Introduction
Tourism in India is important for the country's economy and is growing
rapidly. The World Travel and Tourism Council calculated that tourism
generated ₹16.91 lakh crore (US$220 billion) or 9.2% of India's GDP in
2018 and supported 42.673 million jobs, 8.1% of its total employment.
The sector is predicted to grow at an annual rate of 6.9% to ₹32.05 lakh
crore (US$430 billion) by 2028 (9.9% of GDP).In October 2015, India's
medical tourism sector was estimated to be worth US$3 billion, and it is
projected to grow to US$7–8 billion by 2020. In 2014, 184,298 foreign
patients travelled to India to seek medical treatment.

The Ministry of Tourism designs national policies for the development


and promotion of tourism. In the process, the Ministry consults and
collaborates with other stakeholders in the sector including various
central ministries/agencies, state governments, union territories and
private sector representatives. Concerted efforts are being made to
promote niche tourism products such as rural, cruise, medical and
eco-tourism. The Ministry of Tourism maintains the Incredible India
campaign focused on promoting tourism in India.
Visa policy of india
To enter India citizens of other countries require a Visa and an official
passport. The foreigners must apply for a Visa at their local Indian
embassy or consulate, with the growth of technology India has recently
implemented an online method for citizens of 168 countries to apply for
an e-Tourist Visa.

Nationals of Bhutan, Nepal and Maldives do not require a visa to enter


the Republic of india.

Protected area permit and Restricted area permit is required to enter the
area of some states that come under this category.
A Protected Area Permit (PAP) is required to enter the states of
Nagaland and Sikkim and some parts of the states of Arunachal
Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Mizoram,
Rajasthan and Uttaranchal. A Restricted Area Permit (RAP) is required
to enter the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Sikkim. Special
permits are needed to visit the Lakshadweep islands.

As a result of the new visa policy, 56,477 tourists arrived on an e-Tourist


Visa during October 2015, compared with 2,705 tourist arrivals during
October 2014 (just before the facility was introduced), representing a
1987.9% increase. During the period from January to October 2015, a
total of 258,182 tourists arrived on an e-Tourist Visa, a 1073.8% increase
on the 21,995 tourist arrivals during the same period in 2014 (before the
e-Tourist Visa was available).

The golden triangle

Agra- Located on the banks of River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh, Agra is a


popular tourist destination as it is home to one of the 7 wonders of the
world, the Taj Mahal. It is a sneak peek into the architectural history and
legacy of the Mughal empire with two other UNESCO World Heritage
Sites Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. History, architecture, romance all
together create the magic of Agra, and hence, makes for a must-visit for
anyone living in or visiting India.
Jaipur- Jaipur is Rajasthan’s biggest city and its capital. It is know as the
Pink City due to the distinct color of its buildings. The ‘pink’ of the Pink
City is Gerua in which the city was coated during the visit of the Prince of
Wales in 1905-06. Jaipur is known as much for its fascinating
monuments and colorful markets as it is for its gorgeous handloom
garments and wonderfully laid-out gardens. It is home to the fascinating
hawa mahal, the City palace ,the astrological marvel the jantar mantar,
the jewel of jaipur the Rambagh palace, the serene Jal Mahal, the rustic
Jaigarh fort and various other architectural marvels.
Delhi- Delhi is both a union territory within India, as well as a city, and
features two very different worlds: New Delhi and Old Delhi. The former,
inaugurated by the British in 1931 to serve as the imperial capital, is the
nation's modern capital and seat of government, while Old Delhi is
considered by many as the symbolic heart of the greater metropolitan
area.

One of the most populous regions in the world, Delhi is a heady mix of
tradition and modernity, important as both a religious center and India's
busiest international gateway. Its history is as old as the ancient Yamuna
River, one of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism and a natural dividing
line between New Delhi to the west and Old Delhi to the east.

