HND Aircraft Engineering

Module title: Aircraft Propellers

Module Code: DP5N 34
Submission Date: 27 May 2011 (1600hrs)
Word Count: 1000 to 1500
Assessment 2: Propeller Construction and Maintenance

The pass mark for this assessment is 60%.

Introduction:

This assessment is a Coursework Assignment to be undertaken on an individual

basis and to be all your own work.

Requirement:

This second assessment event covering outcomes 4 and 5 is a case study

investigation in propeller construction and maintenance. You are required to produce
a report of approximately 1000 to 1500 words to identify and explain ALL of the
following:

 Types of materials used in propeller construction and why they are used
 Construction methods used to manufacture different parts of a propeller
 Why different types of propellers: fixed pitch, variable pitch and constant
speed propellers are constructed
 How and why a propeller is statically and dynamically balanced
 How and why propeller blade tracking is carried out
 Types of propeller blade damage: delamination, corrosion, rust, erosion, and
fatigue
 Propeller treatment and repair schemes
 Why there are rules and limitations for propeller engine running
 How and why propeller preservation and de-preservation is carried out

Candidates will need to show that they can evaluate the information to produce a
balanced report explaining the reasons for their conclusions. This assessment is to
be carried out under open book conditions and all submissions should be the
candidate’s own work.

Use suitable diagrams, tables and charts where appropriate. Your response may
include literature and web-based information, which must be referenced in
your reports as appropriate.

Put your student ID number on the front (title) page of your report and in the footer
of every page of your report. Submit your report as printed and bound copy.
Assessment Criteria for your report:

Overall Percentage Grade:

A: 80% grade 100%
B: 60% grade 80%
C: 40% grade 60%
D: 20% grade 40%
F: 00% grade 20%

General Overview:

A = Response is well structured, clear, concise, accurate, contains all key

points, and is within word limit

B = Response is passably structured and convincing, although tends to miss

some key points and/or includes less relevant ones and/or falls short of word
limit

C = Response is partly structured and/or reasonable, but is inadequate and

excludes some key points and/or falls short of word limit

D = Response is predominantly incorrect and/or excludes all key points and/or

falls short of word limit

F = Response is incorrect and/or no response at all
