Ventilation for Blower Room

1.1 Design Basis

The ventilation of blower room is designed to maintain the temperature rice of blowers within
acceptable limits as recommended by International Electrical Commission (IEC).

All blower motors, installed within the blower room are assumed to be IC41 motors with class F
insulation.

Total energy loss , contributed for emission of heat is (10x58) 580 KW

1.2 System Design.

The ventilating system is designed to provide clean, fresh air from outdoors and directed toward
blowers to cool its motors and thereafter exhaust this warm air from within the building.

The temperature limits of motor windings, recommended by IEC are as follows.

(i). Recommended maximum temperature to limit premature thermal ageing of insulation class F is
155 oC.

(ii). Maximum temperature rise recommended for class F motor winding is 100 oC.

Accordingly a temperature rise of 40oC is considered as the maximum allowable for the safe
operation of the blower motor since the life of motor winding is shortened when operating at a
constantly high temperature.

1.3 Ventilation Air Requirements:

Outdoor air, at ambient temperature, will be provided at a rate that will remove heat build-up from
the electric motor so as to maintain the winding temperature not more than 40oC above ambient.

Heat gain from solar radiation, lighting and people within the building are small compared to the
heat emission by the blowers and are ignored.

Let q1 m3/S be air flow rate required to remove the heat generated by blowers.

Taking the density of air as 1,2 kg/m3 the mass of air is 1,2q1 kg/S.

Taking specific heat at constant pressure and normal temperature as 1,0 kJ/kg, the heat required
to raise the temperature by 40oC is given by

W1 =1,2*q1*1,0*40 kJ = 48q1 kJ/S (1)

1 KW = 1 kJ/S

Heat generated by blowers = 580 kJ/S (2)

From equation (1) & (2)

48q1 = 580

q1 = 12,08 m3/S (3)

Since blowers are generating heat, it is recommended 15 air changes for the blower room.

Therefore volume of air = 15x volume of the building m3/hr

Air volume = 11,825 m3/S (4)

From equation (3) and (4), air flow of 12.08 m3/S should be consider for selection of air inlet fans.

No. of inlet fans = 10 Nos.

Air flow rate of a inlet fan = 1,21 m3/S at zero static pressure

Add 20% airflow as safety margin = 1,45 m3/S at zero static pressure

The warm air generated within the building has to be removed and the rate of extraction has to be
maintained at about 80% of the rate of supply, so as to maintain a positive pressure inside within
the building in order to prevent the infiltration of dust and outside air. Therefore required air
extraction rate is 80% of the supply.

Air extraction rate = 9,67 m3/S

Since the pressure loss in the extraction system is unknown, the required extraction rate is
enhanced by 10-15% and given as the extraction rate at zero static pressure.

No. of extraction fans = 4 Nos.

Air extraction rate = 11,12 m3/S

Capacity of extraction fan = 2,78 m3/S at zero static pressure

Add 20% airflow as safety margin = 3,34 m3/S at zero static pressure

All air flow rates given are the minimum required, by calculation and may be changed to the
nearest higher value based on models available in the market.

Check for temperature increment at the room

Assumed motor efficiency = 95%

Energy loss as heat = 29 kJ/S (KW)

Air changes per hr = 15,33

o
Increase in ambient temperature due to blower operation = 2,00 C
