Lastnight,intheHiltonPavilionBallroom,Saskatchewan PremierBradWallwelcomedhundredsofPNWERdelegatesand officiallyopenedthe2011Summit. ThePremierstressedtheimportanceofPNWERasa firstclassinternationalbodyforfacilitatingintergovernmental relationsandpublicprivatepartnerships.Heexpressedhopes thatPNWERwouldcontinuetoleadonissuesimportanttoboth CanadaandtheUS,specificallymentioningtheObamaHarper BeyondtheBorderproject. ThePremierjokedaboutAdlaiStevensonscomparison thatSaskatchewanislikeTexas,butfriendliertotheU.S. HeencourageddelegatestoattendPNWERsnext

21 LEGISLATORS DISCUSS VARIOUS TRANSPORTATION ISSUES

YesterdaysLegislativeTransportationInstituteservedasaforumforlegislatorstobringattentiontovarious transportationissuestheirjurisdictionsarecurrentlyfacing.Issuesrangedfrominfrastructuremaintenanceand constructioninthemostremoteportionsofAlaskatothedevelopmentoflightrailsystemsinthegreaterVancouver areainBritishColumbia. TheInstitutealsoservedasameansofprovidinglegislatorswithinformationaboutnewtransportationoptions. Harnessingnewmobiletechnologieswillallowforgreatercommunicationbetweenthoseutilizinginfrastructure,aswell asthosedevelopingtransportationsystems.TheSMARTmethodoftransportationprovidedsomeinsightastowhat legislatorscanexpectinthefutureastechnologieschange.Asanexample,thoseutilizingtransportationserviceswillbe abletolookuppreplannedandefficientroutestoreachtheirdestination.Thiswillsavetime,moneyandvaluable resourceswhensharingtransportationwithlightandheavyvehicles. TURNS TOWARD SASKATOON IN 2012

ThePNWERExecutiveCommitteemeetingtookplacefrom1:003:15p.m.yesterdaywithapproximately30 peopleinattendance,halfofwhomwerelegislators. Itcoveredsignificantgroundwhilealsomanagingtofinishearly.OutgoingPresidentMelKnight(AlbertaMLA) congratulatedincomingPresidentMikeSchaufler(OregonStateRepresentative)andthePortlandHostCommitteefor theirrecordsuccessesinbothattendanceandsponsorship. BothwelcomedtheSask.delegation,andLyleStewartinparticular,whothengaveanupdateontheplanning progressforthe2012SaskatoonSummit.Lylespoketotheimmenseresources(intermsofbothcommoditiesand innovation)thatSaskatchewanhastooffertheregion.

ARTS AND CULTURE TOUR

PamBristolandMelissaShepherdfromEnterpriseSaskatchewanparticipatedintheArtsandCulturetour Tuesday.PortlandandOregonhaveworkedhardtobuildtheregionintoanartsandculturedestinationtofurther increasetourism,andcreatetheeconomicspinoffsderivedfromahealthyculturalsector. ThetourincludedavisittothePortlandCentreStageTheatrerestoredfromaheritagebuildingusedasa brewery,andthestateartgallerybuiltfromaformerMasoniclodge.

SASKATCHEWANGREENSCREEN

Thegreenscreenlocatedonthesecondfloorof theHiltonwasabighitattheopeningnight reception.Morethan50peoplelineduptogettheir picturetakenwiththeworldrecordsettingwalleye, orwithtwoRCMPofficers.Thescreenwillbe runningfrom10a.m.to5p.m.
