Christian Baptism
On June 12, 2011 Nikoline Christine Smith Daughter of Katie and Jeffrey Smith and granddaughter of Barbara and Barry Rose was baptized as a child of God and a believer in Jesus Christ. May God continue to bless her life as she grows in Christ. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:5a (NLT)

See You in September?

What a great oldie itll be playing on our radios soon, just like it does every year. And just like every year we know some of you will be going away and we wont see you again until September. And just like every year, things will keep happening here: programs are running, staff gets paid and buildings need to be maintained. We want you to enjoy your time off with your families and hope you are keeping up with your faith life in whatever church serves your summer community. We also want to ask you to keep up as best you can with giving to Jarrettown and are offering to help you enroll for the summer months in our electronic giving programs through Vanco services and PayPal; or add Jarrettown to your regular monthly online bill-pay list. You can visit either website for more information either vancoservices.com or paypal.com to see how many easy ways there are for you to arrange your giving.

Please keep all these families in your prayers.

Pastor Walt's Spiritual Reflection

When Bad Things Happen to Good People

What a clever title! I wish I had thought of it. Actually, it was a rabbi named Harold S. Kushner who used it as the title of his book. Rabbi Kushner and I would agree that not all things can be blamed on God. By no means can we say that the people who have cancer or other bad diseases got them because God decided to get them. Nor can we say that natural disasters are always the result of Gods wrath. I would add that God isnt incapable of giving someone a disease if He thought that was necessary, or whipping up a tsunami if He felt the need. Its just that the vast majority of the time, thats not what He chooses to do. Where the rabbi and I differ is in the role that these bad things can play in a persons life. Here, Im thinking of a passage from the New Testament Letter to the Romans, which says: We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28). Its the called according to his purpose part that the rabbi and I would particularly disagree about, because the Apostle Paul was referring to our being called into a saving relationship specifically with Jesus Christ. And Gods purpose is to bring us into His Kingdom so we can have fellowship with Him forever. So, the big news here is that for the Christian, even the very worst stuff that life has to offer has a function. Its not just a blind, meaningless tragedy. And this includes things like cancer, tsunamis, earthquakes, death, addictions, divorce, job loss, mortgage default, acne on prom night, you name it. All right, you wonder, whats the function?

To understand the function of these things, we need to first point out that they are just thatthings. Now lets look back at that Romans 8:28 passage. We know that all things work together for good Is cancer a thing? Yes. Is job loss a thing? Of course it is. So what the Bible is guaranteeing here is that God will use all of these thingseven horrible thingsto work them into something good in the life of a believer. What the Bible doesnt guarantee us is where and (continued on page 4) 3

