In this report the author has looked at a few aspects that effect the outcome of the deign such as the riders seated position.Summary The motorcycle industry has evolved over the last decade and many consumers are using the motorbikes for commuter purposes as well as for enjoyment on weekends and holidays. Therefore manufactures have designed motorbikes for this segment of the markets and these motorcycles are called dual sport bikes. the seat and the controls. In order for these factors to be achieved there has to be a lot of consideration taken in the design stage of these bikes. powerful. These motorbikes have to be comfortable. economical and have the capacity to carry a lot of luggage. 2 .

BMW .1. harder suspension to cross harsh terrain. Figure 1. A picture of a BMW duel sport can be seen below in figure 1. Many motorcycle enthusiasts would use the motorbikes on weekend in order to escape the city life and ride in the country but there motorbike was not really built for this purpose. As this trend took off the motorcycle manufactures such as Honda.1 Background Society as a whole seems to have more time on there hands to enjoy out door activities and weekend get aways. Yamaha. These motorcycles are called enduro or dual sport bikes. All these early versions of dual sport bikes where based on road motorbikes and where modified to hold more baggage. Suzuki and many others made motorbikes that were specifically designed to be used on the road during the week but on the weekend and holidays they could be driven in the country. A BMW dual sport motorcycle. Introduction 1. 4 . larger fuel tanks in order to ride further and most important of all have a reliable engine. The motorcycle industry as a whole has seen this fact and so people are able to purchase motorcycles that are bespoke for these activities.

Design 3.1 Ergonomics of a dual sport motorcycle When designing a dual sport motorcycle one should take into account the desires that the rider will want the motorbike to posses then he should try make the best possible trade off between these factors.2. All dimensions are in mm 5 . Problem Statement Design the seat and control arrangements for a dual sport motorcycle. Then BMW has a 1200cc water cooled boxer engine that is very reliable and adequately powerful for any on road and off road endeavours. Below are some of the factors to take into account when designing a dual sport motorcycle Comfortable Seating Position Reliable and Powerful engine for road and off road use Durable suspension Long fuel range and fuel efficient engine Place to store luggage and cargo Powerful lighting Good brakes for safety. Below one cans see a schematic of some dimensions one should use when designing the motorcycle. 3.1 Seating Position Many of the dimensions use in this report are based on the BMW R1200GS dual sport motorcycle as this is widely seen as the market leader when it comes to the dual sport motorcycle market. BMW also has designed a full range of panniers that can be attached to the motorcycle to enable the rider to carry all there luggage on there travels. Ease of operation. 3. They have successfully been ridden around the world as well as countless times up and down the continent of Africa.

These dimensions allow the rider to sit comfortably when on the bike. The foot pegs should be rubber mounted to absorb any vibrations made by the engine as these can cause the rider to become tied and wary on a long trip.Handle Bars Pannier Fuel Seat Wind shield Light Engine 955 890 400 Foot Pegs Figure 2. The foot pegs should be 400mm off the ground while the handle bars should be around 955mm off the ground. It is accepted in the motorcycle industry when it comes to dual sport motorcycles that the rider should have a straight back or slightly leaning forward as opposed to it being slanted back with cruising models and extremely forward with sport bikes. The riders back is only leaning forward by 11° while his legs and knees are at a comfortable angle. The handle bars should be 470mm from the riders torso this ensures that he does not have to reach or extend his arms to get to them and make it easier for him to access all the controls 6 . This does become an issue when riding on road situations as the rider will then be buffeted by wind when riding at high speeds but the use of a wind visor will deflect most of the wind in these situations. This concept can be seen displayed in figure 3 below. Ergonomic dimensions on a dual sport As can be seen from the above schematic the seat should be about 890mm above the ground this ensures they the rider has a good sight of view while he is riding and is able to use his upper body weight and higher centre of gravity to manipulate the motorcycle in tricky off road sections.

This foam uses a combination of air and the foam to provide a comfortable seat.2 Seat One can also see form the above picture the seat is one of the most important factors when it comes to the motorcycle. The air compresses when the rider sits and then the foam is used to provide comfort and absorb any bumps. The seat should also be large enough to hold two passengers.Figure 3. On average the seat should be 700mm long by 350mm wide in order for it to accommodate two passengers 7 . It should be large enough and firm enough to accommodate the rider and his weight. All motor cycle manufactures use injected moulded. Seating position on dual sport motorcycle 3. open cell polyfoam suspension. The rider will improbably be seated for very long periods when he is riding so the sculpting of the seat ensures they the foam can absorb all the weight in the correct places but must be small in width to ensure that the rider’s legs hug the motorcycle.

8 . This are preferred when riding off road as branches. They should also be designed in a way that the rider can easily determine whether the switch is on or not. W e can also see from the above image the fuel tank is also sculpted to fit the rider’s legs and protect them form buffeting in the wind. This can be done by incorporating lights in the head display to show weather the controls are on or not. If it placed between 8° to 15° the display will be in the rider’s line of sight and he will only have to move his eyes in order to view the data. All vital controls such as Lights Indicators Starting and Kill Switch Should be mounted on the handle bars with toggle switches so they are easy to access. The speedometer and rev counter should be of a mechanical nature with a needle as they can easily by read without much concentration.3. Controls and instrument cluster of BMW dual sport The riders should also have adequate revue mirrors at his disposal as this is one of the major causes of motorcycle accidents. stones and other debris may hurt the rider and make him loose control. Figure 4. The head display should be mounted no lower than 15° from the straight sight vision of the eye socket as then the rider will physically have to lower his head to view his instruments. Figure 4 below shows the typical setup of controls of a bike of this nature. They should be designed that the leaves are a maximum of 90mm from the hand grips as any more than that the rider will have to stretch his fingers to reach the controls and this will become an inconvenience. The weather and the cold are the biggest effects the rider will have to overcome when travelling long distances. The rider’s hands should also be protected with plastics guards.2 Controls The controls of the motorcycle are the most important factors to a rider as he cannot loose concentrations in order to switch on a device while rising. The brake leaver should be placed on the right hand while the clutch lever is placed on the left hand.

5. Conclusions From all the information that is made available above it is the opinion of the author that if these simple concepts are followed and adhered to a dual sport motorcycle can be designed and manufactured that is both comfortable to the rider and useful on the city and country environment. 9 .
