COMPARATIVE LITERATURE PROGRAMME M.A. Comparative Literature PhD Comparative Literature Requirements Candidates shall possess a good Honours Degree (not less than 22 with a CGPA of 3.0 points) in Literature from a recognized University. Graduates in English have to produce evidence of a minimum of two years (four semesters) academic exposure to French or another language of International communication. African Language There is a Special African Language requirement for the Comparative Literature Programme. Any candidate who is deficient in speaking, reading or writing an African language will be required to take an appropriate course in the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies and produce evidence of having passed that course. 2. Except for Archaeology/Cultural Heritage management, candidates from non-History backgrounds will be required to pass through the Departments Post Graduate Diploma Programme in History and Diplomacy before admission into the MA programmes. The M.Ed Programme The following categories of candidates may be admitted on application into the M.Ed Programme (i) Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or any other approved University who have obtained approved Bachelors degree in Adult Education with 3.00 CGPA on a 5 point scale (ii) Candidates who did not major in Adult Education but obtained at least 2nd Class Honours degree or above and with a CGPA of 3.5 in the Postgraduate Diploma in Education. Such candidates would be required to do some remedial courses as prescribed in the handbook.

(ii) PhD in Animal Physiology Requirements for M.Sc Degree Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree of the University of Port Harcourt or any other recognized University in the relevant subject (e.g. Zoology, Biology, Crop Science, Environmental Sciences etc. with a CGPA of 3.00). B. The PhD Programme The following categories of students may be admitted on application: (i) Graduates of the University of Port Harcourt or those from other approved Universities who have obtained an approved degree of Adult Education with a minimum of 3.50 CGPA, on a 5 point scale. In addition, such candidates must have gone through satisfactory research work in their Masters degree programme. (ii) Candidates who hold qualifications other than the above but which could be considered acceptable by the Graduate Studies Board of the Faculty of Education on the recommendation of the Department of Adult and Non-Formal Education. 28. DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN KINETICS AND HEALTH EDUCATION (A) M.Ed Human Kinetics Area of Specialization (a) Physiology of Exercise (b) Sport Administration and Marketing (c) Sport Psychology (d) Sociology of Sport Requirements (i) Candidates must possess a Bachelors Degree in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education(Integrated Major). Preferably holders of Second Class Honours degree from a recognized University with at least a CGPA of 3.00 (ii) Candidates with a Bachelors Degree in Science or Science Education after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Human Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (this category of candidates may be required to take some additional courses in Human Kinetics and related courses as may be prescribed by the Department.

(iii) Upper Credit in Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) with a CGPA of least 4.00 B M.Ed Health Education Area of Specialization (a) Community Health Education (b) Occupational Health and Safety Education (c) School Health Education (d) Human Sexuality and Population Studies Requirements (a) Candidates must possess Second Class Honours Degree (CGPA of 3.00) from a recognized University in Health Education or Health and Human Kinetics (Integrated Major) Kinetics or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). (b) A degree in Medicine or appropriate Medical Science in Nursing or Advanced Graduate Diploma in Health Education (ADHE). ( c) Candidates with Second Class Honors Degree in the related discipline after having obtained the Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) in Health Education or Human Kinetics and Health Education (Integrated Major). Such candidates maybe required to take additional courses in Human Kinetics and Health Education as may be prescribed by the Department. Duration I. Full-Time: The M.Ed Programme (Human Kinetics or Health Education shall extend for a minimum of 12 calendar months and a maximum period of 24 calendar months. II. Part-Time (Sandwich) The duration of the part-time for M.Ed programme shall normally be twice the length of Full-Time study. C. INSTITUTE OF EDUCATION (i) Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Regular and Sandwich (Long Vacation) basis. The programme consists of four areas, namely: (a) Studies in the Theory and Practice of Education (b) Specialized Procedure in the Teaching of Subjects (c) Supervised Practice in Teaching (d) Supervised Project Requirements Candidates must possess any of the following degrees; (a) BSc, BA, B.Eng, MSc, M.A, MBA, PhD and their equivalent from a recognized University. (b) HND Upper Credit and its equivalent from recognized Polytechnics. (ii) Requirements Candidates must possess any of the following degrees; (i) BSc, BA, B.Eng, MSc, M.A, MBA, PhD (without any teaching Certificate) and their equivalent from a recognized University. (iii) Duration (a) Full-time: The programme will last for minimum of 12 calendar months and maximum of 24 calendar months. (b) Part-Time: (Sandwich) the sandwich programme lasts for a minimum duration of two long vacations and maximum of 3 long. vacations E. FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Requirements for Faculty of Engineering 1. PGD Programme : Candidates must possess a Bachelors Degree preferably with honours in the relevant Disciplines.

