Foreword
During this quarter, Sabbath School students around the world will continue with the series of studies entitled This We Believe, for we have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history (General
Conference Daily Bulletin, January 29, 1893).

In the Great Commission given to His disciplesa mandate which echoes down to our dayChrist bids us to teach all things whatsoever He has commanded. These all things encompass many vital truths which provide great spiritual impetus in our walk with the Lord and are essential components of the present truth especially applicable in our day. The truths that have been substantiated by the manifest working of God are to stand fast. Let no one presume to move a pin or foundation stone from the structure. Those who attempt to undermine the pillars of our faith are among those of whom the Bible says that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils (1 Timothy 4:1). One step from the path in which God has ordained us to walk, places us where we are subject to the temptations of Satan. This is represented in the case of Adam and Eve. Outside of Gods way, we may be led to believe a lie. But angels of God will commune with those who obey His laws. Let mind and heart be united in following in the light that God has given. Keep soul and body pure and clean and holy. When we do those things that God has commanded in His word, angels of God will act as our teachers. Our happiness is dependent upon our living a righteous life.Bible Training School, March 1, 1915. We have a sacred message to bear to the world. The Third Angels Message is not a theory of mans inventing, a speculation of the imagination; but it is the solemn truth of God for these last days. It is the final warning to the perishing souls of men. It is not a system of truth simply to gratify and please the intellect; it means diligent and sacrificing labor to all who accept its holy teaching. The commandments of God and the testimony of Jesus must be brought to the attention of the world. The tidings of the coming of the Saviour must be proclaimed. The Judgment scenes must be portrayed before the unenlightened minds of men, and hearts must be aroused to realize the solemnity of the closing hours of probation, and prepare to meet their God.The Review and Herald, March 13, 1888. First Sabbath Offering

for a missionary and health center in Novi Sad, Serbia
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: We greet you with the words of the apostle Paul, Let brotherly love continue (Hebrews 13:1). One of the first European territories in in which the Seventh Day Adventist Reform Movement took its roots has been the northern, great plain region of Serbia, known as Vojvodina. In Novi Sad, the capital of that province, brothers and sisters have assembled from the very beginning; the first chapel in that city, however, was established in the 1960s in a remodeled residential building. Today, the local church in Novi Sad is the second largest in our Union [South Slavonic Union] with a tendency to grow. This trend is due to the grace of God and personal and collective efforts of the church members who are engaged in missionary and medical work. The Sabbath services are regularly attended by visitors who through the zeal of their first love motivate all of us to provide the church in Novi Sad with a larger space for both the worship services and medical missionary work. Our aim is to establish the church missionary and health center in Novi Sad that would provide space for the following purposes: Regular worship services and children Sabbath School classes. Health lectures and evangelistic programs for the general public offered by qualified members of our church. Cooking classes. Library and book store for spiritual and health literature. Health food store. Studio for audio and video recording. To achieve these objectives we already have both the ideas and personnel, but we lack the funds. Therefore, we solicit your support for our noble plans through your prayers and through your donations. We thank you in advance for your generous help. Your brethren and sisters from the South Slavonic Union

The Church of God in Seven Periods

First Sabbath Offeringfor a missionary and health center in Novi Sad, Serbia
I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea (Revelation 1:11).

The names of the seven churches are symbolic of the church in different periods of the Christian Era. The number 7 indicates completeness, and is symbolic of the fact that the messages extend to the end of time, while the symbols used reveal the condition of the church at different periods in the history of the word. The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 585.

Suggested Reading: The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 578592.

What was the condition of the church in the first period of the Christian era? Revelation 2:2, 3.

At the first the experience of the church at Ephesus was marked with childlike simplicity and fervor. . . . The members of the church were united in sentiment and action.Ibid., pp. 578, 579.
b. In spite of such a desirable condition, what was Jesus complaint about the church, and how did she come to that condition? Revelation 2:4, 5.

The early Christians began to look for defects in one another. Dwelling upon mistakes, giving place to unkind criticism, they lost sight of the Saviour and of the great love He had revealed for sinners.Testimonies, vol. 8, p. 241.

2. SMYRNAMYRRH, SWEET PERFUMEA.D. 100 TO 323

What was the condition of the church in the period of Smyrna? What wealth did it possess? Revelation 2:8, 9; 2 Corinthians 8:9; James 2:5.

The early Christians were indeed a peculiar people. Their blameless deportment and unswerving faith were a continual reproof that disturbed the sinners peace. Though few in numbers, without wealth, position, or honorary titles, they were a terror to evildoers wherever their character and doctrines were known. Therefore they were hated by the wicked, even as Abel was hated by the ungodly Cain. . . . From the days of Christ until now His faithful disciples have excited the hatred and opposition of those who love and follow the ways of sin.The Great Controversy, p. 46. If the purpose and aim of your life is to lay up treasure in heaven, you will be lifted above the base, sordid, demoralizing influence of an inordinate desire to obtain wealth in this life. Laying up treasure in heaven will give nobility to the character; it will strengthen benevolence, encourage mercy; cultivate sympathy, brotherly kindness, and charity. It will unite the soul of man with Christ, by links that can never be broken. You may lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven by being rich in good worksrich in imperishable and spiritual things. Our High Calling, p. 195.
b. What did Jesus promise to the victorious believers in Smyrna who would endure to the end? Revelation 2:10; Acts 14:22.

Like Gods servants of old, many [followers of Christ] were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection (Hebrews 11:35). These called to mind the words of their Master, that when persecuted for Christs sake, they were to be exceeding glad, for great would be their reward in heaven; for so the prophets had been persecuted before them. They rejoiced that they were accounted worthy to suffer for the truth, and songs of triumph ascended from the midst of crackling flames. The Great Controversy, p.
41.

Before entering the City of God, the Saviour bestows upon His followers the emblems of victory and invests them with the insignia of their royal state. . . . Upon the heads of the overcomers, Jesus with His own right hand places the crown of glory.Ibid., pp. 645, 646.

3. PERGAMOSHEIGHT, ELEVATIONA.D. 323 TO 538 THYATIRASACRIFICE OF CONTRITION538 TO 1798

a. What rebuke did Jesus administer to the church of Pergamos? Revelation 2:1215. What was the doctrine of the Nicolaitans?

Signs of the Times, February 25, 1897.

b. What did spiritual Jezebel insinuate in the period of Thyatira? Revelation 2:1923. What atrocities were practiced by Jezebel of old and repeated in Thyatira? 1 Kings 18:4; 19:1, 2. What promise was given to the overcomers of Thyatira? Revelation 2:2628.

In the thirteenth century was established that most terrible of all the engines of the papacythe Inquisition. . . . Babylon the great was drunken with the blood of the saints (Revelation 17:5, 6). The mangled forms of millions of martyrs cried to God for vengeance upon that apostate power. The Great Controversy, pp. 59, 60. In the fourteenth century arose in England the morning star of the Reformation. John Wycliffe was the herald of reform, not for England alone, but for all Christendom.Ibid., p. 80.

[During the time of Israels encampment beside Jordan] at Balaams suggestion, a grand festival in honor of their [heathen] gods was appointed by the king of Moab, and it was secretly arranged that Balaam should induce the Israelites to attend. . . . As they united in mirth and feasting, indulgence in wine beclouded their senses and broke down the barriers of self-control. Passion had full sway; and having defiled their consciences by lewdness, they were persuaded to bow down to idols. They offered sacrifice upon heathen altars and participated in the most degrading rites.Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 454. It is our work to know our special failings and sins, which cause darkness and spiritual feebleness, and quenched our first love. Is it worldliness? Is it selfishness? Is it the love of self-esteem? Is it striving to be first? Is it the sin of sensuality that is intensely active? Is it the sin of the Nicolaitans, turning the grace of God into lasciviousness?Ye Shall Receive Power, p. 361. The doctrine is now largely taught that the gospel of Christ has made the law of God of no effect; that by believing we are released from the necessity of being doers of the Word. But this is the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which Christ so unsparingly condemned. The

4. SARDISTHAT WHICH REMAINS1798 TO 1833 PHILADELPHIABROTHERLY LOVE1833 TO 1844

a. How does the Lord depict the condition of the Sardis church? Revelation 3:1. What responsibility rested upon the few faithful who were still alive? Revelation 3:25.

The sin especially charged against this [Sardis] church is that they have not strengthened the things that remain, that are ready to die. Does this warning apply to us? Let us individually examine our hearts in the light of Gods word, and let our first work be to set our hearts in order by the help of Christ.Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 610. In the message to the church at Sardis two parties are presentedthose who have a name to live, but are dead; and those who are striving to overcome. The Review and Herald, August 20, 1903. In all ages there have been those who claimed a right to the favor of God even while they were disregarding some of His commands. But the Scriptures declare that by works is faith made perfect; and that, without the works of obedience, faith is dead (James 2:22, 17). He that professes to know God, and keepeth not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him (1 John 2:4).
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 73.

b. What important event took place in the end of the period of Philadelphia? Revelation 3:7, 8; 11:19.

The time for the commandments of God to shine out with all their importance, and for Gods people to be tried on the Sabbath truth, was when the door was opened in the most holy place in the heavenly sanctuary, where the ark is, in which are contained the ten commandments. This door was not opened until the mediation of Jesus was finished in the holy place of the sanctuary in 1844. Then Jesus rose up and shut the door of the holy place, and opened the door into the most holy, and passed within the second veil, where He now stands by the ark, and where the faith of Israel now reaches. . . . Since Jesus has opened the door into the most holy place, which contains the ark, the commandments have been shining out to Gods people, and they are being tested on the Sabbath question.Early

5. LAODICEATHE JUDGMENT OF THE PEOPLE1844 TO THE END

a. What is the problem with the church of Laodicea? Revelation 3:1417. What counsel is given to the angel of the church? Revelation 3:18, 19.

Halfhearted Christians are worse than infidels. Our High Calling,

p. 348.

The True Witness counsels us to buy of Him gold tried in the fire, white raiment, and eyesalve. The gold here recommended as having been tried in the fire is faith and love. It makes the heart rich; for it has been purged until it is pure, and the more it is tested the more brilliant is its luster. The white raiment is purity of character, the righteousness of Christ imparted to the sinner. This is indeed a garment of heavenly texture, that can be bought only of Christ for a life of willing obedience. The eyesalve is that wisdom and grace which enables us to discern between the evil and the good, and to detect sin under any guise.Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 88.
b. What is promised to the overcomer in the period of Laodicea, and how can the victory be obtained? Revelation 3:20, 21; 20:4.

If any will not be purified through obeying the truth, and overcome their selfishness, their pride, and evil passions, the angels of God have the charge: They are joined to their idols, let them alone, and they pass on to their work, leaving these with their sinful traits unsubdued, to the control of evil angels. Those who come up to every point, and stand every test, and overcome, be the price what it may, have heeded the counsel of the True Witness.Ibid., vol. 1, p. 187.

Gods Visible Church Today

If I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15).

Very close and sacred is the relation between Christ and His churchHe the bridegroom, and the church the bride; He the head, and the church the body. Connection with Christ, then, involves connection with His church.Education, p. 268. Suggested Reading: Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 1531.

a.

July 5

How does God depict His church? Deuteronomy 32:9, 10; Zechariah 2:8.

The church is to be the Lords light bearer to shine amid the moral darkness of a corrupt and sinful generation. There can be nothing in the world that is so dear to God as His church. Nothing is guarded by Him with such jealous care.Manuscript Releases, vol. 18, p. 208. The church of Christ, enfeebled and defective as it may be, is the only object on earth on which He bestows His supreme regard. . . . He comes personally by His Holy Spirit into the midst of His church.
Testimonies to Ministers, p. 15.

b. What did Jesus say of His church built upon the Rock? Matthew 16:18.

The word Peter signifies a stonea rolling stone. Peter was not the rock upon which the church was founded. The gates of hell did prevail against him when he denied his Lord with cursing and swearing. The church was built upon One against whom the gates of hell could not prevail. The Desire of Ages, p. 413. The church . . . is built on faith in Christ, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matthew 16:18).Sons and Daughters of God, p. 77.

