You are invited to an Oldies but Goodies Picnic
Takoma Park teens are dressing in style to take the music back to the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s, and enthusiastically welcome Takoma Park seniors to an ―Oldies but Goodies‖ picnic. Seniors will be treated to the music of famous singers and musical groups such as Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Chubby Checkers, Little Richard, the Beach Boys, the Beatles, the Supremes and many others. The teens will provide refreshments, party activities, entertainment and dances from the 50’s to the 70’s. So put on your dancing shoes and join us for a blast from the past. Have you been watching other people win games on television over the years and wish you could play to win? Now is your chance. Paula and Faye of the Recreation Department will act as hosts for our interpretation of popular television game shows such as The Price Is Right, Let’s Make a Deal, Family Feud, Name That Tune and other favorites. The Silver Foxes Newsletter is now on the Takoma Park Recreation web site. All you need to do is click on the ―Seniors‖ icon and bring up the current newsletter. Not only is this more eco -friendly and economical, but you don’t have to wait for the mail. A limited mailing list will still be available for those who do not have computer access. Copies of the newsletter will continue to be hand delivered to the senior housing buildings in Takoma Park. Miniature Golf Mini Trip
A round of miniature golf is very enjoyable exercise! Join us for an entertaining round of miniature golf at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Bohrer Park’s fun and ―challenging‖ miniature golf course is set in a beautifully landscaped park with waterfalls, streams and ponds. Walking/Standing/ Active. Warm weather: wear sunscreen, dress appropriately for comfort. Meet at Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue. Transportation is provided at no cost for seniors. Pick up at Franklin Apartments, Mapleview Apartments, and Victory Tower only. Wednesday June 29, 2011 10 AM – 1:00 PM $5 senior rate: per person. Bring on 6/21/11. Registration is required. Square Dancing with Betsy Taylor—summer session
Square dancing is part of American culture...it is a form of dancing that requires team work and cooperation...and also produces laughter, and friendship as well as physical and mental health benefits from exercise,‖ says Betsy Taylor. Join Ms. Taylor on Thursday mornings in the Azalea Room to learn the basics of Square Dancing or to enhance your existing skills. The summer, six weeks, Session I begins June 2, 2011. Choose the class that’s right for you, beginners or more advanced. Singles and couples are welcome. See page 4 for details.

Takoma Park senior citizens are invited to help test the voting system to be used for the November 2011 election. Your participation will help to identify strengths and weaknesses of the voter interface. During these hours, we will have the electronic voter interface and the absentee voting system available for anyone to test. After you have tried the systems, join us for refreshments and let us know what you think. Is the system easy to use? What do you think could be improved? ―Bone Builders‖ consists of three parts: balance exercises, weight training and discussion concerning diet, safety and exercise. This program, in partnership with Montgomery County, uses trained RSVP volunteers supervised by a certified trainer. Registration is required. Dance Studio. No cost.

Gentle Yoga
Alternate Fridays, Summer Session June 3, 17 12:00—1:00 p.m.
Carol Mermey, RYT, will introduce you to the ways yoga can help you increase flexibility, strength, and balance, using a series of seated and standing poses. Learn breathing and relaxation techniques. Beginners and experienced students welcome, work at your own level. You must have a yoga mat, bring it to class. Registration required. Dance Studio. Line Dance Exercise

Betsy Taylor instructs and calls fun and energetic square dancing routines. Come and learn the basics of Square Dance or add on to your square dancing skills. Seniors, it’s Summer! Pool Information/Hours
Piney Branch Swimming Pool (7510 Maple Ave., inside Piney Branch School) is open: Early Bird Swim: Monday—Friday ……. 6:30—8:30 AM Regular Swim: Monday-Thursday …… 4—9 PM (must be out of the pool by 9 PM). Sunday hours…………. 8 AM—5 PM Hours and classes subject to change. Check the pool website: www.acsgw.org/pool.htm Senior rates are $3.50 per swim (or a pass for $35.00—12 swims). The pool offers reduced cost passes for low income seniors. During pool hours, call (301) 891-8017. The lifeguards will answer this line, unless they are out on the deck, or if the pool has an unscheduled closure. The Senior Room is located on the second floor of the Takoma Park Community Center between the Library and the Computer Center. The Senior Room is a drop-in facility, and is open to all people ages 55 and older. Classes are held at various times throughout the week. Computers are available in the room for Senior use only. Computer assistance is available in room ―A‖ only. Please sign the log-in book upon entering the Senior Room. Food and drinks are not permitted in the Senior room except for City of Takoma Park events.
