond itself into reality. The personality (vyakti) is but a product of imagination. things would fall in place smoothly and rightly. This freedom from desire and fear remained with me since then. the deed follows the thought. In awareness you seek not what pleases. Mere physical renunciation is only a token of earnestness. Another thing I noticed was that I do not need to make an effort. he grows more and more happy and peaceful. In awareness you learn. in self-awareness you learn about yourself. I became free from all desire and fear. Come to my side. eager enquiry and deep investigation. You are [lonely] as a person. Like a traveller nearing his destination and collecting his luggage. it is the self that believes there is a person and is conscious of being it. The self (vyakta) is the victim of this imagination. you must go beyond the mind. harmony pervades. You must work relentlessly for your salvation from sin and sorrow. but earnestness alone does not liberate. To know what you are.the burden of the body is growing less from day to day. and yet beyond the world. . I have also found that thoughts become self-fullfilling. without the least effort. It is the taking yourself to be what you are not that binds you. this peace and silence are my body. of mutually destructive discrepancies. Nothing troubles me. you can only learn what you are not.the mind is happy. but what is true. "Nothing is me" is the first step. he leaves the train without regret. The reel of destiny is coming to its end . I found myself free. I offer no resistance to trouble . There must be understanding which comes with alert perceptivity. The person cannot be said to exist on its own rights. After all. Of course. he is going home.therefore it does not stay with me. In your real being you are the whole. its peace is rocklike.

Pain is physical. it is a sign of our unwillingness to move on. infinite affection. Everybody behaves according to his nature. it became motionless and silent. so is a saintly life free from suffering. he knows that. just remember that you are the witness only. because all my knowledge was false. not being this or that. responding quickly. that "I do not know" is the only true statement the mind can make. expected nothing. dark and quiet. But I feel that I have lost nothing by not knowing. beyond consciousness. love. and the understanding acts. do not pity me. nor need it be regretted. My not knowing was in itself knowledge of the fact that all knowledge is ignorance. I know no sin. for all knowledge is in dream only and not valid. only pure being. The mind ceased producing events. to flow with life. nor sinner. making all interesting and beautiful. Now I don't do it any more. Beyond the mind there is no suffering. .The main change was in the mind.I wanted nothing. Pain is essential for the survival of the body. but just being. This void is also fullness. The other thing that I noticed was that I lost all my habitual certainties. unless one identifies himself with it. radiating in all directions. significant and auspicious. but not perpetuating the response. suffering is mental. but none compels you to suffer. A saint does not want things to be different from what they are. You understand that you are the witness only. I was undeceived. As a sane life is free of pain. Thus bliss becomes the seed of pain. My experience is that everything is bliss. Earlier I was sure of so many things. But the desire for bliss creates pain. I used to create a world and populate it. And above all. the real became natural and the natural became real. Now I know nothing. There is no effort in witnessing. The entire universe of pain is born of desire. Give up the desire for pleasure and you will not even know what is pain. I know myself and I find no life nor death in me. Spontaneity became a way of life. now I am sure of nothing. that is all. embracing all. You need nothing more. The ancient and ceaseless search stopped . accepted nothing as my own. There was no "me" left to strive for. Even the bare "I am" faded away. Don't identify yourself with the world and you will not suffer. Suffering is due entirely to clinging or resisting. It cannot be helped. Your distinction and valuation do not bind me. Nobody suffers in a play. [Now I live] in the void beyond being and non-being.

"I am" is the impersonal Being. unassailable. nor strive for anything to secure it. See yourself with desireless clarity. the personal appears and disappears. A quiet mind is all you need. all distinctions merge in it. while the gnani remains aloof. All else will happen rightly. When thus the mind becomes completely silent. nearer than the mind itself. endlessly creative. and it does not matter much what happens. for ultimately the return to balance and harmony is inevitable. dependence on anything for happiness is utter misery. It follows him. life and death. beautiful and joyous. If he can. open. Why desire at all? Desiring a state of freedom from desire will not set you free. or he lets things take their course. does not suffer. inner energies wake up and work miracles without any effort on your part. It is completely free of contradictions. it will always give you trouble. The impersonal is real. but it does not shatter him. He is happy and fully aware that happiness is his very nature and that he need not do anything. The person is relative. once your mind is quiet. The heart of things is at peace. The real is simple. that is all. it shines with a new light . he counts his risks and chances. As the sun on rising makes the world active. while my state is my own. totally uncaused. they are unavoidable. clear and kind. The real is beyond experience. The ordinary man is personally concerned. His [the gnani's] state tastes of the pure. It is ever new. he does the needful to restore the lost balance. independent. You know the real by being the real. but some are worse than others. undiluted bliss. because you are free. Nothing can set you free. more real than the body. therefore. Hold on to the sense "I am" to the exclusion of everything else. and the pure Being fundamental. so does selfawareness affect changes in the mind. Pain he may know. In the light of calm and steady self-awareness. Being and non-being. Pursue any desire. Pleasure and pain have causes. uncaused. ever fresh. "I am this" is the person. All experience is in the mind. He is friendly with the inevitable and. There is no such thing as the experience of the real. To identify oneself with the particular is all the sin there is.considering all factors. All desires are bad. To me. sure that all will happen as it must.

It all comes spontaneously. Let it be. It is like having swallowed some poison and suffering from unquenchable craving for water. Find it out and see its falseness. you must know the knower. They are modes of perception. In your present state. the paper is real. why not eliminate the poison and be free of this burning thirst? The sense "I am a person in time and space" is the poison.and vibrates with a new knowledge. you took the mind for the knower. Something prevents you from seeing that there is nothing you need. the words merely a convention. In time all things come to an end and new are born. Do not identify yourself with time. unproved and unprovable. Before you can know anything directly. It is one of the pecularities of a gnani that he is not concerned with future. You must not indulge in forecasts and plans. it is in the nature of time to put an end to everything. Is there a world outside your knowledge? Can you go beyond what you know? You may postulate a world beyond the mind. This is the essence of bondage . time itself is the poison. True knowledge is ever fresh. So far. Instead of drinking beyond all measure.the mixing of the real with the unreal. only the sense "I am" refers to reality. and it is valid for you only. but they are not the only ones. you need only hold on to the "I am". when the other person is only as real as he appears in your experience? . nor do I need to collect fuel. Between knowing and being there is no gap. do not ask anxiously "what next. Time and space are like words written on paper. you do not exist in them. non-verbally. Your concern with future is due to fear of pain and desire for pleasure. It does not concern me. The mind clogs you up with images and ideas. Who else can have your experience. born of memory and anticipation. Say: "Well." In reality time and space exist in you. but it is not so. new. you also are what you know. I am not combustible. to the gnani all is bliss: he is happy with whatever comes. what next?" Step out of time and see it devour the world. You take remembering to be knowledge. It wells up from within. to be devoured in their turn. unexpected. the "what" and the "how I am" are illusions imposed by destiny. [If you are still dreaming] it is because you have not really understood that you are dreaming. When you know what you are. but it will remain a concept. or accident. In a way. Your experience is your proof. which leave scars in memory.

just disregard it. open. It has power over you as long as you trust it. only the clarity of understanding. for you need no change. It is ever new. life and death. No happening affects your real being . pains and pleasures come and go. coloured by like and dislike. completely aloof. I do not expect. experienced and forgotten. It is me-mory and anticipation that create problems of attainment or avoidance. In remembering it. it will slow down and reveal the mechanism of its working. which gives it being. You may change your mind or your body. nor even your consciousness is yourself and stand alone in your true nature beyond consciousness and unconsciousness. This complete aloofness. but you can always put an end to your imagining yourself to be body and mind. No effort can take you there. remind yourself that only your body and mind are affected. Nothing you do will change you. Don't struggle with it. watch yourself steadily and live unaffected by your body and mind. not yourself. ever fresh. Nothing is done by me. is the mind based on memory. ever unborn and deathless. but it is always something external to you that has changed. It is completely free of contradictions. the light of unconditional awareness. not yourself. I just watch events happening. but the dreams flow before you. Deprived of attention. Remember that you are beyond the experiencer. you will not allow it to create imaginary problems. the quality of pure knowledge will emerge. What problems can there be which the mind did not create? Life and death do not create problems. clear and kind. . and you are the immutable witness. as if you were dead. either in the body or in the mind. knowing them to be unreal. What happens to the body and the mind may not be within your power to change. The real is simple. Whatever happens. Being and non-being. Do realize that it is not you who moves from dream to dream. Why bother at all to change? Realize once for all that neither your body nor your mind. everything just happens.that is the absolute truth. It means you have no vested interests. What prevents you from knowing yourself as all and beyond all. Just remain unaffected. To know that you are neither body nor mind. I do not plan. unconcern with mind and body is the best proof that at the core of your being you are neither mind nor body. Consciousness does not shine by itself. beautiful and joyous. all distinctions merge in it. endlessly creative. Once you know its nature and purpose. Don't be all the time immersed in your experience. It shines by a light beyond it in which it appears.

