The Festival, which draws between 30 and 40 thousand guests per year to the sleepy northern Kent County community each October, will need to urgently rework budgets, events and, as recommended by the City Manager, seek privatized services for security and public works. The cost is estimated at approximately $7,600. Festival Board President Michele Andres is concerned about the timing and

City drops bottom from Red Flannels
Festival falls victim to state financial crisis
CEDAR SPRINGS — In a letter dated May 13, city manager Christine Burns communicated the recently adopted City Budget plans to eliminate all city services (police and public works employee wages, fuel for the antique fire engine, street sweeping and equipment rental) for the Red Flannel Festival. At a subsequent meeting on May 17, with Mayor Charlie Watson, Mayor Pro Tem Christine Fahl and City Finance Director Linda Lehman explained the state budget cuts in revenue sharing causing the recommendation from city staff to propose eliminating support to the 15th oldest festival in Michigan. Like most communities in Michigan, Cedar Springs has cut staff, benefits, health insurance and services historically provided for citizens such as monthly significant impact of the cuts, as the Festival is only 4 months away. “Our budget was finalized in February, we’ve already distributed our sponsor packets, and contracted with vendors.” Andres also noted that several events may need to be cut from the 2011 Festival, which has experienced phenomenal growth the past nine years. Final decisions will be made at an emergency Red Flannel Festival Board meeting on Tuesday, May 31.

Pre-schoolers hold annual St. Jude’s Bike-a-thon
To raise awareness and funds for St. Jude’s Research Hospital, pre-schoolers at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Sand Lake held a bike-a-thon on Friday, April 29. Nineteen total children, from ages 2 to 4, took part in the 26th annual bike-a-thon, which has been done in memory of Jennifer Kowalczyk, daughter of Mike and Sue Kowalczyk, who passed away from Burkett’s Lymphoma at the age of 12, on March 30, 1984, and was a sixth-grade student at Tri County Middle School. Youngsters on their bikes, tricycles, big wheelers and strollers, had milk cartons tied to their handlebars, and after one time around the track, a penny was dropped into their cartons.

Rosie’s Ice Cream & More plans to help library ‘grow’
SANE LAKE — Rosie’s Ice Cream and More is partnering with the Sand Lake/Nelson Township Library in an effort to help the library “grow” at the Library Plant Sale & Auction on Saturday, June 11th. Rosie’s will donate 10 percent of all sales from their business location. Rosie’s will also provide a lunch at the sale and donate 100 percent of those sales to the library. Co-owners Kathy Ortiz, Craig Moore, and Manager Laura Grice are all big library supporters. “We hope everyone comes out to support the library that day,” says Ortiz. “Reading is so important. We hope people will enjoy a treat from Rosie’s while helping the Library.” Moore shares Ortiz’s enthusiasm. “This gift is more than a percentage of sales. The gift of literacy is a gift to everyone. We’re honored to be a part of this community and support these efforts.” Rosie’s is located at 34 East Lake Street in Sand Lake and offers a variety of lunch/dinner items and wonderful ice cream treats. Their newest item, an ice cream cookie sandwich, is a taste-bud delight! The plant sale will be at the Sand Lake/Nelson Twp Library, rain or shine, and starts at 9:00 am. The plant auction begins at 2 pm. All proceeds benefit the Library to meet the “growing’ needs for programs, resources, books and operations. The Friends of the Sand Lake/Nelson Township library is a non-profit organization that helps the library raise funds for special projects and services. New members are always welcome and can join by completing an application in the library. The library hosts a variety of programs for adults and children throughout the summer and will kick off a summer reading program for youth in June. All children/young adults are invited to participate.

Committee seeks quilts for show
n Third Quilters Glory Quilt Show is set for June 11 and 12
BIG RAPIDS — Alice Bandstra has been making quilts for more than 30 years. A resurgence in quilting during the 1976 U.S. bicentennial celebration piqued her interest in the hobby. Since then she has crafted countless quilts, that have been given to friends and family and displayed others around her Big Rapids home. “I had tried some other kids of sewing and crafts,” Bandstra said. “But quilting interested me because of the workmanship that goes along with it.” To get others interested in quilting, Bandstra chairs the committee that organizes an event for quilters from Mecosta County and beyond to display their works and share ideas and techniques with other enthusiasts. The Quilters Glory Quilt Show — which is held every two years — will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 11 and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 12. Quilts will be displayed at Big Rapids Middle School and the Old Jail. Admission is $5, which is good for both days at both locations. Numerous vendors also will be displaying quilts, patterns and supplies available for purchase. Quilters can register through May 1 to display their creations at the show. Entry forms are available at Artworks and online at www.artworksinbigrapids. com. “Quilting is a very popular craft that has developed into more of an art form,” Bandstra said. “We thought it would be fun to start a quilt show in Big Rapids.” Organizer Phyllis Jacobs expects this year’s show to be the largest to date. More than 150 quilted items were displayed at the first show in 2007, with about 250 people in attendance. Two years later, more than 210 quilted items were displayed and attendance was doubled. “The object of the event is for quilters to display what they’ve been working on,” Jacobs said. Awards will be presented for the top quilts of different sizes, including king/queen, full/twin, wall-hanging or crib sized, and other quilted items. A “Best of Show” award also will be presented, with the winner receiving a stay at the Inn at the Rustic Gate. Vendor and author, Debra Henniger, of the Chicago area, will display quilts she’s made and lecture on her book, “Hobo Quilts.” The book shows historic photos and letters dating back to the 1930s. The quilting show also will feature the Ladies of the Library Group, of Midland, who will discuss and demonstrate an appliqué technique that has become the group’s specialty. For more information about the quilting show, contact Phyllis Jacobs at (231) 796-0202.

