Rocafella is dominating the rap scene

Shawdie Krunk and Yeah are all notorious words. The sad thing about it, is that these few words have made Lil Jon a millionaire. The simple fact is that there is an everwidening gap between those rappers who are successful and those whose careers are looking pretty bleak. Such rappers as Jermaine Dupri, Ja Rule and Bone Crusha are all rappers who have made hits, but the message has not been meaningful. Thats one thing that makes a rapper immortal. Talking about shawdies, mas and gettin tipsy have all been overplayed this year. By the end of 03, I think every rap lover was trying to figure out what was going to be the next step up for rap music, and one man made it happen. Kanye West, out of Chi-town (Chicago) with his number one single, Through the Wire made rappers everywhere cringe. The poppy beats and a previous mastermind at his skill, K. West took the hearts of women and men. Not only does he talk about his life, as a general aspect, but he draws even a greater audience by not filling his music with bling, deuce-duces and spinnas. When we heard about Jigga retiring and we were all skeptical about him being the rapper which he seems to rap about in every album. But with the recent hit of Dirt off Your Shoulder, HOV is proving that he is one of the great ones. He really does, Check Chedda like a food inspecta. With Kanye and Jay-Z both on Dynasty one must ask, Whats going on with the other labels? Most labels like Bad Boy, G-Unit, Death Row, and No Limit are all trying to make hits. Thats the problem. We dont need hits, were not cocaine addicts. Finding a rapper who is going to leave an everlasting impression is difficult, but there has been a few i.e.:) Big Poppa, Tupac, Nas and Jam Master Jay are just a few. I think we are finally figuring out that you dont have to hard or a thug to rule the hip-hop world.

Guilty Pleasures
Everything I need to know, I learned in kindergarten. Most high school teachers and administrators are probably astonished by such a comment, but one must comprehend what area of knowledge being implied. Thank you, please and youre welcome are phrases that are non-apparent in American society today. I believe we all have a guilty pleasure of being apathetic towards other emotions. Yes girls, that may be a reason why guys frankly dont care what emotions you have while breaking up with you. Let the fact be known that having a simple gratitude for others basic existence is a key step into finding an appreciation for ones own life. Making the most of your life and living it to the fullest means loving thy neighbors. The word neighbor is defined as, anyone that can use your help. Yeah, you might be thinking I am full of it, and thats great. I used to be apathetic to others and really could care less how others were feeling that day. But I had a collision with reality and finally came to the conclusion that people are people.

High school is what you make it to be

Its here!!! I know, I know...13 long years of formal education and that first door to the gateway of your life has finally arrived. Now, all you have to do is not fail. It seems as though that wont be a hard task but going 2000 miles away from home, seems as though the odds are against me. Leaving for Philadelphia in early September was an event I thought I was more than prepared for. Well, I am ready physically and emotionally, but I am not mentally. Bryan High School was not a waste of my time. Now I have to realize why I was so loathed of it in 9th, 10th, 11th and even a portion of my senior year. As graduation is getting closer and peers are telling me of their plans for after high school, I start to realize that nothing will ever be the same again. Most of us will have our own bills, having to pay for our education and basically really being the adult which we tell our parents we are, while trying to get a later curfew. It has been the minute things which have made my senior year a more memorable one. Just getting to know people, who I never would have talked to has changed my point of view of Bryan High. I know this is not showing my great organizational skills, and I really dont have any, to tell you the truth. So, juniors and underclassmen, dont let this time pass--your education is not going to be handed to you on a silver platter. Believe me, if I had figured that out then I would not have complained half as much. Just because you got everything quickly in 8th grade doesnt mean you always will. So, yall have a great summer, and holla at ya gurl, girl.