man knows God and God knows man. the bridge between extremes. But if you learn to look at your consciousness as a sort of fever. And that is your true state. As long as one is conscious. the balancing and uniting factor in every experience. which is possible only when you look at consciousness as something that happens to you. The totality of all perceivers is what you call the universal mind. In chit. alien. The totality of the perceived is what you call matter. which is beyond all existence and non-existence. Just like ice turns to water. and water to vapour. reasserts itself eternally. They are not. as something external. It is like light and daylight. the man shapes the world and the world shapes man. Sadhana connsists in . the witness is the subject. Why not investigate the very idea of body? Does the mind appear in the body or the body in the mind? Surely there must be a mind to conceive the "I-am-the-body" idea. The identity of the two. and vapour dissolves in air and disappears. each state conscious of the other. but the same light you see as daylight. and their relation of mutual dependence is the reflection of their absolute identity. you cannot step out of consciousness. and not in you. personal and private. so does the body dissolve into pure awareness (chidakash). Chit is the link. You people do not know how much you miss by not knowing your own true self. The person is always the object. The universe is full of light which you do not see. You imagine that they are distinct and separate states. You cannot fight pain and pleasure on the level of consciousness. manifesting itself as perceptibility and perceiving. In chit. [Between vyakta and avyakta] there is no difference. out of this very attitude will come the crisis which will break the shell. It is also absent when the mind is deeply engaged in thoughts and feelings. then into pure being (paramakash). really alone. And what the daylight reveals is the vyakti. loveliness and loving. there will be pain and pleasure. To go beyond them. Then. A body without a mind cannot be 'my body'. for the very stepping out is in consciousness. with nothing to intrude. 'My body' is invariably absent when the mind is in abeyance. you must go beyond consciousness. in which you are enclosed like a chick in its shell. harmony and intelligence. Of course. Consciousness is an itching rash that makes you scratch. The witness usually knows only consciousness. They are the same consciousness at rest and in movement. superimposed. suddenly you are free of consciousness.

the witness turning back first on his conscious. It just cannot be understood through words. and to it the tern "real" does not apply. the real is with you. to find enlightenment. what you are not. You must face the opposite. however sublime. I am one. First the design fades. pay no attention to your desire and fears. When all names and forms have been given up. so you cannot have an outer world independent of yourself. and are not ruffled by events. Plurality and diversity are the play of the mind only. You need not seek it. They are there because you find them interesting. But the Supreme is beyond all distinctions. The Supreme (paramakash) imparts reality to whatever comes into being. Unthinkable. in between it gets contaminated by imagination which is at the root of creation. there is only the necessary and the unnecessary. easy to dispel. The state of identity is inherent in reality and never fades. not you. you are at home everywhere. As long as it is merely aware. In reality there is only the source. Continuity as name and form is a mental formation only. radiates and creates pictures in space and events in time . It is what remains when all self-identification is given up as false . but if dealt with rightly. It is like boils and fever that clear the body of impurities. it gives birth to being. It is the immovable background of motion. but the Supreme is beyond all. it heals. At all times consciousness remains the same. But when the discriminative mind comes into being and creates distinctions. or could be. Your body is short of time. The process of creation continues. One who believes himself as having been born is very much afraid of death. the needless is wrong. During sleep the mind is in abeyance and so are pain and pleasure. Unperceived. Consciousness is pure in the beginning and pure in the end. the sense of being all there is. Non-being. death is a happy event. dark in itself. even dangerous. I am a dream that can wake you up. Unfelt. In some cases death is the best cure. Disease is painful. What I appear to be to you exists only in your mind. There is no good and no evil.

The world can be said to appear. [Now I live] in the void beyond being and non-being. accepted nothing as my own. The mind ceased producing events.it as it is. then the witness goes and pure awareness remains. The cloth was white in the beginning and is white in the end. because all my knowledge was false. except the one built by you. Then the all becomes the One. that "I do not know" is the . My not knowing was in itself knowledge of the fact that all knowledge is ignorance. You are the immensity and infinity of consciousness. I used to create a world and populate it. and in the end the cloth is plain white. First the design fades. Whatever is time-bound is momentary and has no reality. But your attention is fixed on things. pure being emerges as the natural state. You are always the Supreme. "am a witness only" remains and that too submerges in "I am all". you get born and die. There is nothing wrong with the senses. while to me the world appears and disappears. To you. then the background.I wanted nothing. The appearance may last very long on some scale of time. It is like washing printed cloth. that is all. You are not the body. Our world is real. it is your imagination that misleads you. This void is also fullness. The personality gives place to the witness. When through the practice of discrimination and detachment (viveka-vairagya). But I feel that I have lost nothing by not knowing. beyond consciousness. physical or mental. When your attention is off a thing and not yet fixed on another. What begins and ends is mere appearance. You see yourself in the world. There is no wall between us. Now I don't do it any more. I was undeceived. expected nothing. By focusing the mind on "I am". but ultimately it comes to the same. do not pity me. It covers up the world as it is with what you imagine it to be .something existing independently of you and yet closely following your inherited or acquired patterns. is realization and timeless peace. while I see the world in myself. There was no "me" left to strive for. The ancient and ceaseless search stopped . and very short on another. The other thing that I noticed was that I lost all my habitual certainties. you lose sight of sensory and mental states. but your view of it is not. the patterns and colours just happened . now I am sure of nothing. "I am soand-so" dissolves.for a time. on the sense of being. but not to be. and the One yourself. Earlier I was sure of so many things. in the interval you are pure being. Even the bare "I am" faded away.

only true statement the mind can make. If you think you have the strength and courage to desire. the changeless can come into its own. Invariably the object of desire destroys the means of acquiring it and then itself withers away. If you can stand outside your mind. as a clear understanding that you are not the body. The Supreme is the great harmonizer. don't dwell upon it. of every reaction.it can never happen.asserts your true being. you will soon find that total renunciation of possessions and desires is the most obviously reasonable thing to do. Freedom comes through renunciation. When you have seen the dream as a dream. Get it out of its grove by denying it attention. It is not so much a question of actual giving up the body and all that goes with it. you have done all that needs be done. Becoming selfish makes you weak. just see the futility of all change. or none of it. and stop complaining. Just turn your mind away. the tyranny of things would be absolute. Whatever may be the desire or fear. . a sense of aloofness. All possession is bondage. Go back to your attempts till the brushing away of every desire and fear. it does not matter. The very idea of going beyond the dream is illusory. Desire is merely the fixation of the mind on an idea. Don't try to reform yourself. Your mere looking will burn them up. You create the world and then worry about it. Do not expect the changeful to take you to the changeless . the guarantee of the ultimate and perfect balance -of life in freedom. You can do what you like. it burns through every obstacle. becomes automatic. Only when the very idea of changing is seen as false and abandoned. it is because you are young and inexperienced. it corrodes every container. No need of any acts of renunciation. that is all. Love all. because it teaches you to shun desire like poison. It is all for the best. The changeful keeps on changing while the changeless is waiting. There is no need of a way out [of the dream]! Don't you see that a way out is also a part of the dream? All you have to do is see the dream as dream. If you do not have the wisdom and the strength to give up. Why go anywhere? Just realize that you are dreaming a dream you call the world. The Supreme is the universal dissolvent. as long as you do not take yourself to be the body and the mind. of emotional non-involvement. It dissolves you and thus re. just look at your possessions. Your problem is that you like one part of your dream and not another. The problem is not the dream. Here and there you may forget. and stop looking for ways out. Without the absolute denial of everything.

