A liquid with a speciﬁc gravity of 2.6 and viscosity 2.0cp ﬂows through a smooth pipe of unknown diameter, resulting in a pressure drop of 0.183psi for 1.73m inch. In a particular case the level of acetone decreased by 4 cm in 10 minutes. The speciﬁc gravity of acetone is 1.36. Calculate the mass ﬂux. [8+8] 2. (a) Deﬁne absolute, reduced and apparent viscosity terms . State the units in CGS and SI systems. (b) Brieﬂy write on the viscosity of a fermentation broth suspension. 6. Spherical particles 1mm in diameter are to be ﬂuidized with water at twice the minimum velocity. The particles have an internal porosity of 40%, an average pore diameter of 10µm and a particle density of 1.5gm/cm3 . Prove that the ﬂow through the internal pores is very small compared to the ﬂow between the particles and that the internal porosity can be neglected if prediction the ﬂuidization behavior. [16] 7. It is proposed to pump 10,000kg/hr of toluene at 1140 C and 1.1 atm absolute pressure from the re-boiler of a distillation tower to a second distillation unit without cooling the toluene before it enters the pump. If the friction loss in the line between reboiler and pump is 7kN/m2 and the density of toluene is 866kg/m3 , how far above the pump must the liquid level in the reboiler be maintained t give a net positive suction head of 2.5m? (a) What is a compressible ﬂuid? (b) With the help of a line sketch describe a simple manometer. (c) Show that in a simple inclined tube manometer : ∆ P = Ri (ρA - ρB ) sin θ Where ∆ P is the pressure diﬀerence; Ri is the level diﬀerence of liquid in the manometer measured along the inclined tube ; ρA and ρB are the densities of the manometric ﬂuid and ﬂuid ﬂowing respectively and θ is the angle of inclination of the tube to horizontal.