Firstbank would like to thank everyone who participated in our 2011 Photography Contest. Over 200 photos were submitted making the contest hugely successful. We were honored to provide local photographers with the means to showcase their talent. We would like to recognize our winners, as determined by popular vote: 1st Place — Western Rider — taken by Adria Clark, 2nd Place — Butterfly Surprise - taken by Melody Almy, and 3rd Place — Fireman’s Glow - taken by Michelle Thumas. If you would like to see the winning photos in person, they will continue to be displayed at the branch throughout the month of May.

scholarship to a Tri-County senior who excels in math and science and will be pursuing a four year degree. The Montcalm Panhandle Chamber of Commerce also recently moved assets to the Community Fund for its annual award to a senior student that is pursing a business degree and attended high school in the Panhandle District. Our newest fund is just getting started — the Kyle Boss Memorial Aviation Scholarship Fund. Kyle, a 2004 graduate who spent his high school years at both Lakeview High School and Tri-County High School lost his life in 2007 while in crop dusting school. The scholarship associated with this fund will be for a Tri-County or Lakeview senior who wants to further their education in aviation or with aviation as a key component. In total, all funds associated with the Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund are now approaching $130,000. Pictured here are a number of people and organizations that have supported the Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund and that have been grant recipients in years past. Prior beneficiaries include the libraries in Howard City and Sand Lake, Winfield & Maple Valley Townships, Sand Lake & MacNaughton Elementary Schools, Ensley Park, the Lions Club, the Tri-County Sports Boosters, and Stillwaters Counseling Ministry. Special thanks go out to

Alison Barberi and her staff at the Greenville Area Community Foundation for administrative support and Frank Zamarripa and the staff of Latitudes Restaurant for hosting the annual dinner. Support from all of the businesses who sponsor that dinner is greatly appreciated as well. The funds directors also thank all the faithful donors who are helping to build the legacy of the Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund. The fund typically gives out approximately 5 percent of its general fund assets in grant awards each year (including scholarships) and has given out more than $13,000 in grants from its general fund since inception. Based on exceeding the $100,000 mark in its general fund, approximately $5,000 in grant awards are anticipated in upcoming years. The amounts given annually will increase as the fund continues to grow. The request for grant application for the current year will be available in a few weeks with award announcements expected in September. Donations to the Montcalm Panhandle Community Fund (which have favorable federal and state tax benefits) may be made to PO Box 596, Howard City, MI 49329. Questions on how you may help to build on the legacy this fund creates for the community may be directed to Fred C. Plath at (231) 9376758 or Rich Pease at (231) 937-4141.

Mayor Charlie Watson expressed his personal attachment to the cuts, “I’ve lived in this community all my life. My father chaired the parade for three years. I love this community and the Festival. This decision is painful for all of us.” “As an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit, all volunteer organization, we have hundreds of passionate volunteers, a generous donor base, a supportive business and non-profit community and strong, committed leadership in the Festival Board of Directors. We fully expect, despite this tremendous blow, the love, pride and support of the community will keep our rich tradition alive. There will be a Red Flannel Festival in Cedar Springs Oct. 1. It just may be a few sizes smaller,” said Andres. About Cedar Springs: Cedar Springs is located just 20 minutes north of Michigan’s second largest city, Grand Rapids. Situated in northern Kent County, Cedar Springs covers about 1.3 square miles and has a population of 3,112 based on the 2000 census. The community was named for the fine springs bordered by a grove of Cedar trees. Less than a mile from US 131, Cedar Springs provides easy access to the cultural amenities of the greater Grand Rapids area. Cedar Springs is an attractive community with tree-lined streets and a varied housing base. About Red Flannel Festival, Inc.: The Red Flannel Festival is held the last weekend in September and the first weekend in October, attracting between 30- to 40,000 visitors. The first “RED FLANNEL DAY” was held in the fall of 1939.

Congratulations Graduates!

