AUGUST 2011
FROM THE PASTOR: This year marks the 400th year since the first publication of the King James Version of the Bible. The impact of the KJV on common English has been tremendous. May well-known words and phrases from the KJV still sound iblical: Alpha and Omega, Ancient of Days, graven image, not live by bread alone, to name a few. Several other expressions from the KJV came into common usage but their biblical origin is now obscured: apple of his eye, city set on a hill, a house divided, scapegoat and two-edged sword, for example. Of course, what is most important is not which translation of the Bible you use, but to put into the practice the words of your translation. Mark Twain once said, It is not the parts of the Bible that I dont understand that bother me. It is the parts of the Bible that I do understand! After church a small boy announced to his mother: When I grow up, I want to be a pastor. Its an easy job! Why do you say that? his mother asked. Because you only have to read one book, the boy replied. An old well-worn family Bible caught the attention of a small boy. He thumbed through the pages, looking at the illustrations. He came across an old leaf pressed in between two pages. The boy shouted to his mother, Look what I found, Mommy! Adams suit! FELLOWSHIP DINNER This months fellowship dinner will be held Wednesday August 3rd at 6:30 pm in the fellowship hall. Everyone is welcome, even if you dont have time to make something to bring.

FELLOWSHIP BIBLE STUDY GATHERING Those interested in a time of sharing, praying, and fellowshipping together are welcome to gather at the home of Henry Procopio on Wednesday August 17th at 6:30 pm. This is a monthly gathering but anyone is welcome to come whenever they can come. The group is studying the Gospel of Mark. You can start at any time. Desserts are provided. UPCOMING DATES September 11th Nic & Rachael Billman Singing & Sharing September 17th Greenville UMC Bar B Que September 18th Senior Banquet CHURCH CLEANING SCHEDULE For August 7th For August 14th For August 21st For August 28th COMMUNION We will celebrate Communion on Sunday, August 7th. MEMBER ADDRESSES NEEDED The church is responsible for keeping up with its members addresses even if they move. We are missing addresses for the following members: Charlie Brown, Sandra & Janice Matt & Renee Huestis Steve & Sheri Lain Gene & Linda Biggs

Johnetta Brown, Mitch and Vickie Skelton. If you can get an address and phone number for any of these people please write it down and give it to the pastor. WHERE THERES A WILL THERES A WAY It requires proper planning to avoid probate and minimize estate taxes at death. When you are doing this planning, consider making a gift to your church. ARE YOU HAVING DIFFICULTY HEARING DURING WORSHIP? Our damaged hearing assistance system has been replaced. This system allows you to sit anywhere you want to in the sanctuary and hear anything that is being broadcast over the microphones through the use of special receivers and earphones. If you would like to try one, ask the pastor. WHO SHOULD YOU TALK TO? There are times when you might have an idea for improving the ministry of our church, you might see something that needs to be fixed, or you might have an idea for a new program for our church or a new outreach project idea. Who should you talk to? If it has to do with the physical property of the church the building, the contents, the grounds around the church, or the cemetery across the street, you should talk to a Trustee. The Trustees are: Doug Baxter, Steve Lain, Henry Procopio, Tim Garrett, Sandra Robinson, Patsy Clark, Martha Neeley, Charles Powell, and Grady Garton. If you have an idea for a program for our children, youth or adults you want to get your idea to the Nurture Committee. Brenda Alcorn is the head of that committee. If you have an idea for reaching our community in a new way, a way to reach more people for Christ, an new outreach or mission project, you want to get your idea to the Outreach Committee. Martha Neeley is the head of that committee. If you have an idea to support and encourage our pastor, or an idea for the general ministry of all of our members you want to get your idea to the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee. Henry Procopio is the head of that Committee. If you have an idea to raise more funds for the church you want to get your idea to the Finance Committee. Teresa Shepherd is head of the that committee.

