For this third report I have to make, I went to the exhibition of Cosima von Bonin, actually the whole class went to that exhibition, but because I was sick those days, Icould not go with them, so I had to go for myself. I went to the exhibition on Saturday the eleventh of December 2010. I went a bit late because I could not go alone and my parents had a busy time. The only thing now to do is making the report, I need to hurry up because in about 3 days, the report has to be done.
The first I am going to do, is tell you a little bit about what Cosima von Bonin meant by this whole exhibition. The German artist Cosima von Bonin who is born in 1962, presented at Witte de With Center for contemporary art, an exhibition of her brand new works about the laziness an weariness phenomena. The title of the exhibition refers to the Italian expression "Dolce far niente," the "doing nothing". She definitely wanted to make an exhibition about this expression. For Cosima von Bonin is this exhibition at Witte de With just a little start, of better said, a little begin, she definitely will go to larger series of museum exhibitions all over Europe. With all the work Cosima von Bonin had to do, she did not had the feeling of the doing nothing, she had to work hard, for all the pieces of art she had to make.
With the exhibition of Cosima von Bonin, you sometimes can see, but sometimes you can·t see what is has to do with ¶the doing nothing·. If you can·t see what she means or what it has to do with that, you still have to figure out for yourself what it means, so technically you still have to think and that is not doing nothing, so I think that the exhibition has two ways to watch at it. When I went to the Witte de With I did not exactly knew what I could aspect and how the exhibition should look like, I did saw some pictures on the internet so I recognized some of the pieces of art from the pictures I saw on the internet . I knew I was going to watch to an exhibition of the artist Cosima von Bonin, but I did not knew anything further and I also did not knew why she made this types ofart and where it was standing for.
The exhibition of Cosima von Bonin is exposés in a building on the street Witte de With in the centre of Rotterdam. The exhibition is not really a museum, it is in a centre of contemporary art. Every time there is a new exhibition so it is not a museum. In the centre of contemporary art is new exhibition showed after a short period of time so it is not a museum because in a museum there is always the same to look at. The date of the exhibition is from the tenth of October till the ninth of January 2010. I went on the eleventh of December together with my dad, actually I had to go together with my class, they went earlier but I was ill so I could not go with my class. The location I already told you a couple of times., it was the Centre of contemporary art in the street Witte de With. The address is Witte de Withstraat 50, and the postal code is 3012 BR in Rotterdam.
the centre of contermorary art.
When I went to the exhibition it was quiet still, there was no one in the centre of contemporary art, me and my dad were the first two visitors. I was in the centre of contemporary art around eleven o·clock and we went back home aroun a half past twelve. d The centre of contemporary art was not always what is now, the building used to be an elementary school, but the school was not used anymore, because the elementary school got a new location. So the building was empty and that is how the centre of contemporary art got there.
The centre of contemporary art is a quit big building. When you enter the building you walk into a big hall with two big doors. When you walk through the doors, you walk into another hall where the ticket boxes are. In that same hall, there is a place where you can hang up your coat and where you canput you bags in a locker to keep them safe. The building has three floors and theexhibition of Cosima von Bonin was on the second and the third floor. To go to the next floor you can use the stairs or you can use the elevator. At every passage of the stairs there is a toilet.
With the exhibition of Cosima von Bonin I did not really knew where it was going about, I did not knew what to expect, and I did not knew what her meaning was with this exhibition. Later on I started to look for some information about the exhibition of Cosima von Bonin. I found some information so I would know what to expect from the exhibition and I did understand it more than I did before. The exhibition is about The German artist Cosima von Bonin who is born in 1962, she presented at Witte de With Center for contemporary art, an exhibition of her bran new d works about the laziness an weariness phenomena. The title of the exhibition refers to the Italian expression "Dolce far niente," the "doing nothing". The exhibition is at two floors, on the second and the third floor. At all floors there are for corners and two halls, well that is how I see the preparation. In all the corners and all the halls are the pieces of art very well drawn. It is not too busy and you can see everything very clearly. All the things do not stand very closely to each other, there is a lot of walking space between the pieces of art. You have a clear overview over all the art pieces. The organizers used a lot of all different things to organize all the art pieces. Some things are on the ceiling other pieces of art are hanging on the wall and others are standing.