M.Eng Programme: Candidates must possess either a Bachelors Degree with minimum of Second Class Honours in the relevant Disciplines, with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a 5 point scale or PGD in the relevant areas with CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale. 3. PhD Programme: Candidates must possess the M.Eng Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 in the relevant Discipline. Candidates would be required to take a qualifying examination or attend an interview before admission and registration for the Programme. 30. DEPARTMENT OF PETROLEUM AND GAS ENGINEERING (i) Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Engineering (PGDPE) Requirements for PGDPE: Candidates must possess a Bachelors degree with a minimum of 3rd Class in Petroleum & Gas Engineering or a minimum of 2nd Class in any related Engineering Discipline. (ii) Postgraduate Diploma in Petroleum Technology (PGDPT) Requirements for PGDPT Candidates with degree in Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geophysics, Metallurgy (with a minimum of Second Class Lower Degree or Third Class with at least five (5) years industry experience and Engineering graduate who did not read Petroleum Engineering with CGPA in First Degree lower than 3.00 or Third Class Honors Degree are eligible to apply.

(iii) M.Eng., PhD in Petroleum Engineering in the following areas: (a) Reservoir Engineering (b) Gas Engineering (c) Drilling Engineering (d) Production Engineering (e) Petroleum Economics (iv) M.Eng. in Fuel and Energy Engineering (v) M.Sc in Energy Management and Policy F. FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT SCIENCES (i) Postgraduate Diploma in Management, Marketing, Accounting, Finance and Banking. (ii) Master of Business Administration (MBA) in the following areas: (a) Accounting (b) Finance and Banking (c) Management (d) Marketing (iii) M.Sc Accounting, Finance & Banking, Mgt. and Marketing. (a) Candidates with a minimum of 22 B.Sc degree with CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 point scale or 2.0 on a 4 point scale. (b) Holders of MBA in other areas of Mgt. Sciences with a CGPA of 3.00 on a 5 point scale and 2.0 or a 4 point scale. (iv) PhD in Accounting, Finance and Banking, Management, Marketing For PhD programmes, candidates must have M.Sc in the field of specialization with CGPA of 3.5 on a 5 points scale. MD/MS DEGREE PROGRAMME (a) Candidates must be either Medical Graduates (MBBS) of the University of Port Harcourt for not less than 5 years or confirmed and experienced academic staff of the University with Medical degree of recognized Universities. (b) In addition to the above, candidates must possess either a recognized professional qualification at the fellowship level or at least an M.Sc degree of a recognized University, after the MBBS degree. 38. DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY PGD, M.Sc, PhD with emphasis on: (a) Membrane Physiology (b) Endocrine and Reproductive Physiology (c) Blood Physiology (d) Nutrition Physiology (e) Neuro Physiology Requirements (i) Graduate of the University of Port Harcourt or other Universities recognized by statute of the University of Port Harcourt with a Second Class Honours degree in Human Physiology or related discipline. (ii) Holders of MBBS, DVVM or BVM, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Anatomy or a CGPA of 3.5 in Post Graduate Diploma in Human Physiology. (iii) Requirement for PhD: Candidates must possess an M.Sc with a minimum of 3.50 CGPA or M.Phil degree or its equivalent in Human Physiology. 39. DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY (i) M.Sc Anatomy (a) Candidates must possess a Second Class Honours Degree in Anatomy from the University of Port Harcourt or other Universities recognized by Senate of the University of Port Harcourt. MD and MS Programmes The Programmes will be at least 24 Calendar Months duration. G. Ph.D Programmes Full-Time candidates will be required to spend a minimum of 24 calendar months and a maximum of 60 calendar months. GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS


ALL PGD PROGRAMMES The minimum requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma Programmes is a Bachelors Degree in the related disciplines. For HND holders a minimum of Upper Credit is acceptable in the relevant Departments. For all Postgraduate Diploma Programmes, candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree or Third Class in the related Discipline. PGDCHE For the Postgraduate Diploma in Chemistry (PGDCHE) Programme, candidates with Third Class need not apply. MASTERS DEGREE Candidates must possess at least a Second Class Honours Degree of the University of Port Harcourt or any recognized University, in the relevant subject with a CGPA of 3.00. Candidates for the Masters in Education must have obtained a first degree in another field and in addition a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) with at least an Upper Credit classification. Candidates for the MBA Programme must possess a strong qualitative background. Candidates with PGD must have a CGPA of 3.5 to register for Masters Degree in the relevant filed. PhD PROGRAMMES Candidates for the PhD Programmes should have a Masters Degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.5 or its equivalent grade in the relevant discipline at the Masters level. Admission will be based on interview performance. PhD involves course work and qualifying examination. MD/MS PROGRAMME (A) Candidates must either be Medical candidates (MBBS) of the University of Port Harcourt for not less than five (5) years or confirmed and experienced academic staff of the University with medical degree of recognized University. (B) In addition to the above, candidates must possess either a recognized professional qualification at the fellowship level or at least an M.Sc degree of a recognized University, after the MBBS degree. FOR ALL PART-TIME PROGRAMMES Part-Time candidates must in addition to the normal admission requirements: (A) Be engaged in approved employment. (B) Submit evidence that they can devote a good proportion of their normal working year to their study.