JOELTON

HOPE

CENTER

NEIGHBORS

HELPING NEIGHBORS The Hope Center is located 212 Gifford Place, between Curves and the Laundromat. There are now over 133 client families being helped by our center. A barrel is in the entryway of the church to receive donations for the Joelton Hope Center. [You can also take them directly to the Hope Center.] There is always a need for cooking oil, sugar, corn meal and flour. These are items that the center has to buy most often. There is also a need for diapers size 4 and 5. The Hope Center is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10-4 and 10-2 Saturday. The Hope Center Board set a goal of being open 6 days a week in 2011 so additional volunteers are needed any day Monday-Saturday. Call the Hope Center at 876-1778 if you can help. The Joelton Hope Center was highlighted at the Tennessee Annual Conference session in June as a good example of risk taking mission and it was granted Advance Special Status. Our District Superintendent continues to hold up our Hope Center as an example for others of cooperation between smaller churches. Allen Graham, President of the Board of Directors and Denise Martin, Director of the Hope Center, will be speaking at Forest Grove on Sunday, August 28th. CHURCH BAR B QUE The annual St. Lawrence Catholic Church Bar B Que will be held Saturday August 6th. They will have food, crafts, live music, country store, games, silent auction, pony rides and more. The meal line opens at 4 pm. More information at www.stlawrencejoelton.org. POOL PARTY A pool party will be held to celebrate the start of the school year on Sunday August 14th at the home of Jim and Sandra Robinson, next to the church, right after worship. Bring food and drinks to share as part of the picnic lunch buffet. A grill will be available. CHURCH BLOG SITE If you havent visited the church blog site, go to www.forestgroveumctn.blogspot.com. Each sermon is posted there as they are delivered and most times there

will be a link to an audio of that sermon. You can post comments, questions and even things you have for sale. If you want to post something other than a comment on that particular sermon, just email Peg and shell post it for you (pegbillman@yahoo.com). If you want to be notified when something new is posted, become a follower of the blog. Soon I hope to have a Facebook page for Forest Grove, too so keep checking for that on the blog or in this newsletter. FOREST GROVE MUSIC In September we hope to start up regular choir rehearsals to prepare special music. If you are interested in being a part of the choir, please email Peggi at pegbillman@yahoo.com with what evening and time is best for you. We will mostly likely meet 2 times a month since everyones schedules are so full. If you have a favorite old hymn or contemporary song youd like us to sing (either as a choir or for the entire congregation), please let Peggi or Tim know. It would be helpful if you know the title, composer and even more helpful if you have a copy of the music! We are blessed to have Jesse playing guitar and would like to have more numbers using the guitar as accompaniment. Each Sunday we try to have music that appeals to all kinds of tastes from the old hymns to contemporary Christian. But, we need to remember that everything we offer is not for our likes or dislikes but for God. Each person brings what they have to him your song is different than mine and He is pleased with both! So, come to worship ready to sing your new song of praise to Him! And, listen to someone elses, giving thanks for their offering of praise!

DEVOTIONAL CORNER This devotional comes from S Words for Life By Cinde Lucas Stand Guard Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit. Eph. 6:14-18. Do you ever feel like the walls of your faith are eing bombarded by the missiles of the enemy? Satan has an endless supply of weapons that he uses against us to wear us down and wear us out. That is why we have to stand guard and keep watch over our lives (Dan. 7:2325). One of the times it is especially important to stand guard against the wiles of the enemy is during times of trials. It seems that when you are going through difficult times, satan pulls out the heavy artillery. We forget that after Jesus forty day fast, satan came with the voice of temptation to lure Jesus into his trap (Matt. 4:1-11). Satan does no less with us. When we are tired, hungry, and alone we can count on the tempter to come calling. Like Jesus, we must rely on the Holy Spirit to give us strength to stand strong during these times. The Holy Spirit gives us strength when we are weak. Only His Shield of Faith is strong enough to withstand the assaults, accusations, and other fiery darts that the enemy hurls at us. He is our defense; our every present help in times of trouble; our comforter, our Rock and our Salvation. So stand guard at all times over your life and the life of your family. Watch and pray so that you will not be drawn into the tempters snare (Matt. 26:41). Call on the Holy Spirit to deliver you from the evil one and remain steadfast in faith, knowing that the testing of your faith will prove that you are more than a conqueror in Christ Jesus! Prayer: Lord, teach me to stand guard over my heart. Teach me to use the weapons of warfare that You have given me so that I can be victorious in all things. Lead me not into temptation; deliver me fro the hand of the enemy; help me to stand in the liberty that Jesus died to give me so that I may fight the good fight of faith and stand strong in the day of adversity. In Jesus Name, Amen.