Thirteen: New Girl Drama

Elisa Santana Staff writer

Today in movies when we want to go see a teenage drama, we usually find the stereotypical setting such as some diminutive problem likea stolen boyfriend or a concert that everyone wants to go to. This is not true with the movie Thirteen. It starts off like any usual teenage movie that encompasses the same sort of drama. Tracy (Evan Rachael Wood) is in 7th grade and has found herself lost in new images, one being Evie (Nicole Reed) the unofficial popular girl in school. Throughout the movie Tracy seeks Evie out and they become best friends. Sounds like a cookie-cutter movie, huh? Well, after Tracy befriends Evie many issues come up like sex, drugs, alcohol, self-muti-

lation, shoplifting, and divorce. Pretty much every horrific thing that a person can go through during their public school life happens in less than a couple of months. Not to mention that Tracys mother (Holly Hunter) has many problems of her own. Evie doesnt have the perfect well-off life that everyone would think that she has either. Nicole Reed (Evie) wrote the script about her life when she was thirteen years old. Now as a fifteen year old she has been pronounced one of the coolest girls in America by YM magazine and a Cosmogirl of the year. Holly Hunter who plays Tracys mother was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in this movie. This movie is a must see because a lot of times us girls dont realize how much alike we truly are and this movie will hit you back to reality.

Reality TV isnt what it seems

Elisa Santana May 21, 2004

Ever since the beginning of time we have been fascinated by peoples appearances. In the past couple of years we have also been fascinated with reality shows. When the two combine we dont always get the best concoction. There have always been make-over television shows, but now they are at a whole new level. A lot of these new shows are displaying the perks of plastic surgery in order to make people look pretty. My question is, who gets to decide what is beautiful and what isnt beautiful? With all of these superglamorized television shows we

tend to get blinded by what truly classifies pretty. ABC has a popular show called Extreme Makeover. What we dont see on TV is the months that the contestants spend alone in a hotel room during the process. Contestants miss out on important life experiences through this ordeal. These people may have a new set of teeth, but is it really worth the months being alone? MTV has also launched a show that involves plastic surgery. I Want A Famous Face follows young men and women on the quest to look like their favorite celebrity. In many cases all they get is a new nose or breast implants. Newsflash--a new nose wont make you look like a celebrity. It will just give you a new nose. These people on this show want to be famous, but is spending thousands of dollars on cheek

implants the way to do it? With the money that these people spend on the surgery they could have gotten acting, dancing, singing, etc. lessons. Another MTV special came on that had a contest between two teams of girls that had to make a ugly girl pretty. In the end the whole school would vote on who was the prettiest. The same question comes up: Where do people get the authority to make the calls on whats pretty or not? FOXs show The Swan takes middle-aged women, gives them plastic surgery and enters them in a beauty contest. Since when are middle-aged women with a family and job supposed to look like supermodels? My point is that these shows are sending America the wrong messages. Beauty is defined in many ways, but its up to you just have to make up your own definition of it.

On Thursday April 22 Bryan High hosted the 6th annual Cultural Fiesta. For the first time it was held inside at the Blue Auditorium instead of outside at the courtyard. It worked because we had space and people could view the performers better, said Spanish teacher Rose Wells. The event was put together by the HYPE club and the foreign language classes. The members of HYPE did the door prizes, publicity, and program and the language classes made the beautiful decorations. said Spanish teacher and HYPE club sponsor Amalia Grimaldo. Tickets were given at the auditorium door to people that entered the event for a chance to win door prizes. These included t-shirts, free meals, and haircuts. The announcer for the event was Carolina Benevides radio announcer for Radio Alegria.

I thought the announcer was great, said Senora Wells. Starting at around 6 p.m. the Junior ROTC presented the flags and the performances began. The performers included the BHS Gospel Choir, Sophomore Karen Tobias, Nancy Almaraz, German singers, Debra Balandran, and Freshman Maria Johnson Ballet Torres dance with the BHS Ballet Folklorico Folklorico dancers, dancers. photo by Marissa Garcia Jones Cumbia dancers, Texas A&M Ballet Folklorico dancers, and this contest. the BHS Ballet Folklorico. Just a Little Note