There will be a blood drive at the middle school on June 2nd

This summer we are pleased to announce the opening of Tri County Summer Latchkey Childcare and Tutoring Program. The program will be held at MacNaughton Elementary School in Howard City beginning June 13 through August 12 for any Tri County students entering K-5th grade for the 2011 school year. If you would like additional information please email the Latchkey Director at latchkey@ tricountyschools.com

The next visit you take to the high school you’ll notice the 10 x 32 foot sign on the outside of the building. It reads, “TCHS Home of the Vikings.” The sign is made of aluminum sheets and is mounted above the cafeteria. A special coating will protect it from Michigan’s weather. Last Fall, it was brought to Principal Mabie’s attention that there was no building sign, creating confusion for visitors. The idea to have the students be a part of this was a staff decision. The design contest was issued to the students and it was Victoria Simcoe, a senior from second trimester Photoshop whose artwork was chosen. Victory Sign and Graphics, LLC was the company who used the design to create the sign. The sign was paid for from pop can machine money.

Applications are now available for the 2011- 2012 school year. The Tri County Preschool program is grant funded and is offered FREE for students who meet eligibility requirements. To be eligible, a family must be identified as having two “risk-factors.” These risk factors are determined based on the state Great Start Readiness Program criteria. Families who have children that are four years old or will turn four years old by December 1, 2011 are welcome to apply. Applications are available at MacNaughton Elementary, Sand Lake Elementary, and the Tri County Administrative Office. Applications will be accepted anytime since enrollment is determined on eligibility factors, however, priority of session time will be given to those whose applications are received by May 31. Please contact Shannon Higgins at (231) 937-4380 or at shiggins@ tricountyschools.com for more information.

Not only do you see student artwork on the outside of the high school, but take a journey into the office and you’ll see 200 individual pieces of artwork, hooked together to form a beautiful mural. The mural is made of 200 clear plastic cd cases, each containing a photo or graphic artwork. It was created from a combined effort of students in; Yearbook, Photoshop, Graphic Arts (Illustrator), and Art classes. The words, “We are TC,” are in the center of the mural. NHS students labored long hours to put the mural together. Each cd has Velcro adhered to it to fit to the wall. The plan is to update the photos each year. Teacher Kristine Dollberg took two ideas she had seen in a book and combined them to create the mural. She was originally going to do this project in her classroom, but Connie Butler, high school administrative assistant, convinced her to go big and fill the large wall in the office for all to see — and what a wonderful sight it is!

Osteoporosis – Brittle bones
My good friend and colleague, Dr. Haverbush, has written about osteoporosis in his column, so I decided to give the natural health side of this subject. Osteoporosis is a serious health issue that causes lots of suffering and may compromise one’s overall health leading to death earlier than expected. It has been documented that people who break their hips from osteoporosis usually begin to have other serious health problems soon after that event. The current traditional medical treatment recommends use of Fosmax, Actonel, and Boniva. The unfortunate part of this treatment is that it may cause a serious bone condition called osteonecrosis. This means dead bone. These medications work by replacing part of the bone with an inert material which delays the break down of bone thereby slowing osteoporosis (It does not build new bone). The problem is this inert (dead) material will make the bones more brittle over time. The worse news is that it stays in the bone for 18 months up to 10 years. Natural treatment for osteoporosis must included exercise. I once saw a 14 year old boy with osteoporosis in his leg after just six weeks of no walking when he broke his leg. Living bone needs stimulation from walking. Elimination of acid-producing foods (pork, pop, sugar, oranges, dairy products, potatoes, and tomatoes) is a must if you are facing osteoporosis. An interesting statistic is that the three countries with the highest milk consumption (USA, Australia, and Sweden) also have the highest osteoporosis rates. Humm. Pasteurizing and homogenizing milk causes the production of Xanthane Oxidase. This is a highly acidic enzyme not normally found in raw milk and it has to be buffered or neutralized by calcium taken from our bones. Calcium citrate, 500 mg with Magnesium 250 mg, three times per day gives adequate absorbable calcium. Vitamin D3, 2000-4000 units per day, is needed for healthy bone. There are many skeletal support products on the market for additional minerals. Bio-plasma is a combination of 12 Cell Salts, all of which support structural tissues. Homeopathic Symphytum 30 C, one per week, will help heal any microfractures that are occurring. Homeopathic Calcerea Carbonicum 6C with Herbal Hydrangea will reduce bone spurs and enhance the deposition of calcium into the bone. All of these things support the natural production of bone and none interfere with normal physiology of bone like the prescription medication. The natural approach does not work for everyone, but we are now seeing repeat bone scans after two years of natural treatment showing 5% to 29% improvement in the bone density using DEXA scans. So if you do not have this problem yet, do the preventive measures. If you do have Osteopenia or Osteoporosis you may want to try the natural approach alone or with your prescription medications.
