Domestic Violence Awareness

According to RecordsPedia (2011), crime in Marathon County over the last 10 years has increased by 32% but violent crime has increased by 70%. This means it is likely that domestic violence, which includes physical violence, sexual abuse, financial abuse, verbal abuse, and/or emotional abuse, is likely to have in50/50 Raffle Over the last few years, the Womens Community has been fundraising for the construction of their new facility. The groundbreaking for that facility will be this summer! Rasmussen would like to help them, thus, throughout the month of August, the campus will host a 50/50 raffle. In 50/50 raffles, the winner of the raffle will receive 50% of the cash collected and the other 50% will go to the Womens Community. Raffle tickets may be purchased at the front desk and will cost $2.00 each or $10.00 for six. The winner of the raffle will be drawn at the end of our speaker event on August 31. Although we would love to see you at this event, you do not have to be present to win. References

creased as well. A local agency, The Womens Community, reports that nearly three out of four (74%) Americans know someone who is or has been a victim of domestic violence (What is Abuse?, 2011), so Marathon county is not alone. In order to help our staff and students learn more about domestic violence in our community, Rasmussen College has invited Jane Graham Jennings, Director of the Womens Community, to come speak. Jennings will help us better understand abuse and its impacts, will share with us how her agency works with abuse victims, and will highlight how everyday people can contribute to the effort to eliminate domestic violence. Jennings will be at Rasmussen on August 31, 2011 from 5:30m to 6:30pm and will be speaking in room 101/102. Jennings presentation is free and open to the general public.

Student Advisors
Wausau now has two Student Advisors: Jean Miller and Ben Krueger. For the last year, Jean Miller has been in the role of Student Services Coordinator and Ben Krueger has been in the role of Administrative Assistant. Both will be transitioning to the Student Advisor role over the next few weeks. In their Student Advisor roles, Ben and Jean will be scheduling new students for their classes and advising them the entire way through their programs. If you are a student, Ben and Jean will be there to help you from enrollment to graduation.

The Learning Center Corner

Justice Studies Students! Green Bay Instructor Callie Lacy will again visit the Learning Center to help out our Justice Studies students this quarter. Stop by on Monday, August 22, between 10am and 3pm and get help with your Justice Studies papers. Finally, Justice Studies tutor Bryan Gaulke will also be on hand all day to provide extra help. Call 715-841-8080 for an appointment today. Brainiac Breakfast! Papers for Pancakes! Prepare for finals at this fun ANTI-cram studying event on Monday, August 29th. Plan ahead to bring in your final assignments and papers. A faculty member or tutor will review them. Many instructors will be offering extra credit for this. Its from 9am to 11am in the Student Lounge. Our Academic Dean, Joy Henrich, is cooking! Hot pancakes & the fixings will be served to any student who brings in their papers or assignments for review. See you on August 29th! Midterm Studying Tips Plan a study session in the Learning Center or Library with a tutor or friend. If you prepare and plan early, then you will do much better on your midterms. Study 1-2 hours EVERY day for a mid-term exam. Its much more effective to study for awhile every day, than to cram right before the test. Schedule a session with tutor to be quizzed on course content. Contact your instructors NOW if you do not understand something and ask for help. Take careful notes during every class or online session. Spend 10-15 minutes twice a day reviewing. Try to review your notes with your morning coffee and then as part of your evening routine! Study in short, manageable stints - plan breaks and rewards for yourself. Ask a lot of questions and then ask more. Always remember you can do it! Being selfconfident is critical to being a good, active learner.

Blood Drive! Free Screenings!