2. CHRIST AND HIS CHURCHA CITY OF REFUGE
a.

July 6

In the Old Testament, what provision was made to save a sinner who committed sin involuntarily? Numbers 35:1115.

The cities of refuge appointed for God's ancient people were a symbol of the refuge provided in Christ. The same merciful Saviour who appointed those temporal cities of refuge has by the shedding of His own blood provided for the transgressors of God's law a sure retreat, into which they may flee for safety from the second death. No power can take out of His hands the souls that go to Him for pardon.Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 516. As the manslayer was in constant peril until within the city of refuge, so is the transgressor of Gods law exposed to divine wrath until he finds a hiding place in Christ. The Signs of the Times, January
20, 1881.

b. What is the purpose of the church in these last days? Acts 2:47; Ephesians 4:1113.

The church is Gods fortress, His city of refuge, which He holds in a revolted world. Any betrayal of the church is treachery to Him who has bought mankind with the blood of His only begotten Son. From the beginning, faithful souls have constituted the church on earth. In every age the Lord has had His watchmen, who have borne a faithful testimony to the generation in which they lived. These sentinels gave the message of warning; and when they were called to lay off their armor, others took up the work. God brought these witnesses into covenant relation with Himself, uniting the church on earth with the church in heaven. He has sent forth His angels to minister to His church, and the gates of hell have not been able to prevail against His people. . . . During ages of spiritual darkness the church of God has been as a city set on a hill. From age to age, through successive generations, the pure doctrines of heaven have been unfolding within its borders. The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 11, 12.

July 7

To what are the believers compared in the Bible? Psalm 100:3, 4; John 10:16. Where, those that are baptized in Christ, should be? 1 Corinthians 12:12, 13.

The church is organized for service; and in a life of service to Christ, connection with the church is one of the first steps. Loyalty to Christ demands the faithful performance of church duties. This is an important part of ones training; and in a church imbued with the Masters life, it will lead directly to effort for the world without.
Education, pp. 268, 269.

All who believe are to be gathered into one church. The Desire

of Ages, p. 821.

The Lord could carry forward His work without our cooperation. He is not dependent on us for our money, our time, or our labor. But the church is very precious in His sight. It is the case which contains His jewels, the fold which encloses His flock, and He longs to see it without spot or blemish or any such things. He yearns after it with unspeakable love.In Heavenly Places, p. 324.
b. What is stated in the Word of God about the good shepherd and His sheep? Psalm 23:1; Isaiah 40:10, 11; John 10:1115. What is the duty of the undershepherd? Luke 15:46.

Jesus is the good Shepherd. His followers are the sheep of His pasture. A shepherd is always with his flock to defend them, to keep them from the wolves, to hunt up the lost sheep and carry them back to the fold.Lift Him Up, p. 215. When the lost sheep was found, it was borne home with joy, and much rejoicing followed. This illustrates the blessed, joyful work of laboring for the erring. The church that engages successfully in this work is a happy church.Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 22. Many are starving for the bread of life, and there is no time for accusing the brethren; rather pray one for another that ye may be healed, and go forth to seek and to save the lost and wandering sheep. Find the erring, discouraged ones by careful, diligent search, and bring them back to the fold. The Review and Herald, October 24, 1893.

a.

July 8

To what plants are those that are planted in the house of God, the church, compared? Psalms 1:3; 92:12, 13; Jeremiah 17:8.

In all the Lords arrangements there is nothing more beautiful than His plan of giving to men and women a diversity of gifts. . . . Many have received but a limited religious and intellectual training, but God has a work for this class to do if they will labor in humility, trusting in Him. From the endless variety of plants and flowers, we may learn an important lesson. All blossoms are not the same in form or color. Some possess healing virtues. Some are always fragrant. There are professing Christians who think it their duty to make every Christian like themselves. This is mans plan, not the plan of God. In the church of God there is room for characters as varied as are the flowers in a garden. In His spiritual garden there are many varieties of flowers.
Evangelism, pp. 98, 99.

A garden demands constant labor. The weeds must be removed; new plants must be set out; branches that are making too rapid development must be pruned back. So the Lord works for His garden, so He tends His plants. He cannot take pleasure in any development that does not reveal the graces of the character of Christ. The blood of Christ has made men and women Gods precious charge. Then how careful should we be not to manifest too much freedom in pulling up the plants that God has placed in His garden! Some plants are so feeble that they have hardly any life, and for these the Lord has a special care.Gods Amazing Grace, p. 65.
b. What does the Lord expect from those that are planted in His church? John 15:4, 5, 8, 16; Matthew 7:1620.

Just as a good tree will bear good fruit, so will the tree that is actually planted in the Lords garden produce good fruit unto eternal life. Besetting sins are overcome; evil thoughts are not allowed in the mind; evil habits are purged from the soul temple. The tendencies which have been biased in a wrong direction are turned in a right direction. Wrong dispositions and feelings are changed, new principles of action supplied, and there is a new standard of character. Holy tempers and sanctified emotions are now the fruit borne upon the Christian tree. The

Why is the church compared to the human body? 1 Corinthians 12:12, 27, 28; Ephesians 4:11, 12, 15, 16; Colossians 1:17, 18, 24.

By a comparison of the church with the human body, the apostle [Paul] aptly illustrated the close and harmonious relationship that should exist among all members of the church of Christ. The Acts of
the Apostles, p. 317.

b. As in the physical body there is the head, the heart, and other members, so it is also with the church. Who specifically denote the head, heart, and members of the mystical body? Ephesians 5:23; Colossians 1:18; Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:1423, 27.

Christ is the head of the church. The members of His body follow the directions of the Head, just as the members of the human body obey the impulses of the mind. The Review and Herald, July 18,
1882.

The great heart of the work is at _____ ; and, as the human heart throws its living current of blood into all parts of the body, so does the management at this place, the headquarters of our church, affect the whole body of believers. If the physical heart is healthy, the blood that is sent from it through the system is also healthy; but if this fountain is impure, the whole organism becomes diseased by the poison of the vital fluid. So it is with us. If the heart of the work becomes corrupt, the whole church, in its various branches and interests, scattered abroad over the face of the earth, suffers in consequence.

What did Jesus do as He started His earthly ministry? Luke 6:12, 13.

When Jesus had ended His instruction to the disciples, He gathered the little band close about Him, and kneeling in the midst of them, and laying His hands upon their heads, He offered a prayer dedicating them to His sacred work. Thus the Lords disciples were ordained to the gospel ministry. The Desire of Ages, p. 296.
b. What commission was given to the disciplesand to us? Matthew 28:1820.

To His disciples Christ said, . . . To you, My disciples, I commit this message of mercy. It is to be given to Israel first, and then to all nations, tongues, and peoples. It is to be given to Jews and Gentiles. All who believe are to be gathered into one church.Ibid., p. 821. The disciples were to teach what Christ had taught. That which He had spoken, not only in person, but through all the prophets and teachers of the Old Testament, is here included. Human teaching is shut out. There is no place for tradition, for mans theories and conclusions, or for church legislation. No laws ordained by ecclesiastical authority are included in the commission. None of these are Christs servants to teach. The law and the prophets, with the record of His own words and deeds, are the treasure committed to the disciples to be given to the world.Ibid., p. 826.

2. CHURCH GOVERNMENT
a.

July 13

What is meant by government in the church? 1 Corinthians 12:28; Ephesians 4:11.

Let none entertain the thought that we can dispense with organization. It has cost us much study and many prayers for wisdom, that we know God has answered, to erect this structure. It has been built up by His direction, through much sacrifice and conflict. Let none of our brethren be so deceived as to attempt to tear it down, for you will thus bring in a condition of things that you do not dream of. In the name of the Lord I declare to you that it is to stand, strengthened, established, and settled. . . . Angels work harmoniously. Perfect order characterizes all their movements. The more closely we imitate the harmony and order of the angelic host, the more successful will be the efforts of these heavenly agents in our behalf. If we see no necessity for harmonious action, and are disorderly, undisciplined, and disorganized in our course of action, angels, who are thoroughly organized and move in perfect order, cannot work for us successfully. They turn away in grief, for they are not authorized to bless confusion, distraction, and disorganization. All who desire the cooperation of the heavenly messengers must work in unison with them. Those who have the unction from on high will in all their efforts encourage order, discipline, and union of action, and then the angels of God can cooperate with them. But never, never will these heavenly messengers place their endorsement upon irregularity, disorganization, and disorder.Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 27, 28.
b. What would be the result if there were no order, system, and organization in the church? 1 Corinthians 14:33; Ephesians 4:14.

O how Satan would rejoice if he could succeed in his efforts to get in among this [independent-minded] people, and disorganize the work at a time when thorough organization is essential, and will be the greatest power to keep out spurious uprisings, and to refute claims not endorsed by the word of God! We want to hold the lines evenly, that there shall be no breaking down of the system of organization and order that has been built up by wise, careful labor. License must not be given to disorderly elements that desire to control the work at this time.Gospel Workers, p. 487.

July 14

Describe the experience of the conversion of Saul of Tarsus. Acts 9:16, 1012.

Many have an idea that they are responsible to Christ alone for their light and experience, independently of His recognized followers on earth. But in the history of the conversion of Saul, important principles are given us, which we should ever bear in mind. He was brought directly into the presence of Christ. He was one whom Christ intended for a most important work, one who was to be a chosen vessel unto Him; yet the Lord did not immediately impart to him the lessons of truth. He arrested his course and convicted him; but when asked by him, What wilt thou have me to do? the Saviour placed him in connection with His church, and let them direct him what to do. Thus Jesus gave sanction to the authority of His organized church, and placed Saul in connection with His representatives on earth. All blessings flow from Christ, but He had now established a church as His representative on earth, and to it belonged the work of directing the repentant sinner in the way of life. Jesus is the friend of sinners; His heart is touched by their woe; He has all power, both in heaven and upon earth; but He respects the means that He has ordained for the enlightenment and salvation of men; He directs sinners to the church, which He has made a channel of light to the world. The Review and Herald, March 23, 1911.
b. Can one belong to Christ while he or she repudiates the organized church, the body of Christ? Matthew 12:30.

Everyone who seeks to do well in his own finite strength will find his efforts a failure; but those who accept Christ by faith will find him a personal Saviour. They will enlist in His army.Fundamentals of
Christian Education, p. 292.

Independence of spirit is liable to lead the human agent to have too much confidence in himself and to trust in his own judgment rather than to respect the counsel and highly esteem the judgment of his brethren. The Acts of the Apostles, p. 163. The Lord loves His church. It is not to be disorganized or broken up into independent atoms. There is not the least consistency in this; there is not the least evidence that such a thing will be.Selected

July 15

What does the Word of God say about persons whom the Lord does not call for the gospel ministry but rather push themselves in? Jeremiah 23:21.

Those men who are not called of God are generally the very ones that are the most confident that they are so called and that their labors are very important.Early Writings, p. 98. The church should feel their responsibility and should look carefully and attentively at the lives, qualifications, and general course of those who profess to be teachers. If unmistakable evidence is not given that God has called them, and that the woe is upon them if they heed not this call, it is the duty of the church to act and let it be known that these persons are not acknowledged as teachers by the church. . . . In the apostles day the church was in danger of being deceived and imposed upon by false teachers. Therefore the brethren chose men who had given good evidence that they were capable of ruling well their own house and preserving order in their own families, and who could enlighten those who were in darkness. Inquiry was made of God concerning these, and then, according to the mind of the church and the Holy Ghost, they were set apart by the laying on of hands.Ibid., pp. 100, 101.
b. What should the church do about those who willfully act independently from the church, the body of Christ? Romans 16:17; Titus 3:10.

