Universitat de Barcelona (email@example.com) 1. Summary of relevant issues and research in Education and Training More than 55 research projects and thematic networks that address directly issues of Education and Training were supported under FP4 and FP5. In addition to individual projects, from 2001 until 2003 five project clusters were supported around themes of policy relevance. These clusters brought together groups of related projects in a way that drew out and consolidated key findings, produced thematic reviews, promoted synergies between projects and integration/cross-fertilisation of research results from individual projects.

Cluster 1. Education and Labour Market Change: The Dynamics of Education to Work Transitions in Europe Cluster 2. Education, equity and social exclusion Cluster 3. Monitoring and Evaluation of Research in Learning Innovations Cluster 4. Synergy between Practitioners' needs and opportunities, Research orientations and Decision Making on the usage of ICT in primary and secondary education Cluster 5. Towards the Learning Society: conclusions from FP4 and FP5 projects to shape European policies in education and training
In 2007 were published a series of eleven policy reviews on socio-economic sciences and humanities research. The policy review of education research funded under the 4th and 5th Framework Programmes has been carried out by Sally Power (Cardiff University, UK): Policy Synthesis of EU Reserarch Results, num. 4-Education. (ftp://ftp.cordis.europa.eu/pub/fp7/ssh/docs/ssh_pr_04_en.pdf) The review covers 28 selected projects, which completed their research between 1998 and 2006, covering all phases of education –from early childhood provision to the needs of adult learners. They include a variety of methods, sources and multi-scale options, including sociological, economic and pedagogical investigations. Sally Power (2007) identifies five broad policy themes: a) b) c) d) e) Modernising education systems Innovations in teaching and learning Addressing inequalities Education and employment European “convergence” and integration
There exists a strong correspondence between the five project clusters and the five themes analysed by Power. I think, both classification of themes and issues are also correlated with André, Malheiros & Abreu proposal: (a) Lifelong learning; b) Cities networking, info networkings, distant learning; c) Exclusion and inclusion through education systems; d) Ethnic minorities/immigrants education; e) The new contexts of higher education (“mass” he, new social responsibilities, …); f) Education new governance models 2. Gaps in knowledge: new learning needs and schools for future Maybe we can integrate the projects selected by André, Malheiros & Abreu, taking into account the prior reviews cited. After mixed this different “clusters” of knowledge, we can project five main themes from a scheme founded on “Cities and Social Cohesion” perspective: 1.- Lifelong Learning Societies & Cities: How can activate the “re-skilling” process in cities and regions? How can educational institutions better respond to lifelong learning? What’s the role of lifelong learning strategies in cities that are restructuring in front of globalization? Which are the internal and external coherence between formal and non-formal education in local contexts? 2.- Modernizing Education, Governance & Local Communities: How can regulate the education decentralization and devolution process in local contexts? How can develop scholar autonomy as a local empowerment process? How can improve the participation of families and civil society in local schools? What’s the role of teachers as public intellectuals in local communities? 3.- Urban Inequality, Education, & Employment: Why are education and training policies failing to secure sufficient levels of basic skills? Why and how continue the social reproduction of inequalities in our cities between social classes? Which are the results of priority areas schemes in poor-communities? How are the benefits of marketization process in local education contexts? Which are the relations between new forms of illiteracy, mass-popular culture and media? 4.- Urban Diversity, Education, & Social Inclusion: How national curriculum reflect the European citizenship? How are they reacting in front of cultural and capitalist globalization? How are the inclusive education in diversity between new generations, teachers and families? Which are the social conflicts around moral and religious education in multicultural cities? 5.- Urban Schools, Creativity & Learning Innovations for Future: How can schools improve their capacity for change and innovation? How can local schools be institutions of creativity, networking and civic cohesion? Which are the learning needs and gaps between “digital natives” and “digital immigrants” ? .,….
