Four Major Photojournalism Awards for Burma


Gold, Silver & Bronze in Photojournalism (Political) Gold in Photojournalism (People)
Documentary photographer, James Mackay, has won four awards for three separate pieces of work about Burma in the Photojournalism Category for professional photographers at this years Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3) Awards 2011. The Prix de la Photographie Paris (PX3) is one of the biggest and most important photography competitions in Europe. The jury selected 2011s winners from thousands of photography entries from over 85 countries and all winners can be viewed on the PX3 website www.px3.fr PX3 is juried by top international decision-makers in the photography industry and winning entries from each major category are exhibited in Paris Espace Dupon in June 2011. The winners are also published in the high-quality, full-color PX3 Annual Book, which is distributed to galleries, agencies, publishers and bookstores worldwide.

About the Winner: James Mackay is a freelance documentary photographer based in South East Asia and UK where he studied photography at Central St Martins College of Art & Design. His work specialises in documenting the ongoing political and humanitarian issues in Burma both inside the country, on its borders as well as amongst those now forced into exile. He is currently undertaking a number of long term documentary projects with and about Burmas political prisoners and Burmas human rights defenders & democracy activists. Aung San Suu Kyi: At Home With Burmas Hope GOLD Winner in Photojournalism (People) SILVER Winner in Photojournalism (Political) Burmas democracy icon, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, photographed in her home at 54 University Avenue, Rangoon just weeks after her release from house arrest in November 2010. She has spent more than 15 of the past 20 years under house arrest and since being freed has continued to fight for democracy and national reconciliation in Burma.

The Prison Without Bars GOLD Winner in Photojournalism (Political) From the refugee camps scattered along the border with Burma to the safe houses of Mae Sot to those who have been resettled to third countries, the daily lives of Burma's former political prisoners are documented as they continue their fight in the struggle to bring democracy to Burma as well as their own personal fight for freedom. This is Tun Lin Kyaw, a former bodyguard of Aung San Suu Kyi, who was jailed for three years in Insein prison.

Bo Kyi BRONZE Winner in Photojournalism (Political) Portrait of Bo Kyi, the joint secretary of the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) taken from Burmas Defiance, the long term documentary project both inside Burma as well as in exile, documenting dissidents and human rights defenders still leading the fight against the ruling military regime in spite of threats and harassment from the authorities in the quest to bring freedom to their country.