The spirit of pulling away from fellow laborers, the spirit of disorganization, is in the very air we breathe. By some, all efforts to establish order are regarded as dangerousas a restriction of personal liberty, and hence to be feared as popery. These deceived souls regard it a virtue to boast of their freedom to think and act independently. . . . Some have advanced the thought that as we near the close of time, every child of God will act independently of any religious organization. But I have been instructed by the Lord that in this work there is no such thing as every mans being independent. The stars of heaven are all under law, each influencing the other to do the will of God, yielding their common obedience to the law that controls their action. And in order that the Lords work may advance healthfully and solidly, His people must draw together.Testimonies, vol. 9, pp. 257, 258.

5. THE PURPOSE OF ORGANIZATION
a.

July 16

Why is organization vital in the church? Ephesians 4:1116.

In order for the work to be carried forward with efficiency, the Lord sent forth His disciples two and two. God has a church, and these churches are organized on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.
Testimonies to Southern Africa, p. 7.

As our numbers increased, it was evident that without some form of organization there would be great confusion, and the work would not be carried forward successfully. To provide for the support of the ministry, for carrying the work in new fields, for protecting both the churches and the ministry from unworthy members, for holding church property, for the publication of the truth through the press, and for many other objects, organization was indispensable.
Testimonies to Ministers, p. 26.

b. What was Pauls attitude about organization? 1 Corinthians 1:10; 14:33, 40.

Notwithstanding the fact that Paul was personally taught by God, he had no strained ideas of individual responsibility. While looking to God for direct guidance, he was ever ready to recognize the authority vested in the body of believers united in church fellowship. He felt the need of counsel, and when matters of importance arose, he was glad to lay these before the church and to unite with his brethren in seeking God for wisdom to make right decisions. The

July 19

What steps are to be taken before a person receives church discipline? Matthew 18:1518.

No church officer should advise, no committee should recommend, nor should any church vote, that the name of a wrongdoer shall be removed from the church books, until the instruction given by Christ has been faithfully followed. When this instruction has been followed, the church has cleared herself before God. The evil must then be made to appear as it is, and must be removed, that it may not become more and more widespread.Ibid.,
pp. 262, 263.

b. What authority does the church have regarding discipline? John 20:23; Matthew 18:18.

To [the church] the Lord has delegated the power to settle all questions respecting its prosperity, purity, and order. Upon it rests the responsibility of excluding from its fellowship those who are unworthy, who by their un-Christlike conduct would bring dishonor on the truth.Ibid., p. 263.

What is the tragic response of some as the Lord calls them to return to Him? Jeremiah 6:16; 13:10.

the Times, June 22, 1888.

By repentance and confession you can have pardon registered against your name; or you can resist the conviction of the Spirit of God. . . . But there stands the action, there stands the evil committed.
Sons and Daughters of God, p. 309.

b. If the leaders keep silent and gloss over the wrongs of the members, what will be the result? Isaiah 56:10, 11; Philippians 3:2; Ezekiel 33:29; John 3:19, 20.

Those who have too little courage to reprove wrong, or who through indolence or lack of interest make no earnest effort to purify the family or the church of God, are held accountable for the evil that may result from their neglect of duty. We are just as responsible for evils that we might have checked in others by exercise of parental or pastoral authority as if the acts had been our own.Patriarchs and
Prophets, p. 578.

[God] would teach His people that disobedience and sin are exceedingly offensive to Him and are not to be lightly regarded. He shows us that when His people are found in sin they should at once take decided measures to put that sin from them, that His frown may not rest upon them all. But if the sins of the people are passed over by those in responsible positions, His frown will be upon them, and the people of God, as a body, will be held responsible for those sins. In His dealings with His people in the past the Lord shows the necessity of purifying the church from wrongs. One sinner may diffuse darkness that will exclude the light of God from the entire congregation.Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 265.

a.

July 21

What is the duty and responsibility of those holding a position of trust in the church when they see members practicing sin? 1 Timothy 5:20; Titus 1:13; 2:15.

The divine rebuke is upon that false sympathy for the sinner which endeavors to excuse his sin. It is the effect of sin to deaden the moral perceptions, so that the wrongdoer does not realize the enormity of transgression, and without the convicting power of the Holy Spirit he remains in partial blindness to his sin. It is the duty of Christs servants to show these erring ones their peril.Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 361. To defy the words of the Lord, spoken through His chosen instruments, will only provoke His anger and eventually bring certain ruin upon the offender. Indignation often kindles in the heart of the sinner against the agent whom God chooses to deliver His reproofs.
Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 180.

Ministers should be faithful watchmen, seeing the evil and warning the people. Their dangers must be set before them continually and pressed home upon them.Ibid., p. 515.
b. What will be the fate of unfaithful leaders if they refuse to correct the evils committed by the members of the church? Ezekiel 3:17, 18; 33:6.

The rebuke of God is upon every minister and every medical missionary leader who has been asleep on the walls of Zion, when as vigilant watchmen they should have warned the people of the Lord against the dangers threatening them.Manuscript Releases, vol. 19, p. 357. The watchmen anciently placed on the walls of the cities occupied a most important position. Upon their faithfulness depended the safety of all within the walls. When danger was apprehended, they were not to sleep day or night. Every few minutes they were required to call to one another to see that all were awake and that no harm had come to any.The Review and Herald, April 15, 1902. I saw that it was time that the watchmen upon the walls of Zion understood the responsibility and sacredness of their mission. They should feel that a woe is upon them if they do not perform the work God has committed to them. If they become unfaithful, they are endangering the safety of the flock of God, endangering the cause of truth, and exposing it to the ridicule of our enemies. Oh, what a work is this! It will surely meet its reward.Spiritual Gifts, vol. 4b, pp. 124, 125.

How does the Lord mold His erring people for the spiritual building? Revelation 3:19; Hebrew 12:611; 1 Peter 2:4, 5.

Review and Herald, September 24, 1903.

When the heart is full of self-sufficiency and preoccupied with the superficial things of earth, the Lord Jesus rebukes and chastens in order that men may awake to a realization of their true condition.
The Signs of the Times, August 1, 1895.

Take with you those who are spiritually minded, and talk with the one in error in regard to the wrong. He may yield to the united appeals of his brethren. As he sees their agreement in the matter, his mind may be enlightened.Testimonies, vol. 7, p. 262.
b. When parents or ministers try to correct the erring ones, what should they always keep in mind? 2 Timothy 4:2; Colossians 3:1214.

Sin should be faithfully reproved and right discipline promptly and firmly enforced. Yet harsh dealing will not help the wrongdoer to see his error or to reform. Let all needed reproof or correction be given in the spirit which actuated our Saviour. Let firmness and decision be blended with sympathy and love. By wise management, the wayward, stubborn youth may be transformed. Parents, to accomplish such work, you need Christlike patience and selfcommand. Do not irritate by a sharp word or an angry look. Be calm; and let your heart often ascend in prayer to God for grace and wisdom. Angels will come to your side and help you to raise up a standard against the enemy. The Review and Herald, June 13, 1882. What should be done to the stubborn ones who refuse to yield to correction and persist instead in sin? 1 Corinthians 5:1113. How can we distinguish loyal from disloyal leaders? Revelation 2:2.

Christ has plainly taught that those who persist in open sin must be separated from the church.Christs Object Lessons, p. 71. Sin and sinners in the church must be promptly dealt with, that others may not be contaminated. Truth and purity require that we make more thorough work to cleanse the camp from Achans. Let those in responsible positions not suffer sin in a brother. Show him that he must eighter put away his sins or be separated from the church.Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 147. If men close their eyes to the testimonies God has been pleased to give, and think it wisdom to walk in the light of the sparks of their own kindling, it will spoil the church. Such men are not qualified to become either ministers or presidents.Testimonies to Ministers, p. 327.
b. How will God bless the church after all evils have been removed? Ephesians 5:27.

There is nothing that Satan fears so much as that the people of God shall clear the way by removing every hindrance, so that the Lord can pour out His Spirit upon a languishing church and an impenitent congregation.Messages to Young People, p. 133. First Sabbath Offering

Literature in needy countries
How wonderful it is to wake up in the morning and start the day with the Lord in devotion and prayer. We can study the Bible, or the Sabbath Bible Lessons, or choose one of the many Spirit of Prophecy books on our bookshelf. No so, with a great number of people in undeveloped countries. For one, there is very little inspired material translated and printed in other languages (other than English). Thanks to previous donations for literature in needy countries, believers can read for the first time Steps to Christ in Urdu (Pakistan). Also, one of the only ways to witness in various nations with oppressive regimes is by handing out a pamphlet or booklet. These believers in Christ struggle to make a living and do not have the means to publish literature. Therefore, we are urging our brethren, sisters, and friends to donate toward this cause: Literature in needy countries. The angel who unites in the proclamation of the third angels message is to lighten the whole earth with his glory. A work of worldwide extent and unwonted power is here foretold. The advent movement of 184044 was a glorious manifestation of the power of God; the first angels message was carried to every missionary station in the world, . . . but these are to be exceeded by the mighty movement under the last warning of the third angel. . . . The message will be carried not so much by argument as by the deep conviction of the Spirit of God. The arguments have been presented. The seed has been sown, and now it will spring up and bear fruit. The publications distributed by missionary workers have exerted their influence. The Great Controversy, pp. 611, 612. Thank you for your generous offering which will help spread the gospel of salvation to many precious souls who are now in darkness. Your brethren from the Publishing Department

They seem to think that they have a right to do with their means just as it pleases them, no matter what the Lord has commanded, or what may be the need of their fellowmen. b. What dangers exist in the pursuit of earthly wealth? 1 Timothy 6:611; Psalm 49:6, 7; Proverbs 28:20.

Those who possess the ability to acquire property need to be constantly on the watch or they will turn their acquisitiveness to bad account and not maintain strict honesty. Thus many fall into temptation, overreach, receive more for a thing than it is worth, and sacrifice the generous, benevolent, noble principles of their manhood for sordid gain.Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 537. The great apostle [Paul], in his letter to Timothy, would impress upon his mind the necessity of giving such instruction as should remove the deception which so easily steals upon the rich, that because of their ability to acquire wealth, they are superior in wisdom and judgment to those who are in poverty; that gain is godliness. They flatter themselves that because of their wealth they are especially favored of God. Here is the fearful deception. Individuals may devote their whole lives to the one object of acquiring riches, yet as they brought nothing into the world, they can carry nothing out. They must die and leave that which cost them so much labor to obtain. They stake their eternal interest to obtain a little of this world and lose both worlds. But some are determined to be rich; it is their constant study; and in their zeal, eternal considerations are overlooked. In the pursuit of wealth, they are blinded by Satan and made to believe that their motives are good.

a.

July 28

In the parable of the talents, how did the Lord distribute His goods to His stewards? Matthew 25:14, 15.

The talents, however few, are to be put to use. The question that most concerns us is not, How much have I received? but, What am I doing with that which I have? The development of all our powers is the first duty we owe to God and to our fellowmen. No one who is not growing daily in capability and usefulness is fulfilling the purpose of life. In making a profession of faith in Christ we pledge ourselves to become all that it is possible for us to be as workers for the Master, and we should cultivate every faculty to the highest degree of perfection, that we may do the greatest amount of good of which we are capable.Christs Object Lessons, pp. 329, 330. Our time belongs to God. Every moment is His, and we are under the most solemn obligation to improve it to His glory. Of no talent He has given will He require a more strict account than of our time.Ibid., p. 342.
b. Every one of us has received some talents. What is required of uswhether our talents are few or many? 1 Corinthians 4:2; Matthew 25:19.

Let no one permit himself to be unhappy and repine because his talents are few, and he cannot glorify God with that which has not been bestowed upon him, and for the use of which he is not responsible. If you can do but little, you are responsible only for the doing of that little with fidelity. If you have but one talent, use it well, and God will accept your effort to make the most of what He has given; He will approve of you as He sees you faithful over a few things. We have all been entrusted with some gift of God, and for its use we shall be held accountable. The Review and Herald, March 7, 1893. Money is of no more value than sand, only as it is put to use in providing for the necessities of life, in blessing others, and advancing the cause of Christ.Christs Object Lessons, p. 351. All the prosperity we enjoy is the result of divine beneficence. God is the great and bountiful giver. If He requires any portion of the liberal supply He has given us, it is not that He may be enriched by our gifts, for He needs nothing from our hand; but it is that we may have an opportunity to exercise self-denial, love, and sympathy for our fellowmen, and thus become highly exalted.Testimonies, vol. 4,

pp. 353, 354.

b. What did the man who only received one talent do with itand what was the result? Matthew 25:2430.

