New York Campus Compact Welcomes Three New Members!

Topical Workshops Invitation for NYCC Tenth Anniversary Event


As we indicated in the recent Save The Date alert, the Tenth Anniversary Event for NYCC will be held in conjunction with the first-ever Eastern Regional Campus Compact Conference on October 27-28 in New York City. The two-day event will feature will feature a series of topical workshops before the celebration dinner. Wed like to invite you to share your story with your colleagues as a workshop panelist or presenter. Knowing that involvement with civic engagement has shaped our students, campuses, and communities, we hope to learn from each other not only about compelling programs but also about what has inspired you in your work. Two themes will characterize the workshops: A.) How partnerships have reached traditionally under-served populations, and B.) How the strengths of students as colleagues and of community partners as co-educators advance the civic engagement enterprise. We invite you to 10th Anniversary continued on page 2

Do you want to see your stories and events featured in our newsletter? Everyone involved in the work of civic engagement and community-based education has a story to tell, and New York Campus Compact is eager to help you tell yours. Every Friday, we feature the outstanding work of our member institutions in a Spotlight on Members and news articles in our newsletter. This newsletter is emailed to over 900 college and university presidents, service learning faculty, community service directors and civic engagement offices at our member campuses. The article should be a short announcement of 300-500 words, describing a particular course, program, or project that you want to share with your colleagues. Please indicate if you would like your article featured on the front page as a Spotlight on Members or if we should include it in the body of our newsletter. use the following proposal format to describe an outstanding collaboration related to one of the themes AND to share what that has meant to your personal and professional energy for our work in civic engagement. If you are interested in participating on a panel or making a brief presentation on one of the themes, please use the format below, Sharing Our Stories.. A 1-2 page outline of your session will be sufficient for the selection committee. (You may also submit a proposed panel of presenters which you would like to organize with colleagues.) One hour for concurrent sessions is planned for each of the themes; i.e., A: 4:00 to 5:00 and B: 5:00 to 6:00. Please send your responses to Marianne Ridley at mer12@cornell.edu by Friday August 5. The program planning committee will be in touch by the end of August.

Sharing Our Stories


A.) Community Partnerships with a Special Focus With respect to groups that are traditionally under-served (e.g., prisoners, veterans, seniors, persons with disabilities, immigrants): 1.) How is your institution working with community partners to reach out to individuals who struggle with and/or opportunity? 2.) What is the mutual benefit to the specific group and to your institution? 3.) How has your involvement in this program inspired you professionally and personally? B.) Colleagues in Civic Engagement Working with students as colleagues and community partners as co-educators are hallmarks of true collaboration. 1.) In what specific ways do you/your program utilize the strengths of students (their values as millennials, their skills in social media, etc) OR the strengths of community partners (project planning, needs and assets mapping, presence on campus, etc.)? 2) How has such collaboration advanced your program(s)? Impacted the institution? 3.) How have such relationships been rewarding/inspiring to you personally and professionally? access

CNCS District Days Coming Up


Building off the success of our District Day this spring, Save Service is planing two *District Days on July 20 and August 10*, during the summer Congressional Recesses. Save Service is developing new tools and opportunities for participation, and will be reaching out to many of you with specific asks for support and leadership. Look for more information on this and other campaign developments on the Save Service website in the days and weeks ahead. District Days are when members from the National Service community collectively visit their local congressional offices and express the value of our work to members of congress and their staff. 2011 National Outreach Scholarship Conference (NOSC): *Preconference Workshop for Outreach and Engagement Staff*
Saturday, October 1, 2011 10:00 am-4:00 pm Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center, Michigan State University
Led by peer practitioners with keynote speakers Lorilee Sandmann (University of Georgia) and Randy Stoecker (University of Wisconsin-Madison) This preconference is designed for university staff members who, in roles distinct from those of tenure-track faculty, facilitate and manage ongoing projects, programs, services, research and relationships with community partners. Join us to explore our emerging professional identity as outreach and engagement practitioners and the unique set of strengths and challenges that we share. Because of the overlap in roles, skills and values, boundary spanners who facilitate community-university partnerships on behalf of community organizations are also welcome to attend.