(continued from page 3) when we will see the good thing that God has worked this stuff into. We may see it down here in this life, or we may not see it at all until were with Him in Heaven. But thats not the point. The point is that if you are experiencing anythingbe it good or badGod is working in that thing for good in your life. God loves you, has a plan for you, and is absolutely determined to bring about good for you. You might be thinking, Yeah, Pastor Walt, that sounds very nice from a greeting card, pie-in-the-sky point of view. But me, Ive got things going wrong all the time in my life. Its one thing after another. I go from bad to worse every day. It stinks. What good could God be trying to pull out of this garbage? Thats a great question. There are probably a lot of layers of meaning to the garbage youve got going on. And Id have to answer that I have no idea what most of those layers mean. But I think I may have a clue as to one layer of meaning for what youre going through. Most of you know that I used to make my living in the music business as a performer. It was a very insecure livelihood, by any standards. I could be working a show at the Walnut Street Theatre for thirteen weeks, and then have absolutely nothing booked in advance on my calendar. So at the end of the run at the Walnut, I would have no clear idea thereafter about how I would buy groceries or pay the mortgage until the phone rang with some more bookings. Sometimes, as you approached the end of a long run at the theater, your phone rang and your calendar filled up in advance, and that was very comforting. But there were other times when my calendars pages remained mercilessly white and unwritten upon. Id reach the end of the run, and Id have absolutely nothing booked. That was scary. Very scary. Now, I was a believer back then, so I would cry out to God, O Lord, please help me, Lord. Help me, Jesus! And after Id spend a week or three moaning and wailing, the phone would ring and some work would come in. When that happened, boy, was I grateful and relieved! And so, Id thank God profusely, over and over again. Thank You, Jesus! O thank You, Lord! Thank You, Jesus! On and on Id go, thanking Him. After a while, Id hear a still, small voice inside me. And do you know what that voice would say? Whassamatter with you? Ya think Id let you down? Look at My record! Have you missed any meals lately? Well, no, I hadnt missed any meals, and I immediately recognized Whose voice this was. And I would feel bad that I hadnt trusted Him to provide for me the way He had promised that He would. I felt bad that I was thanking Him only after I saw the results, but I wouldnt trust Him before that. I felt bad for an hour or two, and then Id be back to my old, happy-go-lucky self. Time would go by, and lo and behold, the same thing would happen again! End of a long run, no bookings, more wailing and moaning by me, more crying out to God, He would help me, Id fall all over myself thanking Him, He asked me why I didnt trust Him, Id momentarily feel bad, and then Id feel better, and forget about it. This cycle was repeated over the years many, many times. Id be embarrassed to tell you how many. And I always wondered why God allowed me to go through this horrible stress over, and over, and over again. Finally (and far more recently than Id care to admit), I began to see a trend. I said to myself, DUH, maybe Gods trying to teach me to trust Him in advance, when I dont have the solution right in front of me. (continued on page 5) 4

When Bad Things Happen to Good People

(continued from page 3) Now, that may not sound like a big deal to you, but that was a major revelation to me. It was huge. And so, after that, each time the cycle repeated (and it did repeat) I got just a tiny bit better at believing in advance that God was going to see me through, just as He said. Have I now perfected it? Not at all. But Im better than I used to be. The Bible says in 1 Peter 1:6-7, In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, so that the genuineness of your faith being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by firemay be found to result in praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. As a congregation, were going through a tough time. And there might be all sorts of layers of meaning to what were going through. I dont know about all those other layers, but I do know about one. God wants us to learn to trust Him. He hasnt turned on us. He hasnt forgotten us. Hes trying to teach us something bigger and better than we could ever learn if our path remained smooth and unblemished. And Gods got a mighty plan for this congregation. I know it. Going forward, lets devote ourselves to being all that Hes called us to be. He wont let us down.

Park
As we carry out our ministry of walking while wearing our Pray-4-U shirts at Mondauk Park, we continue to receive acknowledgement and thanks for our efforts from people who come up to us there. Last Saturday, we had two encounters almost as soon as we got started. One was a man requesting prayer for healing from a separation that he and his wife were going through. And another was a woman asking for prayer support in the raising of her children. On our final lap, a woman approached us who had stopped by the side of the road next to the park. She asked whether we were associated with the two older gentlemen that she had talked to the week before who wore the same red Pray-4-U shirts. We immediately recognized her description of Jack Weber and Paul Edwards, of course, and told her yes. She informed us that Jack and Paul had prayed with her and her husband, George, that day over his employment situation. While George had not gotten a job yet, she wanted us to know that there had been encouraging interviews and developments in his job search. At that point, George also got out of their car and joined us. As we prayed, we thanked God for these positive signs and asked for His continued blessing for both of them. It's great when God works and we get the privilege to watch Him do it. Dave Filer

