Dar Al Rahmah

Name: ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Surah Al-Baqarah (Quran 2:285-286)

Explanation of the verses
We learn from the first verse that each of the believers of Islam believes that Allah is the One and Only and
the Sustainer, there is no deity (God) worthy of worship except Him and there is no Lord except Him. The
believers also believe in all Allah's Prophets and Messengers, in the Books that were revealed from heaven
to the Messengers and Prophets, who are the servants of Allah. Also, the believers (Muslims) do not
differentiate between any of the Prophets, such as, believing in some of them and rejecting others. All of
Allah's Prophets and Messengers are, to the believers, truthful, righteous, and they were each guided to
the path of righteousness, even when some of them bring changes to the Law of some others by Allah's
permission.

285. The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to Him from His Lord, As do the men of
Faith. Each one (of them) believes In Allah, His angels, His books, and His Messengers. "We
make no distinction (They say) between one and another of His Messengers." and They say:
"We hear, and we obey: (We seek) Your forgiveness, Our Lord, and to You is the end of all
journeys."

286. On no soul does Allah place a burden (hardship) greater than it can bear. It gets every good
that it earns, and it suffers every evil that it earns. (Pray:) "Our Lord! Do not punish us if we
forget or fall into error; Our Lord! Do not give us a burden like that which You did give on those
before us; Our Lord! Do not give us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out
Our sins, and grant us Forgiveness. Have Mercy on us. You are our Mawla (Protector); help us
against those who stand against faith."

Later on, the Law of Muhammad (saw), the Final Prophet and Messenger from Allah, changed all the laws
of the Prophets before him. So when the final hours of this earth will come, the Prophet’s (saw) law (sent
by Allah) will remain the only valid law, and all the while a group of his Ummah will always be on the path
of truth, apparent and dominant. These people who will always be on the path of truth are the ones who
hear and obey (Allah’s orders) and they ask Allah for forgiveness.
In the second ayah, Allah tells us that he does not place a burden on anyone that they cannot bear. Allah
does not ask a soul to go beyond its ability. This only shows Allah’s kindness, compassion and generosity
towards His creation. Even though Allah will question His servants and will judge them, He will only punish
for what somebody is able to protect himself from. With the things you cannot protect yourself from; you
will not be punished for.
Allah then continues to tell us that we will get reward for the good that we do but will also get punished for
the evil we do. Allah then tells his servants to make duah to him (so that He will accept the duah). We ask
Allah not to punish us if we forget or make mistakes which are sins.
Then we continue with “Our Lord! Do not give us a burden like that which You did give on those before us”.
Who are the people before us? The Christians and Jews. So here we are asking Allah not to give us the
difficult deeds that the previous nations had to perform. Allah sent Prophet Muhammad (saw), a Prophet
of Mercy, to bring us the final law. This law changes some of the deeds that people had to perform.
We then ask “Our Lord! Do not give us a burden greater than we have strength to bear”. So for all the
duties and hardships we do face, we ask Allah not to give us anything that we cannot cope with.
We then ask Allah to blot out our sins. Allah knows the mistakes we make so we need to constantly ask
Allah to forgive us for these. We ask Allah to forgive us for making these mistakes and at the same time not
to expose our errors and evil deeds. We then ask Allah to have mercy on us. They say that those who
commit error need three things: Allah's forgiveness for what is between Him and them, that He conceals
these errors from His other servants, and thus does not expose them before the servants, and that He
grants them immunity from further error.''
We then go on to say “You are our Mawla” meaning, You are our supporter and helper, our trust is in You,
we need You for each and every type of help and our total reliance is on You. There is no power or strength
except from You.
We finally ask Allah to give us victory over the disbelieving people) those who rejected Your religion,
denied Your Oneness, refused the Message of Your Prophet , worshipped other than You and associated
others in Your worship. Give us victory and make us prevail above them in this and the Hereafter.
Ibn Jarir recorded that Abu Ishaq said that whenever Mu`adh would finish reciting this Surah, he would say
“Amin”
Ibn `Abbas stated, "While the Messenger of Allah was with Jibril, he heard a noise from above. Jibril lifted
his sight to the sky and said, `This is a door that was opened just now in heaven, and it was never opened
before.' An angel came down through the door to the Prophet and said, `Receive the good news of two
lights that you have been given and which no Prophet before you was given: the Opener of the Book (Al -
Fatihah) and the last Ayat in Surat Al-Baqarah. You will not read a letter of them, but you will be granted its
benefit.''' This Hadith was collected by Muslim and An-Nasa'i, and this is the wording collected by An-
