Dear Sir, In spite of contributing an estimated £20.

6 billion annually to the economy, the Heritage sector is facing disproportionate cuts both locally and nationally. These cuts are dangerous because they directly affect the natural and historic environments which are our inheritance from the people who went before us and it is our responsibility to leave them in a fit state for all those who come after us. Once lost, our natural and historical resources and the cultural and economic value which they represent are gone forever. We therefore call on the Government to take three simple steps to safeguard the economic, cultural and social value of our past. 1. Any changes to the planning system must retain existing statutory protection for historic monuments and landscapes and must require local authorities to maintain up to date records of the natural and historic assets in their care. This foundation is essential to support, encourage and build local activity and partnerships which will ensure the natural and historic environment is both protected and promoted as a central part of the national and local economy. 2. The value of heritage to the economy should be recognised through careful investment in our museums, historic buildings and in related historical and environmental projects which enhance our communities as places to live, work, invest in and visit. 3. Public enthusiasm for our heritage is demonstrated through interest in spectacular finds such as the Staffordshire hoard, through membership of local and national societies and through participation in archaeological fieldwork and research. We call upon the government to ensure the continued funding of the Portable Antiquities Scheme, the Heritage Crime Initiative and the network of local archaeological curators and museums which exist to support and expand popular participation and engagement with the historic environment. We strongly believe that investment in the historic environment represents investment in the future through an understanding of our shared past. Such investment carries social and economic benefits which far exceed the modest cost.
