ot one, but two kisses sealed the most
romantic day of the year. As William
and Kate appeared on the Palace
balcony, crowds surged forward to
watch the new Duke and Duchess of
Cambridge share their love with millions of people
across the world.
The weather may have been grey, but the mood
was bright from the start as 1,900 guests, including
Sir Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham and
Prime Minister David Cameron, nltered into the
maple tree nlled splendour of Westminster Abbey,
where scenes of excited chatter were already being
broadcast to royal fans.
Prince William and brother Prince Harry arrived
right on time in a shiny, burgundy chauffeur-driven
Bentley, exuding an air of suppressed excitement
before heading into St Edmund`s chapel to await
the royal bride. An hour later, like a modern day
Grace Kelly, the future Queen of England,
Kate Middleton, 29, stepped out of her Rolls-Royce
Phantom with father Michael, in a Fifties-style ivory
gown with lace applique foral detail, designed by
Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. Kate`s glossy
brown hair was covered with a romantic veil held
in place by a delicate tiara and her conndent, classic
style choice instantly connrmed her place as the
nation`s sweetheart.
As Kate reached the altar, where Archbishop
Rowan Williams met the couple, Prince
William couldn`t contain his happiness and the
world watched as he whispered the words Kate had
been waiting to hear: 'You look beautiful¨.
While the bride remained composed, only
fashing that trademark smile occasionally, the
28-year-old Prince was unable to contain his joy as
smile after smile spread across his face.
Yet, once seated in the open-top carriage the
Duchess of Cambridge, the newest member of the
royal family, began to beam with happiness. The
sun came out for the royal couple and sitting in
their magical State Landau they were greeted by
screams of joy from thrilled fans, as they travelled
another mile on a romantic journey that began at St
Andrew`s University eight years ago.
Just over an hour later, Kate and William stepped
on to the royal balcony at Buckingham Palace
looking very relaxed, surrounded by their families.
Like William`s parents Prince Charles and Lady Di-
ana 30 years ago, the couple were happy to respond
to an ecstatic public, crying out for a public display
of affection.
But once they`d sealed their love, and the
traditional fy past of a Spitnre and other aircraft
had taken place, Kate was concerned about one
fower girl who clearly found it all rather too noisy.
Looking at William, she gestured to the little girl
with an intimate, loving smile.
Surely another addition to the royal household is
just a matter of time.
