Welcome to the 2009 Power New York Events!

What started in 2006, has grown into a real movement for positive change in the health and wellness of communities most at risk for a Stroke. With over 387,689 individuals who have personally committed to ending stroke in their family and over 14,610 Ambassadors who are championing the lifesaving message of recognizing stroke risk, responding appropriately to the symptoms, and reducing risks for a stroke; Power to End Stroke is making a real di erence. The awareness raised through the Power to End Stroke Campaign inspired 59% of participants to have their blood pressure checked, 50% started walking, exercising or became more physically active, 52% had their cholesterol checked and 38% lost weight. In the struggle to achieve health equity, the American Heart Association | American Stroke Association seeks to be the collaborator of choice for our partners; and the recognized thought leaders and change agents regarding eliminating cardiovascular health disparities. As a child, I remember reading the words of Frederick Douglass: "there is no progress without struggle." That immortal wisdom came from the yearning soul of a man desperate to see change in society. Today, Founders have adopted these words as a guiding reference that system level change is complex, costly and sometimes convoluted. However, it is possible! The Power to End Stroke Campaign represents that possibility. The Power is Yours! The Power to End Strokes strongest asset has always been that it belongs to the People. Should you need additional information, please dont hesitate to contact me at 212.878.5911. I remain,

Francys Johnson Vice President, Cultural Health Initiatives

Welcome from Terri Kennedy

Help us save lives. Someone in your life will be or has been a ected by heart disease and/or stroke. Both are life-and-death emergencies and can have fatal consequences, as well as be devastating to the family. I've lost many loved ones to cardiovascular disease. My paternal grandfather, two aunts and two uncles died of heart disease and two other uncles recently had bypass surgery. My maternal grandfather died of a stroke. My dad, Dr. James Scott Kennedy, was known around the world as a pioneer in Communications and Theatre, and was called Mr. Speech in the 1950s. However, for the last two months of his life, he could not speak. It was painful to watch and, I'm sure, for him to experience. With more knowledge of the symptoms of stroke that are not as well-known, such as confusion and loss of balance, we may have been able to prevent or delay his decline. Coronary heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States. Stroke is the No. 3 cause of death and a leading cause of serious disability. African Americans are at increased risk due to high rates of factors such as family history, diabetes and high blood pressure. That's why it's so important to reduce your risk factors, know the warning signs, and know how to respond quickly and properly if warning signs occur. I enjoy working with the American Stroke Association because their message is one of empowerment which is the work I do with my company, Power Living Enterprises. Its really about helping people live their most ful lled lives. The American Stroke Association recognizes that our health crisis is not about one single disease. To approach this challenge as a community we need a collaborative whole approach to healthy living. This is why together were o ering programs about nutrition, physical activity, as well as mental health, stress management, oral health, disease management and prevention.