It was the one with the smallest gift who left his talent unimproved. In this is given a warning to all who feel that the smallness of their endowments excuses them from service for Christ. If they could do some great thing, how gladly would they undertake it; but because they can serve only in little things, they think themselves justified in doing nothing. In this they err. The Lord in His distribution of gifts is testing character. The man who neglected to improve his talent proved himself an unfaithful servant. Had he received five talents, he would have buried them as he buried the one.Ibid., p. 355. Have you only one talent? Put it out to the exchangers, by wise investment increasing it to two. Do with your might what your hands find to do. Use your talent so wisely that it will fulfil its appointed mission.Messages to Young People, p. 301. What words will be uttered to those who improved their legacies, gaining other talents? Matthew 25:2023.

God keeps a faithful account with every human being in our world. And when the day of reckoning comes, the faithful steward takes no credit to himself. He does not say, My pound; but, Thy pound hath gained other pounds. He knows that without the entrusted gift no increase could have been made. He feels that in faithfully discharging his stewardship he has but done his duty. The capital was the Lords, and by His power he was enabled to trade upon it successfully. His name only should be glorified.Counsels on
Stewardship, pp. 111, 112.

The well-doer is not rewarded in proportion to the number of his entrusted talents, but in proportion to his faithfulness in using wisely that which he has, and the unselfishness of the motive that prompts his efforts.Atlantic Union Gleaner, September 16, 1903.
b. What will be the great reward of the faithful stewards? 2 Timothy 4:7, 8; 1 Peter 5:4; Revelation 2:10 (last part).

The faithful servant, who invests his talent in the cause of God, who uses his money to the glory of God, will receive the commendation, Well done, thou good and faithful servant; . . . enter thou into the joy of thy lord (Matthew 25:21). What will be this joy of the Lord?It will be the joy of seeing souls saved in the kingdom of God. Those who are faithful stewards are partners with Christ, who, for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2).The Youths Instructor, November 23, 1899.

But will you rob God because you think the management of the work is not right? Make your complaint, plainly and openly, in the right spirit, to the proper ones. Send in your petitions for things to be adjusted and set in order; but do not withdraw from the work of God, and prove unfaithful, because others are not doing right.Ibid., p. 227.

2. THE TITHE IS SACRED
a.

August 3

What do the Sabbath and the tithe have in common? Exodus 31:15; Leviticus 23:3; 27:30, 32.

The very same language is used concerning the Sabbath as in the law of the tithe: The seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God (Exodus 20:10). Man has no right nor power to substitute the first day for the seventh. He may pretend to do this; nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure (2 Timothy 2:19). The customs and teachings of men will not lessen the claims of the divine law. God has sanctified the seventh day. That specified portion of time, set apart by God Himself for religious worship, continues as sacred today as when first hallowed by our Creator. In like manner a tithe of our income is holy unto the Lord. The New Testament does not reenact the law of the tithe, as it does not that of the Sabbath; for the validity of both is assumed, and their deep spiritual import explained.Counsels on Stewardship, p. 66.
b. Was the tithing system only for the children of Israel, or did it exist before Sinai? Genesis 14:1820. What is declared about the tithe in the New Testament? Matthew 23:23; Hebrews 7:8.

The tithing system is binding upon Gods people in these last days as truly as it was upon ancient Israel.Gospel Workers (1892), p. 98.
c. Besides the tithe, for what else does God call? Exodus 36:3.

The contributions required of the Hebrews for religious and charitable purposes amounted to fully one fourth of their income. So heavy a tax upon the resources of the people might be expected to reduce them to poverty; but, on the contrary, the faithful observance of these regulations was one of the conditions of their prosperity.
Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 527.

There are even more urgent necessities upon the Israel of God in these last days than were upon ancient Israel. There is a great and important work to be accomplished in a very short time.

3. ROBBING GOD
a.

August 4

What does the eighth commandment forbid, and how is it related to the tithing system? Exodus 20:15; Malachi 3:8, 9.

Many in our churches are robbing God in tithes and offerings. God will execute upon them just that which He has declared. To the obedient, He will give rich blessings; to the transgressor, a curse. Every man who bears the message of truth to our churches must do his duty by warning, educating, rebuking.Testimonies to Ministers, p. 307. The majority of professed Christians part with their means with great reluctance. Many of them do not give one twentieth of their income to God, and many give far less than that; while there is a large class who rob God of the little tithe, and others who will give only the tithe.Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 474. Make haste, brethren, you now have [the] opportunity to be honest with God; delay not. For your souls sake, no longer rob God in tithes and offerings. The General Conference Bulletin, April 1, 1897.
b. What invitation does the Lord extend to those who are remiss in this particular? Malachi 3:7; Isaiah 55:7; Hosea 6:1. Relate the experience which took place in 1889.

As the sin of robbing God was presented, the people received clearer views of their duty and privilege in this matter. One brother said that for two years he had not paid his tithes, and he was in despair; but as he confessed his sin, he began to gather hope. What shall I do? he asked. I said, Give your note to the treasurer of the church; that will be businesslike. He thought that was a rather strange request; but he sat down, and began to write, For value received, I promise to pay. He looked up, as if to say, Is that the proper form in which to write out a note to the Lord? Yes, he continued, for value received. Have I not been receiving the blessings of God day after day? Have not the angels guarded me? Has not the Lord blessed me with all spiritual and temporal blessings? For value received, I promise to pay the sum of $571.50 to the church treasurer. After doing all he could do on his part, he was a happy man. In a few days he took up his note, and paid his tithe into the treasury. He had also made a Christmas donation of $125. Another brother gave a note for $1,000, expecting to meet it in a few weeks; and another gave a note for $300.Counsels on Stewardship, pp. 95, 96.

4. THE RESULT OF UNFAITHFULNESS
a.

August 5

What will result if we are unfaithful in returning to the Lord His own? Haggai 1:5, 6, 911.

Those who are selfishly withholding their means need not be surprised if Gods hand scatters. That which should have been devoted to the advancement of the work and cause of God, but which has been withheld, may be entrusted to a reckless son, and he may squander it. A fine horse, the pride of a vain heart, may be found dead in the stable. Occasionally a cow may die. Losses of fruit or other crops may come. God can scatter the means He has lent to His stewards, if they refuse to use it to His glory. Some, I saw, may have none of these losses to remind them of their remissness in duty, but their cases may be the more hopeless.Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 661, 662. One word from God could withdraw the rain and cut off our supplies of food. With locust and pestilence He could destroy our crops. The Lord has borne long with the perversity of men; but He has their deeds written in the books of heaven and will repay for their unrighteousness. The Review and Herald, January 24, 1899. Do not promise a portion to the Lord, and then appropriate it to your own use, lest your prayers become an abomination unto Him.Counsels on Stewardship, p. 78.
b. If we are faithful to return to the Lord that which is His, what will be the result? Joel 2:2227; Malachi 3:10, 11.

Let those who are poor give what they can. However small the offering may be, the Lord will recognize the self-sacrifice and will bless the giver.Atlantic Union Gleaner, March 29, 1905. In His tender mercy and unspeakable love, [God] has not only provided for the wants of the soul, but has also not been forgetful to provide for the necessities of our bodies. He has made us His almoners, and has bestowed upon us His gifts, reserving tithes and offerings for the advancement of His work. He does not ask us to give these things because He could not get along without them; for He owns all things; but He reserves them for Himself in order to give us, as His stewards, an opportunity to follow His example. He has given us the greatest gift He could possibly make, a gift of infinite value, so that it could not be said He could give a greater gift. The Home

5. BEING A CHEERFUL GIVER
a.

August 6

Since God is the owner of everything, why does He ask us to return to Him the tithes and offerings? Deuteronomy 8:2; Psalm 50:1012; 2 Corinthians 9:7.

When we rob God of the tithe, we also rob ourselves: for we lose the heavenly treasure. We deprive ourselves of the blessing of God, which is promised to those who deal honestly with Him. . . . Gods ministers should not fail to warn the people, showing from the Bible the result of withholding the tithe.Pacific Union Recorder, October 10, 1901.
b. As God requires a portion of what He has given us, what should we always keep in mind? Acts 20:35; 2 Corinthians 9:6.

If you, my brethren, have become selfish and are withholding from the Lord that which you should cheerfully give to His service, then you need the blood of sprinkling thoroughly applied, consecrating you and all your possessions to God.Testimonies, vol. 4,
pp. 122, 123.

In many places the work has been retarded because of the scarcity of means. The rebuke of God will rest upon those who do not come up to His help against the mighty powers of darkness. The

Let us with joyful hearts bring to our Creator the first fruits of all His bountiesour choicest possessions. The Faith I Live By, p. 245. The very best manner in which to give expression to our love for our Redeemer is to make offerings to bring souls to the knowledge of the truth. The plan of redemption was entirely voluntary on the part of our Redeemer, and it is the purpose of Christ that all our benevolence should be freewill offerings.Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 413.

Freewill Offerings
And [Bezaleel, Aholiab, and every wise hearted man] received of Moses all the offering, which the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to make it withal. And they brought yet unto him free offerings every morning (Exodus 36:3).

While the building of the sanctuary was in progress the people, old and youngmen, women, and childrencontinued to bring their offerings, until those in charge of the work found that they had enough, and even more than could be used.Patriarchs and Prophets, p.

Describe an example of a highly successful fund-raising. Exodus 36:3, 5, 6.

The plan of Moses to raise means for the building of the tabernacle was highly successful. No urging was necessary. Nor did he employ any of the devices to which churches in our day so often resort. He made no grand feast. He did not invite the people to scenes of gaiety, dancing, and general amusement; neither did he institute lotteries, nor anything of this profane order, to obtain means to erect the tabernacle for God. The Lord directed Moses to invite the children of Israel to bring their offerings. He was to accept gifts from everyone that gave willingly, from his heart. And the offerings came in so great abundance that Moses bade the people cease bringing, for they had supplied more than could be used.Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 529.

2. GIVING TO THE LORD
a.

August 10

What example recorded in the Bible should encourage us to give wholeheartedly to the Lords cause? Mark 12:4144.

The act of the widow who cast two mitesall that she hadinto the treasury is placed on record for the encouragement of those who, struggling with poverty, still desire by their gifts to aid the cause of God. . . . To make her offering, the widow had deprived herself of even the necessities of life, trusting God to supply her needs for the morrow. The Act of the Apostles, p. 342. Christ esteemed [the poor widows] gift more valuable than the large offerings of the most wealthy. They gave of their abundance. They would not feel the least privation because of their offerings. But the widow had deprived herself of even the necessaries of life to make her little offering. She could not see how her future wants were to be supplied. She had no husband to support her in want. She trusted God for the morrow. The value of the gift is not estimated so much by the amount that is given as by the proportion and by the motive which prompts the gift.Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 667.
b. What motive should prompt us to give our offerings to the Lord? Psalm 116:1, 17, 18.

The widows mite has been like a tiny stream flowing down through the ages, widening and deepening in its course, and contributing in a thousand directions to the extension of the truth and the relief of the needy. The influence of that small gift has acted and reacted upon thousands of hearts in every age and in every country. As the result, unnumbered gifts have flowed into the treasury of the Lord from the liberal, self-denying poor. And again, her example has stimulated to good works thousands of ease-loving, selfish, and doubting ones, and their gifts also have gone to swell the value of her offering.Counsels on Stewardship, p. 178. There are but few as poor as the widow who gave her two mites as an offering to God. The gift was small, yet it was all her living, and she was commended by the Master. He regarded the two mites of the poor widow as a greater contribution than the rich gifts of the wealthy. He did not measure the value of the offering by its amount, but by the motive, the cheerfulness and purity of the action. The

3. THE NEEDY MISSIONARY FIELDS
a.

August 11

What did Jesus say about the need of the great mission field? John 4:35; Matthew 9:37, 38.

