The Subject Matter

• The main figure in the artwork is the beautiful underwater coral reefs; although it showcases aquatic
biodiversity or life under the sea, the coral reefs initially caught my eyes and captured my interest.
Fishes and corals that are differently colored together with the diversity of the differing aquatic figures
such as the benthos and nekton, which also serve as the main figure, vividly contributes in pertaining the
vast biodiversity in salt water.

• Each figure in the painting combines in forming an allure and serene look from a diver’s perspective.
As an outcome of the artwork, when you look at the overall whole picture, one can see and feel the
peace of the tranquility that picture of the nature brings, but when it is seen in great detail or is zoomed
in an object, what you’re looking up becomes confusing like there are great and deep details on that
particular object and that there is something more in there than meets the eye. The pieces from her
Underwater Wilderness series benefit most from this set-up. To view them, one lithely weaves in and
out of strategically placed canvases, as though they were swimming, which is appropriate given its
subject matter: Abad turned to the prosperous marine life of her province and the underwater
landscapes she encountered during her many diving trips across the Philippines for inspiration .

The Materials

• Abad’s work is defined by color and transformation. She developed a unique style which she called
trap unto painting that joined painted canvas with hand-stitched textiles, shells, mirrors, and other
found objects. She also made prints, paper collages, and other works on bark cloth, glass, metal, and
ceramics.

• By looking at the different parts of the whole piece, one could easily say that she is indeed literate in
using those mediums in making her own form of art. The materials used really bring out the adequate
shin that the creator intended to do. Each figure in the painting was precisely done and even the parts
that are too small for the naked eyes to see are near to perfection. If Abad uses different mediums in
creating her art, our group believe that it would be never the same as it was before. In addition, the
targeted adequate shin that Abad made was to counterfeit perspective of a diver.

• If she use another medium she will not achieved the same effect because if you use another medium ,
it'll affects the texture or color of the work of art. Other times, the artist will choose a medium because
it helps the audience interpret the art in a specific way.

The Art Elements and Principles

• The distinct elements used in the work are colors, spaces, lines, and textures.

• These distinct elements are emphasized the kaleidoscopic life under the sea .

• Colors, which are bright and not monotonous, are used to make the figures look as real as it should. In
addition, it helps in giving life and setting the mood of the artwork.

• Spaces between each figure are present to show distinction and focus while lines are there for setting
boundaries, making outlines, and forming various intentions.

• It also indicates what the creatures will look like and in showing realism through art techniques like
shading or darkening of some areas.

• The unifying feature can be the background ocean that explains how different creatures can be one in
living.

• All in all, the Obra Maestra is really appealing to the eyes because of the good color choice and
combination and also appealing to the tactile ones due to visible textures .
