Clamp meters are a very convenient testing instrument that
permits current measurements on a live conductor without
circuitinterruption.Whenmakingcurrentmeasurementswith
theordinarymultimeter,weneedtocutwiringandconnect
theinstrumenttothecircuitundertestasshowninFig.1.
Using the clamp meter, however, we can measure current
by simply clamping on a conductor as illustrated in Fig.2.
One of the advantages of this method is that we can even
measurealargecurrentwithoutshuttingoffthecircuitbeing
tested.

Inthefg.belowthereisapracticalexamplehowtotracethe
faultmeasuringtheleakagecurrent.
Normally, using this tracing system the fault will be found but sometimes
the earth leakage current will not be caused exclusively by low insulation
resistance.
In fact could happen that performing an insulation test there is not a low
value of insulation resistance even if the RCD still trips!

DD Measurement (Dielectric Discharge)

DD:DielectricDischarge
This measurement method is usually used to diagnosis multi-layer
insulations,whichrequirestheinstrumenttomeasurethedischarge
current and capacitance of the measured object 1 min after the
removal of the test voltage. This is a very good diagnostic insula-
tion test that allows deterioration and other problems voids in the
multipleinsulationstobeassessed.

theusers.
*This method has been established to test high voltage generators

DAR Measurement (Dielectric Absorption Ratio)
DAR:DielectricAbsorptionRatio
DAR measurement is a Time/Resistance test method similar to the
Polarization Index (PI), but DAR takes the ratio of the insulation

Voltage V is applied to the object (Resistance Rx)
measured from the voltage injection transformer
CT1, and the current I corresponding to the earth
resistance is flowed.
The current I is detected with detection transformer
CT2, and object (Resistance Rx) measured can be
put out by the calculation. (refer to the right diagram)
Rx, is defined as earth
resistance under test, and
R1, R2Rn are defined as
earth resistance of other
measuring objects.
These earth resistances, R1, R2, Rn
can be considered that they are connected
in parallel.
And They can be regarded as a combined
resistance Rs. The Rs can be regarded
small enough against Rx since a combined
resistance consists of several resistances.

What Demand Function is
MODEL 6300
COMPACT POWER METER
12 kinds of power measurements
Voltage (RMS), Current (RMS), active power, apparent power, reactive
power, active energy, apparent energy,

reactive energy, power factor

(cos ), frequency , demand measurement, current fowing on the neutral
line (Only on3 phase 4 wire measurement)
Regenerative electric power can be measured
Detection of consumption power and regenerative electric power.
Regenerative electric power: This is the electric power which is gener-
ated by private power generator, and is supplied to electric power com-
pany.
The electric power and the power factor for each
phase can be confrmed
Monitoring of operation for each phase.
Recording internal can be set between 1 second
and 1 hour
1/2/5/10/15/20/30 second/seconds
1/2/5/10/15/20/30 minute/minutes 1 hour
Demand measurement
Buzzer sounding and backlight blinking give warning not to exceed the
pre-setting demand target value.
Double power supply system AC line and Alkaline
size AA battery LR6 : 6 pcs.
Continuous 7 hours can be measured by using batteries
Display 3 different data simultaneously on large
screen.
4 types wiring system
1 phase - 2 wire (1ch), (2ch), (3ch)
1 phase - 3 wire
3 phase - 3 wire
3 phase - 4 wire
Direct communication with PC by USB connection
The interface for compact flash card (CF card) is
equipped.
An external memory up to 1GB or less can be used.
"DEMAND" is the function to give the alarm when the power
consumption nearly exceeds the value during the preset interval.
MODEL 6300 will warn by the buzzer sound and by the back light
blinking, when the value predicted at the inspection cycle within the
interval exceeds the target value.
Demand function is widely used in Japan among different felds such
as construction company, factory, building maintenance company,
hospital, hotel, etc., who need to consume the large electrical power.
For example, 300kW, 500kW or 600kW on an annual basis.
Therefore, they naturally need to monitor the total consumption of
the power in order to save their power as low as possible.
Now, the demand function being provided in our Power Meter
MODEL 6300 is quite useful and effective as simplifed monitoring
system.