If all our people paid a faithful tithe, there would be more means in the treasury to support the laborers already in the field, and to send forth still more laborers into the fields that are ripe for the harvest. The Review and Herald, April 14, 1903. God desires people to pray and to plan for the advancement of His work. But, like Cornelius, we are to unite praying with giving. Our prayers and our alms are to come up before God as a memorial. Faith without works is dead; and without a living faith it is impossible to please God. While we pray, we are to give all we possibly can, both of our labor and our means, for the fulfillment of our prayers.Atlantic
Union Gleaner, June 17, 1903.

As new fields open for gospel effort, the church must act quickly in sending missionaries to enter these fields. Special efforts must be made, while the angels are holding the four winds. All can now do something. Those who cannot be spared from the home field, or who are not fitted to go abroad, can give of their means; and all can pray that the Lord of the harvest shall raise up laborers. Pray, brethren, pray earnestly, that the hearts of some who are doing very little, and of others who have as yet done nothing, may be opened, and that the means which God has entrusted to them may be used wisely in sustaining His cause at home and abroad, to the glory of His name.
The Review and Herald, April 14, 1910.

b. What is the gospel charge given to Christs followers? How long will it be in force? How, only, can it be accomplished? Matthew 28:19, 20; 2 Timothy 4:25.

As the work enlarges, means will be needed to carry it forward in all its branches. Those who have been converted to the truth and been made partakers of His grace may become coworkers with Christ by making voluntary sacrifices and freewill offerings to Him. And when the members of the church wish in their hearts that there would be no more calls for means, they virtually say that they are content that the cause of God shall not progress.Testimonies, vol. 4,

4. THE LORD WILL BLESS
a.

August 12

What will make effective the means which we contribute, whether much or little? Deuteronomy 28:26; 2 Corinthians 9:7, 8.

The offerings of little children may be acceptable and pleasing to God. In accordance with the spirit that prompts the gifts will be the value of the offering. The poor, by following the rule of the apostle [Paul] and laying by a small sum every week, help to swell the treasury, and their gifts are wholly acceptable to God; for they make just as great, and even greater, sacrifices than their more wealthy brethren.Counsels on Sabbath School Work, p. 130. Families in poverty, who had experienced the sanctifying influence of the truth, and who therefore prized it, and felt grateful to God for it, have thought that they could and should deprive themselves of even the necessaries of life, in order to bring in their offerings to the treasury of the Lord. Some have deprived themselves of articles of clothing which they really needed to make them comfortable. Others have sold their only cow, and have dedicated to God the means thus received. In the sincerity of their souls, with many tears of gratitude because it was their privilege to do this for the cause of God, they have bowed before the Lord with their offering, and have invoked His blessing upon it as they sent it forth, praying that it might be the means of bringing the knowledge of the truth to souls in darkness.Counsels on Stewardship, p. 179. The very act of giving expands the heart of the giver, and unites him more fully to the Redeemer of the world.Ibid., p. 30.
b. What counsel is given to those who possess many houses and lands? Luke 12:33, 34; 1 Timothy 6:1719.

[Conscientious souls who believe the truth] often deprive themselves even of the apparent necessities of life; while there are men and women who, possessing houses and lands, cling to their earthly treasure with selfish tenacity, and do not have faith enough in the message and in God to put their means into His work. To these last are especially applicable the words of Christ, Sell that ye have, and give alms (Luke 12:33).Ibid., p. 58. It is too late now to cling to worldly treasures. Soon, unnecessary houses and lands will be of no benefit to anyone, for the curse of God will rest more and more heavily upon the earth.Manuscript Releases,

5. THE SPIRIT OF SACRIFICE
a.

August 13

What did Jesus do to save the world? 2 Corinthians 8:9; Philippians 2:7, 8. What appeals are made to us today?

Those who are acquiring means, and adding to their possessions, are far behind [to sacrifice offerings to God of their abundance]. They do comparatively nothing to what they might. They are withholding, and robbing God, for they are fearful they shall come to want. They dare not trust God. This is one of the reasons that, as a people, we are so sickly and so many are falling into their graves.Testimonies, vol. 2,
p. 199.

The necessities of the work now demand a greater outlay than ever before. The Lord calls upon His people to make every effort to curtail their expenses. Again I plead that instead of spending money for pictures of yourself and your friends, you should turn it into another channel. Let the money that has been devoted to the gratification of self, flow into the Lords treasury to sustain those who are working to save perishing souls. The General Conference Bulletin,
April 1, 1897.

b. What is promised to those who make sacrifices and donate means to advance Gods cause? John 4:36; Psalm 126:5, 6.

Of all the joys that await the redeemed in the earth made new, one of the highest will be the privilege of mingling our voices with the voices of those whom we have helped to save, in praise and adoration to the One who put into our hearts a desire to give. As God hath prospered us, let us now do all in our power to further the interests of His kingdom. The Review and Herald, September 10, 1908.

Our Attitude Toward Secular Authorities

Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God (Romans 13:1).

Davids power had been given him by God, but to be exercised only in harmony with the divine law. When he commanded that which was contrary to Gods law, it became sin to obey. The powers that be are ordained of God (Romans 13:1), but we are not to obey them contrary to Gods law.Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 719. Suggested Readings: Testimonies, vol. 6, pp. 394397. For what purpose did God establish earthly authorities? Romans 13:3, 4. How far should we obey the laws of the land?

b. We should always be the best law-abiding citizens. What are the good laws of the land that we should obey? Matthew 22:1721; Romans 13:6, 7.

The ten precepts of Jehovah are the foundation of all righteous and good laws. Those who love Gods commandments will conform to every good law of the land. 2. OBEY GODS LAW OR THE LAWS OF THE LAND?

From the experience of the early church, what important lesson can we learn through the words of Peter and John? Acts 4:1520.

It is our duty in every case to obey the laws of our land, unless they conflict with the higher law which God spoke with an audible voice from Sinai and afterward engraved on stone with His own finger.Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361. We are to recognize human government as an ordinance of divine appointment, and teach obedience to it as a sacred duty, within its legitimate sphere. But when its claims conflict with the claims of God, we must obey God rather than men. Gods word must be recognized as above all human legislation. A Thus saith the Lord is not to be set aside for a Thus saith the church or a Thus saith the state. The crown of Christ is to be lifted above the diadems of earthly potentates. We are not required to defy authorities. Our words, whether spoken or written, should be carefully considered, lest we place ourselves on record as uttering that which would make us appear antagonistic to law and order. We are not to say or do anything that would unnecessarily close up our way. We are to go forward in Christs name, advocating the truths committed to us.The Acts of the
Apostles, p. 69.

b. Especially which two commandments of Gods law will we be required to transgress? Exodus 20:811, 13.

Gods people, who are His peculiar treasure, cannot engage in this perplexing [American] war [between the states, which brought about the end of slavery], for it is opposed to every principle of their faith. In the army they cannot obey the truth and at the same time obey the requirements of their officers. There would be a continual violation of conscience.Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361. As the Sabbath has become the special point of controversy throughout Christendom, and religious and secular authorities have combined to enforce the observance of the Sunday, the persistent refusal of a small minority to yield to the popular demand will make them objects of universal execration. The Great Controversy, p. 615.

3. GOOD LAWS
a.

August 18

What is the purpose of the good laws of the land? 1 Peter 2:13, 14. What is the difference between the law of God and laws of the land? Psalm 19:7, 8.

Worldly men are governed by worldly principles. They can appreciate no other. Worldly policy and public opinion comprise the principle of action that governs them and leads them to practice the form of rightdoing. But Gods people cannot be governed by these motives. The words and commands of God, written in the soul, are spirit and life, and there is power in them to bring into subjection and enforce obedience. The ten precepts of Jehovah are the foundation of all righteous and good laws.Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 361. Where shall we find laws more noble, pure, and just, than are exhibited on the statute books wherein is recorded the instruction given to Moses for the children of Israel? Through all time these laws are to be perpetuated, that the character of Gods people may be formed after the divine similitude. The law is a wall of protection to those who are obedient to Gods precepts. From what other source can we gather such strength, or learn such noble science? What other book will teach men to love, fear, and obey God as does the Bible?
Fundamental of Christian Education, pp. 393, 394.

b. What was given to Israel, as a nation, to be their guide and rule? Deuteronomy 4:58; Nehemiah 9:13.

The Holy One of Israel has made known to us the statutes and laws which are to govern all human intelligences. These precepts, which have been pronounced holy, and just, and good, are to form the standard of action in the home. There can be no departure from them without sin, for they are the foundation of the Christian religion.Child Guidance, pp. 506, 507. [God] designed that the principles revealed through His people should be the means of restoring the moral image of God in man. Gods law must be exalted, His authority maintained; and to the house of Israel was given this great and noble work. God separated them from the world, that He might commit to them a sacred trust. He made them the depositaries of His law, and He purposed through them to preserve among men the knowledge of Himself.Prophets

4. THE LAWS OF THE LAND AGAINST US
a.

August 19

What argument was used by the enemies of Gods people for the purpose of exterminating them? How will this soon be repeated in our day? Esther 3:8, 9; Revelation 12:17.

The trying experiences that came to Gods people in the days of Esther were not peculiar to that age alone. . . . The same spirit that in ages past led men to persecute the true church, will in the future lead to the pursuance of a similar course toward those who maintain their loyalty to God. Even now preparations are being made for this last great conflict. The decree that will finally go forth against the remnant people of God will be very similar to that issued by Ahasuerus against the Jews. Today the enemies of the true church see in the little company keeping the Sabbath commandment, a Mordecai at the gate. The reverence of Gods people for His law is a constant rebuke to those who have cast off the fear of the Lord and are trampling on His Sabbath. . . . To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand for Sunday laws. But those who fear God, cannot accept an institution that violates a precept of the Decalogue. On this battlefield will be fought the last great conflict in the controversy between truth and error. And we are not left in doubt as to the issue. Today, as in the days of Esther and Mordecai, the Lord will vindicate His truth and His people.Prophets and Kings, pp. 605, 606. The world is against us, the popular churches are against us, the laws of the land will soon be against us. If there was ever a time when the people of God should press together, it is now.Testimonies, vol.
5, p. 236.

b. What will be the culminating act of the powers of the earth against those who keep the commandments of God? Revelation 13:1517.

A decree will finally be issued against those who hallow the Sabbath of the fourth commandment, denouncing them as deserving of the severest punishment and giving the people liberty, after a certain time, to put them to death. Romanism in the Old World and apostate Protestantism in the New will pursue a similar course toward those who honor all the divine precepts. The Great Controversy, pp. 615, 616.

What will be the conviction of those who persecute and try to kill Gods people? John 16:2; Matthew 24:9, 10.

[John 16:2 quoted.] These words come sounding down along the line to our time. A deception is upon those who oppress their fellowmen because they do not believe the same form of doctrine that their oppressors believe. The Review and Herald, April 19, 1898. With what zeal will the workers of iniquity pursue their satanic purpose! They will put light for darkness, and darkness for light, until they will sincerely believe they are servants of God, and doing Him service by persecuting His children.Ibid., May 8, 1888.
b. What will the wicked try to do, and how will God intervene in favor of His people? Psalms 50:15; 91:37, 10.

The powers of earth, uniting to war against the commandments of God, will decree that all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond (Revelation 13:16), shall conform to the customs of the church by the observance of the false sabbath. All who refuse compliance will be visited with civil penalties, and it will finally be declared that they are deserving of death. The Great Controversy, p. 604. The voice of God is heard from heaven, declaring the day and hour of Jesus coming, and delivering the everlasting covenant to His people. Like peals of loudest thunder His words roll through the earth. . . . And when the blessing is pronounced on those who have honored God by keeping His Sabbath holy, there is a mighty shout of victory.Ibid., p. 640.