The last days of my senior year are coming to an end. So much has happened in the past four year of my life that have influenced and changed me tremendously. The people around me influenced me on all aspects, life, love and dreams. First and foremost, I have to thank my mother. She has and always will support me in the choices I make in my life. She has given me the courage, insight and incentive to strive for my best. I love her with all my heart! Thanks to her I am a better person. All of the teachers in school have influenced me. Each one of my senior teachers have shown a new perspective on different subjects. Mrs. Lewis has bettered my understanding of algebra, and I am now confident. Mr. Kelling has influenced and interested me in what now I consider a small hobby. My skills and interest in cooking is all credited to the infamous Mrs. Fritz! Giving speeches in front of people are not a problem, Coach Ponzios third period class was the best ever! My newspaper writing and computer skills will always benefit me thanks to journalism with Mrs. Farris. English IV with Mrs. Prejean will never be forgotten; the atmosphere is like no other in that class! Government may not have been my favorite class in the world, but it will always be the coolest, thanks to Mr. Blair. There is always an opportunity cost for every choice you make! There are far more other people in my life that have also impacted me. I cant thank each and every one, yet if you know me then you have. I cant thank everyone enough for being there for me.

My plans for this summer!

When summer comes and school is out, what do you like to do, where would you like to go? This summer I have a quinceaera to plan by August, so Im not going anywhere this summer. If I was not going to have a quineaera, I would go to Florida. I can just keep wishing because Im not going anywhere. Im going to have fun this summer with practice, getting things finished, and other good things like that. Im going to have everything by June and start practice once a week in June and move to like several times a week in July. Then Im going to have every thing ready by August and just have time off to do what I want for the time being before school starts. My quinceera is the second weekend after school starts which is August 28, 2004. My birthday is August 25. If youre wondering what my colors are and where Im going to have it, the colors are White and Baby Blue and Im having it at the Warehouse. Well I hope to see you there. Its $5 to get in at the door during the dance. If you want a invitation, look for Alicia Ferrzazas the beginning of August.

Why people like big cities during the summer

Are you a person whose family goes out of town for a long time in the summer? If youre not, well it is pretty boring having to stay at home when you can be going to a different town or a different state. I like the fact that you dont have to see the same old places and if youre going to a larger city well, you get to see more interesting places. Many cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas have pretty views at night because of all the lights. There are however, many large cities that look dusty in the daytime, but it all changes when its dark, kind of like Las Vegas. Theres just something about big cities. Everyone loves to go and see them, and the summer is the best time of year to do it. Watch girls in their bathing suits. Garrett Karr 9 Work at City Hall in Calvert, Tx. Fact and fiction

Lorena Rangel Norseman staff How do you think you would react to someone who told you and proved to you that he/she was a witch, supernatural or other worldly being? For centuries other worldly creatures have been a dark thing, a subject not spoken of in proper homes or public places. Now it seems to have changed, especially among young children, due mainly to Pokemon and other cartoon characters of that nature. While the young audience has the Pokemon, the older audiences have shows like Charmed, Angel, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Shows that use witches, angels and vampires to teach morals and show good triumphing over evil, while at the same time trying to show the struggles of normal everyday life. These television series try to show the world that even though these people have powers or are different they have feelings and express emotions much like the rest of us. With that said, how would you react if you were to meet a real-world version of the Charmed Ones or of Angel or Buffy? More importantly, do you or would you believe in them? How should one distinguish between the supernatural worlds of the television and that of the real world? Well,in my opinion, the supernatural world of the television is one of make believe and is one meant solely to entertain, and it should be treated as such. Do not misconstrue my words. I believe that one as a fan should be into the story and should feel a slight twinge of emotion while watching an episode, but it should not affect their daily life; it should only be for the duration of the episode. What I am trying to express to you is that its fine to be completely into a show but you should not be into the show to the point where you cannot differentiate between fact and fiction. The bottom line is that television shows are a good half-hour or hour escape from daily hassles and can help you to relax, but only if you do not and I repeat DO NOT get real life mixed up with the life of the characters of the show you watch. So remember, watch and have fun but keep it real.

