Cord Blood
A rich source of HEMATOPOIETIC stem cells (HSCs) and MESENCHYMAL stem cells (MSCs) Cord blood stem cells are being used to treat nearly 80 lifethreatening diseases, including emerging areas like cerebral palsy and type 1 diabetes.2

Surrounding Cord Tissue

An additional and abundant source of MSCs With a greater number and variety of stem cells, patients can significantly increase their chances of success in a transplant, and benefit from the potential to treat additional disorders. 3-9
NOTE: Medical treatments using family banked cord tissue are not available today; there is no guarantee that therapies will be developed in the future.

2. Most of these nearly 80 diseases are genetic disorders, which would be treated using cord blood from a sibling. Emerging treatments today are performed with the babys own cord blood.

The collection process is simple. After birth, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, as it would be even if the stem cells were not being saved:

Cord Blood Collection The blood remaining in the umbilical cord is extracted and flows into ViaCords collection bag by gravity until it stops. The actual collection typically takes three to five minutes.
Cord Tissue Collection If you have chosen to preserve the stem cells from the surrounding cord tissue the OB/GYN will place the tissue in the sterile specimen cup provided by ViaCord.
