What We Do
This Is H.O.W. is a five year old, 501(c)3 organization devoted to the needs of trans people in the Valley of the Sun. All the needs, and all the trans people. We are all trans all the time, and we are recognized by organizations throughout the Valley as the leading experts in trans related issues and services. Our mission is deceptively simple The mission of This Is H.O.W. is to create opportunities and environments that empower transgender people to recover, to succeed in accomplishing goals, to reconnect with themselves and others, and strive for a purpose in life, making them healthy, vibrant and whole. Our motto is life made better, which represents the sum of our goals for everyone we work with. Our basic philosophy holds that the process of transition ² which is going from point A to whatever point is best for the individual ² is a crisis period in an individual¶s life. This is most readily summed up by the oft heard phrase ³finding one¶s self´. That is what This Is H.O.W. does .
Why We Do It
Trans individuals suffer from tremendous social stigma and discrimination. Recently, a report has demonstrated that trans individuals are tremendously impacted by the way society at large treats them. From being evicted for being trans to being fired or denied a job for being trans, the impact of such has led to a large percentage of the trans community existing in an underground economy or subsisting on government assistance. Trans individuals are nearly four times more likely to live in extreme poverty than the average individual. Trans people are multiple times more likely to commit suicide than the general population. Trans people have a rate of substance abuse five to twelve times higher than the general population. And all of these things are due to the pressure of a society that chooses to deny them medical care they are in desperate need of. Combined with this, the process of transition puts trans people into what is clinically known as a crisis period in their lives, which can have negative impact on their ability to function in society. With a success rate of over 60%, we¶ve developed tools and methods over the last five years that make us unique and experts on trans lives.
