Running head: EXTERNAL/INTERNAL FACTORS

Walt Disney Company was found in 1923. Walt Disney Company has strived to remain a leading company by growing globally, advancing in technology, building its knowledge, and skill set in employees. The Walt Disney Company is also a company based on the vision and innovations from the creator Walt Elias Disney. Delegation is affected by globalization, technology, innovation, diversity, and ethics factors allowing employees to take responsibility and accountability for the outcome of their work. Internal and External Affects on the Functions of Management Several internal and external issues can affect an organization. Performing an internal analysis will help find issues and weaknesses within the organization. Internal issues such as incorrect budgeting and a decrease in staff can help determine the financial situation of the organization and if new projects can be implemented. Another issue that internal analysis looks at is whether the current staff is weak or knowledgeable about a project and if training is needed. An internal analysis should be conducted when developing a plan and organizing departments. This will allow management to decide if each plan and goal developed will be the best for the organization or if changes need to be made within the organization to become successful. When an internal analysis is conducted, all departments are studied from management to production. This is a way for monitoring and controlling to be effective (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p.146). External issues are not just with customers but also with all external environmental forces relevant to the organization. Management must be aware of some external factors such as government interference, competitors, and the economy. Management has the responsibility to determine what is important to address and what to take into consideration. Also, management has to plan for the future of the company and the changes that could be implemented. Scenario

Running head: EXTERNAL/INTERNAL FACTORS development, forecasting, and benchmarking are ways management can plan for the future (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 67). Management within the Walt Disney Company is always looking for new and creative ideas that can be developed. Keeping customers interested and wanting to return to Walt Disneys parks new products and services are always designed and implemented into the

consumer products, parks and resorts, and media production. Walt Disney is a company that took chances and branched out into other business opportunities rather than running the organization one particular way. Planning, organizing, controlling, and an impressive leadership quality are factors that have made Walt Disney Company successful. Walt Disney strives to create an optimal employee experience while meeting business needs (Disney.com, 2011). Factors that affect the Functions of Management Globalization, technology, innovation, diversity, and ethics are factors within the Walt Disney Company, which affect the four functions of management. Disneys management has to incorporate various languages, cultures, and technological mediums for every country in the planning stage. Management must conduct a cost and profit analysis for each product project based on cultural markets and currency values. One important challenge that Disney faces is effectively designing a training program that has consistence and designed in different languages for other countries. Organizing for a global company has many challenges. Promotion organization has to be geared in a way that it is appropriate for each country and its culture. Certain products will not sell in every market. Organizing research teams to ensure successful campaigns is crucial. The

technology to implement this research can differ from country to country. Language translations need to be checked by qualified translators to ensure accuracy and maximize sales potential. Leading on a global level requires management training in both cultural values and languages. A leader must be able to help his or her team members understand the tasks at hand in each members primary language. A good leader must be able to connect with his or her team and express assignments to others in a way that each team member can understand the goals for the team. Disney has to be a leader in implementing newer and more cost-efficient products. Hand painting Disney figurines may be a excellent art form, but mass production is required if they wish to have a competitively priced product. Controlling the globalization and technology of Disneys vast product base is no easy task. According to Disney.com, in 1969, Disney released a movie called, The Computer That Wore Tennis Shoes. The movie starred Kurt Russell as a college student who was accidentally electrocuted while working on computers. The computers in the movie were the size of refrigerators with many blinking lights and produced a receipt size ticket with information. Disney has implemented new technology and maintained control of the different types in order to maximize its global wide business. Disney offers innovation and diversity throughout all the different types of theme parks and resorts. Innovation is incorporated into Disneys theme parks and resorts by all the newly designed technology. The ride Its a Small World at Magic Kingdom, offers diversity and innovation by showing different types world landmarks. The ride was created as tribute to the children of the world for the UNICEF pavilion at the 1964/65 Worlds Fair (DIS, 2011). Innovation is defined as the introduction of new goods and services (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 12). Innovation is about possessing the latest technology, how it is used, and how it is

for years but with the upgraded technology and interaction a customer can feel like he or she are involved. In 2010, Disneys theme parks both domestic and internationally was established as the number one them park in the world (Theme Park Insider, 2011). Disney is a widely diverse company offering different types of products and services within the different theme parks and resorts. The attraction, Its a Small World, brings diversity and offers education on world landmarks for individuals to view. A large corporation such as Disney wants to appeal to as many people as possible to provide the best customer service. Disneyland had more than 47 million visitors last year and with approximately half coming in from outside the United States (Disney.com, 2011). Conducting a customer regional analysis allows for management to view the diversity coming to Walt Disneys parks and resorts. Ethics affects the four functions of management the most. Ethics is another major part why Disney as an organization is popular. The ethics of any organization, especially Disney will shape how management will run things. Disney is always in the spotlight and subject to potential bad PR could have a tremendous effect on its success. The plans that Disney implements have to be in the best interest of the customers and the organization. It is essential that the function of monitoring and controlling be implemented daily so that each Disney theme park or resort can remain safe and adventurous for all customers.

Delegation Delegating work is an important job of a manager to give employees a chance to show his or her potential. A manager needs to determine who among the employees will be able to carry

out certain tasks. Delegating is a way for employees to take responsibility and accountability for their actions and show management how they will work to achieve success. When a project is assembled and the planning stage is set delegating taks is a part of the organizing function. Knowing who is going to be in charge of the resources to get the job done (Bateman & Snell, 2009, p. 300). The Walt Disney World organization works hard to give an unparalleled entertainment experience to the customers (Disney.com, 2011). Each of the segments of entertainment has many employees working together to achieve the goals set by management. Delegating responsibility to the employees to make this happen is the only way it will work. Walt Disney is so large it takes thousands of employees working together for the organizations success. Globalization has allowed managers to delegate tasks and projects to employees around the world to achieve the goals of the company. Globalization provides more talented employees to be available to managers. Technology has provided managers with advantages and disadvantages concerning delegation. When or if technology is not working delegation of task and projects must be redistributed to different employees by the manager. Providing new services or goods to customers is a factor that contributes to innovation for a company. Innovation allows a company to continue to grow and develop. Managers have the option to delegate the innovation process to employees and leverage his or her knowledge to develop ideas for new goods or services. Managers must understand the diversity of their employees. Managers can delegate accordingly to achieve the defined goals for the organization once he or she has an understanding of the employees knowledge on certain tasks or projects, his or her beliefs, and cultural differences. Management enforces the ethics the company has established through in the Code of Conduct by delegation of tasks. Managers delegate with the

Running head: EXTERNAL/INTERNAL FACTORS understanding employees will perform to the best of his or her abilities based on the ethics the company has established for employees to follow. Globalization, technology, innovation,

diversity, and ethics are several factors that managers consider when delegating tasks or projects to achieve successful results through others achievements (Bateman & Snell, 2009). Conclusion Internal and external factors affect aspects of the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling functions of management. Incorrect planning on a companys budget can affect how many projects will be scheduled and determine resource allocation incorrectly. In addition, resources need to have the correct skills and knowledge to complete their tasks. If resources are lacking in their skills or knowledge, organization, leading, and controlling are negatively affected. Globalization, technology, innovation, diversity, and ethics are factors that affect management within the Walt Disney Company. The Walt Disney Company leverages their global footprint to strengthen their resources, knowledge of technology, increase their innovation, continue to be a diverse company and strengthen their ethics.