Flicker is an impression of unsteadiness of visual sensation
induced by a light stimulus whose luminance or spectral distri-
bution fuctuates with time. This depends on the frequency and
magnitude of light change and on the observer. Above a certain
threshold, ficker becomes disturbing for human beings. Flicker
is caused by periodic voltage fuctuations and generally not by
instantaneous voltage fuctuation like a swell or a dip.
What is Flicker?
Flicker origins
Origins of voltage fuctuation causing ficker are arc furnaces, welding machines, oil pres-
sure elevators (lifts), cranes, excavators and other heavy fuctuating loads.
Impact of Flicker to equipment
Fluctuating brightness of an incandescent lamp, a mercury lamp, a PC monitor, TV
screen, etc.
Possible reduction of motor torque.
Possible loss of data on a PC.
Counter Measurements of Flicker
Increasing the short circuit power of the supply.
Introduction of a Flicker compensator.
Active flter system.
Reactor phase control system by thyristor.
Capacitor switching control system by thyristor.
Equipped with the Flicker measurement function
Flicker can be measured by using ficker sensor KEW8325F of the option.
In accordance to IEC61000-4-15:1997+A1:2003 and EN50160 standard.
Pst value (short term severity, ten minute period) and the Plt value (long term severity, two hour period) can be measured.
In addition, the Pst can be shown in detail for 1 minute intervals.
Attention for KEW6310 customers :
Flicker measurements are possible with frmware of KEW6310 upgrade (Ver.2.01), PC software PQA Master upgrade (Ver. 2.01) and an

Demonstration Panels
To support sales promotion and user training, the Kyoritsu
sales promotion program has prepared 3 different demon-
stration panels: Kew 8205A, Kew 8208 and Kew 8215.
These lightweight portable demonstration panels can be used
for marketing and educational purposes, such as sales force
training, end users training, seminars, exhibitions, trade fairs
and schools of electrical engineering.
KEW 8205A
Multifunction and Safety Testers demo panel
This demonstrative panel is intended to demonstrate the use Multifunction testers and
specifc instruments like Continuity, Insulation, Earth, Loop and RCD testers of Kyoritsu.
The panel simulates an electrical installation with TT and TN distribution systems, easy
selectable by a switch on the panel.
The tests that can be carried out are:
ContinuityTestofProtectiveandEquipotentialconductors.
InsulationResistanceTest.
EarthResistanceTest(Volt-Amperemethod).
EarthLoopTest,includingProspectiveShortcircuitCurrent(PSC)andProspective
Fault Current (PFC).
RCDTrippingTest.
KEW 8208
Leakage demo panel
This panel demonstrates the use of Kyoritsu Leakage Clamp Meters in troubleshooting
nuisance tripping of RCDs due to leakage currents.
It includes an RCD with bypass facilities and 5 downstream circuits. Each circuit can
simulate a fxed/variable leakage current by selecting an appropriate switch.
Using a Kyoritsu Leakage Clamp the overall leakage current can be found and the
source of leakage current direction can be traced by clamping the conductors in each
circuit.
There can also be a combination of one or more leakage currents, for instance, it is
possible to simulate a situation of an RCD tripping due to two faulty circuits, one with a
fxed leakage current and the other one with variable leakage current (for example due
to humidity).
KEW 8215
All Clamps demo panel
This panel demonstrates the operation of all Kyoritsu AC, AC/DC and Leakage clamp
meters including the special open jaw AC/DC clamp meters like KEW FORK 2300R or
KEW MATE 2000 series.
It features the "actual size" photos of 3 different instruments. However for an effective
demonstration, real samples of these instruments should be attached to the panel using
a simple anti-theft cable supplied with the panel.
This panel generates approx: 15A AC and DC, 30 mA AC of leakage current, 12V AC,
15V DC and 10. The current values can be measured by simply clamping the wires
or, for voltage and resistance values, touching the metallic test points on the panel with
the instrument test leads.