which transforms matter into a vehicle of consciousness. that what is seen or heard. In that pure light of consciousness . Cease to be the object and become the subject of all that happens. and you will experience peace and freedom from fear. but my home is beyond. you will find that you are also beyond the object. without awareness there would be no consciousness. It cannot last. and yet remain beyond all experience. You got into it by forgetting what you are. It is pure awareness of being. and the understanding acts. You understand that you are the witness only. the source. For reality to be. which you have created. is neither continuous nor permanent and is based on a misapprehension. though it is wordless and silent. the flame and the burning wood. It is the instinct of exploration. You believe that you are not what you experience. They will go if you let them. This alternation of being and becoming is inevitable. is in the mind and not in reality. There is no reality in it. the flame consumes the wood. The world is but a succession of experiences and you are what makes them conscious. neither the "me" nor the "mine". There is no effort in witnessing. it is faith in oneself. as it is in the nature of becoming to seek peace in being. and you will get out of it by knowing yourself as you are. the love of the unknown. that brings me into existence. If in the state of witnessing you ask yourself 'Who am I?'.identification with anything in particular or in general. Consider. that both the subject and the object exist in you. The heat maintains the flame. and you look at everything as from a distance. in which you are neither the body nor the mind. The witness attitude is also faith. you will find yourself beyond the subject. but you are neither. just remember that you are the witness only. felt or thought. Without heat there would be neither flame nor fuel. Then your normal natural state reappears. nor life. the ideas of "me" and "mine" must go. You need nothing more. expected or imagined. the foundation of consciousness. without any self. It is like the heat. the answer comes at once. touched or smelt. Realize that every mode of perception is subjective. but in a different state of being altogether. It is in the nature of being to seek adventure in becoming. once having turned within. When you have found yourself. The world in which you live. Similarly. All happens in consciousness and you are the root. without being this or that. who else knows about it? Within the prison of your world appears a man who tells you that the world of painful contradictions. He pleads with you to get out of it.

The other thing that I noticed was that I lost all my habitual certainties. My not knowing was in itself knowledge of the fact that all knowledge is ignorance. It is also absent when the mind is deeply engaged in thoughts and feelings. . It is in the nature of being to seek adventure in becoming. No doubt imagination is richly creative. past and future. Now I don't do it any more. do not pity me. It is the instinct of exploration. [Now I live] in the void beyond being and non-being. the perfect lovable. Mind means disturbance. your search will be over. Due to ignorance you are looking for it in the world of opposites and contradictions. that "I do not know" is the only true statement the mind can make. I used to create a world and populate it. A body without a mind cannot be 'my body'.I wanted nothing. Universe upon universe are built on it. It has absorbed you so completely that you just cannot grasp how far from reality you have wandered. There is no such thing as peace of mind. Even the bare "I am" faded away. beyond consciousness. the Creator was. accepted nothing as my own. expected nothing. but my home is beyond. that brings me into existence. There is only light. Who knows the Creator? He alone who was before the Creator. But I feel that I have lost nothing by not knowing. This void is also fullness. All scriptures say that before the world was.there is nothing. There is only imagination. that is all. You are lovelonging for the love-worthy. 'My body' is invariably absent when the mind is in abeyance. Yet they are all in space and time. the source of all the worlds with their creators. This alternation of being and becoming is inevitable. not even the idea of nothing. You are really in search of yourself. Why not investigate the very idea of body? Does the mind appear in the body or the body in the mind? Surely there must be a mind to conceive the "I-am-the-body" idea. I was undeceived. The ancient and ceaseless search stopped . the love of the unknown. restlessness itself is mind. There was no "me" left to strive for. Earlier I was sure of so many things. your own real being. which just don't exist. When you find it within. The mind ceased producing events. as it is in the nature of becoming to seek peace in being. now I am sure of nothing. because all my knowledge was false. without knowing it.

consciousness exists in awareness and awareness is the reflection of the light on the waters of existence. It is disinterestedness that liberates. all kinds of things may come to the surface. you are no longer afraid. You need not stop thinking. Just be. There is nothing to do. Your own changelessness is so obvious that you do not notice it. When you realize that the distinction between inner and outer is in the mind only. don't react to them.realization. beyond "I-am-the-witness-only". Limit your interests and activities to what is needed for you and your dependents' barest needs. All that matters is mindfulness. since you do not know yourself. Save all your energies and time for breaking the wall your mind had built around you. beyond "so-I-am". as they have come so will they go. The harder the task. without losing one's grip on the levels left behind. Having seen that you are neither the "outer" world of perceivables. the deeper and wider his self. that is all. Be. The final stage of meditation is reached when the sense of identity goes beyond the "I-am-so. Don't hold on. Just be.The body appears in your mind. that you are neither body nor mind. your mind is the content of your consciousness. total awareness of oneself. Believe me. I do not even say: "be yourself". you are the motionless witness of the river of consciousness which changes eternally without changing you in any way. But you must be energetic when you take to meditation. and the now always. Just cease being interested. The "here" is everywhere. Meditation is a deliberate attempt to pierce into the higher states of consciousness and finally go beyond it. not the "inner" world of thinkables. Do nothing about them. beyond "there-is". by themselves. The universe is in you and cannot be without you. you will not regret. It is definitely not a part-time occupation. The art of meditation is the art of shifting the focus of attention to ever subtler levels. When you sit quiet and watch yourself. The world exists in memory. Remain as the silent witness only. memory comes into consciousness. or rather of one's mind. Do nothing. just be. The spirit is a sport and enjoys to overcome obstacles.and-so". beyond all ideas into the impersonally personal pure being. to go beyond. you must abandon them. Words can bring you only up to their own limit. Go beyond the "I-am- . No climbing mountains and sitting in caves.

it is the all-inclusive. the gnani is the Changeless Reality. [It is] single. it does not affect the network. changing name and shape. all-exclusive Life. With me. simple. neither objective nor subjective. felt or thought. Be nothing. Don't go along with it. Your experience is your proof. and you will experience peace and freedom from fear. but unperceivable. not yours. Is there a world outside your knowledge? Can you go beyond what you know? You may postulate a world beyond the mind. all life is his life. when one bulb burns out. touched or smelt. the main obstacle to realization is removed. when the other person is only as real as he appears in your experience? What prevents the insight into one's true nature is the weakness and obtuseness of the mind and its tendency to skip the subtle and focus . have nothing. Leave your mind alone. unproved and unprovable. it is the root of matter and the source of consciousness.the-body" idea and you will find that space and time are in you and not you in space and time. the only happiness worth having. This is the only life worth living. Neither material nor mental. As in a city of lights. except in its manifestations. As long as you are engrossed in the world. which makes the changeful possible. Once you have understood this. all is one. They dominate you only because you are interested in them. expected or imagined. and it is valid for you only. know nothing. in which birth is death and death is birth. Who else can have your experience. that is all. is in the mind and not in reality. unobjectival. the body acquires a new meaning and its transformation becomes both necessary and possible. all is equal. so the death of a body does not affect the whole. Realize that every mode of perception is subjective. inseparable. The entire universe is his body. that what is seen or heard. After all. turn away your attention from the world and turn it within. you are unable to know yourself: to know yourself. there is no such thing as mind apart from thoughts which come and go obeying their own laws. Not unknowable. The particular is born and reborn. When the mind has been put to rest and disturbs no longer the inner space (chidakash). indivisible and unperceivable. but it will remain a concept. Beyond mere living and dying.

