Sew a Lei for Memorial Day

Neighbor Island Schools - Information on the Preparation and Collection of Lei

1. All lei should be made of fresh flowers or ti leaves and measure 20-24 inches before tying. All lei must be tied. Schools may
accept donations of lei from parents and the community. Floral spray, such as ti leaf and anthurium bouquets, are welcome, but will
not be counted in the incentive contest.*
2. To avoid smashing and spoiling lei during transit, please do not use plastic or paper bags. Lei must be packed in boxes with
closeable tops.
3. Clearly mark the top of each box with your school’s name and number of lei packed in the box.*
4. NEIGHBOR ISLAND SCHOOLS must have their lei ready for pick up by 8:30 - 9:00a.m. on Wednesday, May 25, 2011.
The Office of Veterans’ Services, Department of Defense, on each neighbor island is coordinating pick-up times and locations. For
specific pick-up times, participating schools should call:
Hawaii - Joe Flores, 933-0315, fax 933-0317
Maui / Molokai / Lanai - Tamicko Jackson, 873-3145, fax 873-3147
Kauai - Tony Elliott, 241-3348, fax 241-3818
5. Each participating school must call in the total number of lei collected to their CAS / District Office on Wednesday, May 25,
2011.*
6. Complex Area Superintendents will report the lei count of their schools to the Communications Office at 586-3232 (Oahu) by
Wednesday, June 1, 2011.*
7. For additional information, call the DOE’s project coordinator, Sandy Goya, at 586-3232 (Oahu).