[Genesis 3:15 quoted.] This sentence, uttered in the hearing of our first parents, was to [Adam and Eve] a promise. While it foretold war between man and Satan, it declared that the power of the great adversary would finally be broken. The Faith I Live By, p. 75.
b. By what means did patriarchs and prophets express their faith in the good news of salvation? Genesis 8:20; 22:7, 8, 13.

The worship of God through sacrificial offerings was established, and those who feared God acknowledged their sins before Him, and looked forward with gratitude and holy trust to the coming of the Day Star, which should guide the fallen sons of Adam to heaven, through repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Thus the gospel was preached in every sacrifice; and the works of the believers continually revealed their faith in a coming Saviour.Selected Messages, bk. 1, p. 231.

2. JOHN THE BAPTISTS MESSAGE
a.

August 24

When John began his ministry, what was the theme of his message? Matthew 3:1, 2; Luke 3:36.

The doctrine that John preached was, first, repentance for past sins; then, the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matthew 3:2). They must show repentance toward God; then they would be prepared to show faith in the One who was about to declare Himself unto them. The Review and Herald, November 28, 1907.
b. How did John deal with different types of people, and what were the results of his preaching? Luke 3:714.

To the self-righteous Pharisees, the priestly Sadducees, King Herod and his court, princes and soldiers, publicans and peasants, John had spoken with equal plainness. The Desire of Ages, p. 218. To those who were untaught in the oracles of God, it was enough for John to say, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. But when the Baptist saw the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he was stirred to give them a decided message. These men held themselves as a power among the people. Though they held different theories regarding some Bible subjects they were united in their desire to hear the words of the wilderness prophet. Some who came from curiosity, arrested by his words, became interested in the message he was giving, and were moved to be baptized. . . . Christ was about to appear as the revealer of the character of God. His very presence would make known to men their sin.The Review and Herald,
November 28, 1907.

Many of the scribes and Pharisees came confessing their sins, and asking for baptism. They had exalted themselves as better than other men, and had led the people to entertain a high opinion of their piety; now the guilty secrets of their lives were unveiled. But John was impressed by the Holy Spirit that many of these men had no real conviction of sin. They were timeservers. As friends of the prophet, they hoped to find favor with the coming Prince. And by receiving baptism at the hands of this popular young teacher, they thought to strengthen their influence with the people. John met them with the scathing inquiry, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance (Matthew 3:7, 8).The

3. THE MESSAGE OF JESUS
a.

August 25

As Jesus commenced His earthly ministry, what was the topic He urged upon the people? Mark 1:14, 15.

[Mark 1:15 quoted.] The gospel message, as given by the Saviour Himself, was based on the prophecies. The time which He declared to be fulfilled was the period made known by the angel Gabriel to Daniel. Seventy weeks, said the angel, are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most holy (Daniel 9:24). A day in prophecy stands for a year. See Numbers 14:34; Ezekiel 4:6. The seventy weeks, or four hundred and ninety days, represent four hundred and ninety years. . . . According to the prophecy, this period was to reach to the Messiah, the Anointed One. In A.D. 27, Jesus at His baptism received the anointing of the Holy Spirit, and soon afterward began His ministry. Then the message was proclaimed. The time is fulfilled. The Desire of Ages, p. 233.
b. What was the commission then given to the followers of Jesus, which is binding to this very day? Mark 16:15, 16; Matthew 28:1820; Acts 1:8.

The power of Christ, the crucified Saviour, to give eternal life, should be presented to the people. We should show them that the Old Testament is as verily the gospel in types and shadows as the New Testament is in its unfolding power.Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 392. The Saviour directed His disciples to begin their work in Jerusalem, and then pass on through Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Only a small proportion of the people accepted the doctrine; but the messengers bore the message rapidly from place to place.Maranatha, p. 38. God has organized His instrumentalities for drawing all men unto Him. As the worker seeks to give to others the light God has given him, the Lord imparts increased light; and doing his best, with an eye single to the glory of God, he realizes the value of souls. As he visits from house to house, opening the Scriptures to those whose understanding is darkened, angels of God will be close beside him to impress the heart of the one who is athirst for the water of life. The

4. BELIEVE THE GOSPEL
a.

August 26

What will be the effect of the gospel on those who by faith accept the provision made for salvation? Luke 5:32; 24:47; 2 Corinthians 7:9, 10.

b. How does Scripture explain the type of belief that we need in order to be saved? James 2:1420; 1 John 2:4, 5; 3:24.

There are those who profess holiness, who declare that they are wholly the Lords, who claim a right to the promises of God, while refusing to render obedience to His commandments. These transgressors of the law claim everything that is promised to the children of God; but this is presumption on their part, for John tells us that true love for God will be revealed in obedience to all His commandments. The Acts of the Apostles, pp. 562, 563. The faith in Christ that saves the soul is not what it is represented to be by many. Believe, believe, is their cry; only believe in Christ, and you will be saved. It is all you have to do. While true faith trusts wholly in Christ for salvation, it will lead to perfect conformity to the law of God. Faith is manifested by works.Faith
and Works, p. 52.

Sinners, however wicked, abominable, and corrupt, by faith in [Jesus] will be purified, made clean, through the doing of His word. The truth will be a savor of life unto life to those who believe, but the same truth will be to the unbeliever a savor of death unto death. Those who reject Christ and refuse to believe the truth will be filled with bitterness against those who accept Jesus as a personal Saviour. But those who receive Christ are melted and subdued by the manifestation of His love in His humiliation, suffering, and death in their behalf. The Review and Herald, July 24, 1894. There is no salvation without repentance. No impenitent sinner can believe with his heart unto righteousness. Repentance is described by Paul as a godly sorrow for sin, that worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of (2 Corinthians 7:10). This repentance has in it nothing of the nature of merit, but it prepares the heart for the acceptance of Christ as the only Saviour, the only hope of the lost sinner.Faith and Works, p. 99.

5. THE POWER OF THE GOSPEL
a.

August 27

What is the Bible definition of the gospel, the good news of salvation? Romans 1:16, 17; 1 Corinthians 15:14; 2 Timothy 1:8. How does genuine acceptance of the gospel affect people?

Hanging upon the cross Christ was the gospel. Now we have a message, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29). Will not our church members keep their eyes fixed on a crucified and risen Saviour, in whom their hopes of eternal life are centered? This is our message, our argument, our doctrine, our warning to the impenitent, our encouragement for the sorrowing, the hope for every believer. If we can awaken an interest in mens minds that will cause them to fix their eyes on Christ, we may step aside, and ask them only to continue to fix their eyes upon the Lamb of God. They thus receive their lesson. Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. He whose eyes are fixed on Jesus will leave all. He will die to selfishness. He will believe in all the Word of God, which is so gloriously and wonderfully exalted in Christ.Manuscript Releases, vol. 21, p. 37. As Christs witnesses we are to bear testimony to its power. We are to bring the afflicted ones to the Saviour. His transforming grace and miracle-working power will win many souls to the truth. His healing power, united with the gospel message, will bring success in emergencies. The Holy Spirit will work upon hearts, and we shall see the salvation of God. In a special sense the healing of the sick is our work.Evangelism, p. 544.
b. From where is the power of the gospel derived? Who will be imbued with that power? Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8; Joel 2:2830.

Sing unto the Lord a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. . . . Let them give glory unto the Lord, and declare his praise in the islands (Isaiah 42:10, 12). Samoa (formerly known as Western Samoa) is approximately 3,500 kilometer south of Hawaii in the South Pacific Ocean. Samoa consists of two major islands and seven smaller ones giving an area of 2,934 square kilometers. These tropical islands have a population of approximately 217,000 and gained national independence in the 1960s. The predominant religions of the country are Congregationalist, Catholic, and Methodist. The message of reformation came to this country in the late 1990s. As the work progressed, the Reform Movement was registered in January 2001. Currently the believers there are meeting in a building on private land but wish to raise a house of worship to be a beacon of light in this corner of the Lords vineyard. The brethren and sisters have limited finances and need your support to make this possible. We ask you to consider the needs of Gods work in this country and assist this project with your prayers and generous financial help. May God richly bless you. Christian Temperance
Every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible (1 Corinthians 9:25).

1. TEMPERANCE: A BIBLICAL DOCTRINE
a.

August 30

What is one attribute of the fruit of the Holy Spirit? Galatians 5:22, 23; 2 Peter 1:5, 6. What was one of the points that Paul presented to Felix? Acts 24:25. Is temperance important for us today?

Temperance in all things of this life is to be taught and practiced. Temperance in eating, drinking, sleeping, and dressing is one of the grand principles of the religious life.Child Guidance, p. 394. We are to practice temperance in all things. If we honor the Lord by acting our part, He will on His part preserve our health. We should have a sensible control of all our organs. By practicing temperance in eating, in drinking, in dressing, in labor, and in all things, we can do for ourselves what no physician can do for us.Ibid., p. 397.
b. What is the will of God regarding our physical bodies? 3 John 2; Jeremiah 33:6. What was Daniels decision regarding eating and drinkingand with what result? Daniel 1:8, 11, 12, 15, 1820.

The case of Daniel shows us, that, through religious principle, young men may triumph over the lust of the flesh and remain true to Gods requirements, even though it cost them a great sacrifice.

2. THE ORIGINAL DIET
a.

August 31

What was originally the diet given to Adam and Eve and to all animals? Genesis 1:29, 30; 2:9. After the Fall, what was added to the diet of humans? Genesis 3:18.

b. What is the appropriate diet for human beings today, and what should be avoided? Psalm 104:14.

Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet. The
Ministry of Healing, p. 296.

Reason, instead of being the ruler, has come to be the slave of appetite to an alarming extent. An increasing desire for rich food has been indulged, until it has become the fashion to crowd all the delicacies possible into the stomach. Especially at parties of pleasure is the appetite indulged with but little restraint. Rich dinners and late suppers are served, consisting of highly seasoned meats, with rich sauces, cakes, pies, ices, tea, coffee, etc. No wonder that, with such a diet, people have sallow complexions, and suffer untold agonies from dyspepsia.Counsels on Diet and Foods, p. 149. Almonds are preferable to peanuts, but peanuts in limited quantities may be used in connection with grains to make nourishing food which can be cared for by the digestive organs. But every soul must experiment for himself.Manuscript Releases, vol. 21, p. 285.

Not all foods wholesome in themselves are equally suited to our needs under all circumstances. Care should be taken in the selection of food. Our diet should be suited to the season, to the climate in which we live, and to the occupation we follow. Some foods that are adapted for use at one season or in one climate are not suited to another. So there are different foods best suited for persons in different occupations. Often food that can be used with benefit by those engaged in hard physical labor is unsuitable for persons of sedentary pursuits or intense mental application. God has given us an ample variety of healthful foods, and each person should choose from it the things that experience and sound judgment prove to be best suited to his own necessities.Child Guidance, p. 386.

3. FLESH AS FOOD
a.

September 1

After the Flood there was a temporary change in the diet of humans. What was added to their food, and with what restrictions? Genesis 9:3, 4; 7:2; Leviticus 3:17.

God gave man no permission to eat animal food until after the flood. Everything had been destroyed upon which man could subsist, and therefore the Lord in their necessity gave Noah permission to eat of the clean animals which he had taken with him into the ark. But animal food was not the most healthful article of food for man. . . . After the flood the people ate largely of animal food. God saw that the ways of man were corrupt, and that he was disposed to exalt himself proudly against his Creator and to follow the inclinations of his own heart. And He permitted that long-lived race to eat animal food to shorten their sinful lives. Soon after the flood the race began to rapidly decrease in size, and in length of years.Counsels on Diet
and Foods, p. 373.

b. When God wished to withdraw flesh food from ancient Israel, how did the people react? Numbers 11:46; 21:5. Why did the Lord comply with their desire, and what was the result? Ezekiel 14:4; Numbers 11:3133; 1 Corinthians 10:6.