keep steadily in the focus of consciousness the only clue you have: your certainty of being. it may be hardly noticeable. but that which knows that it does not know. When you follow my advice and try to keep your mind on the notion of "I am" only. The knower comes and goes with the known. is timeless. Not what was. That source alone is. the witness who stands aloof. unmoved and untouched is the watch-tower of the real. or shall be. contacts the manifested. you discover your self as the watcher. Go back to that source and abide there. which is free of memory and anticipation. there is no goal. You are the way and the goal. Know the world as your own creation and be free. being lucid harmony (satva) in action. the "I am" that sees pleasure and pain as inseparable sees rightly. must you know. only watching. The tree is perennial. The seasons change. The witness that is enmeshed in what he perceives is the person. Believe me.the gross only. but not the tree. All you need is to understand. One word may convey several and even contradictory meanings. yet it is a deep and fundamental shift from darkness into light.yet you remain. nor a way to reach it. expected or imagined. but the flowering and the fruit-bearing come in season. Watch your mind. delve deeply into it. When you stand motionless. you become fully aware of your mind and its vagaries. till the shell of ignorance breaks open and you emerge into the realm of reality. unknown is the source of knowledge. that what is seen or heard. but what is. there is nothing else to reach except yourself. you discover your self as the light behind the watcher. ponder over it. is in the mind and not in reality. This change need not be spectacular. As you watch your mind. For this. Yours is the desire that creates the universe. how it operates. inherent in the unmanifested. The "I am" that pursues the pleasant and shuns the unpleasant is false. Realize that every mode of perception is subjective. the point at which awareness. play with it. and you may grow them also in the future . and understanding is the flowering of the mind. . and you will experience peace and freedom from fear. from inadvertence to awarenesss. and gently but steadily changes its very substance. touched or smelt. how it comes into being. The source of light is dark. Awareness. Be with it. felt or thought. You are the tree. and is transient. dissolves dullness and quietens the restlessness of the mind. You have grown numberless branches and leaves in the past.

All exists in awareness. past and future. I do not imagine. I need no past or future. As I see it. called the "I". Transiency is the best proof of unreality. they grow to some point of relative perfection and then decay and die. There is only imagination. A perfect society is necessarily static and. The idea of responsibility is in your mind. The fact is that without you. The world does not yield to changing. imagines itself existing everlastingly and creates time to accommodate its false eternity. The bundle of memories and hopes. By its very nature it is painful and transient. Renunciation of the false is liberating and energizing. There is a contradiction between a multiple universe and a single cause. For this. you destroy it. What hope is there for the future? Of course. which just don't exist. At every moment it is but a reflection of yourself. it becomes an abode of joy and beauty. It is the changeless reality itself. You create it. Only those who think themselves born can think themselves re-born.they are born. neither the universe nor its cause could have come into being. It lays open the . it stagnates and decays. No doubt imagination is richly creative. See it as it is and divest yourself of all desire and fear. From the summit all roads lead downwards. To be. Universe upon universe are built on it. Either one or the other must be false. yet it did not. therefore. Or both. so no birth or death happens to me. When the world does not hold and bind you. Societies are like people . You think there must be something or somebody solely responsible for all that happens. Your personal universe does not exist by itself. There is no such thing. Reincarnation implies a reincarnating self. Truth can be expressed only by the denial of the false -in action. You can be happy in the world only when you are free of it. you must see the false as false (viveka) and reject it (vairagya). but things get destroyed by their own perfection. All experience is born of imagination. there have been and will be periods of harmony and peace. It is merely a limited and distorted view of the real. and awareness neither dies nor is re-born. when sattva was in ascendence. Yet they are all in space and time. The world has no existence apart from you. It has absorbed you so completely that you just cannot grasp how far from reality you have wandered. it is all daydreaming. There is no reality in ideas. The world had all the time to get better.

the physical space with all that can be contacted through the senses. First find the immutable centre where all movement takes birth. we do all sorts of things . The mind and feelings are external. understanding and enjoying. Abandon every attempt. The alternation of work and pause is not there. the origin and the end of all manifestation. undifferenciated. perception and cognition. or the will of God. Once you realize that all happens by itself (call it destiny. Just like a wheel turns round an axle. you take to be outside you. the ocean of existence. but not perturbed. so must you be always in . It is because the "I am" is false that it wants to continue. What time has brought about. Paramakash is the timeless and spaceless reality. This is enough. to realize independence. There lies your responsibility. while it is entirely a projection of your psyche. Reality need not continue . It cannot be perceived. not to the source of the "I am". hold on to the blind sense of being. but where do his actions originate? There is no central point: each action begets another. Being remains. meaninglessly and painfully. don't strive. you remain as witness only. the infinite potentiality. time will take away. let go every support. You are responsible only for what you can change. All you can change is only your attitude. but you take them to be intimate. There is only one mistake you are making: you take the inner for the outer. the mental space of time. You believe the world to be objective. in endless succession. It is unceasing work. the root of time and space. the source and origin. All that happens. don't struggle. for the "I am" is being rebuilt from moment to moment. it is indifferent of forms and expressions.all in vain. Chidakash is the expanse of awareness. but not self. This is the end of yoga. That is the basic confusion. mindless. What is in you. Everybody wants to be active.road to perfection. To strengthen and stabilize the "I am". but can be experienced as ever witnessing the witness. Mahadakash is nature. happens in and to the mind. and the only radical solution is to dissolve the separative sense of "I am such and such person" once and for good. perceiving the perceiver. yet beyond both. the prime cause in every chain of causation. brushing off all else. just be. the substance and the essence. You can do nothing. and the outer for the inner.knowing itself indestructible. and what is outside you take to be in you.being. both matter and consciousness. or mere accident).

Break the bonds of memory and self-identification and the shell [of the person] will break by itself. but at the same time I know that nothing is necessary. the inexhaustible possibility. It is simpler and easier to disregard them than to act on them. Believe me. and you may grow them also in the future . that life itself is only a make-belief. Stop hurting yourself and others. or shall be. You have grown numberless branches and leaves in the past. Whatever you think about with desire or fear appears before you as real. wake up. All you need is to understand that you are the source of reality. awakening will be not far away. but not the tree. Look at it without desire or fear and it does lose substance. and understanding is the flowering of the mind. nor a way to reach it. On mine there is no trouble at all. When you begin to question your dream. so is all self-concern a symptom of mental distortion which disappears as soon as one is in the normal state. must you know. and is forgotten as soon as it is set right. After all. Know the world as your own creation and be free. The seasons change. there is no goal. Come to my side. Things are as they are because you accept them as they are. You are the tree. I do what seems to be necessary. All happens as it needs. Pleasure and pain are momentary.yet you remain. I offer no resistance to trouble . not . The tree is perennial. You are the way and the goal.therefore it does not stay with me. at the root of all desire and fear is the feeling of not being what you are. Stop accepting them and they will dissolve. Yours is the desire that creates the universe. but what is. but the flowering and the fruit-bearing come in season. There is a centre that imparts reality to whatever it perceives. Not what was. stop suffering. You have to give up everything to know that you need nothing. there is nothing else to reach except yourself. You are the infinite potentiality. All you need is to understand. The universe is but a partial manifestation of your limitless capacity to become. that you give reality instead of getting it. You will recognize that you have returned to your natural state by a complete absence of all desire and fear. Just as a dislocated joint pains only as long as it is out of shape. all can be. Because you are. yet nothing happens. Nothing troubles me. that you need no support and no confirmation.the centre and not whirling at the periphery. On your side there is so much trouble.

