From the NABJ President
Dear NABJ Family, Supporters and Friends: On behalf of the NABJ Board of Directors, staff, and convention planning team, I’d like to welcome you to the National Association of Black Journalists’ 35th Convention and Career Fair here in San Diego. Despite the challenges we’ve all faced during the continued economic woes across the country and our ever-evolving industry, this year’s theme speaks to the unwavering spirit and commitment of our dedicated members: NABJ@35: The Power of Change. Many of us have been forced to adapt to change whether it’s by learning new technology or taking on heavier workloads as corporations cut back. Please find comfort in knowing NABJ has remained a resilient organization fighting to make sure your voices are heard. I am pleased to share with you that our members are being promoted and landing new jobs. Many companies have returned to the career fair eager to recruit. I am thrilled to welcome a few of our special guests, Dr. Oz, David Drummond of Google, CeCe Winans, and Hollywood’s Boris Kodjoe. Hats off to our Honorary Convention Chairwoman Paula Madison and Convention Chairwoman Elise Durham for their contributions to this convention and NABJ. You’ll find tracks have been created to meet your professional development needs whether you’re a neophyte or veteran. If you want to strike out on your own, there are several workshops that will help you build your brand. Healthy NABJ is back for a second year with a focus on your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. For those of you who love golfing, running or just swaying to music, there is something to get you pumped at the convention. Please get to know our Founders, members visiting from other countries and first-time attendees. NABJ continues to reach and teach journalists at home and abroad, from Haiti to Africa. Finally, I extend special congratulations to our awards recipients. I offer a special thanks to our host chapter, San Diego Association of Black Journalists. Let the Power of Change start with you!
Yours in Service,
Kathy Y. Times President, National Association of Black Journalists
2010 Annual Convention and Career Fair | July 28-August 1, 2010 | San Diego, California
From the Interim Executive Director
To my fellow NABJ Members: As a long-time member and supporter of the National Association of Black Journalists, nowhere in my career or business plan did I foresee serving as official “Consultant/Interim Executive Director” of our great organization. However, when the call came to step in, as a fellow journalist and businessman dedicated to the mission of NABJ, I was compelled to temporarily juggle things around for a few months and answer the call. It has been an honor to serve during this challenging time of transition in the media industry, but especially for NABJ. Dedicated board members, extraordinary staff, a talented development consultant, and an unbelievable group of dedicated volunteers have teamed up with me to analyze, plan and conquer a plethora of challenges while taking advantage of opportunities available for this organization. Our list of accomplishments is long but we have an even longer list of opportunities that still needs attention. We moved our national office into a new state-of-the-art building on the University of Maryland campus. Multiple contracts have been renegotiated saving us hundreds of thousands of dollars. We have transitioned to a new accounting system that better records, tracks and forecasts the financial needs of the organization. We have created more niche programming and improved the quality of programming that meets the immediate and future needs of our membership. We have crafted programming that provides appropriate and attractive environments for our sponsors and business partners. NABJ is moving toward a new highly flexible and agile business model that keeps our core foundation and journalistic values intact while creating an improved environment for our members, associates and business partners. Our successful future depends on the right leadership, strong advocacy, listening to our members, associates and business partners, creative fundraising, improved business practices, improved governance, making members and associates feel they are highly valued, creating programming that appeals to all segments of the organization, better marketing of our brand and an effective development manager. I can assure you that as part of the search committee for a new Executive Director, we are encouraged that we are getting the right person who not only understands the vision but who can execute the mission. We are a resilient organization and I will continue to work toward making sure that we not only survive but also thrive in the new frontier of media opportunities.
Yours in service,
Drew Berry Consultant/Interim Executive Director

From the Honorary Convention Chair
From the Convention Chair
Greetings National Association of Black Journalists, As the Honorary Convention Chair, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the annual National Association of Black Journalists Convention & Career Fair being hosted in San Diego, CA. This year, NABJ is embarking on a major milestone as the historic group celebrates 35 years as an organization. Over the next four days you will be met with exemplary training, information, unmatched networking and celebration. This year’s convention promises to equip media professionals with the tools needed to navigate the changing landscape of the industry and to remain competitive. Organizers have prepared innovative workshops designed to change the minds of professionals and to help usher them in the new age of journalism. The convention also offers the opportunity for participants to meet up with old friends and make new ones as well as embark on professional relationships. It is my hope that you will add the great city of San Diego as a place that is dear to your heart. San Diego is home to Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park and many more attractions and landmarks. I look forward to a successful NABJ Convention and wish you a wonderful experience.
Welcome to San Diego, NABJ! This summer we are all about change. The Webster’s University Dictionary definition of change is, “To make different. To give a totally different form or appearance to: TRANSFORM.” Change! It can be frightening, unsettling, intimidating. But change also can be empowering… if you know how to embrace it and make it work for you. When we started planning the convention last fall, one of the first things we thought about was how to help our members navigate this ever-changing landscape that has become our industry. As business models evolve and change and technology pushes us in new directions, we realized that the old way of organizing what we offer at the convention just would not do. Gone are the days of “print journalists,” “broadcast journalists,” and “new media journalists.” We are all learning to be “all-platform journalists.” So, this new plateau warranted the need for NABJ to re-identify our convention tracks. We assembled a fantastic programming committee who worked diligently to make sure that the training you receive over the next four days is intense and relevant. Our programming tracks speak to where you are instead of who you are in your career. As you peruse the descriptions below, think about your career/calling and let the metaphors guide you to the top! • The Lobby: You’ve had your first internship or trying to get that first gig. Here you’ll learn how to find a mentor, learn to maximize your skill-set and get advice about early career challenges. • The Elevator: This track is for journalists with more than a couple of years in the business, but who need that extra “lift” to go the distance. • The Training Room: Here you’ll get hands-on, practical experience and walk away with applicable skills to help you up your game. • The Conference Room: Designed for mid-career professionals who need to talk out their concerns. Here you’ll find discussions on industry best practices that will help you advance your career and maintain sanity. • The Watercooler: Whether it’s breaking news or hot topics, this is the place to talk about, debate and examine them all. • The Business Center: Ready to strike out on your own? Here you’ll get skilled on becoming a successful entrepreneur. • The Executive Suite: For those currently in upper level management who aspire to the corner office. (Pre-registration required). We are empowered, we are transformed, and we are ready for new challenges. We are NABJ@35: The Power of Change!
In the spirit of journalism excellence,