The Lord intends to bring His people back to live upon simple fruits, vegetables, and grains. He led the children of Israel into the wilderness, where they could not get a flesh diet; and He gave them the bread of heaven. Man did eat angels food (Psalm 78:25). But they craved the fleshpots of Egypt, and mourned and cried for flesh, notwithstanding that the Lord had promised them that if they would submit to His will He would carry them into the land of Canaan and establish them there, a pure, holy, happy people, and there should not be a feeble one in all their tribes; for He would take away all sickness from among them.Medical Ministry, p. 277. God is trying to lead us back, step by step, to His original designthat man should subsist upon the natural products of the earth. Among those who are waiting for the coming of the Lord, meat eating will eventually be done away; flesh will cease to form a part of their diet. We should ever keep this end in view, and endeavor to work steadily toward it.Counsels on Health, p. 450.

The Ministry of Healing, pp. 345, 346.

Look at the breweries planted all over the land, to supply to the public that which is a deadly evil. . . . What a curse is the liquor to the man who enters [the drinking house] and drinks! The traveller enters the public house with his reason, walking uprightly; but look at him as he leaves; the lustre is gone from his eye, his reason is paralyzed, and he reels to and fro like a ship at sea.The Bible Echo, January 22, 1894.
b. What express command was given to Aaron and his sons, to Manoah and his wife, and to Zechariah? Leviticus 10:810; Judges 13:3, 4, 13, 14; Luke 1:1215.

The use of spirituous liquors has the effect to weaken the body, confuse the mind, and debase the morals. It prevents men from realizing the sacredness of holy things or the binding force of Gods requirements. All who occupied positions of sacred responsibility were to be men of strict temperance, that their minds might be clear to discriminate between right and wrong, that they might possess firmness of principle, and wisdom to administer justice and to show mercy.Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 362.

With the awful results of indulgence in intoxicating drink before us, how is it that any man or woman who claims to believe in the word of God, can venture to touch, taste, or handle wine or strong drink? Such a practice is certainly out of harmony with their professed faith.Temperance, p. 42. Governors, senators, representatives, judges, men who enact and administer a nations laws, men who hold in their hands the lives, the fair fame, the possessions of their fellows, should be men of strict temperance. Only thus can their minds be clear to discriminate between right and wrong. Only thus can they possess firmness of principle, and wisdom to administer justice and to show mercy. But how does the record stand? How many of these men have their minds beclouded, their sense of right and wrong confused, by strong drink! How many are the oppressive laws enacted, how many the innocent persons condemned to death, through the injustice of drinking lawmakers, witnesses, jurors, lawyers, and even judges!

5. A HEALTHY MIND IN A HEALTHY BODY
a.

September 3

What do the Holy Scriptures say about our physical bodies? 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17; 6:19, 20.

It is not possible for us to glorify God while living in violation of the laws of life. The heart cannot possibly maintain consecration to God while lustful appetite is indulged. A diseased body and disordered intellect, because of continual indulgence in hurtful lust, make sanctification of the body and spirit impossible. The apostle understood the importance of the healthful conditions of the body for the successful perfection of Christian character.Counsels on Diet

God desires that we shall have a care, a regard, and an appreciation for our bodiesthe temple of the Holy Spirit.Healthful
Living, p. 305.

b. In order to preserve our physical bodies healthy, what counsel is given us? 1 Corinthians 9:2427; 10:31; 1 Thessalonians 5:23.

All are required to do what they can to preserve healthy bodies and sound minds. If they will gratify a gross appetite, and by so doing blunt their sensibilities, and becloud their perceptive faculties so that they cannot appreciate the exalted character of God, or delight in the study of His word, they may be assured that God will not accept their unworthy offering any sooner than that of Cain.Counsels on Diet and

Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him (James 5:14, 15).

a.

September 6

What express command did God give to His people Israel to keep them free from disease? Exodus 15:26.

Christ gave to Israel definite instruction in regard to their habits of life, and He assured them, The Lord will take away from thee all sickness (Deuteronomy 7:15). When they fulfilled the conditions, the promise was verified to them. The Desire of Ages, p. 824.
b. What is always associated with sickness? Psalm 103:3; John 5:14.

We reap that which we sow. Satan . . . caused man to charge upon God the suffering which is but the sure result of the transgression of physical law.The Christian Educator, October 1, 1898. People have seldom accredited their sufferings to the true causetheir own wrong course of action. They have indulged in intemperance in eating, and made a god of their appetite. In all their habits they have manifested a recklessness in regard to health and life; and when, as the result, sickness has come upon them they have made themselves believe that God was the author of it, when their own wrong course of action has brought the sure result.Counsels on

2. STEPS IN RECOVERY
a.

September 7

Where do most diseases begin? Proverbs 23:7. What steps should be taken in order to recover from maladies? Matthew 9:26.

Sickness of the mind prevails everywhere. Nine tenths of the diseases from which men suffer have their foundation here. Perhaps some living home trouble is, like a canker, eating to the very soul and weakening the life forces. Remorse for sin sometimes undermines the constitution and unbalances the mind.Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 444. The condition of the mind affects the health of the physical system. If the mind is free and happy, from a consciousness of right doing and a sense of satisfaction in causing happiness to others, it creates a cheerfulness that will react upon the whole system, causing a freer circulation of the blood and a toning up of the entire body.
Counsels of Health, p. 28.

A great deal of the sickness which afflicts humanity has its origin in the mind, and can only be cured by restoring the mind to health. There are very many more than we imagine who are sick mentally.
Ibid., p. 349.

Disease is sometimes produced, and is often greatly aggravated, by the imagination. Many are lifelong invalids who might be well if they only thought so. Many imagine that every slight exposure will cause illness, and the evil effect is produced because it is expected. Many die from disease, the cause of which is wholly imaginary.Ibid., p. 344.
b. Who is the only healer, and what did He say to those that were healed? Jeremiah 17:14; Matthew 4:24; 14:14; John 5:1214.

One of the great objects of our Health Institute is to direct sinsick souls to the Great Physician, the true healing Fountain, and call their attention to the necessity of reform from a religious standpoint, that they no longer violate the law of God by sinful indulgences. If the moral sensibilities of invalids can be aroused and they see that they are sinning against their Creator by bringing sickness upon themselves and by the indulgence of appetite and debasing passions, when they leave the Health Institute they will not leave their principles behind, but will take them with them and be genuine health reformers at home.Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 170.

3. NATURAL REMEDIES
a.

September 8

When king Hezekiah was sick, what natural remedy was applied on his ulcers? 2 Kings 20:7. What remedies does God approve?

One word from God, one touch of the divine finger, would have cured Hezekiah instantly, but special directions were given to take a fig and lay it upon the affected part, and Hezekiah was raised to life. In everything we need to move along the line of Gods providence.
Counsels on Health, pp. 381, 382.

Gods remedies are the simple agencies of nature that will not tax or debilitate the system through their powerful properties. Pure air and water, cleanliness, a proper diet, purity of life, and a firm trust in God are remedies for the want of which thousands are dying; yet these remedies are going out of date because their skillful use requires work that the people do not appreciate. Fresh air, exercise, pure water, and clean, sweet premises are within the reach of all with but little expense, but drugs are expensive, both in the outlay of means and in the effect produced upon the system.Testimonies, vol. 5, p. 443.
b. What is the plan of God for the use of medicinal plants on the earth made new? Ezekiel 47:12 (last part); Revelation 22:2 (last part). While we are on this earth, what benefits can we obtain from such plants and other natural remedies?

The Lord has provided antidotes for diseases in simple plants, and these can be used by faith, with no denial of faith; for by using the blessings provided by God for our benefit we are cooperating with Him. He can use water and sunshine and the herbs which He has caused to grow, in healing maladies brought on by indiscretion or accident. We do not manifest a lack of faith when we ask God to bless His remedies.Selected Messages, bk. 2, p. 289.

Physicians are to act in Christs stead. . . . Christs plans are to be carried out more definitely by the Christian physician.Medical Ministry,

4. THE POWER OF PRAYER
a.

September 9

When someone becomes sick, what should he or she do according to Bible instruction? James 5:14, 15.

The work of our sanitariums would be far more successful if the physicians would read the word more earnestly and put its precepts into practice, if they would preach the kingdom of God and pray for the healing grace of Christ to come upon the afflicted.Medical
Ministry, p. 29.

b. What difference should we bear in mind when praying for the sick? What thought should our prayers include? 1 John 5:1416.

In prayer for the sick it should be remembered that we know not what we should pray for as we ought (Romans 8:26). We do not know whether the blessing we desire will be best or not. Therefore our prayers should include this thought: Lord, thou knowest every secret of the soul. Thou art acquainted with these persons. Jesus, their Advocate, gave His life for them. His love for them is greater than ours can possibly be. If, therefore, it is for Thy glory and the good of the afflicted ones, we ask, in the name of Jesus, that they may be restored to health. If it be not Thy will that they may be restored, we ask that Thy grace may comfort and Thy presence sustain them in their sufferings. The Ministry of Healing, pp. 229, 230. My husband and I once attended a meeting where our sympathies were enlisted for a brother who was a great sufferer with the phthisic. He was pale and emaciated. He requested the prayers of the people of God. . . . He importuned us so earnestly that we decided to consider his case and present it before the Lord that night; and if the way seemed clear, we would comply with his request. . . . In a dream the case of that man was clearly presented. His course from his childhood up was shown, and that if we should pray the Lord would not hear us; for he regarded iniquity in his heart. The next morning the man came for us to pray for him. We took him aside and told him we were sorry to be compelled to refuse his request. I related my dream, which he acknowledged was true.

5. HEALTHFUL LIVING
a.

September 10

What is Gods will in regard to our physical bodies? 3 John 2; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; 4:3, 4.

In order for the people of God to be in an acceptable state with Him, where they can glorify Him in their bodies and spirits which are His, they must with interest and zeal deny the gratification of their appetites, and exercise temperance in all things. Then may they comprehend the truth in its beauty and clearness, and carry it out in their lives, and by a judicious, wise, straightforward course give the enemies of our faith no occasion to reproach the cause of truth. God requires all who believe the truth to make special, persevering efforts to place themselves in the best possible condition of bodily health, for a solemn and important work is before us. Health of body and mind is required for this work.Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 619.
b. In order to please God in our bodies, where should our mind be set? Isaiah 26:3, 4; Colossians 3:1, 2. How does this also apply to efforts in medical missionary lines?

The work which is being done in medical missionary lines is the very work which Christ commanded His followers to do. Can you not clearly see that those who are engaged in this work are fulfilling the Saviours commission?Testimonies to Ministers, p. 416. Let little companies go forth to do the work to which Christ appointed His disciples. Let them labor as evangelists, scattering our publications and talking of the truth to those they meet. Let them pray for the sick, ministering to their necessities, not with drugs, but with natures remedies.Christian Service, p. 128.

Our Duty Toward the Sufferers

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world (James 1:27).

When the nations are gathered before [Christ sitting upon His glorious throne], there will be but two classes, and their eternal destiny will be determined by what they have done or have neglected to do for Him in the person of the poor and the suffering. The Desire

1. IDENTIFYING OURSELVES WITH CHRIST
a.

September 13

Describe one of the best ways to identify ourselves with Christ. Matthew 25:3540.

Jesus had told His disciples that they were to be hated of all men, to be persecuted and afflicted. Many would be driven from their homes, and brought to poverty. Many would be in distress through disease and privation. Many would be cast into prison. To all who forsook friends or home for His sake He had promised in this life a hundredfold. Now He assured a special blessing to all who should minister to their brethren. In all who suffer for My name, said Jesus, you are to recognize Me. As you would minister to Me, so you are to minister to them. This is the evidence that you are My disciples.Ibid.,

2. THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD SHINING IN OBSCURITY

What was Christs main occupation while He was in the world? Acts 10:38.

b. How does Christ want to let His light shine through us? Isaiah 58:7, 8, 10; Galatians 6:9, 10; 1 Peter 2:15.

