Purchase pr ice of any mot or is gener ally insignificant when
compared t o it s r unning cost s over a 20 year life cycle.
For example:
• Typical 75kW, 4P Mot or Pr ice $4,500
• Typical Mot or Efficiency @ 75% F/L 95.6%
• Est imat ed Annual Hour s of Use 8200 hr s
• Aver age Ener gy Pr ice $0.14/kW h
• Hence, Annual Cost of Ener gy
Consumpt ion at 75% Full Load $67,500
• Cost of Ener gy Consumed
over 20 year Ser vice Life $1,350,000
The purchase pr ice represent s just 0.5% of t he ener gy cost
of r unning t he mot or!!!
The following gr aph shows t he difference in efficiency of (A)
Toshiba High Efficiency 21st Cent ur y mot or s, (B) St andard
MEPS 2006 compliant mot or s and (C) t ypical mot or s over
5 year s old (MEPS 2002) over a r ange of out put s.
EFFICIEN CY CO MPARISO N
Mot or efficiency is one fact or t hat can significant ly affect
r unning cost s of any mot or under given set of condit ions. Small
improvement s in efficiencies can result in big savings in annual
r unning cost s. Consider following compar ison of r unning
cost s bet ween previous MEPS# compliant St andard Efficiency
mot or s ver sus High Efficiency mot or s complying wit h MEPS
2006. (# Minimum Ener gy Perfor mance St andards requirement
as per AS1359.5)
Using a t ypical 75kW 4 pole mot or as an example, t he cost
saving est imat es can be as follows:
(* ) Running Cost = kW x Load fact or x Energy Rat e x Op. Hours
Efficiency
Thus,
LI FETI ME COST SAVI NGS* = $ 62,400
LI FETI ME CO

SAVI NGS* = 410,000 Kgs
* for 20 yr ser vice
PAY-BACK
• Typical cost of Toshiba 75kW, 4P HE mot or = $4,500
• Year ly Power Cost Saving (at 8200 Hr s) = $3,120
• Purchase Pr ice Pay-Back Per iod = < 1.5 year s
CO N CLUSIO N
W hen evaluat ing mot or s for purchasing, mot or user s should
place a high value on t he r unning cost saving advant ages as
compared t o purchase pr ice. Any higher init ial purchase pr ice
will be quickly recovered by t he reduced r unning cost s of t he
