Remus Area Historical Society Museum news
The Remus Area Historical Society Museum, located at 324 S. Sheridan, is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. There are new additions to see. Join other Michigan counties in creating a Michigan Quilt Trail by purchasing a quilt block board (each tell a different story) one of six choices. We have several on sale now at the museum to hang on your barn, garage, or porch, available in 2’x2’ ($75) or 4’x 4’ size ($150). If you wish to order or reserve one of these quilt blocks contact Mary Simon (989) 561-2768. Another new project that RAHS is working on is the old Remus school photos being reproduced to place at the museum. If your class reunion has monies left over and would like to donate toward reproducing these in your class’ honor, contact the museum or Ed Walch at (989) 967-8125. Mark your calendar for the 6th Annual Tea at 2 p.m. on May 21, at the Museum, 324 S. Sheridan, in Remus. This year’s TEA will be hosted by the Mecosta-Remus Class of 1966. Tea tickets will be available after May 1st for $5 each but seating is limited. The TEA will focus on a garden theme so wear your favorite hat. Wanda Degen will be playing a dulcimer for our entertainment. Join us to sip tea, taste goodies, visit with friends and neighbors. Contact Char Lenon (989) 967-8153 to purchase tickets or reserve your seat or e-mail museum@winntel.com. If you’d like to display an antique quilt during Heritage Days, July 15 and 16, at the museum, please contact Sherry Marks (231) 250-2441. If you are interested in honoring our veterans in November, please contact Gary Cox (989) 5612848.

Is it safe to use the Internet in public places?
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Americans love going online. In fact, a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project and the Wi-Fi Alliance found that half of all adults go online with a laptop using a Wi-Fi connection while 40 percent use the Internet on mobile phones. Going online in public is convenient. Public Wi-Fi networks let us check e-mail, update social media profiles, and shop almost anywhere. But should we? How safe is the personal information we send over public networks? “Most people don’t realize that Wi-Fi signals are just radio waves, and anyone can ‘listen’ to what you’re sending just as easily as tuning a radio to the right station,” says Kent Lawson, Founder and CEO of Private Communications Corporation, a new online security technology company. That’s because the majority of Wi-Fi hotspots in airports, planes, coffee houses and other public places aren’t encrypted. That makes them havens for data thieves who’ve walked off with millions of Wi-Fi users’ credit card and Social Security numbers. There are some steps you can take to keep your information safe, says Lawson. If you’re using public computers, such as those at the library, don’t save anything on them. Make sure to close the browser and clear the cache when you’re done. In addition, limit your activities, because someone might have installed “key stroke tracking” software, which can watch everything you do, and capture your log-in information. If you’re using your own computer with public WiFi access, be even more careful. For example, be cautious about what you put in email messages. Credit card and social security numbers and home addresses should be avoided. Never bank or shop, unless the site is secure -- the web addresses should start with “https” not “http.” And turn off file sharing to prevent someone from gaining access to your hard drive. Or, for better peace of mind, you can install software that encrypts all data going into and out of your computer, such as PCC’s Private WiFi. This makes you invisible to hackers on any public network, anywhere in the world. While antivirus protects you from viruses and firewalls prevents unauthorized access to your in-

formation while you communicate, Private WiFi encrypts all the information you send. All three work in tandem to keep you safe. If you use your mobile phone to access the Internet, make sure you password protect it and install security software. You can also enroll in a back-up/wiping program, which backs-up your information and also can delete it if your phone is lost or stolen. These services are available from your phone’s manufacturer or your wireless provider. For more tips to keep your information safe over public Wi-Fi networks, visit www.privatewifi.com or www.private-i.com. In this digital age, our lives are increasingly lived online, so be sure to incorporate the right protections.

(Continued from last week) Memes or mind viruses often contaminate our thinking and are spread to others. 8. No one will help me. The right circumstances and the right people are already here and will show up on time. There are always great people looking for the opportunity that I have. 9. It has never been done before. I will attract all that I desire, here and now. I am creating something new and everyone loves it. 10. I am not strong enough. I have access to unlimited assistance. My strength comes from my connection to my Source of being. I am not my body. I have mental, emotional and spiritual strength to accomplish any task I desire. 11. I am not smart enough. I am a creation of the Divine mind. All is perfect and I am a genius in my own right. I am wise and exercise perfect timing. Everything I touch turns to gold. 12. I am too old (or not old enough). I am an infinite being. The age of my body has no bearing on what I do or who I am. My experience guides me and I learn easily to create a new future quickly. My youth and enthusiasm is my great asset. 13. The rules will not let me. I live my life according to divine rules. I function well within the rules of society, making adjustments for my circumstances. There is always more than one way to do things. 14. It is too big. I think only about what I can do now. By thinking small, I accomplish great things. I think in manageable pieces to accomplish great things. 15. I do not have the energy. I feel passionately about my life, and this passion fills me with excitement and energy. I am filled with vital energy every day. 16. It is my personal family history. I live in the present moment by being grateful for all my life experiences as a child. I release all events of the past and live fully in this present time. For as long as I can remember, I am in control of my body and my life. 17. I am too busy. As I unclutter my life, I free myself to answer the callings of the soul. I easily find the time for the beneficial things in my life. I accomplish tasks quickly, easily, accurately, and efficiently. 18. I am too afraid. I can accomplish anything I put my mind to, because I know that I am never alone. I release my past experiences and move forward with faith and enthusiasm, creating a new past that works better for me. Some of these may apply to you. There are many more. I hear them every day: Money doesn’t grow on trees, it’s the economy, its George Bush, it’s Obama, it’s the bank, I am too fat, I am disabled, I am sick, I have cancer, I am going to die anyway, I am not beautiful, I have a learning disability, I have ADD, I am too short, My husband (wife) is an alcoholic, I am bored, I don’t care, I was abused, my mother hated me, I came from a dysfunctional family, I did not finish school, and many more. For every one of these memes, I can show you a person who successfully overcame it and has moved on to a better life. Remember, if any human being has done something, anyone else can learn to do that also. When you find a meme that applies to you, read the healing affirmation or create your own. Then every single time you hear the old meme in your mind or from your mouth, cancel it, and plug in the new one. Within a short time you will be thinking and responding in a different way and life will be getting better. Put Your Health in Your Own Hands. Bob Huttinga PA-C. 989-352-6500.
