LBECK
Lbecks Old Town sits on its island, Gothic spires piercing
skyward. Cobbled lanes and winding alleys lead between tall,
steep-gabled buildings of warm red brick. Tiny passageways
enter hidden courtyards quiet, tree-shaded corners lie
moments away from busy shopping streets. Former salt
warehouses and boats with a history line the riverbanks, and
leafy green canal-sidewalks take you instantly into country
mode. There are museums, churches, splendid squares,
secret gardens and surprises around every corner!

THE CITY#THECITY#
The charming Hanseatic city of Lbeck, its
Altstadt (Old Town) a UNESCO world
heritage site, is steeped in history,
literature and captivating architecture.
Punctuated by soaring medieval churches,
and fancy red and black striped brickwork,
Old Town Lbecks eclectic mix of building
styles is best seen on foot. Look up and
youll find an array of gables, verdigris
spires, and towers shaped like perfectly
sharpened pencils - even holes for the
wind to pass through above the Town Hall,
which is one of the oldest, and finest, in
Germany.
Tucked away behind the tall, steep-roofed
and closely-packed houses built by
prosperous merchants, lie tiny workers
cottages in a thread of narrow
passageways. Meander among the `roses
round the door almshouses of
Glockengiesserstrasse, and behind the An
der Obertrave quay, to discover hidden
oases of pretty streets and enchanting
courtyards. Cross bridges or take a river
cruise for endless eye-catching views.
Three Nobel Prize winners have called
Lbeck home. Edvard Munch lived and
painted in the city, and Buxtehude
composed music that can be heard at the
numerous organ concerts in churches
around town.
But old doesnt mean dull - the lively Old
Town attracts residents and visitors alike
with its theatres, cinemas, discos, good
cafs, pubs and restaurants. Lbeck is a
wonderfully atmospheric place. You may
find it hard to leave.

EATING#EATING#
Being so close to the coast, fish features
strongly on Lbeck menus. Cod in mustard
sauce is a speciality and plaice is popular,
as are tiny brown Baltic shrimps and
herrings in many guises. In spring, feast
on fresh asparagus. Rote Grtze, a
compote of red fruits served with vanilla
ice cream, is the favoured dessert. Do try
Lbecker Rotspon, a red wine imported
young from France and aged and mellowed
in oak casks in Lbeck. Historic merchants
houses provide the setting for some of the
most memorable meals, and on warm
summer nights its pleasantly relaxing to
eat in restaurants with courtyards and
gardens.

SHOPPING#SHOPPING#
Lbeck is famous for marzipan, and Caf
Niederegger on Breitestrasse is the place
to buy it - in 300 varieties! Beautifully
packaged it makes delicious gifts. Take a
look at the life-sized marzipan figures in
the Marzipan Salon while youre there.
From the Town Hall, the busy town centre
shopping streets are pedestrianised.
Breitestrasse has the Anny Friede
department store and Karstadt, Lbecks
largest department store, is on
Knigstrasse. These two streets have a
range of international fashion chains and
many small shops.
Lbecks Old Town architecture and street
plan makes it difficult to accommodate a
shopping mall, but the L-shaped
Knigpassage on Knigstrasse succeeds,
complete with glass roof and central plaza.
Theres a wealth of individually-owned
shops on Hxstrasse and
Fleischhaurstrasse, two of the citys most
attractive shopping streets. These, and
other side streets leading off the
pedestrian precinct, are the place to look
for designer fashion, accessories and
jewellery, also art and design for the
home, foody treats and a host of creative
ideas. Good antiques centres to search for
treasure are Engelshof on Engelsgrube and
Antiquitaten Gunter Bannow on
Fleischhauerstrasse.
