STANDARD 9 ± Collaborative Relationships: The teacher understands the role of the community in education and develops and maintains collaborative relationships with colleagues, parents/guardians, and the community to support student learning and wellbeing.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard²put the standard into your own words. Teachers need to relate to students on a deeper level than just the classroom setting, so by communicating with parents and community members teachers can get a better understanding of their students and their lives. Establishing connections shows that the teachers are interested in seeing the students succeed in and out of the classroom and want to be someone the students or parents can trust and rely on. Also establishing communication and connections helps to promote community where the parents want to be involved and want to volunteer time and services to the classroom. This in turn will lead to further learning experiences as members of the community, parents, relatives, whoever would want to come in and share with the students.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the standard. Sending out a parent letter is a great way to establish community and open communication lines with parents. It gives parents a sense of the teachers¶ background, who they are as a person, and makes them more personable. This provides parents with ease about who their children are with during the day. It also allows for the teacher to explain to the parents what is expected of their children and what types of activities they will be engaged in during the school year. It is informative and casual so that when parents do call or come in to have a conference they feel like they already know you which makes them more at ease to bring up questions or concerns.

3. A. If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in the future to further meet the standard. B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how your teaching will be impacted by the assignment. I sent a parent letter to my teacher and students¶ families to make them aware of my presence in the classroom and who I am. I am hoping my actions will gain the parents¶ support and they will respect me as a teacher and my ambitions in the classroom. I want the parents to see me as a professional but to also know that I am still learning with their children at the same time. I also hope establishing this connection will create a trusting safe environment in the classroom where the students and I can all learn from each other.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard. I feel that in a diverse society, sending out a parent letter is a must. Connections between parents and teachers are a must for a good class community especially in a diverse setting. Both groups need to be aware of each other¶s backgrounds and that the classroom will be a fair, equal space for students. I believe it also help to cross one of the barriers it takes to make a connection with families from different backgrounds and cultures. It opens up a line of trust and communication where the parents can feel safe in approaching the teacher. The letter also shows the parents a lot about the person who will be with their children all day so they don¶t have to worry about their students being judged or treated unfairly.