Your needs are unreal and your efforts are meaningless. Your true being is entirely unselfconscious. Of course your body remains in the world and of the world. You become a power which gets all things right. that which has no borderline cannot be experienced in the common meaning of the word. Realize yourself as away from all that can be pointed at as "this" or "that". you watch all unconcerned. One can only be it. To realize the immovable means to become immovable. continues. but only as a part of the objective world. change following change. Discontinuity is the law when you deal with the concrete. without the least attempt to do anything about the event witnessed. but it is not really so.gross. for some personal reasons. Neither consciousness nor the "I am" at the centre of it are you. you are out of it. If it is not there. This choiceless love is the touchstone of awareness.even your body. once you realize. without knowing. on imagining oneself to be something: "I'm this. The continuous cannot be experienced. Consciousness implies alterations. When the mind is quiet. True awareness (samvid) is a state of pure witnessing. Who was born first. Your thoughts and feelings. You imagine that your possessions protect you. beyond all trace of doubt. we come to know ourselves as the pure witness. not of immobility. but the mind remains . Once you are in it. that the world is in you and not you in the world. but you are not deluded by it. but one can know what it is not. In reality they make you vulnerable. I'm that". words and actions may also be a part of the event. It may or may not imply intense outward activity. when one thing or state comes to an end and another begins. whatever may be its nature. We withdraw from the experience and its experiencer. The personality. You understand precisely what is going on. You are unreachable by any sensory experience or verbal construction. It may seem to be an attitude of cold aloofness. for it has no borders. Its identification with the witness snaps. subtle or transcendental. you or the world? As long as you give first place to the world. completely free from all self-identification with whatever it may be . I am talking of immovability. in the full light of clarity and understanding. because it does not affect you. which is between and beyond the two. you will find that you love what you see. and stand apart in pure awareness. you are bound by it. Go beyond. you are merely interested. based on self-identification. You become immovable in righteousness. It is definitely not the entire content of consciousness which is always on the move.

The happiness of being absolutely free is beyond description. you invite a fight. Give all your attention to the question: "What is it that makes me conscious?". an expression and a tool. But when you do not resist. and to it the tern "real" does not apply. rather than at the thoughts. look between the thoughts. If you want to live sanely. You insist that your world is independent of your mind. you do not fight every man you meet. No doubt imagination is richly creative. however sublime. How can it be? Your desire to know other people's minds is due to your not knowing your own mind. awareness is the only reality that can be. Then the universe is your own. To say that it is the universal love may be the nearest we can come to it in words. beautiful. which just don't exist. it makes everything real. until your mind becomes the question itself and cannot think of anything else. you are afraid of nothing. When you fight. and have infinite riches to share. creatively and happily. It has nothing to do with effort.deep and quiet. for there are no other people. You are the common factor. Just turn away. you just find your way between. To be free in the world. When you refuse to play the game. nothing more. it imparts reality to whatever it touches. Being is consciousness. The Supreme (paramakash) imparts reality to whatever comes into being. As long as you deal in terms: real . you are out of it. for in it all is real and. But the Supreme is beyond all distinctions. Where are the many points [of consciousness]? In you mind. "I am" applies to all. desirable. search for what . The Universal Mind (chidakash) makes and unmakes everything. Even a direct experience. First know your own mind and you will find that the question of other minds does not arise at all. It is the very source of reality. therefore. Yet they are all in space and time. There is only imagination. It has absorbed you so completely that you just cannot grasp how far from reality you have wandered. you must die to the world. It just cannot be understood through words. The moment you know your real being. Universe upon universe are built on it. need not be labelled as such. the only link between the minds. you meet no resistance. Death gives freedom and power.unreal. Just like love. merely bears testimony. it becomes your body. past and future. When you happen to walk in a crowd.

What happens to the body and the mind may not be within your power to change. This complete aloofness. without the least attempt to do anything about the event witnessed. There is the body and there is the Self. You will be a fully awakened witness of the field of consciousness. Be like an infant with nothing standing between the body and the self. You understand precisely what is going on. Whatever happens. Just remain unaffected. not yourself. True awareness (samvid) is a state of pure witnessing. It remains what it is. lack of discernment and insight. Ask: who desires? Let each desire bring you back to yourself. but you can always put an end to your imagining yourself to be body and mind. remind yourself that only your body and mind are affected. you watch all unconcerned. give your entire attention to the subject. Giving up desire after desire is a lengthy process with the end never in sight. in which the Self is reflected as "I am". its crudity and restlessness. When the mind merges in the Self. Because of the imperfections of the mind. you keep on discovering that you are ever more than what you have imagined. completely aloof. Once you are in it. It is like the white paper on which nothing is written yet. All that is needed is to purify the mind so that it can realize its identity with the Self. as if you were dead. be happy to be. It means you have no vested interests. To know that you are neither body nor mind. the self contemplates the body. which later grows into love of the self. which is the universe in its entirety. Between them is the mind. watch yourself steadily and live unaffected by your body and mind. Leave alone your desires and fears. instead of trying to be this or that. it takes itself to be the body.you are. but it is not really so. The ultimate value of the body is that it serves to discover the cosmic body. the tool and the expression of the creative fire within. you will find that you love what you see. either in the body or in the mind. . unconcern with mind and body is the best proof that at the core of your being you are neither mind nor body. It may seem to be an attitude of cold aloofness. the body presents no problems. Be like that infant. an instrument of cognition and action. As you realize yourself in manifestation. The constant noise of the psychic life is absent. words and actions may also be a part of the event. because it does not affect you. The pleasure to be is the simplest form of self-love. not the Self. Your thoughts and feelings. to him who is behind the experience of desire and fear. But there should be no feelings and ideas to stand between you and the field. in the full light of clarity and understanding. In deep silence.

whatever may be its nature. This choiceless love is the touchstone of awareness. If it is not there, you are merely interested, for some personal reasons. When I look through the mind, I see numberless people. When I look beyond the mind, I see the witness. Beyond the witness there is the infinite intensity of emptiness and silence. A general longing for liberation is only the beginning; to find the proper means and use them is the next step. The seeker has only one goal in view: to find his own true being. Of all desires it is the most ambitious, for nothing and nobody can satisfy it; the seeker and the sought are one, and the search alone matters. True awareness (samvid) is a state of pure witnessing, without the least attempt to do anything about the event witnessed. Your thoughts and feelings, words and actions may also be a part of the event; you watch all unconcerned, in the full light of clarity and understanding. You understand precisely what is going on, because it does not affect you. It may seem to be an attitude of cold aloofness, but it is not really so. Once you are in it, you will find that you love what you see, whatever may be its nature. This choiceless love is the touchstone of awareness. If it is not there, you are merely interested, for some personal reasons. The mind is discontinuous. Again and again it blanks out, like in sleep or swoon or distraction. There must be something continuous to register discontinuity. Memory is always partial, unreliable and evanescent. It does not explain the strong sense of identity pervading consciousness, the sense "I am". Find out what is at the root of it. The self you want to know, is it some second self? Are you made of several selves? Surely, there is only one self and you are that self. The self you are is the only self there is. Remove and abandon your wrong ideas about yourself and there it is, in all its glory. There is no compulsion [to be reborn]. You get what you want. You make your own plans and you carry them out. We grow through investigation, and to investigate we need experience. We tend to repeat what we have not understood. Stop making use of your mind and see what happens. Do this one thing thoroughly. That is all. You are like a child with a lollypop in its mouth. You may feel happy for a moment by being totally self-centered, but it is enough to have a

good look at human faces to perceive the universality of suffering. Even your own happiness is so vulnerable and short-lived, at the mercy of a bank-crash, or a stomach ulcer. It is just a moment of respite, a mere gap between two sorrows. Real happiness is not vulnerable, because it does not depend on circumstances. A man who knows that he is neither body nor mind cannot be selfish, for he has nothing to be selfish for. Or you may say he is equally "selfish" on behalf of everybody he meets; everybody's welfare is his own. The feeling "I am the world, the world is myself" becomes quite natural; once it is established, there is just no way of being selfish. To be selfish means to covet, acquire, accumulate on behalf of the part against the whole. There is no point in fighting desires and fears which may be perfectly natural and justified; it is the person, who is swayed by them, that is the cause of mistakes, past and future. This person should be carefully examined and its falseness seen; then its power over you will end. After all, it subsides each time you go to sleep. For reality to be, the ideas of "me" and "mine" must go. They will go if you let them. Then your normal natural state reappears, in which you are neither the body nor the mind, neither the "me" nor the "mine", but in a different state of being altogether. It is pure awareness of being, without being this or that, without any self- identification with anything in particular or in general. In that pure light of consciousness there is nothing, not even the idea of nothing. There is only light. In your world everything must have a beginning and an end. If it does not, you call it eternal. In my view, there is no such thing as beginning and end - these are all related to time. Timeless being is entirely in the now. Being and not-being alternate and their reality is momentary. The immutable Reality lies beyond space and time. The mind produces thoughts ceaselessly, even when you do not look at them. When you know what is going on in your mind, you call it consciousness. This is your waking state - your consciousness shifts from sensation to sensation, from perception to perception, from idea to idea, in endless succession. Then comes awareness, the direct insight into the whole of consciousness, the totality of the mind. The mind is like a river, flowing ceaselessly in the bed of the body; you identify yourself for a moment with some particular ripple and call it "my thought". All you are conscious of is your mind; awareness is the cognizance of consciousness as a whole. All experience is necessarily transient. But the ground of all experience

