THE PROBLEM
The information and personal technology revolution of the past decade has vast potential for application on the battlefield, in public safety and other areas where mission effectiveness depends on secure communication, information sharing and collaboration. Wearable computing and communication technology can provide crucial real-time awareness, decision support and tactical intelligence in the harshest environments. Up to now, the effectiveness and successful application of wearable computer technology for dismounted applications has been limited by equipment size, weight and reliability. In addition to weight and size limitations, other factors such as battery life, connectivity and expansion potential and cumbersome user interfaces, have not met the demands for useful deployment in the field.

THE SOLUTION
The General Dynamics Itronix GD300 is a small wearable computer that combines rugged computing, GPS and data communication into a device designed to improve situational awareness and communication with tactical and commercial networks. Using a modular, open-system technology, the revolutionary GD300 easily accommodates current and future applications for mission-critical field users such as military, public safety, SWAT and first responders. When designing the GD300, General Dynamics Itronix examined the challenges and problems and built a solution around them. The result is a fully-rugged, lightweight, 8-ounce computer that runs the open-source AndroidTM operating system platform with its extensive software application support. The GD300 delivers information anywhere using ultra-sensitive GPS reception. The device is fully ruggedized for the harshest environments; it can be connected to most military and commercial radios; and, its cost-effective and adaptable to user needs.

The General Dynamics Itronix GD300

Not to be compared with down-sized desktop and notebook computing technology, the GD300 is a user-oriented rugged, wearable computer designed to meet the portability and usability demands of users on-the-move.

BRIGHT, HIGH-RESOLUTION TOUCH SCREEN DISPLAY

The GD300s display is large enough for comfortable viewing and is easily readable anywhereeven bright sunshine (per MIL-STD-3009 and tested for MIL-L-85762A). Its wide-format 800 x 480 pixel resolution exceeds that of most commercial handheld devices, but unlike consumer products, its resistive 4-wire touch screen can even be operated wet or with gloves.

SUPERIOR GPS PERFORMANCE AND QUADRA-HELIX ANTENNA

The GD300s high gain, quadrafilarhelix antenna, combined with fully-integrated technology, provides superior ultra-sensitive GPS required in missioncritical situations such as public safety, military and emergency first response.

ANDROIDTM OPERATING SYSTEM PLATFORM: OPEN SYSTEM, OBSOLESCENCE-PROOF

The GD300 utilizes the latest advances in AndroidTM open system architecture to leverage both military and commercial applications. Many custom software packages are available and a vibrant AndroidTM developer community represents a robust open-source software resource.

SMALL SIZE, LOW WEIGHT

Weighing less than 8 ounces, the GD300 is designed for forearm or chest-mount use via special mounting kits and facilitates proper air circulation in the most extreme conditions.

SEALING: OP. TEMP:

MIL-STD-810G: Shock, vibration, altitude, EMC/ESD

ALL-DAY BATTERY
The GD300s lithium-ion battery offers all-day operation, alleviating the need to carry spares or change batteries on the job.

WHY ANDROID?
The GD300 uses the AndroidTM mobile operating system thats based on a LinuxTM kernel. Initially championed by Google and now administered by the Open Handset Alliance (openhandsetalliance.com), AndroidTM is truly open, easily customized and extended to include emerging technologies while providing excellent performance with minimal hardware. AndroidTM has quickly become the most popular operating platform for commercial smartphones, resulting in a large, dedicated developer community and reduced development time and costs.

Opening A New Era In Field Communication

COTS COMPONENTS: SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE, LOW COST
By using COTS components and strictly adhering to industry standards, the GD300 is easily expandable. The ARM CortexTM A8 OMAP 3530 processor provides excellent processing and graphics performance: 256MB of DDR RAM and 8GB of flash memory provide ample and reliable storage Expandable flash memory via a microSD card slot Robust docking connector to interface with military and commercial radios It has been tested for extreme vehicle and helicopter vibration and can survive multiple drops on all of its surfaces, edges and corners. The GD300 was designed to allow operation in extreme humidity and provide compliance with the IEC 6100-4-2 requirement for electrostatic discharge (ESD) as well as EMI immunity. All testing was conducted in conformance with methods mandated in MIL-STD-810G.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GPS SENSITIVITY

The GD300 provides parallel tracking of 48 channels, 400,000+ correlators, -163 dBm tracking sensitivity, and takes less than a second for hot start first fix times, less than 35 seconds for cold start first fix times, and only a tenth of a second for obscuration recovery. GPS antenna design and quality directly affects GPS overall sensitivity. The quadrifilar helix antenna used in the GD300 employs four wires wound in a helix for an extraordinarily wide beam of over 120 degrees. By comparison, rectangular microstrip patch antennas with good overhead reception only provide 60 degrees, resulting in poor horizon reception. Dipole antennas typically work well at the horizon but not overhead. By using a quadrifilar helix antenna, the GD300 has excellent, simultaneous reception from more satellites both overhead and on the horizon.

CONNECTIVITY UNLEASHED: RADIO INTERFACE KITS

To make connectivity as simple, rugged and reliable as possible, General Dynamics supplies optional Radio Interface Kits (RIKs) with adjustable length quick-disconnect cabling systems that can be customized for use with any radio. The RIK provides modularity and application flexibility, extending the life-span of the GD300 as needs and requirements change. This supports military and civilian data communication networks and Land Mobile Radio Systems (LMRS). If an additional interface is required in the future, it can be easily supplied by an alternate RIK without changing the device or compromising ruggedness.

RUGGED ENOUGH TO GO ANYWHERE

The GD300 can operate and survive under the harshest conditions. It can handle operating temperatures between -30 and 60 degrees C, storage temperatures between -55 and 70 degrees C and it reliably operates in unpressurized altitudes up to 40,000 feet. Sealed to IP54 ingress protection standards, the GD300 is near impervious to dust and pouring rain.

GD300 - A New Era in Rugged, Wearable Computing

The GD300 represents the first of a new generation of lightweight, wearable yet rugged mobile computers capable of providing reliable real-time situational awareness and radio-agnostic communication for military and civilian users alike. customers all benefit from LMR P25 interoperability, legacy support and flexibility. JTRS HMS Rifleman Radio (AN/PRC-154) is an example of a JTRS (Joint Tactical Radio System) networking device that uses the Soldier Radio Waveform (SRW). Rifleman Radio is a secure, body-worn radio that uses JTRS mesh networks to provide connectivity in hard to reach locations at the extreme edge of the battlefield. In addition to voice communication, the AN/PRC-154 can support data transmission and connect to the GD300 via the RIK.
