SUBASE rocks
Kids Karnival
By MC1(AW) Peter D. Blair

GROTON. Conn. – Both kids and adults could be seen running

from ride to ride during the Kids Karnival at the Naval Submarine
Base New London (SUBASE) Youth Center, May 6-8. The event,
sponsored by SUBASE Morale Welfare and Recreation, saw more
than 2,000 guests the opening weekend of May.
With more than 12 rides for children and adults, a great time
was surely had by all. Rides like the Tornado, the Sizzler, the Wild
Wind, and 1001 Nights, gave patrons the chance to have fun.
Cotton candy, balloon animals, hot dogs, and prizes, highlighted
to all that the Karnival was in town, as civilians and military mem-
bers enjoyed the festivities. And Mother Nature provided excellent
weather this year as only two quick passing rain showers intruded
on the otherwise perfect outing.
“The MWR Kids Karnival was a great opportunity for military
and civilian families to get out, enjoy the weather and get to know
their neighbors,” said SUBASE Executive Officer, Commander
Michael Pennington. “My five year-old son had the time of his
life.”
Patrons to the Karnival also had the chance to enjoy face paint-
ing, live entertainment and the SUBASE Fire Department’s Safety
house.
“The Karnival was awesome,” said Alex Gadow.” I had fun on
every ride, but 1001 Nights was my favorite.”
Besides the rides, patrons were able to play games like ring toss,
to win prizes, and once again the SUBASE MWR provided great
food for the event.
GROTON, Conn. – Children excitedly ride the circus themed train ride at the Naval Submarine Base New London (SUBASE) Kids Karnival. Even though some rides from previous years were not there this
year, like the horse merry-go-round and the roller coaster, children
at the Karnival didn’t seem to notice.
“I had a blast at this year’s Karnival,” said eight year old Joshua
Blair. “All the rides I went on were really cool, but the pirate ship
was my favorite.”
The next big event from the folks at MWR is SUBFEST, which
will return to SUBASE in July, and once again will be open to the

s
general public.
