Come and See

When Susan and I look into our back yard today, the reality is pretty stark. It is simply grass and fencing. So we often find ourselves reflecting on the beautiful landscaping we have achieved in other yards over the years and dreaming about what we can achieve in this yard. In short, we envision a landscaping plan that will include an expanded patio and a five year, evolutionary planting and development process that will involve lots of work and pleasure. Once John had baptized Jesus, witnessed the Holy Spirit come upon him, and recognized him as the Son of God, two of Johns disciples began

Rev. Dr. Jerry Black, Associate Minister

to follow Jesus. Noticing them, Jesus stopped and asked, What is it that you want? To this question, the two disciples replied, Rabbi (teacher), where are you staying? In other words, We want to go with you. So Jesus replied, Come and see. And they did. (John 1:29-39) In our table conversations over the past two weeks we have been affirming, as Paul suggested to the church at Philippi, that which in our life together is good and true; that which is commendable and right; that which is just and worthy of praise; that which is honorable and excellent (Philippians 4:8). Now we begin the process of interweaving these qualities into the fabric of our future. With the gifts we possess, we can start to dream. We can follow Jesus and see the possibilities for that which God is calling us to be and do. So, come and see.

Our Senior Minister, Rev. Chris Shorow, is currently on sabbatical. He began his sabbatical on May 20. It concludes on September 5, 2011. A sabbatical plan, including a list of job responsibilities and contact information, has been prepared and reviewed by the Personnel Committee, Chriss Pastoral Relations Committee, and the staff. Information from those plans has been included in a Sabbatical Guide which isavailable at our Welcome Center or online at www.fccedmond.org/sabbatical. The churchs office staff can help you get in touch with the appropriate contact person. Call (405) 341-3544 for assistance. To give us a small glimpse into his sabbatical experiences and the Shorow family travels, Chris will blog occassionally and post pictures at www.fccedmond.org/ chriscrossings.
