The population in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Region is roughly 105.2 million peoplethis is 32 per cent of the combined populations of Canada and the US. The Great Lakes Basin is home to 98 per cent of Ontarios population. 10 of Canadas 20 largest cities reside in the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Region.

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Region (GLSLR) is comprised of two provinces, eight states, over forty first nations communities, and numerous Canadian and US regional authorities. The Great Lakes are a chain of 5 large freshwater lakes which form the largest lake group in the worldcovering an area of 95,000 square miles. The combined shoreline of the Great Lakes is equal to about 45 per cent of the earths circumference. The St. Lawrence River permits the passage of deep-water ships between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. The St. Lawrence River includes a series of man-made canals, locks and dams, and is considered one of the most vital shipping routes on the planet.

If the Great Lakes St. Lawrence Region was its own country, it would rank among the worlds largest economies. By some estimates, the GDP of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Economy is $4.4 trillion or 31 per cent of combined GDP in Canada and the US.` There are around 47.2 million people employed in the region. The Great Lakes Basin represents 40 per cent of Canadas economic activity. The Great Lakes support 25 per cent of Canadas agricultural capacity. The Great Lakes Region is home to 50 per cent of Canadian and 20 per cent of US manufacturing. Each year, the Great Lakes contribute $180 billion to CanadaUS trade. The Great Lakes support 45 per cent of Canadas industrial capacity. The Great Lakes is directly linked to 1.5 million US jobs. The Great Lakes is directly linked to $62 billion in annual US wages.

Environment/Water
40 per cent of Canadas boundary with the US is composed of water. The Great Lakes contains over 350 species of fish. The Great Lakes provide drinking water for over 40 million people and 3 out of 4 Ontarians. The Great Lakes contain 84 per cent of North Americas fresh water supply. The Great Lakes contain 18 per cent of the worlds surface fresh water stores. Only 1 per cent of the waters of the Great Lakes are renewed each year by snow melt and rain.