Facility of pieces of art.
There is also a platform which is turning around with some different pieces of art. The organizers used a lot of different ways of presenting the pieces of art, there were a lot of ways I had never seen before, I thought it was very funny to watch at all those different methods of presenting the art. I thought that the most interesting way to present the pieces of art is the way of the turning platforms. The way how the organizers constructed the facility of the pieces of art, is very the same. Every floor is divided into four pieces and to every pieces are two halls which reach all the four pieces. The four pieces are actually four squares. In every square is in the middle a piece of art and almost on every wall in that square, so on four walls, hangs something that is made out of cloths. Some kind of tapestries. The routing of the facility is not really one route. You can walk through the pieces of art in every way you want. You can walk to every room you want, to every floor you want, there is not a typical rout you need to follow, you can go anywhere that you want to go to. And if you want to go back to some piece of art you can walk back to it to watch it again.
A part I want to talk about is the contents. About the content of the exhibition etc. I already answered the question about where the exhibition is about. The exhibition is about The German artist Cosima von Bonin who is born in 1962, she presented at Witte de With Center for contemporary art, an exhibition of her brand new works about the laziness an weariness phenomena. The title of the exhibition refers to the Italian expression "Dolce far niente," the "doing nothing". I think that you can find the name or the meaning of the exhibition back in all the pieces of art. The name of the exhibition means the doing nothing. In some pieces of art you can see this title back. One example I will mention is in one of the pieces of art is an rabbit who is leaning against a little tree hut with a headphone on his ears. On the little tree hut hangs a note with; if you want to hear what the Beardsley sloth rabbit is listening to, you·re very welcome to use the headphones. There hang two headphones on the little tree hut but in the CD player are only two plugs and on both headphones you heat music, so the rabbit is not listening to any music, he is doing nothing. All the pictures next here, is the whole story about the rabbit with the headphones. From the little paper with the instructions to the two headphones, to th rabbit e with the headphone, to only the two headphones in the plug.
I think that the main reason of the organizers to organize the exhibition this way is that now the exhibition is not too busy, you can look around without getting disturbed by the other pieces of art. You can look at the pieces of art very easily and when you want to look at something else, you can look at it by yourself, you don·t have to get disturbedby the other pieces of art. All other art pieces don·t have to get the attention from you so you are going to look to that piece. The organization is very quiet and very calm. The preparation has nothing to do with the function of the paintings, well that is actually what I think. The only thing that it could be, is that all the paintings are very busy from their self so that could be the reason I can think of why the preparation is in this way.
The order of the pieces of art is not very clear. All the different pieces of art are standing right through each other. There is not an order that the organizers keep with placing all the different pieces of art.
At every piece of art stands something written on the wall about the piece of art. You get information at every piece of art, there were also three movies about different pieces of art, I thought you got enough information about all the art. During I was watching at all the pieces of art, a man came to me with some paper, he gave it to me and he said;· here you have a pape with all the information about every piece of art, r and the two maps of the two floors with the exhibition, on that maps you can see where every piece of art stands.· I like the way that the organizers give you the information you need to know about the different pieces of art, but I think that they could give some more, or a better explanation about the art pieces. Some explanation I did not understand perfectly. But most if the time, they gave you enough information about the pieces of art. I think that the intention of this exhibition is very clearly, well for me it is. The title of the exhibition refers to the Italian expression "Dolce far niente," the "doing nothing." And I think that the function of this exhibition is clear, because the whole exhibition is about things of being lazy and doing nothing. All the pieces of art show how they do nothing like the rabbit who is leaning against that little tree hut, or the rabbit who is lying on the platform which is slowly spinning around .
Lying, spinning rabbit.
When I was on my way to the exhibition about the centre of contemporary art, I did knew a bit what I could expect. That was because I did a little bit research about the whole exhibition. If I did not do that research I would not know anything about the exhibition, now I did, a little bit. I thought that I got some laziness to see, that was a bit right but the rest was a bit different. How I thought about the exhibition was a bit different than what I saw. I did saw some pictures of the pieces of art, but it was not very the same as what I thought the exhibition would be.
