, electronics, and communication technologies and management strategies—in an integrated manner—to improve the safety and efficiency of the surface transportation system. As defined by the United States Department of Transportation, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) apply ―well-established technologies in communications, control, electronics and computer hardware and software to improve surface transportation system performance.‖3 Central to most ITS activities are four categories of technologies: – the ability to note the position and speed of vehicles using the infrastructure (e.g. rail lines, roadways, bridges, tunnels); Communicating – the ability to send and receive information, between vehicles and infrastructure, and between infrastructure and centralized transportation operations Sensing Computing and management centers; – the ability to process large amounts of data collected and communicated so that conclusions can be drawn and assessments made; and, – computer programs which process information gathered by ITS and develop operating strategies for transportation facilities.
Example of Intelligent Transport System in Malaysia are Variable Message Signage (VMS) and CCTV surveillance.
Variable Message Sign ( VMS ) Variable Message Sign also known as ( Changeable-, Electronic-, or Dynamic- ) Message Sign , often abbreviated as VMS, CMS, or DMS is an electronic traffic sign often used on roadways to give travelers information about special events. Such signs warn of traffic congestion, accidents, incidents, roadwork zones, or speed limits on a specific highway segment. In urban areas, VMS are used within parking guidance and information systems to guide drivers to available car parking spaces. They may also ask vehicles to take alternative routes, limit travel speed, warn of duration and location of the incidents or just inform of the traffic conditions. Advantages : i) Improve vehicles' route selection. ii) Reduce travel time. iii) Lessen the severity and duration of incidents. iv) Improve the performance of the transportation network. v) Provides a sharp legible message. Disadvantages : i) This system only applied in urban rural such as in big cities and not in small cities. ii) Not very visible during low level light conditions at long distances. iii) More moving parts lead to additional maintenance. iv) Smaller cone of vision reduces message legibility at close distances. v) Can not adjust illumination intensity for various light conditions. Improvement : i) Upgrade the system of the VMS. ii) Applied the VMS at both big cities and small cities.
CCTV Surveillance Is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. It differs from broadcast television in that the signal is not openly transmitted, though it may employ point to point (P2P), point to multipoint, or mesh wireless links. Though almost all video cameras fit this definition, the term is most often applied to those used for surveillance in areas that may need monitoring such as banks, casinos, airports, military installations, and convenience stores.
Advantages : i) To observe the drivers on the road are not driving recklessly. ii) Detect congestion on the road. iii) Notice the location of the accidents. iv) Locating reported stolen cars. v) Monitoring the traffic conditions vi) To detect traffic regulation violations, including speeding, vehicles going through a red traffic light, unauthorized use of a bus lane, for recording vehicles inside a congestion charge area and others. Disadvantages : i) Do not provide satisfactory images for police officers to use. ii) There is no guarantee that the cameras will catch any crime or unwanted behavior done on the road. iii) Peoples who are vandalism can easily damage the CCTV by sticking the chewing gum on it or anything else. Improvement i) Upgrade the system of CCTV. ii) Upgrade the quality of the images and videos of the CCTV as to make it easier to the police officers to handle it and captured the criminals.
