Writing: A Film Review

1. Name of film: The Day After Tomorrow;

2. What type of film: Science fiction disaster film;

3. Who/ wrote or directed: Directed, co-produced, and co-written by Roland Emmerich.

Based on the 1999 book The Coming Global Superstorm by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber.

4. Setting (When/ where does the story take place?): The story takes place in New York,
2004.

5. Characters: (Describe the main characters in the film – Who are they? What are they
like?)
The characters in this film are the following:
1. Sam Hall : A high school student
2. Jack Hall : Sam's father who works for the government.
3. Lucy Hall : Sam's mother and a physician.
4. Laura Chapman : Sam's girlfriend
5. Brian Parks : Sam's best friend
6. Luther : A homeless man who owns a dog named Buddha.
7. Terry Rapson : A Scottish professor and oceanographer
8. Simon & Davis : Rapson's two assistants in studying the weather.

6. Summary of the story (Mention the main events / problems and how they are solved)
The beginning: The main character of the film is climatologist Jack Hall. He is on an
expedition to Antarctica, during which he understands that the threat of global warming
on Earth is more than real - environmental disasters have led to the fact that climatic
conditions are beginning to change radically. (redicli) Natural disasters hit different parts
of the planet - from India to Japan, but all this is just the beginning, and the real horror
lies ahead - a new ice age is coming.
Main events/problems: Scientist Jack Hall is trying to warn the US government about
the impending giant climate catastrophe, about the onset of a new ice age, but no one
wants to listen to him. He says this because a piece the size of Rhode Island broke off
from a glacier in Antarctica. Meanwhile, astronauts observing the planet are
transmitting frightening data: three huge cyclones are formed. Once in the very center
of the cyclone, three helicopters of the Royal Air Force are killed, which were supposed
to save the members of the royal family.
The ending: In New York, a real icy apocalypse begins. The government decides to
evacuate the survivors to Mexico, which the global cooling has not yet reached. Jack's
son, a promising young mathematician, finds himself practically locked up in New York
in the National Public Library. Fearless Jack Hall, despite the raging elements, goes in
search of him. Jack finds Sam in the library, they get rescued by some government
helicopters and are flown back to Mexico. Most of the people in the Northern States /

Canada / Northern Europe die during the storm (including all the people who leave the
library during the storm to walk south). The US president - Perry King - also dies.
7. Who is your favourite character? Why?
My favourite character is Jack Hall. Even if he is never around for his family because of
how often he has to travel for his work, he is determined to rescue his son and even the
blistering cold will not stop him. He is a very brave character who thinks first of all about
the family, which is very important.
8. What have you learnt from the movie?
The lesson I have learnt from this movie is to take care of our planet, and to understand
the consequences of our actions. The film "The Day After Tomorrow" is dedicated to the
really most pressing problem of our days.
9. Would you tell your friend to watch this film? Why? Why not?
I would definetely reccomend this film to my friends. This disaster movie doesn't get
boring. In fact, it is deeper than it seems at first glance. In addition to directing, I want to
draw attention to the script itself: it is interesting and keeps the viewer in suspense.
Another reason why I would recommend this film is because I believe that each of us
must see and understand what can happen because of them, what consequences some
actions can have and how important it is to protect the planet.