is immovable. Nothing that may be called an event will last. But some events purify the mind and some stain it. Moments of deep insight and all- embracing love purify the mind, while desires and fears, envies and anger, blind beliefs and intellectual arrogance pollute and dull the psyche. My intention to wake you up is the link [between our respective dreams]. My heart wants you awake. I see you suffer in your dream and I know that you must wake up to end your woes. When you see your dream as dream, you wake up. But in your dream itself I am not interested. Enough for me to know that you must wake up. You need not bring your dream to a definite conclusion, or make it noble, or happy, or beautiful; all you need is to realize that you are dreaming. Stop imagining, stop believing. See the contradictions, the incongruities, the falsehood and the sorrow of the human state, the need to go beyond. In dream you love some and not others. On waking up you find you are love itself, embracing all. Personal love, however intense and genuine, invariably binds; love in freedom is love of all. As long as you are engrossed in the world, you are unable to know yourself: to know yourself, turn away your attention from the world and turn it within. It is in the nature of creative imagination to identify itself with its creations. You can stop it any moment by switching off attention. Or though investigation. First you create a world, then the "I am" becomes a person, who is not happy for various reasons. He goes out in search of happiness, meets a guru who tells him: "You are not a person, find who you are". He does it and goes beyond. It is the person you imagine yourself to be that suffers, not you. Dissolve it in awareness. It is merely a bundle of memories and habits. From the awareness of the unreal to the awareness of your real nature there is a chasm which you will easily cross, once you have mastered the art of pure awareness. When the self-identification with the body is no more, all space and time are in your mind, which is a mere ripple in consciousness, which is awareness reflected in nature. Awareness and matter are the active and passive aspects of being, which is in both and beyond both. If you stand aloof as observer only, you will not suffer. You will see the world as a show, a most entertaining show indeed. You are not what you think yourself to be, I assure you. The image you have of yourself is made up from memories and is purely accidental.

there is little hope. for it is the first message from within. .You have never been. In one. past and future. free from the mental patterns of name and shape. Whatever you think about with desire or fear appears before you as real. It has absorbed you so completely that you just cannot grasp how far from reality you have wandered. that you give reality instead of getting it. Refuse to consider yourself as one. Things are as they are because you accept them as they are. so is the supreme state in the very centre of consciousness. it is but an opening for the light of awareness to enter the mental space. Like a hole in the paper is both in the paper and yet not of paper. for it is without quality and beyond consciousness. Stop accepting them and they will dissolve. which is beyond consciousness. which just don't exi Break the bonds of memory and self-identification and the shell [of the person] will break by itself. The supreme gives existence to the mind. in the other. The mind gives existence to the body. a person. It is simpler and easier to disregard them than to act on them Once a living being has heard and understood that deliverance is within his reach. But as long as you do not even doubt yourself to be Mr So-and-so. It is as an opening in the mind through which the mind is flooded with light. You let them come and go. Pleasure and pain are momentary. There is only imagination. Yet they are all in space and time.behind your back! [The person and the witness] both are modes of consciousness. You turn round and discover the sun which was there all the time . It will take roots and grow and in due course take the blessed shape of the Guru. [The centre of consciousness] cannot be given name and form. he will never forget it. By itself the light can only be compared to a solid. All you need is to understand that you are the source of reality. and are not ruffled by events. and yet beyond consciousness. you desire and fear. Look at it without desire or fear and it does lose substance. There is a centre that imparts reality to whatever it perceives. dense. When the shadow is seen to be a shadow only. Universe upon universe are built on it. You may say it is a point in consciousness. homogeneous and changeless mass of pure awareness. you stop following it. nor shall ever be. rocklike. The opening is not even the light. that you need no support and no confirmation. you are unaffected by pleasure and pain. Your loss is your gain. It is just an opening. From the mind's point of view. No doubt imagination is richly creative.

No relation [between Reality and its expressions]. Just turn away. You are not that person. it is nirguna. It has nothing to do with effort. you do not fight every man you meet. Don't try to reform yourself. In Reality. Neither learning nor action can really help. the changeless can come into its own. Relatively. at home in the entire universe. though in the world. Once you have found it in yourself. It is not you who desires. Ultimately nothing is mine or yours. The person merely appears to be. By no effort of logic or imagination can you change the "I am" into "I am not". As we put it. like the space within the pot appears to have the shape and volume and smell of the pot. There is no such thing as a person. but the timeless reality of pure being is not in movement. Just be one with yourself and you will be one with all. Do not rush into activity. When you fight. Only your sense "I am". look between the thoughts. you are beyond. In movement. what causes suffering is wrong. rather than at the thoughts. But when you do not . it is the person built on the foundation of your body by circumstances and influences. what alleviates it is right. The real is beyond. Absolutely. what brings you back to reality is right. The succession of transient moments creates the illusion of time. saguna and nirguna are one in Parabrahman. In the very denial of your being you assert it. for all movement requires a motionless background. Nothing is wrong with you. The changeful keeps on changing while the changeless is waiting. everything is ours. you invite a fight. There are only restrictions and limitations. When you happen to walk in a crowd. you just find your way between. It is itself the background.it can never happen. Do not expect the changeful to take you to the changeless . just see the futility of all change. but the ideas you have of yourself are altogether wrong. is not of the world. it is saguna. The sum total of these defines the person. There is only the Supreme. Motionless. fears and suffers. you know that you had never lost that independent being. all is real and identical. But it is only the mind that moves or does not move. and what dims reality is wrong. Only when the very idea of changing is seen as false and abandoned.

now see the urgent need of being free of this unnecessary self-identification with a bundle of memories and habits. Your daily life vibrates between desire and fear. it is all daydreaming. The "I am" that pursues the pleasant and shuns the unpleasant is false. First we must know ourselves as witnesses only. There is no reality in ideas. activity is by oneself for oneself. The witness that is enmeshed in what he perceives is the person. The fact is that without you. Don't ask how. which is both mind and matter and beyond both. Either one or the other must be false. there can be no failure.resist. and then realize that immense ocean of pure awareness. you meet no resistance. Or both. Discard every self-seeking motive as soon as it is seen and you need not look for truth. unmoved and untouched is the watch-tower of the real. dimensionless and timeless centres of observation. the point at which awareness. you must really have had surfeit of being the person you are. Trace every action to its selfish motive and look at the motive intently till it dissolves. If you persevere. This steady resistance against the unnecessary is the secret of success. the "I am" that sees pleasure and pain as inseparable sees rightly. The all-important word is "try". There is a contradiction between a multiple universe and a single cause. When you refuse to play the game. nature is work. only to be. Watch it intently and you will see how the mind assumes innumerable names and shapes. it cannot be explained. You think there must be something or somebody solely responsible for all that happens. inherent in the unmanifested. on fear of pain and annihilation. Allow enough time daily for sitting quietly and trying. One word may convey several and even contradictory meanings. you are out of it. like a river foaming between the boulders. There is a difference between work and mere activity. . As I see it. Work is by the whole for the whole. Try to be. Work is nature. On the other hand. contacts the manifested. What matters supremely is sincerity. on longing to possess and enjoy. Self-interest and self-concern are the focal points of the false. The idea of responsibility is in your mind. truth will find you. earnestness. You just keep on trying until you succeed. to go beyond the personality with its addictions and obsessions. All nature works. neither the universe nor its cause could have come into being. the witness who stands aloof. activity is based on desire and fear. just trying.