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

If the beauty in something is missing, Dottie Swalm will find it. From beautifully framed Masterpieces hanging in her and her familys living rooms to an abandoned garden, Dottie transforms things into enchantment. While recently celebrating her 90th birthday party with friends and family, I had the good fortune of meeting her loved ones. During one conversation her daughter, Susan, shared a long standing family joke about what would happen if any of them stood still too long. Mom will slap a coat of paint on you or she will start decorating you! All three daughters Susan, Carol and Barbara agree on their Moms talent and creativity. Dorothy Jean Rosenberger married Charles Swalm on Oct. 7, 1944 at Logan Methodist Church in Philadelphia. Beside their daughters the union brought on 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Of course, Dotties first love is for her family; however, an absolute close second is her love of Art. As a young girl, Dotties dream was to attend the Moore Institute of Art in Philadelphia. However, the only way this could be achieved was for Dottie to win a scholarship based on her talent. When the day came and she sat anxiously in the auditorium for the announcement, she was so nervous she didnt hear her name when it was called. She was extremely elated when her friend, giving her a nudge, said, Dottie they just called out your name! The Swalms, as well as loving to decorate for all of the different holidays, loved to entertain too. Their home was always filled with seasonal cheer and friends and family loved to come over to enjoy it. Bea Kelly,

Saturday Morning Mens Devotions Continue

Dotties friend of 60 years, shared with me that Dottie and Charlies hospitality spread from their Philadelphia home to the shore. They enjoyed playing Mogul and pinochle around the dining room table. A fun habit that would eventually be picked up by the grandchildren and then they could enjoy joining in the fun. Unfortunately this fun and Dotties creativity needed to be put on hold. Instead of her usual painting, crafting, knitting, decorating, sewing and yes, chopping down trees if they got in her way of her gardens, she needed to help Charlie. She dutifully loved and took care of him as he suffered and declined with Alzheimers disease. He was a patient for l0 years and when he finally returned to God, he and Dottie had reached their 55th wedding anniversary. There are many things that Dottie should be proud of in her 90 years. This includes a prized possession of an award granted to her by the Garden Club Greene Country. She had painted a panel with a scene of a fountain in a garden that gave the appearance of being in the distance. Because of Dotties generous spirit, she reminds me of a life-giving fountain with its energy flowing endlessly only to share with all of those who need its fulfilling nourishment of love. Happy Birthday Dottie! Please join our mens group for fellowship and reflection as we discuss Pauls writings and their relevance to men today. Our schedule continues July 9th and July 23rd, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. in the Friendship Center. This is a BYOC event (Bring Your Own Coffee). No prior reading is required. If you have any questions, contact Dave Filer at 215-887-2018.

SUMMER 2011 UPDATE

School is out for the summer! We finished up the spring with wiffle ball tournaments and a sports night at Mondauk Park. We also spent three weeks in a series called REFUEL, in which we talked about filling the emptiness of our lives with Christ. We have been getting into the Word of God this summer by having Bible studies for JR and SR High students. JR High Bible Study is meeting on Wednesdays while SR High Bible Study is meeting on Thursdays throughout the summer. We continue to work our way through the book of Romans, as we uncover the foundations of our Christian faith. On June 26 29, nine JR High students participated in our JR High Mission Trip to Ocean Grove, New Jersey. We took part in Missions 101; our group teamed up with other youth groups to help the poor. Our students were involved in service projects that included painting churches, cleaning up neighborhood parks, assisting the elderly, etc. Our group also had great fellowship, worship and time for prayer and to hear from the Word of God. Our SR high students will be travelling to New York City, NY July 17 22. Our students will do service projects, spending time in soup kitchens and other community organizations. We will be praying in neighborhoods with the less fortunate and sharing the love of Christ with them. The rest of our AWESOME SUMMER 2011 SCHEDULE is as follows: JR HIGH BIBLE STUDY Wednesdays @ 11AM (July 6, 27; August 3, 10) SR HIGH BIBLE STUDY Thursdays @11AM (July 7, 28; August 4, 11) TUBING DOWN THE DELAWARE TUESDAY, JULY 5 (9:00AM) NYC SR HIGH MISSION TRIP JULY 17 22 OCEAN CITY BEACH DAY/SHANE & SHANE CONCERT TUESDAY, JULY 26 (8:00AM) SIX FLAGS OR ARNOLDS TUESDAY, AUGUST 2 (TBA) OCEAN GROVE BEACH DAY TUESDAY, AUGUST 9 (9:00AM) END OF SUMMER PARTY TUESDAY, AUGUST 16 (TBA) All events at church unless otherwise noted.
