3 Another way to erase the messy lines is to use your Polygonal Lasso tool. If you can’t see the palette. If you’re not satisﬁed. Practice and patience is the only way to improve your results. keep going until it’s perfect. 4 It takes some time to clean up the entire image. so you don’t lose any of this time-consuming work. Notice how the messy lines are gone. and navigate to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate to completely clear out any colour in your image. You can also click on Layer>New>Layer. By having it light. try messing with Levels instead. then click the delete button. you should only have one layer: Background. 6 Part 4: Inking Now you need to start adding colour to your smooth lines. hit D on the keyboard and begin erasing any visible messy lines at 50 or 100 per cent view. Make sure you’re working on your image at 100 per cent. At this stage. In other words. Open up your Layers palette. Go to your top menu bar. You don’t have to clean it all. Drag the line to ﬁt it with the sketch underneath. we’re starting on the head. Move your mouse over to the lines you made and rightclick/Ctrl-click. When you’re ﬁnished. make sure your ﬁle changes to the PSD format for Adobe Photoshop. 10 Right-click/Ctrl-click again and select Delete Path. such as the arm. See how smooth the curve of the line is? It doesn’t have to be perfect. which can be found when you right-click/Ctrl-click on the Pen tool. Don’t worry about curves for now. but don’t do too many points all at once. Type in the new name. If not. Your brushes should be on the default set.. This tool can be wonderful and frustrating at the same time. You can use it to add anchor points on your ‘line’ to create more detail. but it’s a good idea to make it ﬁt pretty closely. Begin somewhere on the drawing by clicking on basic points. Set your tool on Brush and click OK. 6 Click on the Add Anchor Point tool and click in the middle of the line. Select Stroke Path. This time you’re going to have to use more than one to ﬁt the lines to your sketch. because using one won’t normally ﬁt such a big area perfectly. Pen tool techniques The Pen tool is a magical tool if you know what you’re doing with it.34 Tutorial Draw ﬁgures in an anime style Inking continued. and click OK. Now choose a longer part of the body. and drag the line over to the sketch line. Once you save. Rename your Layer 1 by right-clicking and selecting Layer Properties. 7 Repeat the last step with the rest of the lines: use the Add Anchor Point tool and drag the line. Then click on the upper box with the dropdown arrow. click on the next arrow you see (not the scroll bar).

Adjust the bars to achieve a certain hue to your line art. It simply hides that layer so you can focus on something else in the picture. It will leave you with the background layer as a simple white layer. go to your Layers palette window and click on the eye square next to the Line Art layer. Finish the rest of the basic lines. then right-click/Ctrl-click again and delete your path. again. Click on the Paint Bucket tool and ﬁll in the layer with white. The further the slider is to the left. comes out much better with amazing quality. 3 Once you’re ﬁnished. hit Stroke to stroke your path. 4 Next. 1 Now you need to ink some ﬁngers. and it should make your black lines disappear as well. patience will pay off. the more the colour will appear. add a new layer between the Background layer and the Line Art layer. adding anchor points where they’re needed. but. stop and go on to the next step. Is it satisfactory? Do the lines seem smooth enough? The Pen tool’s clean lines make the colouring process a lot easier. and Saturation is how much of that colour you want in it. you’ll normally have to drag that to the right to see your colours. This will ﬂatten the layers that aren’t hidden like the ones you hid in the previous step. 6 Click on your Line Art layer to make it appear again. This erases the sketch lines underneath. overall. the paler the colour will be. we’ve used a teal-green hue to match the picture. Click the box labelled ‘Colourise’ and ‘Preview’. the hue is the colour you want to use..tut_draw 35 8/6/05 1:12:00 pm . 2 Right-click/Ctrl-click. You can change this later on if you wish. The eye will disappear. With black. Since ﬁngers are a lot smaller and have way more curves than you could possibly imagine. if you’re starting with the arm. the path needs to be fairly close to the sketch. you’ll be using a lot of anchor points. 5 Go to Layer>Merge Visible at the top menu. 7 Make sure your Line Art layer is selected (by simply clicking on it). and to the right. then go to Image> Adjustments>Hue/Saturation.Part 5: Perfecting your lines Finish inking the rest of your lines and merge all the layers. The sketch is now ﬁnished and ready for colouring. Lightness is the shade or highlight of the colour. Using Hue/Saturation With Hue/Saturation. Your picture.
