nated the Quill Awards for
journalism, led by deputy
editor Jill Baker’s moving
account of battling cancer.
She won the Gold Quill for
being judged the best
category winner at the Mel-
bourne Press Club awards at
Crown Palladium last night.

Jill Baker won the Best
Feature in Print category for
her account of fighting
breast cancer after the sud-
den death of her husband.
The judges said Jill’s story,
‘‘The Big C and Me’’, was a
gift to anyone battling cancer
or the loss of a loved one.
‘‘Painfully raw in its
honesty, yet often amusing,
Jill’s unrelenting narrative
exposed her wounded soul
to the world, inspiring and
giving strength to thou-
sands of readers,’’ the
judges said. ‘‘It was a
staggeringly good read.’’
Laurie Oakes completed a
rare double when he won the
Graham Perkin Australian
Journalist of the Year
Award. Oakes, also a com-
