FooTPrinT 1st ave to Venables The commercial Drive Festival is about fun for free and strengthening our community through creative use of public space. The Drivefest is 100% volunteer organized and produced. We commit hundreds of hours to this fest because we love this community. come out and enjoy your new public space, meet your neighbours and engage in our local culture.
THanK you to all the unnamed performers, supporters, helpers and volunteers who come together and work for free to create this festival. sPecial THanKs to bodie Macneill, charlie latimer, Julie Faye Fuss, Karen reed, lisa ackerman, Tanya otero, Debra rolfe, carla bergman, alex Dundas, Massa ito, chris bergman, Monika Whitney, craig ollenberger, carmen Mills, Kristy rowson, Jordan Myers, Terry sunderland, Paul chevreau, Timothy Wisdom, and cori yule.
For West end, email westendvol@gmail.com exTra-sPecial loVe for those who turn up at days end to help tear down and clean up.
car-Free Vancouver Day does not support busking (asking for money) at this event.
THe FesTiVal recoGnizes and appreciates the skills and dedication of our local artists. The reason we discourage busking is because, at this Festival, hundreds of performers and organizers voluntarily contribute their professional skills, plus thousands of hours of labour. We do this as a contribution to our community, on this one day, in the generous spirit of fun for free. sTreeT PerForMers will be wandering about the Festival, contributing their gifts For Free. Please give them your applause and adoration, but save your change for roving donationgatherers or Festival Fairies. your contribution will go to support further car-Free festivals. arTisTs are inViTeD to share their gifts at the Fest; we only ask that they be considerate and follow Fest guidelines. Performers must be mobile and unplugged, unless they receive clearance from Festival organizers. THanK you for playing with us!

Kitsilano is doing something different for Car Free Day. instead of closing off a major street, people throughout Kits are hosting individual block parties with their neighbours. This year 15 blocks have organised parties, and they are as individual as the people who pull them together. some have dancing, some have music, some have couches and chairsnand carpets in the middle of the street. all of them are a fun, relaxing chance to hang out with the people who live on your street. Want to host your own party in Kits next Car Free Day? its easier than you think! send us an email at kitsilano@carefreevancouver.org or phone Mel lehan at 604-7310599 and well help you get it going. live in another neighbourhood and want to have a block party? Please contact ross Moster at ross@villagevancouver.ca or visit Village Vancouver at www.villagevancouver.ca.

ThE GATEWAY PROGRAM is an estimated $10 billion dollar proposal that includes paving the new south Fraser Perimeter road freeway through bcs best farmland and over a 9000 year-old First nations burial site on the banks of the Fraser river. some parts of the Gateway freeway project are approaching completion, but we can still stop the south Fraser Freeway. RESIDENTS OF NEW WESTMINSTER just made a big step towards a better future by getting the north Fraser Perimeter road portion of Gateway cancelled. and in april/May, dozens blocked sFPr construction in north Delta for two weeks. There is more direct action to come. WE hAVE A ChOICE: continue spending $ billions on freeways which worsen our vulnerability to oil price shocks and increase global warming emissions, or shift to investing in a better future. currently, 35% of bcs global warming emissions come from automobiles, and transportation accounts for most of the oil burned in bc. our Provincial Government is required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 33% by 2020 under the bc climate action Plan. We must shift spending from freeway expansion to public transit and electric rail transportation to meet these commitments.

cars suck the life out of cities. They are responsible for the vast majority of violent deaths on our streets. They make our communities noisy, dangerous and polluted. They isolate neighbours and make it impossible for children to play safely. and globally, car emissions are a major contributor to global climate change. The good news is, ever-rising gasoline prices and the surge in global awareness are quickly changing our attitudes toward cars. suV sales are plummeting and bike sales are way, way up! city planners are creating pedestrian boulevards, bike paths, dense mixed-use developments, and new transit lines to service them. and smart businesses are learning that car-free streets mean more customers. look around you at this car-free street. you see children playing safely. you see people dancing and playing, mingling and sharing, buying and selling. you see citizen-initiated car-Free events, sanctioned and supported by the city. What you are seeing is the future of Vancouver and that is something worth celebrating!
carfree streets and shopping districts are proud features of all progressive cities. beijing, Jakarta, and bogata, now have major car-free days. Paris converts l a downtown freeway into a beach for almonth every Ma summer. Torontos Kensingtonook has pedestrian Market sbr sundays throughout the summer. and in new york, We Times square is now celebrating its second fully carfree anniversary - and ll people are loving it. the
