Guilty Pleasures
Everything I need to know, I learned in kindergarten. Most high school teachers and administrators are probably astonished by such a comment, but one must comprehend what area of knowledge being implied. Thank you, please and youre welcome are phrases that are non-apparent in American society today. I believe we all have a guilty pleasure of being apathetic towards other emotions. Yes girls, that may be a reason why guys frankly dont care what emotions you have while breaking up with you. Let the fact be known that having a simple gratitude for others basic existence is a key step into finding an appreciation for ones own life. Making the most of your life and living it to the fullest means loving thy neighbors. The word neighbor is defined as, anyone that can use your help. Yeah, you might be thinking I am full of it, and thats great. I used to be apathetic to others and really could care less how others were feeling that day. But I had a collision with reality and finally came to the conclusion that people are people.

Today in movies when we want to go see a teenage drama, we usually find the stereotypical setting such as some diminutive problem likea stolen boyfriend or a concert that everyone wants to go to. This is not true with the movie Thirteen. It starts off like any usual teenage movie that encompasses the same sort of drama. Tracy (Evan Rachael Wood) is in 7th grade and has found herself lost in new images, one being Evie (Nicole Reed) the unofficial popular girl in school. Throughout the movie Tracy seeks Evie out and they become best friends. Sounds like a cookie-cutter movie, huh? Well, after Tracy befriends Evie many issues come up like sex, drugs, alcohol, self-muti-
lation, shoplifting, and divorce. Pretty much every horrific thing that a person can go through during their public school life happens in less than a couple of months. Not to mention that Tracys mother (Holly Hunter) has many problems of her own. Evie doesnt have the perfect well-off life that everyone would think that she has either. Nicole Reed (Evie) wrote the script about her life when she was thirteen years old. Now as a fifteen year old she has been pronounced one of the coolest girls in America by YM magazine and a Cosmogirl of the year. Holly Hunter who plays Tracys mother was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in this movie. This movie is a must see because a lot of times us girls dont realize how much alike we truly are and this movie will hit you back to reality.
Ever since the beginning of time we have been fascinated by peoples appearances. In the past couple of years we have also been fascinated with reality shows. When the two combine we dont always get the best concoction. There have always been make-over television shows, but now they are at a whole new level. A lot of these new shows are displaying the perks of plastic surgery in order to make people look pretty. My question is, who gets to decide what is beautiful and what isnt beautiful? With all of these superglamorized television shows we
tend to get blinded by what truly classifies pretty. ABC has a popular show called Extreme Makeover. What we dont see on TV is the months that the contestants spend alone in a hotel room during the process. Contestants miss out on important life experiences through this ordeal. These people may have a new set of teeth, but is it really worth the months being alone? MTV has also launched a show that involves plastic surgery. I Want A Famous Face follows young men and women on the quest to look like their favorite celebrity. In many cases all they get is a new nose or breast implants. Newsflash--a new nose wont make you look like a celebrity. It will just give you a new nose. These people on this show want to be famous, but is spending thousands of dollars on cheek
implants the way to do it? With the money that these people spend on the surgery they could have gotten acting, dancing, singing, etc. lessons. Another MTV special came on that had a contest between two teams of girls that had to make a ugly girl pretty. In the end the whole school would vote on who was the prettiest. The same question comes up: Where do people get the authority to make the calls on whats pretty or not? FOXs show The Swan takes middle-aged women, gives them plastic surgery and enters them in a beauty contest. Since when are middle-aged women with a family and job supposed to look like supermodels? My point is that these shows are sending America the wrong messages. Beauty is defined in many ways, but its up to you just have to make up your own definition of it.
On Thursday April 22 Bryan High hosted the 6th annual Cultural Fiesta. For the first time it was held inside at the Blue Auditorium instead of outside at the courtyard. It worked because we had space and people could view the performers better, said Spanish teacher Rose Wells. The event was put together by the HYPE club and the foreign language classes. The members of HYPE did the door prizes, publicity, and program and the language classes made the beautiful decorations. said Spanish teacher and HYPE club sponsor Amalia Grimaldo. Tickets were given at the auditorium door to people that entered the event for a chance to win door prizes. These included t-shirts, free meals, and haircuts. But thats a topic for another time. The issue here is what really makes us human. That defining attribute that sets us apart. And I think its is to ask, Why? Curious by nature humans are born to wonder. I know that we are the only ones who truly ask why to find the answers and more importantly the meaning of something. I know this because if anything else could, they would have devised a way to communicate that all consuming question, Why? Or mabye theyre content with what they have. It is this one thought that
comes from more than just our surroundings, imprinted onto us from the day we are born, that has inevitably led to the dominance of our species. Our science, our religions, our wars. These things are us, human. Mankind is the means to an answer, one that is far away, but with each answer comes infinitely more questions. Forever we will be man, just another part of this Earth. But to become something greater than you are. You must begin to understand yourself. That is the brief glimpse I feel like sharing with you. So make with it what you will. But just remember. Youre only human.