Accuracy
The accuracy of a digital tester is defined as the difference
between the readi ng and the true val ue for a quanti ty
measured in reference conditions. Accuracy is specifed in the
format: (xx% rdg xx dgt)
The first portion identifies a percentage error relative to the
reading, which means it is proportional to the input. The
second portion is an error, in digits, that is constant regardless
of the input.
"Rdg"is for reading and "dgt"is for digits. Dgt indicates the
counts on the last signifcant digit of the digital display and is
typically used to represent an error factor of a digital tester.
Auto-discharge Function
A function used immediately after an insulation test to
automatically release charges stored within the circuit under
test during measurement.
Voltage remaining in the circuit under test can be monitored
during auto-discharging process as the scale reading.
Auto-ranging
A function of a tester to automatically select the appropriate
measuring range based on the input signal.
Average Value
The average of an AC waveform's instantaneous values taken
over a half cycle. Ordinary testers respond to the average
value.
For sinusoidal wave :
Average value = Maximum value2/= Maximum value0.637
When the true RMS value is 100V ;
Average value= Maximum value2/=1410.637 = 90(V)
The reading of ordinary testers is calibrated in terms of the
effective value of a sinusoidal wave even though they are
responding to the average value. They are called average-
responding-RMS-calibrated type of testers. As opposed to
these, true-RMS type testers respond and show the true RMS
value.
Crest Factor
The ratio of the maximum value to the effective value.
It represents the range of input in which a tester maintains
linear operation, expressed by a multiple of the full scale value
of the range being used.
Crest factor = Maximum value/True RMS value
For sinusoidal wave;
Crest factor = 141/100 = 1.41
Data Hold
A function to freeze the reading on a digital display for ease of
checking or recording even in a diffcult-to-read situation for a
tester.
Decibel: dB
A unit used to express the magnitude of change in level of
electric signal or sound intensity.
A voltage ratio of 1 to 10 is equal to -20dB, 10 to 1 to 20dB,
100 to 1 to 40dB and 1000 to 1 to 60dB. A power ratio of 10
to 1 is not 20dB, but 10dB, since power(P) is proportional to
the square of voltage(V).
Diode Test
A function to apply a diode or a transistor a constant current
having a value needed to turn it on in order to check the
diode's or the transistor's forward voltage drop and identifying
the connection direction of the device.
Distortion Factor
A degree of distortion of a waveform, typically expressed as
the ratio of the effective value of harmonic components to the
effective value of the fundamental component.
Dual Integration Method
A technique to convert voltage into time. The frst integration
time (Ts) and the second integration time (Tx) are used. First,
the input voltage (Vx) is integrated on a certain time interval (Ts)
and then, the resulting voltage is "reverse-integrated" using a
reference voltage (Vr) until it becomes 0 (zero).
The "reverse-integration time" (Tx) is proportional to input
vol tage (Vx). Therefore, the i nput vol tage (Vx) can be
determined by measuring Tx.
With this technique, stable measurements can be taken with
high accuracy, resolution and noise rejection ratio. One
particular advantage is high noise rejection ratio at 50 or 60Hz
power line frequency. All of Kyoritsu digital clamp meters and
testers utilize this method.
Effective Measuring Range of Insulation Tester
The measuring range for which the accuracy of an insulation
tester is guaranteed. There are two kinds of effective
measuring ranges: the first and second effective measuring
ranges.
First effective measuring range
From 1/1000 to 1/2 the maximum effective scale value
(When there is no major scale division for 1/2 the maximum
effective scale value, the nearest major scale division is used.)
Second effective measuring range
Scales divisions not included in the frst effective measuring range
For example for a 500V/100M insulation tester;
First effective measuring range: 0.1-50M(5% of indicated
value)
Second effective measuring range: 50-100M(10% of
indicated value)
Form Factor
The ratio of the effective value to the average value.
Form factor = Effective value/Average value
Frequency Response
The manner in which a device changes its output quantity it,
its indication for a measured quantity or its response over a
range of frequencies.
AC signals to measure with a tester can be of one frequency
or from a wide frequency band ranging from low to high
frequencies. To measure these frequencies, it is better to use
a tester having a wide frequency response range.
Hall Element
When a current-carrying conductor is placed in a magnetic
feld so that the direction of the magnetic feld is perpendicular

