Students Taking Monday Classes...

Because of the Independence Day holiday on Monday, July 4th, we have scheduled a special class session on Saturday, July 9th from 9am-1pm for the first meeting of Monday classes. The one exception to this will be Andrew Johnsons B271 Professional Communications class which will meet on Saturday, July 16th from 9-1pm. It is imperative that you attend on this day since we have a limited number of Mondays during the summer quarter and missing this day would result in being behind schedule. Monday classes will resume as scheduled starting July 11th.

Independence Day Event!

Mark your calendars: The Romeoville/Joliet Campus is proud to again sponsor the Joliet July 4 fireworks at Memorial Stadium in Joliet. The event is on Monday, July 4 with gates opening at 6:00 PM, tributes at 8:00 PM, and fireworks at dusk. Admissions Manager Tasha Menard will be singing the national anthem before an estimated crowd of 10,000! Our staff will also be on hand to distribute Rasmussen Glow sticks. Bring your friends and family!

Top 5 Time Management Tips for Students

Do you struggle to get everything done that you need to get done? Would you like more hours in your day? If so, perhaps these time management tips will help! 1. Reduce Multitasking. The human brain cannot really do two things at once. Instead, it switches between tasks rapidly and that switch comes with a cost. For example, if you are writing a paper and reading emails as they pop up, the cost of switching back and forth may seem small, but it is big in terms of increased time taken to write the paper (it can take four times as long!), increased stress level, lowered quality of the paper written, and lower quality of attention paid to the emails. The takeaway? When quality and accuracy and efficiency matter, consider doing one thing at a time. Shut your email off when writing papers!

2. Create and Use a To-Do List. We all know we should have a todo list but many of us do not create them, or we do and dont use them. Create one! Use one! It will help you focus. How to get yourself to use one? Share your list with a friend. 3. Prioritize Your To-Do List and Work on High-Priority Items First. A to-do list that is not prioritized is not helpful. Ask yourself, what is the best use of my time today? Follow through accordingly. 4. Eliminate Interruptions. Studies show that workers who are interrupted typically take 20-30 minutes to get back on task. If you can eliminate interruptions while working on important tasks, you will do better at the task, get the task done quicker, and have more time to focus on the child, spouse, or friend who is interrupting. 5. Take Productivity-Enhancing Breaks While Studying. The human brain needs breaks. Plan on taking a break every hour or two. Take a walk or do something that requires motion but limited thinking (Cantor, 2009). Article originally written by Jeneen LaSee-Williamson, Rasmussen Wausau campus librarian.

The Rasmussen Romeoville/Joliet campus library provided the venue for our 2nd Annual Poetry Slam on Tuesday, June 7th. We had a very spirited crowd in the library attend to watch our performers Kris Parkerson, Jane Kintanar, and Abigail Muniz give amazing readings of their heartfelt poetry. Thank you to our judges as well: Kisha Taylor, Tina Mondello, Gina Taleb and Kevin Swartz. A warm congratulations to Abigail who won first prize of a $25 gas card for her poem Lost (reprinted on the right hand side). Were looking forward to next years follow -up!

I am lost. I am trapped. The walls are closing in. There is no escape. I cannot breathe. I cannot think. Im yelling for help. No one can hear me. How do I get out. I question my life. I am stuck. There is no way out. I cannot give up. I sit and cry. There is nothing I can do. I say my goodbye. I close my eyes. I pray to feel no pain. I see a light and there is a hand. A voice I hear. Its so unclear. I try hard to listen. And the voice says baby Im here. I was ready to give up. But it wasnt my time. I open my eyes. A tear rolls down. Then I realize.. It was just a dream.

Trivia Throwdown
The campus Diversity Committee will be having a Trivia Throwdown on Tuesday, July 19th at 3:45pm, in the Community Room. Teams of four are encouraged to join and show off their knowledge from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and today. See page 5 for more information.

The Spotlight
Our Spotlight this month shines on an important campus staff member, Admissions Manager, Gina Taleb. Name: Title: About Me: Hobbies: Gina Taleb Admissions Manager I am from Wisconsin, so yes Im a Cheesehead and a Packers fan! I love traveling to learn about different cultures and try their great food. I have been to 8 countries so far (Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Spain, Jordan, Palestine, and Syria) and planning the next trip! Spending time with my family is one of my favorite things to do as well. I graduated from Alverno College, with a Bachelors Degree in Psychology/Business Management. I love what I do because I get to help students make a positive change in their lives that will last forever! Nothing is better than helping a student find and start their path to success. To be successful, you have to show up, put in the hard work and dont give up, no one said it was easy! Middle Eastern food its all good, and of course sushi. Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily. If a person does not invent herself, she will be invented: those who tower over us omnisciently and laugh will invent us. So to be bodacious enough to invent ourselves is wise. - Maya Angelou I found this great place on CareerBuilder, walked through the doors, and loved it from day 1. I absolutely love watching my Turkish soap operas, keeping up with the fashion world and home decorating. The Notebook, and everything else that Nicholas Sparks writes! Also I cant forget my InStyle magazines! A Bend in the Road by Nicholas Sparks
