Summary: Lindo Sun looked like her mother. She also acted like her mother. In fact, she wanted to be her mother in many areas in her character. She would copy how she reacted when sad news comes up. She would also copy how she would react when an exciting event would take place. One day, the village¶s matchmaker came to her house. The matchmaker set up a wedding for her and a village boy, Tyan-yu. This was against her will but she was obliged to obey her parents. They said they wanted her to have a bright future so they allowed their daughter to marry the village boy. Little did Lindo¶s family know that Tyan-yu¶s family did not really like her. She was taught how to be obedient so that she could keep her promise to her family: to obey her ³new´ parents. Also, she was told to cook for the family while dressed in the maid¶s clothing. Because of this, she learned how to sense the flavor by just smelling the dish. She learned how to cook without the recipe in front of her. Instead, her hands just guided her on which to put into the pan at a certain time. When she reached the age of 16, Tyan-yu¶s mother, Huang Taitai, said that she was ready to welcome a newborn child to her family. Lindo tried to obey her but her husband did not want a child. After, she observed people around her which led her to a brilliant plan to escape from that house and marriage as well. She made the family members and the matchmaker believe that the marriage was bad luck. She said that the candles that were lit on the day of their wedding² which were suppose to symbolize a lucky marriage if they did not die out² died and led to the unhappy and unlucky marriage. Because of this, she was asked to leave the house and the servant who had a growing stomach was said to be Tyan-yu¶s real wife. She left the house and applied for a job in a fortune cookie factory. She met An-mei who became a good friend of hers. This same girl was the one who introduced Lindo to a guy named Tin Jong, who later became her
She tried telling her mom through showing her apartment where Rich¶s things were in. The boys played chess very often that Waverly would watch them play in the living room. After finding out that her mom knew about their marriage. She then made a plan to finally escape the house she was living it which was more of a prison cell to her. Her mom did not say anything but little did she know that Lindo already found out even before Waverly told her directly.husband. Winston got a box of plastic parts that were to be formed to make a replica of World War II. She tried several times on telling her but her mother would always interrupt every time Waverly would try to talk to her about Rich. to her childhood sweetheart back in high school. II. She also brought Rich to her house which turned out to be a ³turn off´ to her parents and her daughter. She brought her own chess set once to a park where she met a man who taught her secrets or techniques in playing chess. They lived in Waverly Place. They had 3 children: Winston. Vincent and Waverly. The boys did not let her play so she made her own chess board. She mastered all of these techniques as she practiced every single day in her room. . She dealt with this by finally realizing that she was free. she attended a Christmas party held at the First Chinese Baptist Church at the end of the street near their house along with her brothers. Vincent got a chess set that was already used and had missing parts. She competed and won many competitions to the point that she was not competing within Waverly Place but in some other parts of the city. One day. She thought of him as a god and she should follow everything he would order. Years passed and she planned on telling her mother that she was about to be married to a guy named Rich Schields. She also earned her first trophy. San Francisco. she postponed their wedding since Lindo said it was bad luck to get married during the month they had planned. Shoshana. Waverly Jong was their third child and their only daughter. Waverly got a twelve-pack of Life Savers. She also showed a jacket that Rich gave her as a present to tell her mom indirectly that they were together. Some of these were lack of self confidence that she could not even talk to her husband. Tyan-yu. California. She also had their honeymoon after the wedding in China along with her mom. Character Analysis: Lindo Jong had many struggles in her life.
She did her best in everything so she could reach her goal. Also. This was mentioned in ³The Red Candle´ on the bottom of page 57 until 58. she simply obeyed her without second thoughts and tried to please her as much as possible.¶´ Another value in the story that agrees with the Christian values is found in Colossians 3:18 which states: ³Wives. they let her play because of the Life Savers she was willing to give up when her brothers played chess. I would do everything to reach my goal as well. Lindo had weak points. as a god and all of his orders must be followed. µDo not break your oath. This was shown when Lindo was constantly respecting Tyan-yu since the day that they were slept in the same roof. This was shown when Lindo was crying but still trying her best to keep her promise to her parents. Since I want to become a doctor someday. ³Again. her husband. A man she met in the park taught her techniques and she would practice them every day. she did everything to become better than her brothers. She thought of Tyan-yu. Although she cried while preparing. This value was said in Matthew 5:33. Vincent taught her how to play after she bugged them while they were playing. submit to your husbands.´ This value is commanding wives to submit to their husbands. She started off watching her brothers play with the chess board they got. She also thought of Huang Taitai as her own mother though. After learning. On the other hand. you have heard that it was said to the people long ago. and so she did. She wanted to become a great player so she strived hard. Reflection: The part of the story that I enjoyed the most was when Waverly started playing chess. Her brother. The value in the story that agrees with the Christian values is to keep your promises or your word to other people. She was a girl who would keep promises no matter what. This strong point was emphasized when she was getting ready for the wedding. She lived in that house to please other people and to serve them. put keep the oaths you have made to the Lord. as is fitting in the Lord. instead of having a close relationship with her. I enjoyed this part of the book because of the way she acted after learning chess. III.Lindo had strong and weak points. She had low self confidence. she still thought about keeping the promise she made to her parents: to marry Tyan-yu and be happy with him. . Most of the time.
