Edition 6, Volume 11

From the Vicar’s Desk
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We have heard it said, “The reason I do not go to church is that there are too many hypocrites in the church”. This accusation may be correct. But it’s like saying, “The reason I do not like hospitals is that there are sick people in hospitals”. We all are hypocrites in our own ways. But that’s only one side of the story. Most people in the church do not want it to be that way. And they earnestly strive to improve. Paul said it this way to the Romans: “I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do” (Romans 7:18-19). In the Church we find some of the best people in the community. Sometimes we also find disappointments. That’s why we have confession in the church and assurance that God forgives our sins. While at times we may grow tired of some of the criticism of the church even by those in the church, we can openly face up to our weakness, because we know we are saved by grace and not by being right or having the right answers. We continue to be saints and sinners, as Trueblood says, “Close contact the redeemed community makes us both weep and shout for joy”. Church is not perfect. But there is forgiveness, and because we have the assurance of forgiving love, let us not be too defensive when someone points out some of our weaknesses. When we have a common relationship in Christ, manipulation is replaced by modesty and a new relationship. Let me conclude with a quote: “We need not pay much attention to critics who cook stories and say malicious things and when they operate out of obvious hatred or when they have no alternatives to suggest. Mere diagnosis is too easy….The amazing truth is that God creates a community of saints out of sinful men and women. Those who are detached observers do not and cannot know this, but those who are really involved know it because they, themselves, are sinners and saints” (Elton Trueblood, The Incendiary Fellowship. New York: Harper, 1967a) With love and care, Mothy Achen