Measurement categories
(Over-voltage categories)
To ensure safe operation of measuring instruments, IEC61010-1 establishes safety stan-
dards for various electrical environments, categorized as CAT.1 to CAT.4, and called mea-
surement categories.
Higher-numbered categories correspond to electrical environments with greater transient
energy (that can be very dangerous), so a measuring instrument designed for CAT.4 envi-
ronments can endure greater transient energy than one designed for CAT.3 or lower.
CAT.1 : Secondary electrical circuits connected to an outlet through a transformer or similar device.
Secondary electrical circuit parts inside equipments like TVs, PCs, Copiers, etc.
CAT.2 : Primary electrical circuits or equipments connected to an outlet by a power cord. Outlets at
more than 10 meters from CAT.3source, or at more than 20 meters from CAT.4 source.
CAT.3 : Primary electrical circuits of the equipment connected directly to the distribution panel.
Switchboards, busbars and feeders from the distribution panel to outlets.
CAT.4 : The circuit from the service drop to the service entrance, and to the power meter and primary
over current protection device (distribution panel). Circuits close to the secondary side of low
voltage power transformer.
to the direction of the current flow, voltage is developed in
the direction perpendicular to both the magnetic feld and the
current fow. This is called the Hall effect and the Hall element
is a device that utilizes the effect.
Kyoritsu AC/DC clamp meters and clamp sensors employ the
Hall element.
Harmonics
Power line AC voltage from a utility company has near
sinusoidal waveform of fundamental frequency with little
distortion. When only a load consisting of resisters, capacitors
and coils, called a linear load (its constant is fxed regardless
of the amount of current flowing through it), is connected
to mains supply, no distortion is introduced into the load
current waveform. However, when a non-linear load, such
as a semiconductor and a saturable reactor, is connected,
distortion appears in the load current waveform. The current
with a waveform containing distortion, or harmonic current,
flows in the direction toward the low impedance side and
in the process, produces voltage drop over the impedance
of the current path, causing the load voltage also to contain
harmonics.
Indicated Value
The value indicated by a tester for a measured quantity
Peak Hold
A function to memorize the peak value over a certain period of
time.
*Response time is selectable from approx. 10ms and 100ms.
Reading in the peak hold mode is the peak current value
multiplies by 1/ 2.
(When the input is sinusoidal, the reading is equal to the true
RMS value.)
Peak Value
The value at a point where a waveform has the maximum
amplitude.
Resolution
The mi ni mum i ncrements i n whi ch a tester can take
measurements.
Sample Rate
Frequency at which an A/D converter circuit senses the
quantity to measure: typically, twice or three times per second.
Sensitivity
The ability of a tester to respond to the quantity to measure,
expressed as the ratio of a change induced in the reading to a
change in the input:
Sensitivity =

Change in reading
Change in quantity to measure
Shock Hazard
Also referred to as electric shock. When a person touches a
motor that has a "leak", a path can be created from the motor
frame to the hand, body and feet of the person to the foor he
is standing on to allow a current to fow through it, sometimes
resulting in a fatal accident.
The seriousness of a shock hazard widely varies depending on
the amount and duration of the current that fows through the
person' s body. His constitution, age and medical condition
are also variation factors, but in general, at a frequency of 50
or 60Hz, stimulus to the skin is felt at 1mA, considerable pain
occurs at 5mA, pain is unbearable at 10mA, there is diffculty
in releasing the "leaking" object because of intense muscle
contraction at 20mA, it is considerably dangerous at 50mA
and fatality is likely at 100mA. For the safety limit for a fatal
current, which causes ventricular fbrillation, Professor Dalziel
proposed the following equation from numbers of experiments
on animals.
I = 165 t
Where, I = current (mA) and t = time (sec).
From this theory, the maximum duration for a current of 165mA
is 1 second.
Thermocouple
A device that uses the voltage developed by the junction of
two dissimilar metals to measure temperature. One junction,
called the measuring junction, is placed at the point where
temperature is to be measured. The other junction, called the
reference junction, is maintained at a reference temperature.
The voltage developed between the two junctions varies
depending on the difference between the temperatures of the
two junctions and the type of thermocouple.
True RMS Value
The square root of the average of the square of a periodic
waveform's instantaneous values taken over one cycle. It is
also called the rms value and the most closely relates to such
form of energy as force and heat.
(The effective value of an alternating current is expressed
as the value of the direct current which produces the same
amount of heat as the alternation current does.)
For sinusoidal wave :
True RMS = Maximum value1/ 2= Maximum value0.707
When a True RMS is 100V ;
Maximum value = True RMS 2= 1001.41 = 141(V)

Kyoritsu Quality Control Concept
Kyoritsu started early an effort to establish system that en-
sures traceability to the national standards in order to produce
reliable instruments as well as instruments that can assure reli-
ability of other equipment and installations.
When traceability is in place, measurements taken with an in-
strument any time and anywhere in any situation can be relat-
ed to the appropriate national measurement standards through
a clear and unbroken chain of comparisons.
For example, in terms on measurement defned by JIS (Japa-
nese Industrial Standards), traceability is specifed as a condi-
tion in which a calibration path is established from instruments
produced or in-house standards to higher level standards to
the national standards. Kyoritsu currently has a system in
place as shown in the fgure below.
Our calibrator (standard) is calibrated at Japan Electric Meters
Inspection Corporation (JEMIC), Japan Quality Assurance
Organization (JQA) and Fluke Japan who perform calibration
based on the units established and maintained by National In-
stitute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST).
The standard is used as the in-house standard to calibrate all
the test and measuring equipments which are used in-house.
Voltage : Fluke 5520A calibrators are used as in-house DC
and AC voltage standards.
Current : DC or AC current is converted to a voltage by a
standard resistor, and the voltage is calibrated
with a precision digital multimeter.
Resistance : Calibration resisters are calibrated with a DC
standard current generator and the precision
digital multimeter.
