Sanctification
Review

Sanctification: Review
• Definitive Sanctification • Progressive Sanctification • Who will define each of these terms?

Sanctification: Review
• Definitive Sanctification is the once-for-all act of God that cleanses and purifies us from sin, which act is the product of our union with Christ in his life, death, burial, and resurrection. • What role does the believer play in his or her definitive sanctification?

Sanctification: Review
• Progressive Sanctification is the process in which we responsibly participate with God in becoming more and more holy throughout our Christian lives until our glorification. • What role does the believer play in his or her progressive sanctification?

Sanctification: Review
• Define the relationship between definitive sanctification and progressive sanctification.

Sanctification
The Means of Progressive Sanctification

The Means of Grace
• In addition to calling us to be responsible participants in our progressive sanctification, • The Lord has graciously provided the means by which we become more and more holy in time. • These are most commonly called ―the means of grace‖—they are the means by which we ―grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ‖ (2 Pet 3:18).

The Means of Grace
Preliminaries

The Means of Grace: Preliminaries
• Employing the means is essential for growth.
– Growth in grace (progressive sanctification) is our responsibility. – Without our responsible participation in the sanctification process we will not grow in grace. – The Lord has given us means for our growth in grace. – Thus it follows that without employing the means of grace we will not grow with respect to salvation.

The Means of Grace: Preliminaries
• Employing the means requires strenuous effort.
– 2 Pet 1:5-11: Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, selfcontrol, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

The Means of Grace: Preliminaries
• Employing the means requires strenuous effort over time.
– 2 Pet 1:8-11: For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. – There are no short cuts to spiritual growth; growth in grace is a ―brick oven‖ not a ―microwave oven‖ experience.

The Means of Grace: Preliminaries
• Employing the means requires reliance on God; especially on God the Holy Spirit.
– 1 Thess 5:23: Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. – Phil 1:6, 9-11: For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus….And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. – Eph 5:18: And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.