It is home to various structures such as; the Red fort built by the mughal
ruler shah jahan in the 17th century, the tallest minaret in India the Qutub
minar, the magnificent Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the serene lotus
temple, the iconic India gate, one of the oldest mosques in india the
jama masjid, the serene tomb of humayun, the splendid Hindu
Akshardham temple, the age old Purana Qila, and various other marvels
in architecture.
Environmental Tourist destinations
Uttaranchal- Devbhoomi Uttarakhand is the state in India one can easily
fall in love with. The surreal landscape that comprises lofty Himalayas,
glistening streams, eye-catching meadows, imposing glaciers and
surreal lakes, all make Uttarakhand a coveted tourist destination in
Indian Himalayas. The state is divided into two regions: Garhwal and
Kumaon. Each of these offers plenty of opportunities for tourism,
sightseeing, adventure and wildlife. Dotted with sacred Hindu temples
and trekking trails, this North Indian state is a travel destination where
along with seeking the blessing of the Almighty, one can indulge in
adventure and recreational activities.

The notable Tourist destinations are- Auli is a haven for ski enthusiasts
and a place to get a surreal view of the nanda devi, mana parbat and
dunagiri

Nainital is nestled amidst beautiful peaks thereby offering a scenic


getaway to one and all. Situated by the renowned Naini Lake, this lake
city boasts of a plethora of scenic spots such as Eco Cave Gardens.

Ranikhet, also referred as “Queen”s Land”, is one of the most scenic


tourist places in Uttarakhand. One can not only get mesmerized by the
pristine beauty here but also enjoy trekking trails. For all those looking
forward to complete rejuvenation of mind and body, Ranikhet is a perfect
place.Known as “abode of Gods”,

Chamoli is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Uttarakhand. This


breathtaking place is home to a plethora of beautiful shrines and
temples, and has something to offer everyone. Presenting a perfect
combination of adventure and serenity, the panoramic vistas are sure to
take your breath away.

Jim Corbett attracts wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers from far and
wide. This national park is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna,
and is definitely a treat for sore eyes. Enjoying a pleasant climate, the
park organizes hiking trails as well as safari rides.
Western ghats- The Western Ghats is home to hill stations, biodiversity
hotspots, waterfalls, rivers, plantation towns, monuments, temples, and
everything else in between. This Ghats touch states including Karnataka,
Kerala, Maharashtra, and Goa. Below are some of the best places to
explore in the Western Ghats for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Agumbe- One of the most popular places to explore in the Western


Ghats is the beautiful town, Agumbe. Located in the hilly regions of
Karnataka in the Shimoga district, this town is known for its lush forests
and abundant wildlife. With several trekking trails and nature paths,
Agumbe is a paradise for nature lovers. Not only this, the region is home
to many revered temples and monuments. Tourists often love to include
Sringeri in their itinerary while visiting Agumbe.

Dandeli- For those who love adventure, Dandeli is the best place to be.
A pristine small town in the Western Ghats, Dandeli is a renowned
wildlife habitat visited by thousands of tourists every year. Wildlife
safaris, trekking, camping, and whitewater rafting, the town has
everything to allure both wildlife enthusiasts and adventure seekers. It is
indeed one of the most popular places to visit in Karnataka for an
unforgettable vacation.

Chikmagalur- Popularly called the ‘Coffee Land of Karnataka,


Chikmagalur is another famous hill station in the Western Ghats. Lush
green forests, pleasant aroma of coffee plantations, mystical waterfalls,
and various temples make Chikmagualr a must-visit destination.
Whether you are an ardent trekker, nature lover, spiritual seeker, or
someone looking for a relaxing getaway, Chikmagalur should be your
next travel destination. Kudremukh, Sringeri Sharada Peetham, Coffee
Museum Chikmagalur, Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, and Hebbe Falls are
some of the top tourist attractions in the town.
Conclusion
Tourism is a major driver of economic growth globally. India’s tourism
industry is experiencing a strong period of growth, driven by the
burgeoning Indian middle class, growth in high spending foreign tourists
and coordinated government campaigns to promote “incredible India”.
For a developing country like India which is on the path of modern
economic growth through structural transformation of the economy,
tourism is the right vehicle. With its forward and backward linkages with
a host of sectors like transport, hospitality, education, health, banking,
etc. India is all set to reap full potential of this vibrant sector
