Franklin D. Roosevelt once said Men are not prisoners of fate, but only prisoners of their own minds. This quote means that men know what is right from wrong and they know which decision is the right one. I agree with this quote because you are the only individual that is in control of your own mind and therefore, nobody can persuade you into making wrong decisions in life or make you do something that you do not want to do. This quote can be proven true in both William Golding s Lord of the Flies and Earnest J. GainesA Lesson Before Dying. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding proves this quote is true through the use of characterization, a graphic or vivid verbal description, and theme, the main idea suggested in a work. In A Lesson Before Dying, Earnest J. Gaines proves this quote is true through the use of plot, the events in a story, and characterization, a graphic or vivid verbal description. Lord of the Flies is about a group of little boys who get stranded on a deserted island and they become savage and uncivilized and later on learn the true meaning of civilization. A Lesson Before Dying is about a man named Jefferson and he is convicted of murder and sentenced to death.Jefferson claims he is innocent of the crime. He says he was on his way to a bar, but changed his mind and decided to tag along with two men who were on their way to a liquor store. Upon arriving there, the two men began arguing with the storeowner, and a shootout happened. The storeowner and the two men died, and Jefferson remained at the scene of the crime.