A Charming end to season six

Lorena Rangel Norseman staff Well season six to Charmed aired on at 10 oclock p.m. Sunday night (May 16), and it was full of surprises and twists. Lets start off with a recap. The season began with Leo (Brian Krause) being held captive by the Valkyries, a group of women worriers that steal the spirit of fallen war heroes and such. Eventually the sisters free him and all five, yes five, Chris included, begin looking for the person or demon that trapped Leo there on the first place. Then baby Wyatt is almost cleansed by the Cleaners, magical beings that clean up magical messes in which magic might be Lorena Rangel Norseman staff Congratulations to Jamie-the stripper, and mother who hopes to start a new business and life with the money she won from the show. Finally, after countless hours of being put through though trials and being put into stressful emotionally charged situations, its over for the guests of Mad Mad House, the SciFi reality show. Now Loana, Tim, Bonnie, expose, when he uses his powers to conjure a dragon. Then theres Phobe (Alyssa Milano) with all of her power problems. First, she cannot control them then she misuses and loses them. Her active powers anyway (levitation and premonition). All because she wanted her premonition of her having a baby to come true, but so far no sign of a baby yet. Piper (Holly Marie Combs) also has her share of problems with the news that: one, Chris is her and Loes son from the future and two: that Wyatt is turned evil by some unknown being. Paige (Rose McGowan) had a relatively laid back season execpt for the whole Mr. Right and his Hamin, Kelly, Nichole, Brent, Jamie, Eric and Nole can all go on with their normal lives with the knowledge they have acquired from the Alts. Once again congratulations to Jamie, who will hopefully be able to start her new business and life with the gift that the Alts were convinced that she deserved. So far there has been no talk of an aftermath, reunion-type show but it would be a great idea evil twin Mr. Wrong, thing. Also, her and Richard split rather early in the season. Hopefully Phobes premonition will come true and she will be a teacher. Now the season finale. The audience was in a climactic place because it looked like Gideon (Gildart Jackson) is going to complete his mission without being caught. But good always wins and the sisters were able to save Wyatt and Chris was born, but what is going to happen now that Chris is gone. How will the future turn out now? What is going to happen with Piper and Leo? and will Phobes premonition camoe true? Stay tuned to next season to find out the answers to these questions. to revisit the guests and see if they have really changed because of the experiences they had in the house. Another idea is to have the another ten guests come to the house and be put through similar situations and have the original guests make special apperances and give input on the eliminations and give the new guests advice. Now that would make for an interesting show!

Mad Mad House is over, and the winner is....

Hold that thought...

What makes you human? Some think that to be a very simple question to answer. So do I, but maybe in a different way. So if youre interested, read on. Let me start this off by asking this first. How do you think? Physically, I dont even know how it happens besides the fact that your brain is involved, but the fact is, you do. Constantly. So the better question is where do you think from? Think deep into this one. Where do your thoughts come from? The middle of your head? You have learned to think and feel from the things around you. The things you have assimilated into yourself, like thoughts, ideals, racisms, scents, sounds, and memories. When you put a thought together in the English language your just putting together something that deep down you have put together from everything else around you. You think through your own view from life, but then again life has taught you, maybe even life is speaking through you. If thats the case than every sentient being on earth is the same when it comes to the voices of its mind. But we are different. The statement above still holds true I believe, although I know there is something more. This is where you could touch upon the ideal of souls, whether each and every one of us have one, what the difference between ours and a beavers is, whether other things have them.

But thats a topic for another time. The issue here is what really makes us human. That defining attribute that sets us apart. And I think its is to ask, Why? Curious by nature humans are born to wonder. I know that we are the only ones who truly ask why to find the answers and more importantly the meaning of something. I know this because if anything else could, they would have devised a way to communicate that all consuming question, Why? Or mabye theyre content with what they have. It is this one thought that

comes from more than just our surroundings, imprinted onto us from the day we are born, that has inevitably led to the dominance of our species. Our science, our religions, our wars. These things are us, human. Mankind is the means to an answer, one that is far away, but with each answer comes infinitely more questions. Forever we will be man, just another part of this Earth. But to become something greater than you are. You must begin to understand yourself. That is the brief glimpse I feel like sharing with you. So make with it what you will. But just remember. Youre only human.