As the tiny point of a pencil can draw innumerable pictures. eternity is in the split moment of the now. It is like darkness in a closed room. refuse it the stamp of reality. Time is endless. Sadhana (practice) consists in reminding oneself forcibly of one's pure beingness. The wise man counts nothing as his own. The body is an abstraction. he will not establish any causal link between events and people. perceptions. which make up a universe. all names and forms of existence are rooted in non-enquiry. because the universe is as it is. nor a sum of particulars. nor will he allow any conclusions to be drawn. if interest is aroused. created by our tendency to seek unity in diversity. It can be done with comparative ease.Let the dream unroll itself to its very end. The door that locks you in is also the door that lets you out. Stay at it until it opens. of not being anything in particular. When at some time and place some miracle is attributed to some person. everything happens as it does. You are . "I am that" is a sign of not enquiring. How can a succession of transitory states be considered real? The illusion of being the body. of mental weakness or lethargy. even the body is an integration in the mind of a vast number of sensory perceptions. Noninvestigation is the thread on which all the states of mind are strung. The "I am" is the door. but to say "I am this".apparently. Only don't bring the idea of a body into the picture. It is there . only you are not at it. But when the room is opened. All happened as it happened because it had to happen. Look at yourself steadily . You cannot help it.mind is there only because it is not investigated. non-investigation. It is right to say "I am". it is open. Is the mind real? It is but a collection of states. in imagining and credulity. each of them transitory. It will not stop to focus the now. All states of mind. Find that point and be free. We miss it because the mind is ever shuttling between the past and the future. not examining. where does it go? It goes nowhere. Think of yourself. not even the totality of all particulars. you are beyond both.it is enough. though limited. All exists in the mind. As a matter of fact. memories and ideations. There is only a stream of sensations. No state of mind can be more real than the mind itself. each perception also a mental state. Ultimately you will come to see that you are neither the particular nor the universal. because it was not there. so does the dimensionless point of awareness draw the contents of the vast universe. But you can look at the dream as a dream.

Abandon the wrong ideas. all life is his life. it becomes nothing.existing painted doors. There are ideas and some of them are wrong. it does not affect the network. It is enough to stop thinking and desiring anything but the Supreme. changing name and shape. Being and non-being. endlessly creative. for when a thing touches Nothing. everything is afraid of Nothing. when one bulb burns out. open. life and death. The entire universe is his body. which will never open. It is ever new. We enjoy them for a time and then get tired and crave for the peace and silence of pure being. and denials right. you call it consciousness. awareness is the cognizance of consciousness as a whole. I have no shape. In one. you are unaffected by pleasure and pain. The Supreme is the easiest to reach. beautiful and joyous. all is one. The mind is like a river. nor name. [Sin is] all that binds you. ever fresh. you identify yourself for a moment with some particular ripple and call it "my thought". Assertions are usually wrong. I am nothing. As in a city of lights. The real is simple. all distinctions merge in it. For this we need the opposites and their apparent separation. so the death of a body does not affect the whole. we are fascinated by contrasts. and are not ruffled by events. for they are wrong and obstruct your vision of yourself.your consciousness shifts from sensation to sensation. the gnani is the Changeless Reality. On the contrary. It is completely free of contradictions. When you know what is going on in your mind. in the other. which makes the changeful possible. the totality of the mind. Only . The mind produces thoughts ceaselessly. [The person and the witness] both are modes of consciousness. There is no such thing as mind. and nothing is afraid of no thing. in endless succession. With me. the play of pain and pleasure. flowing ceaselessly in the bed of the body. the direct insight into the whole of consciousness. from perception to perception. all is equal. clear and kind. even when you do not look at them. you desire and fear. for it is your very being. It is attachment to a name and shape that breeds fear. You let them come and go. I am not attached. Then comes awareness. All you are conscious of is your mind. from idea to idea. This is your waking state . The particular is born and reborn.waiting at the non. We love variety.

You create it. beyond "there-is". At every moment it is but a reflection of yourself. and mine are mind and body. Liberation is a natural process and. Action does not lead to perfection. Assertion is bondage. happiness and death. and consciousness itself has its roots in me. Only when you know yourself as entirely alien . but the urge is there and shall not be denied. inevitable. self-imposed or accepted. The art of meditation is the art of shifting the focus of attention to ever subtler levels. you will not regret. Let the dream unroll itself to its very end. I am told I shall die. All your going and coming. you destroy it. To question and deny is necessary. refuse it the stamp of reality. but sooner or later the ship will burst in flames. Believe me. I am told I was born. In your ignorance. Limit your interests and activities to what is needed for you and your dependents' barest needs. Your personal universe does not exist by itself. frustration is inevitable. loving and hating . beyond "so-I-am". I do not expect it. You may not know about it. But you can look at the dream as a dream. I do not remember. without losing one's grip on the levels left behind. But you must be energetic when you take to meditation. You tell me I have forgotten or I lack imagination. You cannot help it. I am life. seeking pleasure. It is the essence of revolt and without revolt there can be no freedom. but what is it to me? Bodies come and go in consciousness. beyond "I-am-the-witness-only". Save all your energies and time for breaking the wall your mind had built around you. As long as there is the body and the sense of identity with the body.all this shows that you struggle against limitations. It is merely a limited and distorted view of the real.by denying can one live. you make mistakes and cause pain to yourself and others.and-so". It is like a spark of fire in a cargo of cotton. beyond all ideas into the impersonally personal pure being. It is definitely not a part-time occupation. shall seek understanding and liberation. Bodies are born and bodies die. in the long run. The world has no existence apart from you. nor expect the patently impossible. But it is within your power to bring it into the now. perfection is expressed in action. The same urge that seeks birth. The final stage of meditation is reached when the sense of identity goes beyond the "I-am-so. But I just cannot remember what never happened. Meditation is a deliberate attempt to pierce into the higher states of consciousness and finally go beyond it.

The succession of transient moments creates the illusion of time. I could not forget his words and by not forgetting. it contains everything and manifests everything. It is lucid. what you perceive is distorted and coloured by feelings of like and dislike. You face it most cheerfully when you go to sleep! Find out for yourself the state of wakeful sleep and you will find it quite in harmony with your real nature. as pleasure. and what has no cause is immovable. and you will see people and things as they are. told me: "Believe me. don't disbelieve me. But don't look for it in consciousness. I ceased having . for nothing contains it.to and different from the body. Make your thinking orderly and free from emotional overtones. the state of freedom from sorrow can be described only negatively. I have realized. It is like the daylight that makes everything visible while itself remaining invisible. On the contrary. Meditate on it as your true being and try to be it in your daily life. silent. Which does not mean it is perceivable. and the idea is not the experience. All search for happiness is misery and leads to more misery. will you find respite from the mixture of fear and craving inseparable from the "I-am-the-body" idea. All I can say is that true happiness has no cause. Once the guru told me: "You are the Supreme Reality". alert and unafraid. Your true home is in nothingness. without desire and fear. you are the Supreme Reality. peaceful. What is perceivable is pain and pleasure. I am telling you the truth. before he died. My guru. Because of the deficient and disorded state of your brain. The only happiness worth the name is the natural happiness of conscious being. Awareness is unattached and unshaken. Nothing can make you happier than you are. Somehow it was very simple and easy in my case. The light of consciousness passes through the film of memory and throws pictures on your brain. and you shall realize it in its fullness. Words can only give you the idea. Once you have found it in yourself. with clarity and charity. It is itself the background. in emptiness of all content. you will not find it there. Don't doubt my words. you know that you had never lost that independent being. for all movement requires a motionless background. independent of all divisions and separations. act on it". What relationship can there be between what is and what merely appears to be? Is there any relationship between the ocean and its waves? The real enables the unreal to appear and causes it to disappear. Don't look for it anywhere. but the timeless reality of pure being is not in movement.