Blood Drive! The School of Health Sciences will be hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on August 23rd from 10am to 2pm at the Wausau Campus. There will be a sign up sheet at the front desk, so anyone who is interested in becoming a donor, please reserve your spot early! To reserve your spot, you can also call 715-841-8000. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor, a person like you who makes the choice to donate. There is no substitute for your donation ... When you make a blood donation, you join a very select group. Currently only 3 out of every 100 people in America donate blood. Finally, if you give during this blood drive, you will also have the chance to win a trip for four to Orlando and other great prizes! Free Screenings! Rasmussen Medical Assisting students will be helping with blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), and vision screenings at the Bridge Community Health Clinic from August 9-12, 2011. Credo eReference Books is a collection of over 947,000 articles from 100 reference books. All subject areas are covered. Titles include Collins Dictionary of Business, World of Criminal Justice, Cambridge Encyclopedia of Child Development, Encyclopedia of Computer Science, and The Cambridge Historical Dictionary of Disease. eBooks via EBSCO was formerly known as Netlibrary. It contains almost 20,000 eBooks and a handful of eAudioBooks that Rasmussens librarians have selected to support all of our program areas. This is a phenomenal collection; you can find everything from marketing books to travel guides, to biographies to health sciences books. GALE eReference Books is a collection of 60 some encyclopedias, handbooks, and reference books. It includes titles such as: Business Plans Handbook (17 volumes!), Child Development, Crime and Punishment in America, Encyclopedia of Crime and Justice, Encyclopedia of Global Industries, Encyclopedia of World Cultures, Gale Encyclopedia of Psychology, and the Macmillan Encyclopedia of Death and Dying. Netlibrary once provided our largest collection of eBooks. It was recently purchased by the EBSCO company and has been reborn as eBooks via EBSCO. Overdrive is our newest collection of eBooks. In addition to eBooks that you can read online (or download to your ebook reader), it also includes a great collection of eAudiobooks and eVideos that you can listen to or view online or from an appropriate device (laptop, mp3 player, ipad, etc.). This collection deserves exploring! You will need to download their free software to use the collection, so be prepared for that. Watch for a screencast video in your Rasmussen email that will show you how to navigate this database more easily. Safari Books is a collection of over 4,300 eBooks. Most of the books in this collection are related to computer, information technology, and business. In particular, there are some wonderful guides and how-to books. Topics covered include Java, Adobe, web development, Microsoft products, project management, Windows server administration, network administration, security management, digital media, and more. Technology and Design students should check this out, but the rest of us looking for tips on how to use programs such as Photoshop, Excel, or Access should take note, too! The librarys eBooks used to be in the catalog, but are now searched via eBook collection. The collections can be located, alphabetically by title, in the eResources section of the library webpage. If you have questions, see your librarian or email librarians@rasmussen.edu

Summer Quarter Advice

Taking courses during the summer can be tough if you are craving a vacation or time at the beach. When you are tempted to skip your classes or let your homework go, remember that summer courses mean you will be finishing your degree faster. You will keep gaining academic ground, and you will graduate all the sooner! Advice: Are you planning on a vacation? Make sure to take it during the break between summer and fall quarter (September 17-October 2). Do not plan on taking a vacation during classes! You will get behind and not be able to catch up! Advice: Get all your homework done during the work week or do all of your class work in the morning so you can go to the pool in the afternoon or take the weekend off and enjoy the weather. Advice: Remember why you are taking classes in the first place: to better your life and to fulfill your goals. Enjoy your summer this year as a student! Stay in college and meet your goal of graduation!

Health Sciences Externship: Allie Schultz

What is your Name? My name is Alice Schultz but I would prefer to be called Allie. Where are you doing your externship? I am doing my externship at the Aspirus Weston Walk in Clinic. What do you think of the externship so far? I think my externship has been awesome so far. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. Over the years I have worked as an EMT, a Paramedic and as a CNA. I may have seen a lot of different things and experienced a lot but nothing compares to what I am doing now. In the clinic you have patients ranging in age from infant to 93 years of age and you are dealing with patients who may have anything from strep throat and rashes to those that may come in with life threatening issues. It is very fast paced with some lulls. However, when it is busy, IT IS BUSY Any big surprises? I guess I would have to say that the biggest surprise would be just how comfortable I was after such a short amount of time. Everyone there is very helpful and they all made me feel like I was part of the team and only after one day of working with them. I also found it really interesting to see the amount of people who will come to the walk in clinic rather than go to see their own primary doctors or to the emergency room. Any words of advice for upcoming students? Yes I do have some words of advice for future students including: Do not take anything for granted. Always be eager to jump in and assist someone or ask to observe I would recommend that if possible, you find or purchase a Drug Guide for Nurses that includes a cd; this will help to identify and pronounce the names of drugs and what they look like. This will greatly help you when you have the patients that come in and say well I know I am taking this medication for my blood pressure but I dont know the name, it is a little pink pill that I take every morning. The book would be a very useful tool to identify along with the cd to help in learning how to pronounce the names. My last tip is just to BREATHE, you will make mistakes but they will be very minimal and nothing that you really need to get stressed out about. Making mistakes is part of the learning process and you are there to learn. What are your average work days like, how many hours? The Weston Walk in Clinic is open Monday Friday from 7am until 7 pm and Saturday & Sunday from 8am until 4pm. I am currently working 12 hour shifts from 7am until 7pm, 3 days a week and as of now I have not had to work any weekends but this will change in August. How does the real world differ from the school setting? WOW HELLO It is like night and day/black and white, there is so much more to experience in the real world than what you experience in a school setting. Here you are working directly with the patients and dealing with many different issues as they occur. It is a much faster pace and you have to be on your toes and alert at all times. You also need to be able to jump from one thing that you are doing and assist a doctor who may need something done STAT. This could include anything from a throat culture to a nebulizer treatment to having to perform an irrigation cleaning on a patient. The doctors expect you to get it done without any type of hesitation on your part. They may also require you to run a sample to the lab for testing. Do you feel like you were well prepared for your externship? Yes, absolutely... Guaranteed I was nervous at first but I feel I was well prepared as I recalled all that I was taught in my classes, especially Clinicals and Lab Skills. I feel like these were taught to a T. I enjoyed learning at school but the real life experiences are so much better.