Faithful work is more acceptable to God than the most zealous and thought-to-be holiest worship. It is working together with Christ that is true worship. Prayers, exhortation, and talk are cheap fruits, which are frequently tied on; but fruits that are manifested in good works, in caring for the needy, the fatherless, and widows, are genuine fruits, and grow naturally upon a good tree. Pure religion and undefiled before the Father is this: To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world (James 1:27). Good deeds are the fruit that Christ requires us to bear: kind words, deeds of benevolence, of tender regard for the poor, the needy, the afflicted. When hearts sympathize with hearts burdened with discouragement and grief, when the hand dispenses to the needy, when the naked are clothed, the stranger made welcome to a seat in your parlor and a place in your heart, angels are coming very near, and an answering strain is responded to in heaven. Every act of justice, mercy, and benevolence makes melody in heaven. The Father from His throne beholds those who do these acts of mercy, and numbers them with His most precious treasures. And they shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels (Malachi 3:17). Every merciful act to the needy, the suffering, is regarded as though done to Jesus. When you succor the poor, sympathize with the afflicted and oppressed, and befriend the orphan, you bring yourselves into a closer relationship to Jesus.Testimonies, vol. 2, pp. 24, 25.
c. How will the Lord bless those who practice pure and undefiled religion? Isaiah 58:11.

3. IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES TO BE RECOGNIZED

a. How should we admonish those who loaf away their time? 2 Thessalonians 3:1015.

The word of God declares that if a man will not work, neither shall he eat. (2 Thessalonians 3:10.) The Lord does not require the hard-working man to support others in idleness. With many there is a waste of time, a lack of effort, which brings to poverty and want. If these faults are not corrected by those who indulge them, all that might be done in their behalf would be like putting treasure into a bag with holes. Yet there is an unavoidable poverty, and we are to manifest tenderness and compassion toward those who are unfortunate.Christs Object Lessons, p. 247. No person, whether rich or poor, can glorify God by a life of indolence. All the capital that many poor men have is time and physical strength, and this is frequently wasted in love of ease and in careless indolence so that they have nothing to bring to their Lord in tithes and in offerings. If Christian men lack wisdom to labor to the best account and to make a judicious appropriation of their physical and mental powers, they should have meekness and lowliness of mind to receive advice and counsel of their brethren, that their better judgment may supply their own deficiencies. Many poor men who are now content to do nothing for the good of their fellowmen and for the advancement of the cause of God might do much if they would. They are as accountable to God for their capital of physical strength as is the rich man for his capital of money.Testimonies, vol. 3, p. 400.
b. While some need admonition, others actually need help. Explain the difference between pretenders and helpless sufferers. 1 Thessalonians 5:14, 15; Hebrews 13:13.

We may err in making gifts to the poor which are not a blessing to them, leading them to feel that they need not exert themselves and practice economy, for others will not permit them to suffer. We should not give countenance to indolence, or encourage habits of self-gratification by affording means for indulgence. While the worthy poor are not to be neglected, all should be taught, so far as possible, to help themselves.Historical Sketches, p. 293.

4. OUR GREAT NEED: PRACTICAL RELIGION
a.

September 16

What does the Bible say about those who are more interested in theoretical knowledge than in practical religion? James 2:1417; 1 John 3:17, 18.

b. How does the Lord regard zealous formalism in the absence of practical religion? Isaiah 58:2, 3, 5.

[Isaiah 58:14 quoted.] . . . The house of Jacob, at the time this warning was given to Isaiah, appeared to be a very zealous people, seeking God daily, and delighting to know His ways; but in reality they were filled with presumptuous self-confidence. They were not walking in the truth. Goodness, mercy, and love were not practiced. While presenting an appearance of sorrow for their sins, they were cherishing pride and avarice. At the very time when they were showing such outward humiliation, they would exact hard labor from those under them or in their employ. They placed a high estimate on all the good that they had done, but a very low estimate on the services of others. They despised and oppressed the poor. And their fasting only gave them a higher opinion of their own goodness. There are sins of this same character among us today, and they bring the rebuke of God upon His church. Wherever such sins are found, seasons of fasting and prayer are indeed necessary; but they must be accompanied with sincere repentance and decided reformation.
The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. White Comments], vol. 4, pp. 1149, 1150.

c.

What challenge and encouragement comes both to many struggling under poverty and those who seek to minister to them in the best way possible? Psalm 112:59.

There are multitudes of poor families for whom no better missionary work could be done than to assist them in settling on the land and in learning how to make it yield them a livelihood. The
Ministry of Healing, p. 192.

As you open your door to Christs needy and suffering ones, you are welcoming unseen angels. You invite the companionship of heavenly beings. They bring a sacred atmosphere of joy and peace. They come with praises upon their lips, and an answering strain is heard in heaven. Every deed of mercy makes music there. 5. CHRIST IDENTIFIES HIMSELF WITH THE SUFFERERS

How does Christ identify Himself with His suffering people? What will He say to those who have neglected them? Matthew 25:4145.

To the rich, God has given wealth that they may relieve and comfort His suffering children; but too often they are indifferent to the wants of others. They feel themselves superior to their poor brethren. They do not put themselves in the poor mans place. They do not understand the temptations and struggles of the poor, and mercy dies out of their hearts. The Desire of Ages, p. 639.
b. What experience, narrated by Sister E. G. White, should arouse our responsibility?

I am acquainted with persons who make a high profession, whose hearts are so encased in self-love and selfishness that they cannot appreciate what I am writing [in helping the needy poor, the orphan and the fatherless]. They have all their lives thought and lived only for self. To make a sacrifice to do others good, to disadvantage themselves to advantage others, is out of the question with them. They have not the least idea that God requires this of them. Self is their idol.Testimonies, vol. 2, p. 26.
c. What will Christ say to those who have opened their hearts and hands to Him in the person of the poor and the suffering? Matthew 25:34.

1. THE SEAL
a.

September 20

What is the seal or sign of the living God that will be placed upon the foreheads of Gods servants? Ezekiel 20:12, 20; Revelation 7:2, 3. Are seal and sign to be understood as synonymous expressions? Romans 4:11.

The sign, or seal, of God is revealed in the observance of the seventh-day Sabbath, the Lords memorial of creation.Testimonies,
vol. 8, p. 117.

The Sabbath of the fourth commandment is the seal of the living God. It points to God as the Creator, and is the sign of His rightful authority over the beings He has made. Those who obey this law will bear the seal of God, for He has set apart this day as a sign of loyalty between Himself and His people. The Signs of the Times, March 22, 1910.
b. Why is the seventh-day Sabbath the seal of Gods law? To what event does the Sabbath point? Exodus 31:1417.

The seal of Gods law is found in the fourth commandment. This only, of all the ten, brings to view both the name and the title of the Lawgiver. It declares Him to be the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and thus shows His claim to reverence and worship above all others. The Great Controversy, p. 452. 2. THE FOUR WINDS
a.

September 21

What vision was given to John the Revelator about a work that should take place under the sixth seal? Revelation 7:1. What do the winds represent? Jeremiah 51:1, 2; Daniel 7:2.

Why is it that all this wickedness does not break forth in decided violence against righteousness and truth? It is because the four angels are holding the four winds, that they shall not blow upon the earth. But human passions are reaching a high pass, and the Spirit of the Lord is being withdrawn from the earth. In Heavenly Places, p. 96. John sees the elements of natureearthquake, tempest, and political striferepresented as being held by four angels. These winds are under control until God gives the word to let them go. There is the safety of Gods church.Testimonies to Ministers, p. 444. The accidents by land and by sea; the loss of life, steadily increasing, by storm, by tempest, by railroad disaster, by conflagration; the terrible floods, the earthquakes, and the winds will be the stirring up of the nations to one deadly combat, while the angels hold the four winds, forbidding the terrible power of Satan to be exercised in its fury until the servants of God are sealed in their foreheads.
My Life Today, p. 308.

Men cannot discern the sentinel angels restraining the four winds that they shall not blow until the servants of God are sealed; but when God shall bid His angels loose the winds, there will be such a scene of strife as no pen can picture.Testimonies, vol. 6, p. 408.
b. How long will the angels hold back the winds? Revelation 7:2, 3.

I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues.Early Writings, p. 36. Satan will then plunge the inhabitants of the earth into one great, final trouble. As the angels of God cease to hold in check the fierce winds of human passion, all the elements of strife will be let loose. The whole world will be involved in ruin more terrible than that which came upon Jerusalem of old.The Great Controversy, p. 614.

3. THE SEALING TIME
a.

September 22

In the early days of the great Advent Movement, what did they understand to be the present truth? 2 Peter 1:12.

b. What has Satan been doing since 1844, when the sealing work commenced? 1 Peter 5:8; Revelation 12:12. What should the faithful ones do? Luke 21:34, 36.

Those that overcome the world, the flesh, and the devil, will be the favored ones who shall receive the seal of the living God. Those whose hands are not clean, whose hearts are not pure, will not have the seal of the living God. Those who are planning sin and acting it will be passed by. Only those who, in their attitude before God, are filling the position of those who are repenting and confessing their sins in the great antitypical day of atonement, will be recognized and marked as worthy of Gods protection.Testimonies to Ministers, p. 445.
c. Where does Christ also have true followers who have not been reached by the present truth? Revelation 18:4. How should we approach them?

God has jewels in all the churches, and it is not for us to make sweeping denunciation of the professed religious world, but in humility and love, present to all the truth as it is in Jesus. Let men see piety and devotion, let them behold Christlikeness of character, and they will be drawn to the truth. He who loves God supremely and his neighbor as himself will be a light in the world. Those who have a knowledge of the truth are to communicate the same. They are to lift up Jesus, the worlds Redeemer; they are to hold forth the Word of life. The SDA Bible Commentary [E. G. Satan is now using every device in this sealing time to keep the minds of Gods people from the present truth and to cause them to waver. I saw a covering that God was drawing over His people to protect them in the time of trouble; and every soul that was decided on the truth and was pure in heart was to be covered with the covering of the Almighty.Early Writings, p. 43. 4. THE SEALING ANGEL
a.

September 23

Against what does the third angel of Revelation 14 warn the people, and what will be the result of his message? Revelation 14:9, 10, 12; 15:2.

The third angel closes his message thus: Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus (Revelation 14:12). As he repeated these words, he pointed to the heavenly sanctuary. The minds of all who embrace this message are directed to the most holy place, where Jesus stands before the ark, making His final intercession for all those for whom mercy still lingers and for those who have ignorantly broken the law of God. This atonement is made for the righteous dead as well as for the righteous living.Early Writings, p. 254. In the issue of the contest all Christendom will be divided into two great classesthose who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and those who worship the beast and his image and receive his mark. The Great Controversy, p. 450.
b. What did John see coming up from the east, what did he have in his hands, and who is he? Revelation 7:2 (first part).

A parchment was placed in the [third] angels hand, and as he descended to the earth in power and majesty, he proclaimed a fearful warning, with the most terrible threatening ever borne to man. This message was designed to put the children of God upon their guard, by showing them the hour of temptation and anguish that was before them. Said the angel, They will be brought into close combat with the beast and his image. Their only hope of eternal life is to remain steadfast.Early Writings, p. 254. The third angels message is to be regarded as of the highest importance. It is a life and death question. The SDA Bible Commentary
[E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 980.

Satan is making desperate efforts to make himself god, to speak and act like God, to appear as one who has a right to control the consciences of men.Ibid., p. 981. When the law of God is most derided and brought into the most contempt, then it is time for every true follower of Christ, for those whose hearts have been given to God, and who are fixed to obey God, to stand unflinchingly for the faith once delivered to the saints.

5. THE NUMBER OF THE SEALED
a.

September 24

As a result of the work of the third angel, what company did John see, and how many are they? Revelation 7:4.

b. What should be our concern today in regard to the sealing work? Will any be saved having the knowledge of the third angels message without having the seal of the living God? Ezekiel 9:46; Luke 13:24.

Only those who receive the seal of the living God will have the passport through the gates of the Holy City. The SDA Bible Commentary
[E. G. White Comments], vol. 7, p. 970.

All self-righteousness must be given up, for we have no righteousness of ourselves. It is the gift of God; therefore we should not be exalted, or by any means pretentious, for it is an offence to God. What have we that we have not received?