I want nothing. Earnestness. born of memory and anticipation. not perfection. and all your problems will be solved. It is not that you must be free from the "I-am-the-body" idea first. "I am" is an ever present fact. invents creation and . until I could say in utter astonishment: "I know nothing.this is universal life. and not the other way round. every sorrow is my sorrow and every joy is my joy . Virtues and powers come with realization. You are not a person. your question about waiting for self-realization till you die is answered. is beyond the universe and. therefore. It is definitely the other way round you cling to the false because you do not know the true. Your own changelessness is so obvious that you do not notice it. Every existence is my existence. my real being. consciousness exists in awareness and awareness is the reflection of the light on the waters of existence. and the mind on consciousness. Once you realize that the body depends on the mind. Know yourself to be the changeless witness of the changeful mind. totally self-contained and independent. memory comes into consciousness. I found myself desiring and knowing less and less." All perceivables are stains. That is enough. The mind. is a precondition to self-realization. to the gnani all is bliss: he is happy with whatever comes. Have your being outside this body of birth and death. and consciousness on awareness. Neither God nor the universe have come to tell you that they have created you. while "I am created" is an idea. you are the motionless witness of the river of consciousness which changes eternally without changing you in any way. and then realize the self. The body appears in your mind. and yours too. The universe is in you and cannot be without you. Undeceive yourself and be free. The world exists in memory. It is what it is. It is one of the pecularities of a gnani that he is not concerned with future. beyond the categories of the particular and the universal. every consciousness is my consciousness. not before. obsessed by the idea of causality. They exist because you believe yourself born to die. Yet. You must not indulge in forecasts and plans. your mind is the content of your consciousness. The entire universe is a stain. Your concern with future is due to fear of pain and desire for pleasure.visions and trances and became very quiet and simple.

This is the mystery of imagination. you just find your way between. which is not a person. you must go beyond the mind. You know that you are. You can know it in action only. on assumptions parading as facts. or are you not? Whatever decision you take. whatever work you do. Then all schools are given up. Don't burden yourself with names. But if you want possitive knowledge. Are you a slave of your imagination. Do understand that what you think to be the world is your own mind. When you happen to walk in a crowd. The mind and the world are not separate. you do not fight every man you meet. All space and time are in the mind. All is a momentary appearance in . The identity. one can progress up to the point when all desire for progress must be abandoned to make further progress possible. you are out of it. and sadhana consists in shifting the emphasis from the superficial and changeful person to the immutable and ever-present witness. that is not the point. All you know is the person. But when you do not resist. The identity is the witness of the person. you invite a fight. When you fight. for you never doubted. the main obstacle to realization is removed. You may be celibate or married. Too much analysis leads you nowhere. The final answer is this: nothing is. in solitude and darkness. never asked yourself the crucial question: "Who am I". Once you have understood this. it will be invariably based on imagination. look between the thoughts. In each [school of yoga]. The legitimate function of the mind is to tell you what is not.then wonders "who is the creator?" The mind itself is the creator. Even this is not quite true. There is the identity of what you are. rather than at the thoughts. for the created and its creator are one. just be. The "here" is everywhere. that it seems to be so real. a monk or a family man. the last step is made which ends ignorance and fear for ever. beyond the mind. Just turn away. all effort ceases. When you refuse to play the game. There is in you the core of being which is beyond analysis. Go beyond the "I-amthe-body" idea and you will find that space and time are in you and not you in space and time. you do not know. It has nothing to do with effort. and there is the person superimposed on it. you meet no resistance. and the now always. Any name or shape you give yourself obscures your real nature.

Such knowledge is attainable and final. By self-knowledge I mean full knowledge of what you are not. we do not develop. After the stage of .reflection . you become a slave of the so-and-so. you or the world? As long as you give first place to the world. give all your attention to the level on which "I am" is timelessly present. When you realize that all is in your mind and that you are beyond the mind. Continuity as name and form is a mental formation only. All we have to do is to deny reality to our prison. Soon you will realize that peace and happiness are in your very nature and it is only seeking them through some particular channels that disturbs. neither asking nor refusing. easy to dispel. so see all as a dream and stay out of it. nor decay.Vishnu .rejection: Brahma . The three states are only varieties of the dream state. we are not a process. once you realize. imprisoned by one's ignorance. that the world is in you and not you in the world. Creation . There is only seeing. you are their slave. The more you discover. Who was born first. True waking and true sleeping only the gnani knows. then all is you. We are only dreaming. only self-knowledge can help you. that you are truly alone. Treating everything as a dream liberates. Merely assuaging fears and satisfying desires will not remove this sense of emptiness you are trying to escape from. As long as you give reality to dreams. The essence of slavery is to imagine yourself to be a process. Of course your body remains in the world and of the world. Don't you see that it is your very search for happiness that makes you feel miserable? Try the other way: indifferent to pain and pleasure.Shiva : this is the eternal process. All things are governed by it. we have no history. Both sleep and waking are misnomers. By imagining that you are born as so-and-so. In fact. both the seer and the seen are contained in it. Everyone creates a world for himself and lives in it. beyond all trace of doubt. you are out of it. but to the discovery of what you are there can be no end. but you are not deluded by it. to have past and future. Avoid the disturbance.the field of the universal consciousness. we dream that we are asleep. the more there remains to discover. We dream that we are awake. Don't create differences where there are none. to have history. you are bound by it. that is all.

To be a living being is not the ultimate state. you will stumble on the right balance of attention and affection. so does harmony (sattva) manifest itself as consciousness. at no other time. Undeceive yourself and be free. but your view of it is not. You are not a person. There is no wall between us. it is your imagination that misleads you. Consciousness as such is the subtle counterpart of matter. being the root of all being. You. Wherever matter organizes itself into a stable organism. It covers up the world as it is with what you imagine it to be . it becomes a part of living. there is something beyond. and all your problems will be solved. this sense of immutable and affectionate being remains as the ever-present background of the mind. Our world is real. comes the stage of examination and reflection. except the one built by you. consciousness and joy. neither living nor not-living. There is nothing wrong with the senses. It is you who are in movement and not time. Past and future will merge in the eternal now. you get born and die. Understand that the One includes the Three and that you are the One. which is neither being nor non-being. till your mind and feeling become one. because past and future are only in the mind. By repeated attempts. impart your reality to whatever you perceive. The consciousness remains. Whatever you think. and you shall be free of the world process. but in a latent. say or do.creation. consciousness appears spontaneously. much more wonderful. It is a state of pure awareness. They exist because you believe yourself born to die. This imparting of reality takes place invariably in the now. Once the illusion that the body-mind is oneself is abandoned. and your mind will be firmly established in the thought-feeling "I am". merge in it. "Being" applies to the now only. . the self. You may consider it in a way as a form of very subtle energy. To you. With the destruction of the organism. Have your being outside this body of birth and death. consciousness disappears. quiet state.something existing independently of you and yet closely following your inherited or acquired patterns. and finally the stage of abandonment and forgetting. Stop moving and time will cease. beyond the limitations of space and time. while to me the world appears and disappears. You see yourself in the world. while I see the world in myself. Just as inertia (tamas) and energy (rajas) are attributes of matter. death loses its terror. Just keep in mind the feeling "I am".

you will get the fruits of it. If he keeps it in mind all the time. I am what I am.created and break the chains of attachment and revulsion. is death and hell. he is bound to break the bounds of non-awareness and emerge into pure life. But for me it has no importance. aware and alert. that freedom is not something in the distant future to be earned with painful efforts. if you act on your belief. or somebody. to live in the unknown is liberation. Then man goes beyond illusion and his heart is free of all desires. To be.When you desire and fear. Let it happen. see your bonds as self. you must be nobody. and identify yourself with your feelings. and remain unattached to your creations. I have no desire to identify myself with anybody. you create sorrow and bondage. you will get the fruits of it. Keep in mind your goal of freedom. Let it happen. But whatever be the condition of your mind. howere illustrious. until it dawns on you that you are already free. To live in the known is bondage. and this is enough for me. with love and wisdom. What is born and reborn is not you. [For a Westerner] the right procedure is to adhere to the thought that he is the ground of all knowledge. The known is accidental. the result is harmony and peace. Nor do I feel the need to take myths for reality. You may believe in whatever you like [about reincarnation] and. To think yourself to be something. What is born and reborn is not you. the immutable and perennial awareness of all that happens to the senses and the mind.
